Pacifica isn't known for it's restaurants and eateries, so a solid Japanese spot like Uoyakutei is very welcome! The restaurant is located right off Highway 1 Southbound at Rockaway Beach, which is a great little area to walk around in. There are coastline views, a handful of local shops to pop into, and the Mori Point hiking trail if you want to get in a few thousand steps. Parking is available at all times throughout Rockaway Beach, making access to the restaurant easy even during peak hours. Uoyakutei itself has a good variety of classic Japanese dishes. You'll find sushi, ramen, skewers, specialty meats and fish, bento boxes, all manners of rice and vegetables, and beer/sake all on the menu. On my trip there, I tried the Gyu Skewers, Chicken Karage, and Chicken Teriyaki dinner plate. All of them were amazing! Particularly the Gyu skewers. I don't know what the chefs season the meat with, but it's tender, juicy, and so very tasty. At $4 per plate, with 2 skewers per plate, they're a very good deal and probably the best thing at restaurant. The restaurant has a decent amount of table seating, as well as a sushi bar for single diners who wish to pop in and out and get something quick. Service is also very good all around. While the hosts can sometimes get busy checking people in and getting them to their tables, the sushi chefs and servers are all very welcoming and warm. It's a great experience beyond the food, and the food's quality just makes it an even better local spot. Ordered food for delivery this evening directly from their website. An hour later, got a call from the business that they are closing and for us to pick up the $75 food order because the driver had not yet arrived. I am home sick, which is why I placed the order. I asked for a refund and they told me they could not authorize it. I did not order through a third party, just directly from the business and it says my order will be delivered in 5 minutes. I use to order teriyaki beef combo dinner. However lately the quality of the meat hass significantly went downhill. The it f steak is tough? When my husband and I first walked over to this restaurant we were a little skeptical. The outside looked like a former Jack in the Box, but you should never judge a book by its cover. We ordered: -Chicken Karaage which came with spicy aioli. The fried breading was a little thicker than we are used to, but the chicken was so juicy and flavorful. -Tuna Lover Roll (spicy tuna, asparagus tempura topped wth blue fin tuna and crunchy flakes) was my favorite! You can never go wrong with blue fin tuna! Yum!! -Giant Roll (unagi, avocado topped with walu, onions, scallions, tobiko and friend garlic) was pretty interesting. It had a lot of different textures from the onions and garlic, but still really fresh. -Warrior Roll (salmon, avocado, lemon topped with hamachi and garlic sauce) really packed a flavor bomb in your mouth. It looked the simplest, but probably had the most flavor. The mix of lemon and garlic really push through and complement the salmon. We here for a early dinner around 5pm and it had a good amount of people. No wait, but I could tell that it would start getting crowded after we left. Worst service I've had in a long time. Came on an early Friday evening before the dinner rush. Food took a long time to come out. My husband's order took about 30-40 min to come out, my kids are I were already done eating before his food arrived. The waiter didn't bring water or utensils for our kids. We tried to order more food because the portions were small and ask for utensils, but after getting his attention and making eye contact at least 3 times, he would just walk away and not come back. Very odd. We finally just gave up. Food is just ok. Small portions and not worth the price. Overall a frustrating experience with hungry kids who just got crankier and crankier with the long wait for food and lack of basic utensils/dinnerware/water. Uoyakutei Restaurant in Rockaway Beach! Wow! Wow! Spectacular. We had never been there, took a chance and are so grateful that we did. Apparently, they just recently remodeled and changed their menu. It was easily one of the best sushi experiences of our lives. I am not joking. (I am a chef, so I have had a lot of sensational sushi in my life...) For my first impression, I was so relieved to find a Pacifica restaurant that has a cozy, hip, welcoming atmosphere, but it was the food that took us by complete surprise! The server was a delightful young guy who had obvious pride at their new offerings. The new menu is an excellent cross between traditional sushi but leveled up by inspiring modern twists and top notch plating. We had a Kobe Beef Tataki with a hint of truffle oil (luscious), an inspired "taco" made with tempura nori topped with avocado, seared fish and salsa (pictured, crispy delicious) and the Chu Toro Sashimi (pictured, incredibly good). We even tried their super simple Okra Skewers, they are brilliant. Who knew about Okra Skewers? I didn't... The use of traditional shisho, yuzu and ponzu was spot on, but the additions of green peppercorn, truffle oil, garlic butter and so much more in a very restrained way really made me connect to the spirit and creativity of the chefs with every dish. I love Pacifica so much and we have some brilliant casual food (Rosalind Bakery, Red Eye Grill, Soul Grind Coffee, Pacifica Pizza Project, and the more upscale Pacifica Brewery) but not yet the "destination" spot to bring out of town guests in my opinion. This is the best Japanese restaurant I have ever been to. The menu has an incredible amount of variety. The wait staff are super friendly and solicitous. It's in an out-of-the-way location, barely visible from Highway 1. It's small and cozy. I have gone there with a large group, with one other person, and alone. Each time the food was amazing, and they keep coming up with more dishes I have never seen at other Japanese restaurants, such as crunchy veggie tacos! We eat a plant-based diet, which in another Japanese restaurant we've gone to for decades has meant very limited choices, such as vegetarian tempura. I just wish delivery was available. read more

Open early weekend dinner 4:30pm, no wait. Starter with the Kobe takaki( lowest grade kobe was not A1 Prime level, but tasty starter. They didn't have fried oysters on a weekend, but subbed the grilled Scallop and asparagus tempura was very clean and not greasy. The Char Shu Tonkatsu in pork broth was good and filling. Tuna trio nigiri was ok, rather prefer the fatty O toro. Finished with mochi icecream was a decent quick meal to make you feel like you are in an anime! read more

The sound system is awful and distorted, The servers get easily annoyed when you ask questions about the menu if you're not familiar with it. There was 10 of us and the gal was very unfriendly made our party stand at the door for 10 minutes even though there was two tables that would accommodate us right next to each other. She kept saying give me a minute give me a minute so we finally just sat down we have elderly with us and two children so we finally said it the tables her attitude was so nonchalant and never smiled once. I did leave a tip I just got back from Sydney Australia where they don't tip just to come to here where everybody expects a large tip for nothing. The food was great the company was great we just had a funeral for my father and then to come to this unfriendly waitress who is probably part owner. I really wanted to go elsewhere but it's kind of hard to move 10 people. If you can't smile and you can't be friendly with people that are spending hundreds of dollars in your establishment you really need to get another job. Maybe dishwasher. We've been coming here for many many years in this by far was one of the worst experiences. I'm sorry to write this review. I don't think the rolls are worth the price since all of them shrank. The price went up but rolls got smaller. I know times are tough but paying $16-18 for a roll that's the size of a small 4 inch churro is not worth it. I remember when they opened and it was my go to sushi restaurant in my area. This is a nice restaurant with good food. I had the Chirashi don and got quite a few pieces of fish. In my picture, some of it is under the shrimp. The fish was flavorful and fresh. The pieces were tender. I also had a side of shrimp tempura. You get four pieces for $ 7.95. The batter was light and it was served nice and hot. Service is prompt.
