I rented an aluminum road bike from Unlimited Biking, and it was a miserable experience that left me stranded with a broken bike in the middle of nowhere. The bike was poorly maintained and generally unpleasant to ride. But things got much worse then the cheap plastic pedal fell off half way through my ride. I couldn't screw it back on as the screw threads were completely stripped. I was able to get to a nearby bike shop, and they confirmed the bike couldn't be easily repaired and would need an entirely new crank arm. I called Unlimited Bikes, and they offered to bring me a new bike. According to the agent, they had a truck in the area, and it would take them about 30 minutes to get to me to deliver another bike. After 40 minutes I called back to get an update. The truck was about 45 minutes away. What blackhole time warp caused the truck to get 15 minutes farther over 40 minutes is a mystery. I waited another 30 minutes and called to check on the status. The truck was still 45 minutes away. At this point, I got frustrated. They said they could expedite a bike over, but there was traffic and it would take 30 minutes. I waited another 15 minutes and called to check in again. There was no truck available and no spare bikes. WTF. They suggested I get an UberXL and take an hour ride back into Manhattan. They refused to cover that cost. Needless to say, very unhappy that they wasted my entire afternoon and left me stranded. And get this - they refused to refund the cost of the bike rental!!! After fighting aggressively over the course of a week (and contesting the charge on my credit card), I finally got a refund. But wow. I highly recommend avoiding Unlimited Biking at all costs. It's not just about getting a bad bike, you could find yourself dangerously stranded or worse, injured on your ride. read more

Smooth and easy bike pick up & drop off @ Bike MS NYC event. Got bike set up for me and swapped in my pedals no issue. Pedaled around to get the feel of the bike and any last minute adjustments. Problem right before the start with a front flat tire. Quickly returned to the mechanic who made the flat repair in record time. bike rode fine during the event. My only concern was that it would have been nice to put an extra tube, tools & CO2 cartridge in their bike bag but I understand when you have over 250 bikes to rent it could be an issue. Quick and easy check in. We were a walk in and luckily it wasn't too busy. We rented a tandem bike for 2 hours and enjoyed it for about an hour due to the rain. However we got a lot of fun videos and pictures throughout Central Park in the rain. Only thing about the park, it's difficult to find spots to lock up your bike. HORRIBLE experience trying to rent two e-bikes in NYC. After speaking directly to the local store, I made a reservation on their website, paid in full, and received a confirmation # and email from Unlimited. Less than two weeks later, and only 3-4 days before my reservation, I received a text and call stating that my reservation would be CANCELED unless I paid 3x (!!) what I had already paid. Local management had decided to reallocate bikes and close locations for a local cycling event -- which happens every year and had been scheduled for MONTHS in advance. I've almost never seen ANY business deal with NO INTEGRITY like this -- canceling my CONFIRMED reservation while trying to extort an additional $3-400 from me. Shameless! read more

The reservation codes would not work for bike attractions, and even after calling customer service, they still could not resolve the issue. I spoke with Elle in customer service, and they were unable to book anything for us either. We wasted a significant amount of time trying to make reservations during our trip planning. I called the store to get pricing and mentioned we have 2 adults and 2 kids in our group. The female rep on the phone informed me that the price would be $20 for 2 hours per person (adults and kids) for a total of $80. We arrived at the shop and after waiting 10 min in the check-in line, the girl behind the counter charged me $25 for each adult. While that's not a significant price change, it's dishonest and felt scammy. I would normally walk out but we didn't want to spend more time searching for and going to another place. I hope this is NOT Unlimited Biking management's business plan. The second issue is we noticed one of the bikes had low pressure front tire. By this time we had ridden 15 minutes into Central Park and didn't want to turn back and lose another half hour. read more

