Friday nights tend to be busy here! The service is good but a bit rushed to accommodate all customers. The food tasted fresh and delicious. A couple items like the karage appetizer came later after we almost finished our main dishes. The salmon/ikura don was great but serving size was small. Had to get a roll to fill me up. Otherwise, opt for the chirashi don which is more filling. The X roll was good but raw hamachi is just not my cup of tea, so I'll skip next time. Ambiance was nice and a little quirky with lit up fish decor hanging from the ceiling. But overall, seemed like a nice, clean restaurant with servers who care about your experience. Finally some good sushi in Pacifica! I was beyond excited to hear that Pacifica was getting a new sushi place and I've been sushi deprived for a month now so I couldn't wait to visit Rockaway. My party of 2 was greeted warmly and seated quickly. The service was great. It was 2 servers and they were so sweet and made sure to check on us, all while handling a full house! Everything we ordered was so delicious and came out a good time too. Rockaway definitely satisfied all my sushi cravings. All the apps were just perfect. You can't go wrong with some garlic edamame that literally fills the entire room with its garlic aroma and the crispy karaage with a yummy spicy mayo to dip into, as well as a perfect portion of tasty beef short ribs. All for starters might I add! The oysters were fresh and deliciously dressed up, served with some ponzu and tobiko with green onions. I have never had a Tako sunomono before but it combines the two things I enjoy so it was definitely a no brainer to get it. Refreshing and delicious! Then came the star of the show. As soon as the server set down that tray of sashimi I knew I was in for a treat!! I mean just look at it. Look how beautiful and colorful it is too. Oh and it comes with a mini uni rice don? It's like how did they know uni was my favorite? So generous too with the portions. And the quality is just amazing. I couldn't even finish everything but I wasn't going to give up and waste the food so we definitely spent hours there until everything was just about finished. That being said; the ambience was excellent. Comfy, cozy and with warm lighting. Plenty of seats, even a sushi bar, too! Love what they did with the place also decorate really nicely with cool dolphin lights and a beautiful fountain decor right at the entrance. Pacifica needs more good food and I'm so happy that Rockaway Japanese Cuisine is here to stay! I can't wait to visit again soon! read more

Was driving with my family and we spotted this place from Highway 1. We were hungry and decided to stop here for dinner. The restaurant itself has a very nice ambiance. Clean and well maintained. We were greeted and sat at a table immediately. It took us a while to decide on what to order since everything sounded good. I ordered the udon with tempura on the side, we ordered another plate of shrimp tempura, a beef teriyaki entree, and a chicken teriyaki entree. The food took some time to come out because the restaurant was filling up FAST. We received our order and everything was to our liking. The tempura was hot, fresh, and crunchy. The entrees were fantastic. They were served with a bowl of hot miso soup and a fresh, mixed green salad. All of the food was delicious and we left with full stomachs and empty plates behind. Proud to report this place has the same menu as the old Japanese restaurant and maybe some added things! Undoubtably the name is easier to say. Service was exceptional, we were seated quickly and food came out fast. Everything tasted perfectly cooked, was fresh and made with care. After a whirlwind trip to LA where all I ate was fast and deep fried food, I got to have a fantastic Japanese dinner at Rockaway. We started with the mixed tempura plate, which was then perfect appetizer. I ordered the sashimi salad, which had the freshest mix of fish on top of dressed greens. I ordered the small hot sake, which the waitstaff upgraded to a large, so we could share it during the cold evening. The restaurant was busy but not crowded and not noisy. We were in the area and were lucky they were still open. What a great little place! The wait staff was friendly and efficient and brought the food out as Ison as it was ready. The rolls were amazingly flavorful and the meats were tender. While we were there, it was someone's birthday and we all sang Happy Birthday! It was such a cool experience. We will definitely be back. Last night we ordered delivery for the first time. Of the three rolls we ordered, two were supposed to be seared, and two were supposed to have "snow crab" (one was supposed to have both). The seared rolls were not seared, and all the snow crab turned out to be imitation crab meat. So that was disappointing. What was also disappointing was that the rolls did not taste very good. Despite the different ingredients, all three tasted remarkably similar, in that they tasted like dense, sushi rice blocks, with less flavor and non-rice ingredients than your typical Safeway roll. On each roll they'd used the least amount of fish I've ever seen on sushi--paper thin slices of salmon, barely there smudges of eel--balanced by large amounts of cheap filler like imitation crab meat and panko crumbs. It's unclear if Rockaway Japanese is a rebranded version the same Japanese spot that's been in this location for the past 9 years, the old restaurant under new ownership, or a new restaurant entirely. The old restaurant was always a solid spot, so we'll probably give the new place a try in person before we write them off completely. read more

If you are open to tasty sushi and fresh fish I woukd sit at the bar and letting Hughes surprise you. The omakase is absolutely incredible! We have always had a great experience here. I suggest going before 6 without a reservation, or calling ahead and asking them to hold a table for you if you want to dine later. read more

I wanted to like this place since Pacifica barely has any Japanese restaurants, but honestly, it feels like they're still trying to figure everything out. The food and service both took forever. Our server was nice, but it didn't really make up for the rest. The food was pretty average and definitely not authentic Japanese food. The ramen tasted like upgraded Top Ramen, and while the curry flavor was decent, the portions were skimpy across basically every dish. Everything felt overpriced for the quality and amount of food you get. I'll give them credit for bringing a Japanese spot to Pacifica, but not for anything else. read more

We came here on their grand opening day. We ordered a lot off their menu. Their rolls, apps, sushi, sashimi, udon, curry and lots of beer and sake. The food was awesome! Everything was cooked perfectly and presented well. The fish was fresh and clean. Exactly want you want for your sushi. The rolls and curry were our favorites. All the servers, cooks and sushi chefs were working hard. We were well attended to. Love the koi fish accents on the wall too! The only downside was we did have to wait a bit but most likely because we had such a large party. We will be back again and again. Always happy to support small businesses! read more

Several weeks ago, soon after opening was my first time ordering 2 rolls to go: I thought they were good & because I work nearby I was excited to be able to walk to get sushi. Returned this past week: ordered a roll without rice & poke. I thought the roll was skimpy but tasted good. The poke was not fresh enough, definitely did not have that fresh raw zing. Disappointed. Finally writing this long overdue review after my third visit to this wonderful establishment. Let me start with the staff because despite being incredibly busy they have made time to be personable and make recommendations and check in, refill water and ask how everything is. And so far everything I've had here has been top notch. The firecracker roll is one of the best ive had, the nigiri was fresh and flavorful. And my personal favorite so far was the chicken katsu curry, which I ate before I remembered to take a picture sadly. So far you can't go wrong with a single item on the menu. On my first visit we had a 2 year old with us and the staff was so patient and attentive in interacting with him and Derek even went out of his way to say hi and wave, we felt so comfortable. The whole space is very inviting and also well decorated. On my first visit here I was so happy to see a line out the door because this place absolutely deserves the attention it's getting. 5 stars I'm a lifelong fan read more
