Now the house I am in on Northside of Berkeley is one of their single-residence accounts. At the apartments LMI would answer service requests very quickly, and did not hesitate to install a new radio when the existing one reached the end of its life cycle. Now, as always, I can get knowledgeable tech staff on the phone for whatever I need or want to know, and usually I end up knowing well more than the momentary need calls for. read more

I have been with LMI for over a decade now. Best customer service ever! Always so helpful patient and kind. The rates are on par with the big guys after the deceptive introductory rates expire. I see some mention of outages here. I would chalk it up to their leasing partners reducing investment in copper and focusing on fiber. Remember when cellular upgrades happened every year or two? Unless you migrated to the new system and bought a new phone you had lots of issues. I think that's what's happening now. Fiber is the latest and greatest. If you can upgrade it's worth it. If you live in an area it's not available yet copper is just going to continue to be problematic and it's not just w/LMI. I have friends on Comcast and ATT copper or DSL and they have the same problems. read more

LMI is the only IT service I trust that works with home offices like mine. Worth my crossing the Bay for! Yes I looked around closer to home. One IT service, in my neighborhood, sold me a bad charger that fried my laptop battery. Not trust-inspiring-- if they got a charger wrong, what could happen with their IT? With that finally done, LMI's Support team walked me through my last steps. With the same generous, expert support I've always gotten from LMI. So glad to keep LMI's IT and repair services! I'm not an ongoing customer of theirs. I just needed some ethernet cable run in my house for 4 security cameras. Dhonam, one of their installers, did a great job running exterior conduit, interior wiring, and a Leviton Quickport patch panel. I underestimated how long the job would take. I had guessed maybe one hour per camera, so 4 hours. It actually took him 12 hours! He showed up around 9am and didn't leave until it was all done at 9pm working in the dark with a headlamp. That's dedication. Their price was reasonable as well -- certainly worth it to me so I personally didn't have to crawl around in both my attic and crawl space. I've had DSL service through LMI.net for about 6 years. Every once in awhile, something happens. When it happened this past weekend, I waited to see if it would clear up on its own. It was still acting up Monday night, so I called LMI.net service at 6:15pm. I figured I would get voicemail. Within 20 seconds, I was talking to a live person. I explained that I had DSL, it had been acting up, and gave my name. The service rep responded immediately, "I'm seeing your line on my screen and I can see there is a problem. Let me do a quick test." I said, "I've always had good service from you folks." He responded, "Thank you, but the overall industry has set such a low bar, that all we have to do is answer the phone and we're way ahead of them!" After about 30 seconds he said, "I'm seeing there is a short in your line. Usually with DSL, that means a problem on our end. I'll have the first service technician available in the morning to come out and fix it. And we'll call you when he is finished to make sure it's working again." A repairman was at the house at 9AM Tuesday morning, and the problem was resolved. And they called back to confirm the success of the repair. I have been an LMi customer for many years and, on their recommendation, I recently made the move from DSL to fiber. The initial conversation took place via email, with responses arriving within an hour to every question I asked...and I had many! I didn't feel in the least bit pressured and was just given the facts. Based on the responses, I decided to make the move. After one glitch, which was related to what I believe was Sonic time overload (Sonic runs the cable into the home), I made a second appointment. I had a very specific request on how the cable should be run. However, the Sonic technician was terrific and worked out how he could run it exactly as I had asked. As this involved working in the crawl space, it wasn't the simplest task. Once the cable had been run, an LMi technician was here within an hour to set up my desktop! I don't think LMi could have made it any easier. If there was one "difficulty" it was having a four-hour window for Sonic to arrive. That said, once the Sonic technician arrived, everything just flowed so easily. As for the fiber, everything is working perfectly I also know that if something goes wrong, LMi is a PHONECALL (yes, a phonecall and a real person!) away. Great job, LMi! Thank you! read more

Full disclosure - I worked here for about six months - 20 years ago. I was a customer before that - and I still am. Their Phiber serve works really well. Tech support is knowledgeable and helpful, they're solar-powered, and they're local. I like that I'm spending my money here in the community. Both my mom and I have been LMi customers for about a year now. Both of us have been very happy with their service. No contract, no 30-day notice, no BS that many other companies give you. Price is very reasonable too, and speeds were fine. I am moving to another part of Oakland next week, and the one downside is I won't be able to use LMi any more. The outages are frequent and never explained. The website basically says 'there's an outage, we don't know why and have no idea when it will be fixed.' Thanks guys. Try calling them? After 20 attempts with no answer I've given up. Check their socials linked on their website? They haven't posted or updated their Facebook or Twitter accts in years and won't respond there either. The temptation to support local businesses is laudable, and you should keep doing that. In this instance, go with a more well known provider who has a good reliable service and don't bother giving LMI a chance. I've never had so many outages with any ISP in my entire life and the time stolen by trying to resolve constant issues makes LMI far too expensive in the grand scheme of things. Time for a post-honeymoon review. Still holding at a solid 5 stars. Download speeds on my hard-wired computer have been consistently in the mid-900s. I've transitioned over to their VOIP telephone service, and that's been fine. Comcast is history. It's been a rare pleasure to download the entire MS Office suite in a few minutes as opposed to a half-hour or longer. read more