Not the best experience, but it's okay. I was traveling somewhere on a train and decided to rent a bike. They held onto my only ID, which left me in shock at being without it all day. After googling, I found it's not even legal for anyone to take an ID as a deposit. After the initial shock, they gave me a bike without a bell. I asked where the bell was, and the answer was a polite smile. So I asked for a different bike. The second bike squeaked when I pulled the brake. The answer was that it's normal for the brake to squeak. So I asked for a third bike. That one was good enough, finally. This overall experience put a negative vibe on my entire day. If you need a tag-a-long for your child to ride with you, you better be tall and have a good back. I am 5'3" tall and the only bike they had that would pull the tag-a-long was a men's mountain bike. Even with the smallest bike that my feet could reach the ground on when off the seat, the bar was right up my butt. But the seat was so low that when riding it it was actually too small to be comfortable. They were very frustrated when I complained that I couldn't get on the first bike they provided at all and insisted that this second one was the only option if I wanted my kid to be able to come with me. Bonus points, the bike seat was under the metal thing that attaches the tagalong to the bike so when we went over bumps it pinched my butt between the two. The seat was also rock hard and my but hurt for days afterwards. Apparently this company thinks that only men will be on bike tours with their children. Their website shows comfort hybrid bikes for woman but apparently those are only for woman who don't need a tagalong even though their website clearly gives the option to add a tagalong to these types of bikes! I ended the bike tour with a tweaked back from being bent in half on a too big yet somehow too small men's mountain bike for 3 hours. The only reason for the 2 stars is that they tour guide was awesome. He had a lot of knowledge of the city and I really enjoyed being able to see all the things on the tour. Absolute scumbag business. I went in to see if I could get some air for my tires which they obliged but they way overfilled and completely destroyed both my tubes. I talk to someone to see if they can rectify the situation because my bike is unrideable and now I'm on the hook for repairs. This person was so incredibly rude, they actually acted as if it were MY fault for the damage they caused. No, you should be accepting responsibility! They said, oh why didn't you just do it yourself it's your fault for not doing it yourself! Okay, so you want me to walk into your store and use a dangerous air compressor without any approval? Great logic. Eventually the guy offers to pay while verbally assaulting me and hurrying me out the store, but the money didn't even cover half the repair, leaving me on the hook. If you are looking for a bike rental in the area, do yourself a favor and go elsewhere. Most people who work at bike shops are super friendly and helpful (hence why I thought I could just stop in for some air), but these people are the most rude and vile individuals who could care less about you. read more

I have rented bikes before to see Central Park, so we were very much looking forward to our Self-guided Central Park Picnic with Full Day Bike Rental. We were given this as a gift which was purchased to Virgin Experiences. We booked 2 days ahead of time, but four days before our tour I contacted Unlimited Biking via email through Virgin Experiences. My emails were answered promptly, but did not always completely answer my question. When I inquired about the ingredients in the Mediterranean Sandwich, they responded with a much larger selection of lunch options than was shown on the website. We ordered a lunch for each of us: I ordered the Signature Box while my husband ordered The Italian Box and requested the hot peppers on the side. We arrived at Unlimited Biking on W56th St, NYNY at about 10:00 in the morning. and gave our information. It took over 30 minutes to complete our check in because they 'thought we were coming tomorrow'. My confirmation clearly stated the current date. The problem was that no one had ordered out lunches. The customer service person could not contact the business that prepares the lunches by phone; they had to communicate via text message. I was told the lunches wouldn't be ready until 12:00 - over an hour later. I was asked if I wanted to bike for a while and come back later for our lunches. I did not want to bike for half and hour, then retrace my route to get my lunches and then start all over again. They said the lunches would be ready by 11:30 now. My husband and I got our helmets and bike chain lock and went to get our bikes. The bikes had a very small pouch (about 6" long, 2" across and 2" high). This pouch was big enough to hold the chain lock and nothing else. I asked for a bike with a basket and was told the basket bikes were all gone. Since I had packed extra drinks for our all-day bike ride, There was no place to put my drink bag. My husband and I had to figure out how to attach my bag to the handlebars so that it wouldn't hit the tire or fall to one side. We weren't able to accomplish that. By now it was 11:15 so my husband biked to the entrance of Central Park and I went back to Unlimited Biking to wait for our lunches. I told them that I was about 15 minutes early, but that I would wait for our lunches. I was reminded that the lunches were not going to be ready until 12:00 (which was different than the last time I was given of 11:30). The customer service person said she would go herself to get our lunches. I offered to pick them up myself, but was told that wasn't allowed. Finally, at 11:30 I got our lunches. The lunches came in a box that was about 10" wide, 10" long and 4-5" deeps. There was no way these two boxes would fit in my basket - one box barely fit. Other renters were returning and some had bikes with baskets, so I was able to switch bikes. I have no idea what I would have done if I hadn't been able to get a basket bike! My husband and I unpacked the lunches to condense space - only to find out my husband didn't get the lunch he ordered. No way we were going back, so we kept the lunch. The basket of my bike was overflowing with the lunches and my drinks. (The lunches didn't come with drinks, by the way). Finally, it was time to start our "self-guided" tour. In actuality, this wasn't a self-guided tour because we were only given a map of Central Park with landmarks numbered. No other information given, no suggested route, no approximate distance between landmarks. We persevered partially by using my sense of direction, my husband's map reading skills, the Bloomberg Connects app and a paid audio tour app. Obviously, we were not at all happy with Unlimited Biking. For a shop that had a lot of people renting bikes each day, they were woefully unprepared for us. read more

