Unwired has saved my Berkeley Hills home from terrible cable internet! For more than a decade other companies have refused to extend their data lines and I have lived at 0.1mbs download speeds. No company could offer better because they all claimed that my house was just out of reach of their last node. Unwired solved that problem in less than a week, and even with their least expensive plan our internet speeds are amazing. They were very responsive to emails and calls, and their installation crew was incredibly kind and careful. Unwired is a good company. Their sales process can be a little bumpy, but once on board you get fast, competent response to issues. That's the reverse of most ISPs, which are gooey nice to get you sold, then you're just a number. I think a lot of Unwired customers are like me, in places where the only alternative is satellite. Whatever satellite services claim, it takes seconds to get a signal to space and back. Once everything lines up, speeds are OK. But the internet shunts packets back and forth constantly. Forget about gaming, Skype, sports, or business w/satellite. So Unwired's got a monopoly where I am. Monopolists aren't innovators. Unwired's offers haven't changed much in the 8 years I've used them. Speeds inched up a couple of mbps. It's still a reasonable deal, but tech advances, so each year Unwired's value slips. Unwired's tech is WiMAX, which bundles cell signals into a single receiver. WiMAX2 is developed, with twice the speed. Not a peep from Unwired. Yet having suffered satellite, and knowing how awful ATT or Comcast can be, Unwired remains a superior service - superior means better than others. I really, really wanted to go with an independent ISP and avoid the evil giants AT&T and Comcast. I had heard wonderful things about Sonic, but alas, I was 13,000 ft away from their nearest tower. Somewhere on the internets I heard about Unwired, and was glad to see it had excellent reviews here on Yelp. I called last saturday and received the answering machine. According to its instructions, I sent an email to Sales, writing that I wanted to get their standard plan and asking how to schedule an installation. Now, I myself work for an independent Berkeley business, and when someone sends us a message that reads "I want to give you money, please tell me how," we GET BACK TO THEM. It has been a year since we upgraded a location that was using HughesNet satellite Internet service to Unwired's microwave link, and we could not be happier! Unwired's performance is similar to cable broadband in terms of ping (low teens) and throughput (~12Mbps down/~4Mbps up on our current plan). Installation was handled by a competent crew who promptly completed their work and ensured all of our questions were answered. Reliability of the microwave link has been excellent overall with our location approximately 9 miles south of the transceiver. If your Internet service options are limited to dial-up (slow) or satellite (insanely expensive) and you are within Unwired's coverage zone, give them a call! read more

Unwired definitely doesn't provide the fastest download speeds around, but they have something that no one else in the area offers. Static IPs and permission to run servers for personal use at a price that's really affordable. TowerStream offers the same thing but for $500/mo If you're interested in practising running various servers and gaining networking experience then this is definitely for you. Just be careful about the sustained bandwidth that you use, because they don't allow use of a very high sustained bandwidth. read more

I've used Unwired for several companies, both in a business and datacenter capacity, ranging from multi-T1 service through their bread and butter CIR-equipped wireless circuits and as large as 1Gbps fiber. I've had nothing but great experiences here. Phones are answered within 3 rings, their on-calls actually wake up for pages and call me before I know something has happened (almost exclusively with my equipment.) Peter has always cracked the whip to get last-minute services installed ahead of schedule even if a creative solution is required. If you're tired of the BS from Comcast and ready to pay a little more for a properly provisioned and maintained solution, Unwired's the way to go around San Francisco. read more

I'm going to start by saying I'm a fairly picky person. I consider myself fairly hard to please. I live in a rural area so there are no services except satellite for TV, and dial up for internet. So after a year of using my 4g phone as a hotspot, with crappy 4g coverage at my house, I was excited to give Unwired a try. Their service is long range WiFi. I have had the service for two years now and have been nothing but impressed with this company. There have only been two service outages due to their equipment, and both times I was emailed multiple times from Unwired, keeping me informed of the situation. They explained what went out, which tower, how long the service would be down, etc. They made me feel like I was important. How often do you get that from Comcast or AT&T? NEVER! YOU have to call and most of the time they treat you like an idiot. Most recently I had a power supply failure on my modem/dish. I emailed Unwired support at 7PM on a Friday night. I totally expected to not hear from them until Monday. Well, guess what? The CEO of the company emailed me back within a half hour and helped me diagnose the problem via email that night! If you are not impressed by now, just wait. I emailed him the next day (Saturday) and asked if there was a local place I could find a power supply. He explained that the power supply was a unique unit and a normal store would not have it. He then volunteered to personally deliver a power supply to my work!! I told him I didn't expect him to do that and I would wait until Monday. If the deal wasn't already sealed at this point, it is now. I will be a customer for life with this company. The service itself is great. It has a very fast upload/download speed. The latency, which was my biggest concern, is VERY fast. I trade futures and a fast latency, or "ping" time is crucial. If you want excellent, small company service, fast internet, and a lower price than the big guys, give these guys a call. read more

