I have been a patient of UNM Hospital, and their various clinics since 2019, when my medical care coordinator with BCBS/NM began transferring my services over. From the beginning, there were red flags, but I wasn't in a place that I could necessarily do a lot about it. Again I had a medical care coordinator who kinda' was doing their job, and was working on getting my services "under one roof" so that I had a chance at a diagnosis... I was dealing with a list of symptoms, sudden onset of vision change, Chorioretinitis, uveitis, a personality change, treatment resistant depression, rapid onset of systemic pain, severe joint pain, sudden fatigue and weakness - when I was an elite athlete 12 years ago - continuing decline in my lung health unrelated to my being a former smoker, systemic muscle spasms, granulomas in my lungs and liver (although they didn't find those liver granulomas until 2024, and still won't acknowledge them,) spikes in bilirubin, night sweats, insomnia, random fevers, cold intolerance, nodules in my lungs (again, they never followed up on either the granulomas or nodules.) I came to UNM with a few issues. Seeking a solution/cause instead of an excuse and drugs. I didn't get the handful of drugs because I charted the drugs they give people (benzos, opioids, and similar) as allergies. They stopped giving me excuses when I questioned and challenged them with current research. They also didn't give me a solution. I've now got pulmonary fibrosis and bronchiectasis. Pulmonary didn't want to chart the PF, and has still refused to chart the bronchiectasis. As far as what caused it all... well I now know, but that doesn't change the fact that I'm now dying, when I could have been treated for years before it progressed to this point. A read of my chart, one single medical professional taking the time to actually read my chart, symptoms, review blood work (contemporary and historic,) and cross with my images would have said: this is such a textbook case is sarcoidosis that we can actually validate the textbook with it. But, no one actually cared to do their job that much. The pictures: UNM was breached, multiple times. They haven't publicly owned multiple breaches, and failed to report them under HIPAA's breach reporting. I am/was a cybersecurity engineer. In order to access their network, you need a few things: access to the IP address schemes, the MAC address associated with an IP address, and access to a computer to pull either login token or login keys from. That can be done in under 1 minute with a rubber ducky. I was left alone with the terminal pictured for over 1/2 an hour. And I was carrying a laptop. Going to UNM is like getting a consult by Dr Josef Mengele, a second opinion from RFK Jr., and then treated by Dr Kevorkian... the difference is UNM kills you more cruelty, with less medical knowledge, and much more slowly, than the 3 mentioned. read more

I went to urgent care first at the suggestion of unmh's heart station in response to pain and head injury due passing out from low blood pressure. I also advised them of the residual headaches and vision issues from at least 2 concussions. They had me transferred to the ER by wheelchair with directions and requesting a CT scan for my head and X-rays of my ribs. They told me that they messaged the ER to expect me and respond to a disabled senior. I knew it was going to be bad when the woman behind window 4 began to abuse my transport person and refused to accept my "stickers" and told her to get in back of the line. 11 hours later...and promises to fix and redo missed and correct sloppy hand-offs across 3 ER shifts I continued to ask to speak to someone in charge which never happened. I was allowed to go into low blood sugar and promised 8 hour overdue heart meds (critical) - twice and by the same nurse and approved by a second year resident. Then a bully like line backer sized came into the exam where I was just seen by this resident who promised to look at my X-rays that had to be redone and see why I never got the CT scans, yelled and only got louder that I needed to go back to the waiting room and wait until they could find a doctor to see me. As I tried explain the doctor and nurse where just in and promised to return quickly with my overdue heart meds and to discuss and advise next steps, he only became louder and I do not exaggerate, imposed size and blocking me to force me out. When I saw the nurse leaning back against a counter top next to an ice dispenser, I asked her what is going on and her smile along with the 2 other staff that she was visiting went to a look of surprise while she lowered her head, their bouncer like tech screamed "I said GO". All of the staff and patients heard and saw this and not one stepped in to descalate and protect me. I was terrified and don't even know how I got home. It was at 1 In the morning. I had been up for 24 hours, in pain and disoriented. Although my providers who I am satisfied with their care of me, I truly am in fear of this bully and was shocked how across all 3 shifts of staff, they openly complained about their work. They were clearly disgruntled and there was no one in charge to call them out for their behavior. As I was smugly told that I needed to "self advocate for myself" , I realized that I couldn't even defend myself. I saw the other reviews about the staff and conclude be afraid is justified as no one from the top is accessible or responsive. So all should know the unhappy staff is detrimental to health. Needless to say the actual guards were watching the world cup on their phones and had one earbud in on ear. Unmh, look at the security footage. Respond to a patient and FIX this multi year continued resulting crisis going to Rio Rancho if you want quality care should be cause for termination! read more