I signed up with LMI to provide a fiber drop to my house. Wyatt Atkinson scheduled an installation date and time. That time came and went so I tried contacting Wyatt both by phone and by email. Nothing. No response. I finally got a call back. They apologized for the mix-up, saying that they needed a letter signed by my neighbor allowing them to access their back yard. It would have been nice if they had informed me of this requirement previously. So the installation was rescheduled for a week later. I will wait to see what happens. read more

Excellent service for installation of fiber connection. Technician Derrick went beyond what was expected to get me up and running with a router I purchased. (I probably did need a router so fancy, with dozens of settings enough for a business, so consider going with what LMI offers for the simpler installation.) I've had service with them for a least 15 years. Never once did Sonic network go down, and LMI was around to upgrade twice. Couldn't be more pleased. read more

It was with great sadness that I had to cancel our business account with LMI today as our office has closed for the foreseeable future and our employees are now working from home. LMI has been a terrific internet service provider for our company throughout the years. Their service has been steady and good, and whenever we did encounter problems (most often due to no issue from them) their customer service was quick to respond, courteous and efficient. Update- I spoke with Sonic, LMi's just provides a Sonic connection - they were clear that I'd be lucky to get 20Mbps at this location. LMi's staff doesn't appear to know anything on their own, and management there is dishonest about what they do (they just are the middle man between you and sonic). I, like many people, was a bit frustrated dealing with the big internet service providers. The impersonal treatment, high bills and long waits if something went wrong. I looked for a local ISP here in the Bay Area, and found LMI.net They are locally run, by smart, polite professionals who do care about their customers. During the free installation the tech at my house noticed the wiring was less than optimal and did some work which effectively doubled my download speed. Additionally, when a problem occurred with the router I had, they brought a replacement to my front door. The rates were great (less than 1/2 what I'd been paying a big provider), the trouble shooting team almost immediately responsive, and I really liked having these folks taking care of my internet cares. Pretty good so far... When moving into Berkeley, a town with a reputation for anti-establishment, I decided to adopt the mantle of my new neighbors. Instead of signing up - once again - with ComCast, I decided to give LMI my internet business. I work from home and a solid, fast internet connection is important to me. We discussed various choices, and because of my location, LMI could not provide me with DSL, but they did have a wireless option. The LMI technician installed a dish attached to my chimney, aimed it across the Bay at the Sausalito tower and within a few hours I was connected and surfing. Now, one month later and with the full wisdom of hindsight, I believe I made the right decision. My service has been very good, and trouble-free. I can stream Netflix and Hulu with nary a glitch. Even though my prior connection to Comcast was 50Mbps and my LMI connection 24Mbps, I hardly notice the difference. If anything, the Internet experience with LMI is more consistent throughout the day. And I can feel righteous that my hard-earned coin is circulating in my newly adopted community instead of feeding the bonus package of some CEO. read more

Ordered two weeks ago, $40 a month plus taxes for ADSL and voice with unlimited calling US and Canada. AT&T would charge $52 for that. http://www.lmi.net/services/phlo installer came out Thursday, everything went smoothly. We're 9000 feet from the nearest CO so it's not super-fast, Sonic.net speed test shows 2.94 down and 0.86 up. If I replaced the old wiring we'd probably get 5-6 down. The filters have been improved since the last time I had DSL, there's almost no noise on the voice line. read more

I kept reading that there weren't any good options for wireless in the east bay. Lucky I didn't give up! LMI is reasonable, fast and has great customer service. I was worried I would be out of range of the PHLO service, but apparently I'm in the perfect location (near Lake Merritt). It's $50/month plus a start-up fee that is variable based on your contract and equipment you need. The connection is great! My wife and I are both able to stream separate TV shows at the same time (sad I know, but it's the world we live in). LMI is great! read more

