The whole crew at University bicycles is really easy-going, accommodating, and helpful. They had the right part at the right moment and and took care of me quickly amidst the COVID-19 conditions. The coolest part is that there is no hint of condescending attitudes towards newbies like me... Colby is a champ for not making fun of me for putting my bike together incorrectly. He is also a legend for being so helpful and giving me some solid education. Beware of me on the trails I am absolutely a liability which is why University bicycles so helpfully set a helmet out for curbside pick up. Even though the store was buzzing with activity, the staff still managed to check on me and give me space as I looked around and tried to gather my bearings. I have been to most of the bike shops in Boulder, but you don't need to bother-- University Bicycles is #1. Whether it's customer care or mechanical competence, they are the best in town. Mr. salesman proceeded to lie to my regarding the bikes that Pro Peleton carries, and then promptly shot out lie #2 with regards to the Boulder Sports Medicine folks, and their alliance with UB. Boulder co is huge on biking thus many good bike shops. However my usual two bike shops were closed on a Sunday and I had an emergency (my wheel needed replacing) University was open, and I noticed how busy the shop was. They also had plenty of staff, by far the largest and busiest bike store I've been in. They repaired my bike quickly and efficiently and what really impressed me was they have not ONE technician inspect and test it AFTER it's finished, but TWO separate technicians as a double check. Came into town yesterday to drop our son off at CU Boulder. My first time spending any appreciable amount of time in this GREAT town. Needed to get some training in whilst vacationing, so was looking to rent a REAL road bike. After a less than savory experience at Boulder Bikesmith (see my review). I walked over to UB which is 5 minutes from my hotel. When I walked through the door, there were two employees chatting and when I walked up to them to inquire, they already guessed who I was (as I had called while walking over). They already knew which bike they were going to put me on (a nice carbon Serotta). They had me in and out of there in less than 15 minutes. They made sure I knew where the good rides were and recommended a $1 map (worth getting) that shows you all the bike friendly streets and how to get into the mountains. Very professional operation with REALLY friendly and knowledgeable staff (the guy that helped me -- Matt I think had won collegiate mountain bike nationals for CU Boulder). The nice rental bikes aren't cheap, but in the end worth it. They've won a loyal customer for the next four years of visits to our son and beyond. read more

I really liked this bike shop. I was looking for a hybrid bike and the sales guy was helpful, friendly, informative and patient. Just a nice guy and not at all pushy nor arrogant because I don't know much about bikes. Though the shop was busy (they have a large selection), he really took his time with me. Definitely check this shop out if you're bike shopping! UPDATE: I went in again recently and was passed from one sale guy to another to another. Yes I had to explain THREE times what I was looking for, I got pretty exasperated by the time I got to sales guy #3. Usually in bike shops, when someone comes back from a test ride, they wait until the salesperson they were dealing with is available. I know, I've waited. Not here. They must be paid on commission or something, but when that test ride comes back, they drop you like a hot potato. Very strange and frustrating. So I've downgraded my rating. read more