Excellent Care at a Busy Hospital I had surgery here about seven weeks ago, and I was really impressed with my experience. Despite being on the "rough" side of town, the hospital itself is excellent. My surgeon and care team were incredibly attentive, explained everything about my procedure and recovery, and provided clear contact info for any questions about medications or post-op care. Parking is easy thanks to their new garage, which even has lights showing available spaces, and shuttles to the hospital are very convenient -- especially if you're recovering from surgery or have mobility challenges. The hospital has a new critical care tower, and check-in is organized and smooth with kiosks and helpful staff directing you to the right floor or wing. The facility is clean, and while security could be slightly stronger given the location, I never felt unsafe. Keep in mind this is a teaching hospital, so you may interact with student physicians or providers -- personally, I thought this was fine, but some people may be uncomfortable with it. Overall, based on my experience, I would highly recommend this hospital for care. The staff, organization, and attention to patients were all excellent. read more

As an admitted patient with a bacterial infection I SAT in er for 60 hours unable to lay down or leave.My hearing declined rapidly though my infection was not in my ears but no nurse or tech would tell a doctor and I became totally, permanently deaf while at UNM HOSPITAL but they acted like it was nothing unusual, no big deal.In addition I lost consciousness and hallucinated about the 60th hour in er, for several hours. read more

Medically, I have had excellent experiences here. However, on the bureaucratic side of things it is a nightmare. From scheduling to check in and anything related, it is difficult and slow, with long wait times for initial appointments and hard to even reach them by phone. read more

Last night in ED with husband having seizures - after THREE hours of no care (5 minutes w/triage nurse) we left. Staff did not follow seizure protocol because no beds available; pharmacy orders ??? Then discovered nurse signed responsibilities/risks paperwork which also stated had been discussed with my husband - NEVER HAPPENED!!! And we were both coherent enough to understand anything they told us! HORRIBLE ED!!! Dangerous place! Would give zero stars if possible! read more

Why do hospitals have to advertise? It doesn't make any difference if they are for profit or non-profit. They all still have high salaries and overhead to pay, and let's not get started on the reasons for the malpractice insurance. For profits are responsible to their share holders, while non-profits have their grantor or funders to please. You and I, their customers, well, we come in a distant second. UNM hospital used to have an F rating until recently. However none of that is reflected in their corporate propaganda and advertising. Currently they have a series of billboards all over town with pictures of men and women wearing white coats and stethoscopes around their necks and a far away look in their eyes. The billboards say, "We practice what we teach". Shouldn't it also say what their rating is? Is this what they are teaching? read more

I worked there as a traveler for case management in 2025. Travelers train each other and mgmt is poor as they dump assignments on you, half comp, if you're lucky. They are back stabbing and lie right to your face! The main hospital is dirty, most times! Security non existing in eve as homeless and drug crowd walk right into the hospital as most times the doors are not secured. Don't work here!! Dirty, dangerous and toxic! Most of the care my son has received at UNM over the years has been excellent. This review is ONLY about the new centralized check-in process. It's terrible. We arrived early for my son's appointment. The lady at the door yelled at us, would not give information as to whether we were in the right place, handed us a ticket that said "adult check-in" even though my son is pediatric, and yelled at us more when we tried to ask if that was correct. We waited half an hour to be called to a desk to sign paperwork. We were late for the appointment because of the wait. Furthermore, there was NO water or bathroom access in the waiting area. UNMH wasn't like this before. You used to just walk to the area of the hospital where your appointment was and check in there, and there were restrooms available in the waiting areas. I'm genuinely appalled. You are serving people with disabilities, people with chronic pain, children, pregnant women... Do better, UNMH. read more

This place sucks! My husband was taken to the ER by ambulance for what appeared to be a stroke. They didn't do any tests for his brain. Now I'm trying to schedule him for various tests and either can't get thru or am told we have to wait 2 weeks for them to review his records before we can get an appointment. Very disappointing. So much beurocrasy that patients don't get any care. Go to Presbyterian instead. read more

