Pretty decent casual omakase for a great price. Wide enough selection on the menu so that there's something for everyone.

My boyfriend and I had a date night here and it was fantastic. We sat at the bar and the sushi chef was friendly and personable. We initially came in for the omakase but were intrigued by the specials, so the chef suggested if we wanted more "interesting" fish to skip the omakase and order ala carte. While it was a bit pricy, it was worth it! Each piece of fish was fresh. The rice was perfect. We also ordered the miso eggplant and it was one of the best miso eggplant dishes we've ever had! Highly recommend this place.

Had Lunch Lite set. they just use too many salmon, the first ceviche-ish dish was salmon, then had 2salmon out of 5 sushi.. in Japan actual sushi place does not even serve salmon but since Salmon is very popular in US, I understand that it's on the menu and one of them to be a salmon but it was just too much. quality was okay.

The owners of Torrance's Whitefin Market opened a restaurant. So of course the fish is great. UO's Premium set lets you try them all. At $78, 10 pieces with a few extras is quite a deal. They start with some edamame, which is overcooked. But the Salmon Ceviche is fabulously fresh. First round: Salmon and Bluefin Tuna are great, then there's pearly pink Hamachi yellowtail, creamy Madai red snapper with a pop of yuzu pepper, and then a lovely Hokkaido Scallop. There's a Hand Roll of eel and avocado to break things up, and I love the crunch of the freshly toasted nori. Next is Nodoguro, a fish the menu calls "black throat" - I think it's a perch? It's delicious, whatever it is. King Mackerel is meaty, Goldeneye Snapper is pretty, Toro is always awesome, and Hokkaido Uni is impossibly creamy and sweet. The ending is sweet and simple, with a lovely roll of snow crab. The quality is undoubtedly great, but I do wish the rushi rice were better. A good rice can really enhance the sushi, and their did not. The service also felt a bit rushed. They were bringing out the courses rather quickly, but I'll chalk that up to a nearly empty dining room for a weekday lunch. They're still fairly new so I look forward to seeing how they grow and evolve. Hope to be back in the nearer future.

UO Nigiri is the sushi omakase restaurant from fish wholesaler Whitefin Market, which means their fish is fresh and high quality. They have a small parking lot and walking distance from Costco. If you have tire appointment, this is the perfect place to wait out the services. For the food: The Nigiri Courses are the best way to try a variety of high quality sushi at a decent price. The nigiri, handroll and cutroll are all chef's choice. UO's Lite Course is the perfect portion for lunch, when there is a small discount during lunchtime.

I went here for my birthday and everything was great! The server was nice and attentive. It was quiet and not too busy at all. I even noticed the traditional seating area which would be great to try next time I've been to Japan and the sushi here feels authentic. The hand rolls and nigiri were great! We also got hot sake and green tea. Everything was so good, I would come here again.

SUPERB quality and EXOTIC choices flown in from Japan, Korea and all over. AUTHENTIC. Omakase is a great value. We are aficionados and this is WAY UP THERE

I'm an absolute sushi snob and have spent time in Japan and am hard to please and was blown away. The experience, the chefs, the flavor - the absolute real deal. I have legit nothing negative to say was shocked how good!

    Premium Omakase meal was beautiful!

We had a great experience here! We went here on a Saturday night for my boyfriend's impromptu birthday dinner around 7:30pm. The place is small, cozy and intimate. It seems like a cute date night spot for couples and small parties as omakase isn't the cheapest, but it's a great dinner option to treat yourself. We got the Premium Omakase with Suntory Premium Malts. It came with an edamame and salmon appetizer, 10 premium sushi, 1 snow crab hand roll, and 1 4-piece Toro Scallion cut roll. Our plates came out one after the other and allowed us enough time to sit and enjoy each one after. The waiters were nice and explained each of the plates to us, how to eat which with soy sauce or not, etc. I especially loved having miso soup to order to end as it settled our full stomachs well. And, as a surprise, they brought out a green tea ice cream with red bean and mochi (the chewiest mochi I've ever had!) with a candle on top for his birthday, so sweet! They already include a 16.5% service charge so no extra tipping required. Great for an intimate little date night.

One of the worst sushi restaurants I've tried. It's close to our house, and my husband and I had been curious about it for a while. We finally went today, but unfortunately, we will never go back. The interior was cozy and clean, and the service was fine. But the food itself was extremely disappointing. The rice was undercooked and lacked even the basic flavor of properly made sushi rice. The scallop had a strong fishy smell and was unpleasant. Even though I was very hungry (and usually when you're hungry, everything tastes better), not even that made the food enjoyable. Sadly, the taste was closer to 1 star, no matter how much the atmosphere and service tried to make up for it.

    Kevin S.