I am super happy with my slamming jamming custom built cross check and Justin is super awesome. He communicated with me through the whole process of several weeks of building my bike, the fitting was very thorough and following up frequently afterward. They lost me as a potential customer. I went there once to test ride some high end bikes, it was no problem and the sales rep was very cool. They have a ton of bikes there, but I like what I like and already know what brand, model and components I'm looking for so I didn't browse. They didn't have the exact frame I wanted in stock and I want to go more custom than box stock, but because of the pleasant experience I was wanting to spend my money here in the future. So in the meantime I'm bike less cause mine got piranha attacked (parts stolen off it while locked up) So, I wanted to get just a simple no frills cross trail cruiser for just light trail cruising and being able to commute around with it and not stressing out locking up a custom $5k+ all mountain rig. So, a few days later I visited another store more local to me just browsing around and found a model that I was keen on, but wasn't able to test ride that day cause of rain. I wanted to give Ubikes my business though as their first impression was good and I'm looking for a good shop to call my bike home. The next day, I called Ubikes to see if they had the model in stock in my size, although not the color I wanted, they did. It still did not deter me as I wanted to give them my business even if it wasn't the exact color I was looking for, how's that for a great customer! I asked if they would price match and they said they would, I told them I found it just the day before for $10 (big money) cheaper at another store and told them where. He was already very hesitant like I was asking the world but agreed and I said I would be in that day to test ride and buy. A few minutes later he calls back and says, "sorry the other store says they are selling at what we are selling it for so its the same price" I call back and tell the sales manager that is what it was priced at there just yesterday and we even confirmed that it was their regular sales price so whoever he talked to was wrong. He just says, yea go buy it there and we end the conversation...Do I have to fight to spend my money? I think not. For me to shop there, I would be driving an extra 35 miles to give Ubikes the business and am turned away like nothing for over a $10 price match, which is a whopping 1.9% of purchase price to which they would have easily made up profit in selling me a bike rack on the spot and continued future business. Business must be real sweet at Ubikes to be able to turn away a ready and able to buy customer like that. After our convo, I was just stumped honestly. Pretty sure of the things to come if I started doing business with them, glad I found out now. I tend to think cause it's a base model that they just figured no big whoop and probably treat customers with low end models with disdain and the brush off like I experienced. I guess they don't think about future business, just because someone buys a low end model doesn't mean they don't have the means to purchase whatever they got on their showroom floor... Oh and btw, I called the other shop straight after and the price as marked was still $10 cheaper.....He just did not want to either listen to me or didn't even call them. It wasn't about the money, but the principle of the thing and how it was handled. Hear that Ubikes? That's the sound of a lot of Benjamin Franklins flying away. read more

Out with the family from New York 2nd week in April. The staff at UBikes was GREAT! Every single one of them. We had a party of 8 including 4 kids. They took a lot of time to make sure everyone was fitted properly, had the right gear and gave us a map and trail that they thought would be perfect for the kids. (It was!) If you're looking for a rental this is the only place I would go. Cost and service is 5 stars. When we move out you can be sure this will be where we buy our bikes and gear. read more

We bought two bikes from University in the past three months, and every time I go in for anything I love them a little more. The sales people we worked with were fantastic. Not remotely pushy and they were so helpful. I needed to get a couple adjustments made on one of the bikes this week, so I went in and they showed me how to fix it myself in the future, and got it working well again. They also helped assess the condition of one of my old bikes, and made some repairs on it. I live in Denver, so it's not as close as some of the other well-known front-range bike shops, but I like University better than any of them. read more

I just got done with a ride. Unfortunately I got caught in a rain storm. I been a loyal customer. I ask If I could just rinse off my bike from the dirt. The technician said. I'm sorry we can't let you do that. We sell that service if want to rinse your bike. That is Bad customer service. I can see if I needed a full detail of my bike, but if I just needed a quick rinse, they should have been polite and said that's ok given the circumstance. I guess. I will be loyal to other shops who are willing to be provide good customer service to bike owners. read more

The service level at this shop is simply next level. They, like all shops post COVID, are having trouble getting bikes and parts. Yesterday they researched my 10 year old bike to locate the part number for my trashed brake hoods to find the part number, attempted to order for me but found delivery to be in 2022. They then recommended eBay, wrote down the part number. I got online and ordered and will be delivered in a couple weeks. Over and over through the years Ubike amazes me with their service. Five Star's because they earned it. I stopped going to U-Bikes back in the day, early 90s, as I didn't feel like the staff were especially friendly and the service department was slow. I moved away from the Boulder area for 7 years. Upon my return in 2010 I tried all the other shops in town with varying levels of satisfaction. Recently I gave U-Bikes another try and was I pleasantly surprised. Greeted at the door, and treated like they wanted my business. And they have it. They have been dialing in my road bike recently, and every time I walk in the service department snatches me up and takes care of business. They have been fair with the bill when there were mix-ups on both our sides. Dustin and Nick in service - thanks for your patience and great attitudes. Exceptional treatment. Came in with my friend - who is new to biking - after a gawdawful experience at Full Cycle (advice: never shop there), and all the staff were amazing - but especially Logan. There was a worker at the door quick to direct us to relevant experts for our question. A man came and ushered my bike to an in-store rack while we dealt with my friend's. And despite our making no purchases and it being clear that we were going to have to ultimately go to a store that serviced Giant (but, again, definitely not Full Cycle), Logan spent time working with my friend on the trainer and telling her all about her new bike. I bought one of my bikes here and I get service for both bikes here. (One of my bikes came from Two Wheel Tango in Ann Arbor, but that is too far to go for service.) I have bought some of my cycle wear here but in recent years have found that REI better fits my needs in that category. I really do like this store but to deliver a bike for service by car is quite a nuisance. It's not only the parking but that they don't open early enough for me to beat the tourist crowd down to Pearl. I have always been pleased with the bike service and the customer service. read more