Went for my wife and the staff was very friendly, however we sat for 2.5 hours in the waiting room just to hear if we need to run any more tests. When I finally asked what was taking so long, I was told that everything is done but that they'll put in a note for someone to get the IV out see if there's any other tests. Dr. Roth and UNMH CEO Kate Becker were quick to suggest that they needed to hold the line on salaries for the folks on the front line, but they seemed to have a different set of criteria when it came to deciding how much money is available for their colleagues higher in the UNM food chain. For example, during collective bargaining negotiations when Roth, Becker and the Board of Regents fought an effort to provide hospital employees a 7.2% raise, Becker received a $65,000 'performance' bonus from Roth, and soon after the negotiations were completed with the rank and file employees (holding a large number of the support staff to a 3.5% raise, and all others between 3.5% and 5%), Roth approved another $65,000 boost to Becker. Those two 'performance' bonuses totaled $130,000 for her first year - that is in addition to her base salary of $620,000/year. Oh, and that base was also boosted another $12,000 to $632,000, because she is entitled to get the percentage that all the rank and file employees get. Also getting a big raise was Ryan Randall, Director of labor negotiations for UNMH - he received a 15% raise, totaling about $21,500. Likely Randall's bosses, Roth and Becker, were pleased with him keeping those 1,270 employees under $15/hour. read more

This hospital ER was overwhelmed when I brought my g/f there last week early in the morning for emergency stomach surgery and only got worse as the day progressed. The staff and doctor that eventually came out were nice but it took several hours for them to get around to speaking to us. The waiting room wasn't the cleanest and the hospital constantly has to contend with homeless people coming in looking for a fix. Many other patients needed care right away and that was not happening. Since nothing was happening I departed early only to find droves of people coming into the hospital. The noxious fumes from the mini carts bringing people in was enough to make you sick. Getting back to the car was a game of Frogger trying to reach the upper level since cars were a constantly streaming into the parking garage. The construction is still going on and I hope for the sake of patients and staff this gets done soon. So the outcome was that my g/f did not get to see a surgeon and she has to go somewhere else since they said it would take 6 more months to get a consult for surgery. She cannot wait that long. read more

Rude nurses and techs. They all seem miserable and they take it out on the patients. Emergency Psych ER and UNM PES are the worst. I was having some mental health issues and they traumatized me worse. Also they did not do 15 minute checks and the guy next to me had a seizure and I got up and put him on his side and put a blanket under his head. Went to the door screaming for help and initially they did not believe me. One nurse said, "not now Samuel!" Finally they came and took him. A doctor spoke to him a couple hours before and told him he had been off seizure meds over three years and it was concerning. The nurses never gave him the meds and he had a seizure. Also they violated HIPAA for having 4 people on medical chairs in a tiny room. The smell from the homeless guy was horrible. I told the nurse, "Get used to it because he is not moving!" I even fell at PES and the nurse hovered over me screaming, "You know what you are doing!" Stay away at all cost. At UNM PES, I went to use the bathroom and blood was smeared on the toilet seat. I told the tech about the blood and she shrugged her shoulders. I was moved from the waiting room because i asked for a bed to rest. They took me to the back to another waiting room. The tech said, "Well you asked to come to the back!" I slept on the cold floor. They are used to abusing low functioning mental health patients because they do not know how to advocate for themselves. You also have to pound on a window to beg for food and they take forever to get it. They do not care if you shower. They literally will neglect you if you do not bug them. read more

Took my wife there for emergency treatment for lungs problem. We were there over 6 hours and got no final diagnosis. She did get some tests done but we were stuck in the ER waiting room waiting for a final diagnosis. My wife was uncomfortable and feeling worse. We chose to leave and take our chances at our own home. If my wife gets worse at home we will go to another ER. The ER was very busy for a thursday afternoon. Patients were being treated in the hallways. Half of the patients looked like they should have been in urgent care and not emergency. read more