2nd Edit: LMI is a great company, and actively working at its very best Just got an e-mail from Gary, the owner of LMI.net, which made me reconsider this review. My 1) point was wrong, and LMI was at no way at fault for the trouble with phone lines/locks at my apt. Good internet, thats for sure. The internet provided here in Berkeley by LMI is THOUSANDS of times better than what AT&T/Comcast would ever wish they could provide. But service? Oh my. 1) Resolved: Both me and the person handling internet were on vacation, so delays were expected. They take forever. It took them more than 2 months to process my application. I sent around 3 as I got a bit desperate, but they got around eventually and told me I'd get the 1st month free. Never happened until I actively called them 4 days in a row and sent over 10 e-mails. 2) As much as I'd like to remove this one, it may have to stay LMI doesn't honor their application. I was told the setup fee was free, given I apply for 1 year, according to the application at the time. Apparently free meant 100$, and now they don't offer that anymore and don't "remember" offering it ever, and the website has changed. 3) They actually don't answer e-mails - at least regularly? I've probably sent over 10+ e-mails, and the only one I ever got a reply to was one where I went rage-mode and had somebody forward it to somebody else and for them to finally reply to me with my 1st month free. For my birthday, I was introduced to the "blue screen of death." Ugh. Not a PC person myself, I didn't fully grasp the ramifications of this right away. And I really had no idea who to call or what to do. I remembered LMI.net was located down the street from where my own business was first located. So I gave them a call. I spoke to Jonathan, one of the co-owners. He talked me down from my state of panic and explained what would or could happen going forward. He set me up with an appointment to have the tech come out the next morning. Will, the tech showed up promptly and worked diligently to try and recover my failed hard drive. Unfortunately, my drive was so badly damaged that I had to send it out to another drive recovery company to recover my files. LMI, and mainly Jonathan, went above and beyond to help me get them recovered quickly and with minimal expense (which was still pretty costly, so this was a bonus). They worked with me on my timeline (I needed this done yesterday - these were my business files I had lost) and numerous phone calls and emails later my business is up and running again with all my data recovered. 5 back ups later, I hope I never have to need this kind of service ever again. But if I do, LMI will be the first that I call. read more

I used LMI for internet service. They were great about getting things set up correctly. My internet service was very reliable, and on the few occasions I had to contact customer service, they were very quick to respond to issues. When I moved out of state, I was able to easily cancel my service by email. I'll absolutely use them again when I get set up in a new apartment in town. read more

Edit: Gary M, the owner of LMI, messaged me in response to this review. As a result, I feel I should clarify the following: The management company overseeing our apartment complex dealt with LMI, and our Internet usage was covered by our lease. This meant that I did not have as direct of a relationship with LMI as the other Yelp reviewers (though my roommates and I contacted them directly multiple times). For all I know, they could indeed be a 5-star ISP/tech company in all other cases. But my main point still stands: Any amount of "speed" from an Internet provider is worthless when they're unreliable, and this was the case for me for four years. ------- Perfect example of how "buying local" isn't always a good thing. The apartment complex I've lived in for the past four years was always served by LMI. Read: "I've lived in an apartment complex with terrible Internet service for the past four years." Previously, the fastest download speed you'd get was 1Mbps; they managed to up that to 3Mbps last year. But that's assuming you could even download anything. Even in low-usage hours (like, say, 3am), it was a coin-flip whether you were able to access videos on Youtube or any other site. And forget about streaming music or playing online games, since you'd often lag out in the first couple of minutes. I'm not talking about high-bandwidth sites like Netflix, either -- I'm referring to things like internet messagers like AIM and low-fi radio streams like SomaFM. Our apartment admins have quite recently arranged a deal with Web-Pass; now that 3Mbps download speed's shot up to 35Mbps. Granted, Web-Pass is certainly an exception among local ISPs (in a good way), as shown by their Yelp reviews. But conversely, LMI was an exceptionally bad local ISP experience for me. read more

We have used LMI as our ISP for the last two years, while living in the Pacific Heights neighborhood of San Francisco. As we are preparing to move, I thought it was appropriate to give a holistic review of LMI's fantastic service. LMI has been wonderful from day 1. They were able to book a tech to come install our service within a week of our order and the service worked perfectly without any repeat visits. LMI's top end wireless speeds are not as fast as some of the other SF ISPs; however, unlike other services that promise very high "up to" speeds, but then regularly deliver well below those rates, LMI consistently delivered strong speeds. We have had no trouble streaming Netflix / Prime, while I have simultaneously used my work's VPN and my boyfriend used his iPad to browse social media sites and email. Finally, today we needed to end our service at the end of the month. We are only canceling because we are moving to a different state that LMI does not service. The cancellation process was very simple. We emailed them the end date. And they emailed us a confirmation as well as what we should expect on our prorated bill. If you live in the Bay Area and are looking to avoid the major ISPs and the numerous headaches associated with them, I fully recommend LMI. They offer fantastic service, pricing and support. read more