I bought a used bike here a few years ago and had a perfectly acceptable experience. They helped me find a bike to my specifications, checked the bike before sending it out the door with me, adjusted the seat for me, and they gave me my one free maintenance checkup six months later without a hitch. Everyone was nice and helpful and friendly and I thought I'd have no problem going back when, almost two years later, my bike started having a problem. It started dragging, lost its momentum, and became difficult to pedal even going downhill. Riding to work, an all-downhill path, became a true workout, with me huffing and puffing by the end. I thought it might be my brake pads dragging, or a gummy chain, but beyond that I didn't have any idea because I am not mechanically inclined and barely know how to fill up my tires with air, let alone diagnose problems. So I took it into University Bicycles, where a friendly enough mechanic put it up on the rack, spun the wheels a few times, activated the brakes in a few different gears, and said brightly, 'Seems fine to me!" I asked him if he was sure, because there was most definitely a problem, to which he replied that there wasn't a problem that he could see, and sent me out the door. The implication there was that the problem must be in my head. Helpful! Well, my bike's dragging worse than ever, it's starting to be impossible to ride if there's any hint of an uphill slope, and if I go back to University Bikes at all, it'll just be to say 'I told you so'. read more

UBikes is a great Boulder institution. The salesfolk are always friendly. The store is large and fun and has lots to look at. The service department is top notch. If you are not a cycling expert and are in the market for a bike or accessories, this place will take care of you. The only downside is that they are a little pricier and have less inventory than Excel. read more

Took my mountain bike in for service on my front derailleur and also rear shock.....expected to leave it for a few weeks. Mechanic that helped me did an assessment and was able to fix both very quickly.....I asked how much and he said it was on them!! I've been here before for other service and it was excellent....the practice of not charging when it's a quick fix is fantastic and a great way to gain serious loyalty. Kudos to the management for allowing this to happen. read more

Last week we passed through Boulder CO and rented bikes. Me and my buddy were very excited to the shred the gnar. We each payed 100$ to get their highest quality demo downhill bikes. About 4 hours after renting the bikes I finally taped on the front brakes and they did not work. I then looked down and realized that I had no brake pad. UNIVERSAL BIKES screwed me. When I brought the bike back the next day the bald headed manager had quiet the attitude with me because they charged my mothers card 270$ for a break pad being missing and the Derailleur for having a few scratches. I give this place 1 star because the bike was not the good, horrible service, and the owner does not know how to run a business... Be aware to check all parts of rental bikes, all of the bikes are beat up due to how previous costumers treat them. FULL CYCLE is located on Pearl St.. they have better cheaper bikes and good service with a restaurant! read more

Absolutely love this place! Although I know how to ride a bike I am very new to it and didn't know what I was looking for. They asked me a ton of questions, fit me for a bike, let me test ride a few outside in the alley and answered all of my questions. I was hesitant to get on the bike and was nervous but they made me feel so comfortable and excited about getting back on the bike! They had to order me the bike and when I went to pick it up they let me know they do life-time break adjustments on the bike, can bring it in for anything I need and that the frame has a life-time warranty. They also helped me remove the front tire and fit the bike in my car. My one suggestion is that the employees where a shirt, hat or something to show they work there. When I walked in I had no idea who to approach for help because everyone looked the same! read more

My girlfriend, myself, and our dog roamed in here to browse the selection, and honestly I don't know if we've ever been treated so warmly at any other business, bike related or not. Everyone here is great. The store is wonderfully inclusive and bonus points for how they loved our pup. Beth, the GM, is just an absolute ray of sunshine and our experience talking to her and just being in the store was the highlight of our day.