My brother was taken to UNM hospital by ambulance on December 13, 2025 from assisted living facitily, Moranda, around 3:13 pm. I called the emergency room to try to speak with someone about his care, at 3:50 pm, because his records are with Presbyterian Hospital. A nurse called me back at 6:41 PM to let me know his heart had stopped. I was on my way to the hospital when I got another call from the nurse at 6:52 pm that stated that they were unable to revive him. I asked the nurse if I could see him now, I was 5 minutes away. She stated to come into the emergency room and tell them you want to see your brother, that he just passed and that I wanted to be with him. She told me to tell them at the front desk that he was in the resuscitation room and they would bring me back. Well this is where it started the worst staff at the check in desk. I explained to the women what the nurse told me to tell them and that I was to be taken to my brother that just passed away. She stated she would have to check. She did not use her computer to locate him but went away to find out some information. She returned to the desk and I went up to ask her what had happened. She just saw me 5 minutes ago and could not recall what I needed. I explained it again and stated I wanted desperately wanted to see my brother. About 10 minutes went by and a different women was there and I asked her about my brother and she stated the other lady left, for the day and that she just came in. She stated no one had told her what was going on. So once again I explained that I needed and wanted to see my brother and I was told I could go back immediately when I arrived. It has already been over a half hour. She also got up and left and than returned and stated she could not locate my brother. I told her to check her computer and see were he was. I was was very upset with the lack of caring from the front desk personal. They had time to check there phones and talk with other staff but were not actively trying to help me. Finally a socoial worker asked me if I needed help and I explained to her what was going on. The social worker was very kind, understanding, and took me and my husband back to a room to sit while she personally checked out what was going on. The front desk staff was unwilling to do there job. I felt like I was an inconvenience and that I was bothering them. That is there job. They were the most uncaring, lazy, and rude people I have ever dealt with. No customer service at all. It was a very upsetting experiance made much worst by the incompetent staff. I guess when it was time for the first women to end her shift she just left me hanging. She did not report to her replacemnt what was going on. The second women did not do much either. It was when the social worker noticed I was upset in the waiting room that she helped me. I have never been disrespected and igorned in this way. UNEXCUSABLE. I WOULD NEVER TREAT SOMEONE LIKE THAT. read more

The New UNM check in process is ridiculous and actually very hard. As a mother with a special needs child, to have a sensory stimulated child have to sit for 45 minutes just to check in is barbaric for him. It has gotten where I hate having g to go to an appointment. First parking, then catch a shuttle, then sit for over 65 people to be called before you, by the time my son sees his dr or specialist it's almost impossible to exam him as he now is just on sensory overload. UNM m, if you really care about patients, you can just let them check in their designated appointment specialty. This is beyond frustrating. Admittedly this is not the place I like to be. I have a bad stubborn habit of avoiding going to the emergency room unless absolutely necessary. Nothing frightens me more than the thought of being connected to tubes and machines. Unfortunately this time around I knew there was something wrong and that if I didn't go it could possibly be life threatening. I can thank the internet for the scare. Best way to put it is its better to be safe than sorry. The medical staff took great care of me from start to finish. After I checked myself in they evaluated me and shortly after sending me to the waiting room, they took some bloodwork. My only complaint of the experience I have is the long wait between the nurses and finally seeing a doctor to explain what they determined to be the cause of my condition. I came in at about 2:30 in the afternoon and I didn't get discharged until 8 in the evening. They walked me through what exactly was wrong with me. Gave me some meds to help treat it for a few days in hopes of the symptoms to subside. Luckily it's non life threatening but definitely concerning. The staff was very professional and even went above and beyond to make sure I was gonna be ok getting home. I thanked the nurses and doctors for their help and for for their continued service. Once again I'd like to thank all the nurses, doctors, and all the medical staff for all you do, you are very appreciated. I'd also like to thank the security staff for keeping the place safe, I know that department doesn't get enough credit for their hard work. read more

Advisory: Dr Katherine Gavin, UNMH Orthopedic Surgeon, performed a subtalar Fusion on my right ankle on June 24, 2023. She did not properly prepare the joint before stabilizing with screws. She left cartilage in the joint which is an extreme breach of duty as a licensed surgeon. As one would expect, I complained of persistent pain in the ankle post op, which should have raise a red flag, but they chose to essentially ignore, further exacerbating the breach of duty. Dr Burtenshaw, NM Orthopedic did a successful revision surgery to the right ankle on May 23, 2024 and complete fusion was accomplished and recorded on October 3, 2024. I post this for the simply benefit and hope that one must due a lot of research or you my experience 11 months of pain which was avoidable. read more

Brought my mother here. We stood outside the intake window for over two minutes while the worker watched videos on her phone. The front desk actually called her to say tell her to look up. Really bad, don't watch your videos if you work in the ER. They were nice enough once we were in. It is the initial contact that matters. So just found out the reason my mother has not been placed in a room is there in a a waiting list. 35 patients are in ER until a room opens, wow. This place needs better planning and more rooms read more

ICU center is great! But god bless if you go to the 7th floor to the cardiac center. For sure the worst care for heart patients. Push the nurses button and it takes over 30 mins for a response if you even get a response. They have bed written patients that they don't attend too. They are more focused on expanding the building than patient care. There are no excuses either get more RN's on the floor or just close it completely. read more