Far and beyond the BEST internet service provider I've ever had. Got set up earlier this month. Took about a week and half to get set up from the first time I called to browsing the net. The best part about LMI is that you can reach them in about 30 seconds as opposed to the hour(s) it often takes with large ISPs ("Your call is important to us. Please wait for the next available representative.") Had some trouble with a modem/router I bought off Craigslist. Brought it into LMI's office in Berkeley and in about 10 minutes they were able to figure out the problem and set it up right there so all I had to do when I got home was plug it in and all my wi-fi information was already set up. Speeds are great as well - our two computers easily can stream videos at once. Such a breath of fresh air in the ISP world. Thank you. read more

I brought my 7-year-old desktop CPU here after having spent 9 days and nearly $300 for a "free diagnosis within 36 hours" service at the Geek Squad, Best Buy. Despite the 9 days and the $300, I never did receive a diagnosis, merely several referrals to Best Buy Sales rep trying to sell me one of his new computers. My sole contact at LMI.Net was with Sam (+ two delightful resident dogs) so I can really only speak to the service which he gave me (and the very warm and friendly canine wlecome). Sam is a delightful character -- a true geek in the best geek tradition! He reminds me of the folks who used to tinker with UNIX and DOS systems in the early 1980s in that he takes obvious pleasure in uncovering the how's and why's of computer malfunctions just to satisfy his curiosity. He is how I'd imagine Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, and/or Steve Wozniak might have been in their unheated garage in the late 1970s -- he delights in solving computer problems! And boy, did I have a computer problem (-:. Through his diligence (he worked through the whole weekend to try to uncover what the problem(s) was/were as I was in a critical situation with a new job pending that was dependent on this computer being brought back to life), he was able to uncover a whole host of problems that seemed to have befallen my computer all at once eg., the heat sink was gone, as was my newish quad core processor, the motherboard, the power supply and the video card. Astonishing that this machine functioned well until it didnt function at all. I'd bring my computer to Sam again in a heartbeat. He's one cool operator who knows his trade and is a helpful kind and patient soul to boot. The world would be a better place if it were populated with more Dr. Sams .... read more

LMI / LanMinds of Berkeley has provided me with fabulous internet service for years, including some times when I needed (and got) fabulous personal assistance from them. For the past few years, absolutely nothing has caused me to call LMI with service related questions, because service has been outstanding -- but it's great to know that any time I need assistance, I can talk to a technically competent person who genuinely cares. Ever since I've been with LMI I have enjoyed fabulously fast internet download and upload speeds, with an ISP who genuinely cares as much about net neutrality as I do. This means a lot in a day and age when most of the "big guys" in the business are sometimes saying positive things about ensuring internet access for everyone, but who instead are often involved with shady activities such as artificially limiting their customers' upstream bandwidth. You won't find any such double-speak with LMI, and they are good neighbors, too -- actively working to provide free public WiFi corridors throughout Berkeley. For those who are environmentally concerned, you'll be glad to know that LMI is a green company, running on solar power as much as possible. LMI / LanMinds is one of the best ways to vote with our dollars for so many good reasons.... including the best service and best people. read more

LMI.net was EXACTLY what I wanted to find as an alternative to the cable modem and corporate DSL options. You get to talk to local people who know what they are doing, not people reading off scripts in some faraway call center. The service was friendly, reliable and reasonably priced. If you can live with Internet speeds that consistently exceed your expectations from only a few years ago, you'll be really happy here. I called LMI last week to ask about getting internet set up at my new apartment. The phone call took maybe twenty minutes, and the quote was a little higher than what most of my friends pay with Comcast, but it was so convenient I decided to give them a go. Over the weekend I got an email telling me someone from ATT would come out to my property to do the initial setup today (8/6) between 8am and noon, and I would likely not need to be home - I stayed home anyway, just in case, but around noon I got an email from LMI saying the first stage had been successful and asking me to call to schedule the next (and final) step. I did, and they were able to send someone within a one-hour window on the same day, 2-3pm. Ken showed up at 2:07. He called, as I had requested, so I could go and let him in at the gate, and he was immediately helpful and no-nonsense while somehow still being warm and friendly. He was super nonplussed by my half-moved-into apartment, and he even helped me figure out which key would let us into the basement with nary an eyeroll! Twenty minutes after he arrived I had a wifi network with a name and password of my choosing, and for the past two hours it's been working great! Obviously I can't comment on the long-term reliability of the Internet service itself, but on a customer service and general convenience level LMI tops all the service providers I've ever worked with. read more