We rented e-bikes in DC last weekend and were excited to find last-minute availability. We opted for the 4-hour rental period, which came to about $70 per bike with insurance. The location by the wharf was convenient, but the bikes were worn out. They needed some adjustments and general maintenance. I understand rental bikes get used often, but a little upkeep would have been appreciated. The check-in process was smooth. However, after checking in, we were directed to another door where a staff member pointed down an alley and said, "Your bike is down there." I found this odd since the other two bikes we rented were beside us. After that, the staff handed us the bikes and went back inside without giving instructions on using the bikes, offering helmets, or providing information about battery life. My bike's battery was about 80% charged, while my friend's bike showed 100% until it suddenly died about 3 miles from the shop. The same happened to my bike. We ran out of battery before returning, and none of the battery displays were accurate. For a 4- or 6-hour rental, renters must be informed about the battery range or provided with a spare battery. Additionally, the chain on my bike kept skipping under pressure. I'm not trying to criticize the business harshly, but the lack of a safety briefing or supply of safety gear made the experience less smooth. Since many customers are likely visitors unfamiliar with the city, a brief safety and bike use overview would have been very helpful. We were the only customers then, so they weren't particularly busy. Despite these issues, I would rent here again, giving them four stars. Next time, I'd ask more questions and request an extra battery. I would also recommend this place to others but suggest doing the same. read more