I would like to say something about the UNM Eye Clinic on University Blvd. I have found their staff and their Eye Specialists of the highest order. I would like to mention Dr. Cretara, Elizabeth. I was about to lose my vision , in my right eye, due to a viral infection. This was immediately diagnosed by her and treatment was started. This is a nightmare hospital that has cause permanent mental and physical damage to me. They should make a horror movie about this terrible place. It has completely ruined my quality of life. I have a diagnoses of multiple sclerosis and am treated as if I am making things up and am a complete inconvenience if i seek any care at all. I had major surgery here and despite several attempts for medical help from complications due to the surgery I was deserted by the surgical and post opp team. Mysurgery has now healed wrong and that has added to my physical issues. They also infiltrated an iv and would not fix it for 14 hours in the er. (This review is for the ER only) I wouldn't come back here unless my other option was bleeding out and dying. I arrived at 7pm and wasn't seen by the doctor until 3:40 am. In the meantime, I watched people in worse conditions than me fall asleep & leave from waiting so long. I've been using UNM Hospital/medical for a variety of healthcare services since I moved to NM. Given what I heard about NM lacking healthcare resources before moving here, my expectations were low. I was pretty nervous and quite frankly skeptical with the level of care/quality that I would receive thru the system. But so far, all my experiences with the healthcare professionals there had been pretty positive. From scheduling my first and having my primary care help refer me to others within the UNM network (be it dental work, women's care and/or physical therapy/rehabilitation)...to working on more specific issues (neurological work), I had had positive interaction with all the individuals I met/interacted with...whether they were virtual, in person or on the phone. I actually kind of liked it that almost everything I wanted to check/do healthwise, I could find within the UNM hospital/healthcare system. My primary care person at the family clinic was really nice and positive and I was glad I got assigned to him. Knowing that I relocated to NM and may not have all medical work set up, he (Hai Trinh) and his team even helped referred me to other unm hospital/health network. He also replied to my message when I sent him my past medical records. My physical therapists (Jack and Holly) did not judge me on my physical abilities and Jack even called me personally to let me know his recommendations on next steps even after I got discharged from the unit. My resident dentist (Ms Acosta) and dental hygienist were both so kind and friendly through all the sessions I underwent with them. My lab technician who helped me with my MRI was very kind and took the time to let me know what to expect and to make me feel comfortable during the procedure I had to go through for the first time. The only thing I didn't like though was that...the lead/wait time of an area you want to meet the professionals/had specific things look at/done could be ridiculously long (several months even!)...so you've gotta be a bit patient, persistent and let them know your flexibility in terms of location, timeline, and/or professionals you are willing to meet as well. Otherwise, I felt like I'm in good hands with all these professionals thus far! read more

If i could give negative ratings i would. I understand being busy however, the neglect and push for sedation rather than treatment is CRAZY. I've spent the past 48 hours as a visitor in the ER and most of the nurses were great! On the latter part of the trip, there's a nurse who stands out and for all the wrong reasons. DEBRAH. she's a RN a decently older woman, acts like she hates her job, has no sense of communication between colleagues or patients, she is reactive not proactive does not listen nor care and acts as if she's the doctor. Uses restraints, but leaves them on for a disgusting amount of time, and does not care if the patient is actually calm or not. Then got three nurses to back up a lie to seclude the patient which made him worried and upset as anyone would be. Then takes visitation hours based off the lie she created like she's a warden. She does not understand the basic concept of her position. She's evil and needs to go. I saw many many many people come in for bloodwork, housekeeping, nurses, doctors, she by far was the only one who hates her job and it shows. She's a liar and i wouldn't trust her with my charts. unprofessional unkind n terrifying. read more

Dear UNM Hospital, Over the weekend I had a nasty fall and broke 8 ribs, punctured a lung and lacerated my liver. The ambulance took me to UNM Hospital because of their trauma center. I am 64 years old and it was the 1st time that I had been in a hospital since I was born. So I wasn't quite sure of what to expect. That is as a patient. I was in the ER, then intensive care and then a regular room. I just wish I knew all of the names of the people that helped me. Which included PT'S, OT'S, RN'S TECH'S, the pain team and of course the doctors. They ALL were simply outstanding. But most of all I could tell that they ALL cared. My wife who was an RN for over 40 years has always told me that people don't care how much you know till they know how much you care, and they ALL cared.