I run a business and my home off of unwired. I can't recommend them too highly - besides the excellent service, the install time is remarkable. My first phone call was on Wednesday, and almost exactly 48 hours later, I am sending this review in by microwave. That includes an eval visit (at my request - my home installation is unconventional) and a second visit to do the actual work. In the work environment, we're supporting a staff of 15. I was attracted to this company by the reviews from people bragging about their customer service. And I thought I was agreeing with those reviews myself, during the initial days. Customer service was always readily available and friendly and seemingly very eager to help. And I still thought that way even just after a few days that my service was running when I had to contact them because the speeds I was getting were far from the speeds I was promised I would get, far from the speeds I signed up for and I was paying for. Even then, though, I still thought good customer service. They convinced me that the issue would be resolved promptly. Well, I know better now, nine months later. Nine months later, I am still getting ridiculous speeds. While I am paying for 6down/3up, my latest test clocked at 2down/1.12up. (And if you think that is bad, try the previous test: 0.26 Mb/s / 0.79 Mb/s). Speeds between 1.5 and 2.5 are common. Speeds higher than 4 or 5 are very rare. Of 6, which is what I am paying for, never happen. That to me is unwired stealing from me. Charging me for something that I am not getting. Besides the $49.95 I am paying a month, I paid $400 at beginning of service to pay for the dish antenna and the activation fee. read more

We've been using Unwired in the Berkeley Hills via our provider LMI. The connection during the day is usually strong. But right around what we used to call "prime time" the connection often grinds to a halt. The issue is persistent when I plug directly into the antennae vs going through a router. I'm shopping around for a new service now after being told too many times that the problem must be on my end or that there might be clouds obstructing the connection, I've given up. Because the problem usually occurs as night, customer support is not around to trouble shoot live. It's time for me to move on. read more

My business has been a customer of Unwired for just under a year coinciding with our decision to switch to a VOIP telephone system and the limited DSL service available to our location. We found their pricing to be competitive (had we been able to take advantage of alternatives). Service has been spot on with up and down speeds as promised with plenty of bandwidth for our phones, external network traffic and employees. We did need support twice and they were incredibly responsive, resolving the issue promptly and without argument. OK OK I persisted and finally got Sales. And long story short, have been a very satisfied customer of Unwired Ltd for over a year now. They are over the air line of sight transmitters; so if you don't see their antenna, forget about it. But for me, the antenna is atop the hill above Thornhill and I have a great view and great reception. They are reliable at 6/3 Mbps and deliver close to that when I check them, which is frequently. The I'net cost $43 per month. Set up and installation of the rooftop antenna are painless and quick. If you're tired of Uverse and Comcast, and if you see the Unwire antenna, recommend Unwire for your Internet needs. They do go way higher than my paltry 6 Mbs, but of course that costs more. The 6 Mbs is plenty for streaming movies. read more