I've come here twice to try their omakase offering. Once for their middle tier and a second time for their top tier since it's advertised as premium fish. I cannot in good conscience recommend either based on the quality of the food at that price. Service: fantastic. Interior design terrific. But the sushi is on par with much cheaper establishments. In particular the rice quality is incredibly underwhelming. Compared to say sugarfish close by which I can confidently say had rice that is delicious on its own and accentuates the fish, I'm not even sure UO uses sushi rich. The fish quality is moderate at best, if I'm paying close to 100 dollars after tax and a mandatory 17% tip I should be at least impressed or feel I got my money's worth. At this juncture it feels overpriced. I don't think I was fleeced but if I want good quality sushi I would be doing self harm electing to come here for satisfy that craving.

    Kenny L.

I would give this place 3.5 / 5 stars. Sashimi and sushi were very fresh. We especially liked the salmon tartare appetizer, Aburi salmon sushi and fresh Hokkaido scallop. They have a mandatory 16.5% service charge automatically added to the final bill. That way you don't have to tip but with the automatic service charge we expected excellent service. The servers were a bit awkward and not as experienced. They were nice, but it just felt a bit unnatural and stiff. Something that I hope improves over time since the servers may probably be new and are getting used to serving and explaining the 3 different omakase course. My wife and I chose the UO Favorite course which is the middle one priced at $48 / person we got our son the UO Lite course for $35 / person. The amount was just right for him. Our course was good as well. The total with alcoholic drinks, 3 omakase courses and one dessert came to around $241 (16.5%) service fee included. I guess the price is reasonable but still a bit pricy for what we got. The interior is simple, clean and nice. Very spacious.

UO Nigiri recently opened last week in Marina Del Rey. They specialize in omakase (nigiri, roll, hand roll sushi) and ala carte sushi. If you're allergic to shellfish, they will accommodate and swap out the shellfish for fish. The staff was very friendly and nice. There's parking in the lot in front of the restaurant or on the street. It's a very small restaurant, so good for small groups of 2-4 people. It's a pretty pricey place... $48 for the UO favorite (middle tier omakase) and I left still hungry.

Even if don't like seabass, you must try this one! it's buttery, perfectly charred and melts in your mouth. It's so rich and comforting, the fish is always perfectly cooked, and it's more than enough food for two people. Be sure to order a side of seaweed and make your own hand rolls at the table. The unadon, hamburger steak, and curry udon were all really good, but the yakitori skewers tended to be disappointing. The Tsukune was dry, the Negima was quite bland. The menu now leans much more toward fine dining, and the prices definitely reflect that. As someone who's more of a casual diner and really enjoyed the previous menu, this new direction just wasn't for me. The staff were very kind and took the time to explain all the changes, which I appreciated. However, we ordered about six dishes and were surprised at how small the portions were. On top of that, most of the items were unfortunately pretty bland. Sadly, I won't be returning, and I really miss the old menu.

It was as good as I remembered, and probably even better. I can't imagine letting another eight and a half years pass without going back. The only negative is that parking is either difficult or $15, which feels bad in a pretty quiet residential area. Better to take a car in any case, so you can enjoy the extensive selection of sakes. We shared a full-sized bottle, I forget which but I think it was a junmai daiginjo, and it was lovely. Tsubaki is such a nice, welcoming little izakaya. Service is great, the atmosphere warm and easy. You just want to sit back and drink at a leisurely pace. The food is excellent, with a robust menu of creative Japanese food. We shared everything, starting with a stellar kanpachi crudo with ume ponzu, shiso, sweet onion and habanero pickles, and furikake. My favorite dish of the night was the tsukune katsu. I love tsukune, the tare-glazed chicken meatballs you'll find in any yakitori place. This was my first time having them in katsu form, panko-fried and served over cabbage with Kewpie mayo and tonkatsu sauce. The chawanmushi was delicious, silky steamed egg custard topped with Dungeness crab, truffle salt, and mitsuba. Likewise the kinoko tempura, an array of maitake, shiitake, and enoki mushrooms fried light and crispy, with yuzu shichimi and tentsuyu for dipping. We got a skewer of bonchiri from the yakitori menu, delightfully chewy bites of charcoal-grilled jidori chicken tail. Finally, a plate of yakisoba, pan-fried noodles with house-cured Peads & Barnetts char siu, pickled green garlic, and cracklin. We got the hojicha parfait, and it was more or less my ideal dessert. Roasted green tea soft serve with sesame black sugar burnt miso and candied walnuts with cornflake dust. Cold, light, sweet. I could eat a whole one by myself pretty much any time. After nine years in business, Tsubaki feels like an Echo Park institution, and the kitchen is as strong as ever. This was a wonderful dinner, one I hope to repeat soon, with more sake, more yakitori, and more hojicha parfait.