( Family) We rented 4 bikes for 1 hour from Unlimited Biking in New York Central Park. When we checked in (9h26), we received a 10-11am rental ticket. This being the only time visible on the ticket, we are convinced that this is the rental time. But when we returned at 10.51am, the employee told us that we had exceeded the hour (+\-20min) with a $55 penalty (for an activity that cost $27). Indeed, at no time were we told that scanning the QR code on the bike was the start of the rental. The only reference in our possession was the ticket and the indication 10am to 11am. And we returned the bikes before 11am. I contacted customer service via Facebook. They respond quickly. I am not disputing the time spent with the bikes but the lack of information which led to exceeding the rental time and an additional $55 which I would have liked to avoid. Summary: Quality of 4* bikes, because they are light and of good quality FB customer service: 3* because responded but cannot grant the request to cancel additional courses due to the lack of information given during check-in. Bike shop was 45 min late opening up on Sunday am.. staff that came wasn't so apologetic about the tartiness. We were in San Francisco for 1 day only and the rain forecast was predicted to come in early afternoon so gave us a limited window to bike the city. Bummer we lost an hour of sightseeing.. E bike rent was very worth the extra $'s. Pedal assisted help going up Lombard, coit tower and cruising the hills of SF. Crossing the Golden Gate Bridge was beautiful!! Biking back from Sausalito was helpful with the E Bike due to a long steep hill.. Rain came around 1:00 made it a little wet but manageable.. great ride seeing the city. He gives you little breaks along to way so you can look around or use a bathroom. I've lived in NY all my life and I learned many new things about NYC on this tour. I highly recommend Unlimited Biking and make sure you get Daniel F as your guide. he makes sure you are safe and let's you know what to expect along the ride. My friend and I are doing the women's triathlon in philly this weekend and we were made aware that Delmo sports was working with unlimited biking to rent a bike so we wouldn't have to travel with our personal bikes from NYC to philly for the triathlon; so i contacted unlimited biking via email to inquire if I could go to the store in person to see the bikes in person and try them out since i want to make sure i am comfortable the day of the event and i was informed by "lance" via email that this was totally doable. So today my friend and i went to the central park 56 west location to see the bikes and try to test them out as i was told via email. To my surprise I was informed that we could not test out the bikes and that I actually had to call a telephone number provided at the store to reserve the bike. Then after a few mins we were informed we could get on the bikes at the store just to see how we feel on the bike, which we were fine with then out of nowhere an employee of unlimited biking names "Kevin" began yelling in front of various customers directly to my friend and I that our triathlon did not matter, that we were wasting our time, and that we are holding up the line and wasting their time and that our triathlon was a month away and why are we even there trying out bikes! He kept yelling and complaining and when i asked for his name he indicated he didnt have to tell us anything and when we asked his coworker "chris" to give us his name he said "hey if he does not want to give his name I aint sharing it" and then the receptionist told us his name and she said his name was "kevin" Asian with a few tattoos, photos will be provided. This was incredibly insulting behavior, borderline assaulting and harassment. As a Latina woman i find this incredibly unprofessional, disrespectful , and disgusting, this company needs to take action on these employees, specifically "kevin and chris," and make sure professional and respectful employees are being hired and delmo sports should not continue to work with these folks until they can show they are actually respectful towards women athletes and women in general. read more

We waited in a 20 minute line only to get turned away because I forgot my license, my bad. They told us the line will be shorter when we return and we can go to the front of the line. We went back to the hotel to get my license and returned to the rental place. When we got there, the line was twice as long and they did not allow us to go to the front so we had to wait all over again. We finally got through the long line, got our bikes and walked to Central Park. When we got there, my daughter couldn't pedal as the chain was detached from her bike. So we went back and returned the bikes and didn't get to ride them after all. It was a very long wait and we were very disappointed for receiving a bike that was not operable. I rented a bike from unlimited Biking for the 5 boroughs tour. The bike I was given had problems with shifting. Every time I hit a bump in on the road the gears would drop. At one point the chain completely fell off! I did stop and attempted to explain the issue to the bike mechanic at the 1st rest area, he looked at the gears spun them around and said they were fine. I had to explain a couple of times it didn't happen on smooth pavement but on bumpy roads, he looked at me like I was a crazy lady. On a hot, humid day my wife and I took a Central Park bike tour with Unlimited Biking. Carla was our guide. We had made our reservations online and opted to rent e-bikes for our tour. My wife is thinking about getting one and we thought this would be a good chance to road test one. For me, I sweat like crazy in the humidity and since we were doing the first tour of the day I didn't want to run back to the hotel to shower again. Check-in was smooth (their shop on 56th Street) and we got our bikes and helmets. All the equipment appeared in good shape. From the rental site, it was a 3 block walk to the park entrance. On the return trip, we rode those blocks since Carla had the chance to evaluate our abilities by then. Carla did an outstanding job leading our group. She was the perfect blend of knowledge, humor, and concern for overseeing the safety of our group. We traveled in a counterclockwise direction from Literary Walk to the Bethesda Fountain, Cleopatra's Needle, the Imagine mosaic, and more. We were given time to explore some of the sites off the bike while Carla watched the bikes. The route was designed to minimize uphill climbs but they can't be totally avoided. If you have concerns about your ability to ride a bike for two hours then I would suggest upgrading your rental to an e-bike. After only riding one for 5 minutes, I "got it" as to why they are becoming so popular, especially with older riders or those with physical limitations. My wife and I have already decided that on our next trip to NYC we would do standard rental and do a self-guided tour since Carla helped give us a sound foundation on getting around in the park.