However...here is the bad: Customer service lied to me on two occasions. 1)I called and let them know they owed me money. 2) the customer service rep who took the call said he would talk to the manager about my case and call me back in 20 minutes. I had to call back a week later as they did not call me back. I then wrote an email and asked them to call me. And some idiot made a snip and hit "Reply All" so I got the reply that wasn't meant for me to read!!!! There are better providers out there - use them. We recently moved to North Berkeley and wanted to get rid of ATT, Direct TV, and all of the large corporate ISPs. We went with Unwired and we couldn't be happier. They answer their phone and emails! They install on schedule. They even called us from the roof to ask about placement of the very small dish. The service is much faster than our old ATT DSL. The customer service rocks. After several years of paying for the premium package through Comcast and receiving less than premium service we decided to give Unwired a shot. The Unwired installers scheduled the installation at 9 AM as opposed to the typical 4 hour window that you expect from the larger providers. They showed up on time and were very friendly, competent, and professional. They got me set up really quickly and confirmed everything was working before leaving. I created a yelp account to write this review. I don't normally do this, but I feel obligated, given the service I've been provided. Firstly, Unwired doesn't provide service to all areas of Berkeley, but if you fall within their coverage, you should seriously consider them. The only two real ISPs to consider in the area are Unwired and Sonic. Sonic wasn't available to me, but thankfully Unwired was, so I went with them. Their standard service is radio internet, and it is certainly not the fastest option out there, but it isn't the slowest either. I have no problem streaming video and doing other normal online interactions on my standard Unwired internet. If you are lucky enough to live in a certain pocket of west Berkeley, Unwired does offer a fiber service that I would really love to try, which undoubtedly offers much greater speeds (http://www.unwiredltd.com/fiber.php). Regardless, the regular service is still good and the uptime/stability is good. The two real shining points with Unwired are its support and its general approach to customer service. SUPPORT Unlike major ISPs, if you experience a problem and need quick assistance, you can easily reach a knowledgeable HUMAN to assist you. I think they literally have someone on call all hours outside of normal business hours. So, you can call their support number (510-868-1614) or email them (support@unwiredltd.com) and get a quick and helpful response every time. I can't stress enough how much of a pleasure it's been working with Unwired staff. It's a shame in this age of technology that Unwired is an outliers for providing fast and efficient customer support, but that's the reality we are facing. Have a problem with your Comcast service or need something changed on your Verizon account? Good luck! You'll enter some telephonic robot maze when you call their support number, and when you finally reach a human after 30-45 minutes, it's not uncommon that they will be rude, unknowledgeable, or simply uncaring about solving your problem. Not with unwired. On top of that, the guy who came out to set up my unwired account was incredibly friendly, smart, and good at explaining the technology and setup to anyone interested to learn. This is probably never advisable, but the guy was so pleasant that I felt completely comfortable leaving him alone in my house for 2 hours while I stepped out to run some errands. Everyone I've talked to over their support phone/email has been equally pleasant. RESPECTING THE CUSTOMER This ties in a little with the support section above. Having internet service from Unwired is just simple. The setup is painless. If you have a problem and need a solution, the support process is simple. If you need to change something on your account or get a quick question answered, its just plain simple. This doesn't sound like much of a selling point, but if you've experienced service from the ISP giants (Comcast, Verizon, etc), you will appreciate the true value of these statements. Your scalp will thank you after the drastic reduction of hair-pulling that you will experience when switching to Unwired. There is another major factor that sets Unwired apart from the competition in 2017. Recently, congress decided that its a good idea to allow ISPs to sell their customers' browsing history (https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2017/03/for-sale-your-private-browsing-history/). This is a huge violation of customer privacy for the sole benefit of enriching ISPs who are, in many cases, providing bad customer service and over-priced products as it is. Unwired's own Peter Kranz was quick to respond by creating the ISP Privacy Pledge network a few short days after the new legislation passed: http://www.ispprivacypledge.net/ (its also worth mentioning that Sonic is on that list). Not only does this provide peace of mind to Unwired customers, but it also benefits the larger community by rallying like-minded IPSs around a noble and publicly stated customer-first cause. It reminds us that, while the industry is dominated by greedy monolith corporations, there are still good options out there willing to stand up for us. While Unwired could make more money selling your data, they are choosing not to. Yes, they provide a paid service. Yes, they make money. But you come first. We are spoiled in the bay area to have two legitimate ISPs that take customer service and privacy seriously. With Unwired, you can rest assured that you are their first priority, and they (unlike the major ISPs) will not ignore you as long as they can, over-charge you for shoddy products, or sell you out just to make a fast buck. I have been a customer of Unwired for several years. Their service has been fast and reliable. Today, I had a problem with my internet connection and the router. I could not get the internet connection and the router to recognized each other. I spent nearly 3 hours on the phone with the Unwired tech, and we were finally able to solve the problem. The tech was patient and helpful and there was not a wait on hold to get to a tech. Unwired Ltd. is a wireless ISP serving the San Francisco Bay Area. I've been with them for about a year, and have been mostly pleased with their service. They describe their bandwidth as "bursty", meaning fast for a bit, then it tapers off to a lower speed. I have 6Mbps Symmetric service, and I don't think I've ever seen that kind of speed for more than a few seconds. The service is reliable, and the customer service is very personal - I regularly exchange email with the owner. Latency is very low, less than DSL to the first hop. I hate to dock a star for bandwidth given that they are very upfront about describing it as "bursty", but I think I'd rather have the service described as an average bandwidth rate that is burstable to X. read more
