Nothing short of amazing! Listen I called George the day before to get the scoop on the Cobra Fish n Dive. I have been looking for one up and down Socal trying to locate one asap. What I did was I called Cobra Kayaks and they instantly redirected me to George at UP Sports in Oceanside! Once I called him I thought he was gonna be like other owner operators and not take me seriously. I noticed a lot of the kayak dealers seem to look down on the novice yakkers and are not willing to help them learn and give them all the info they need, but see George was different because although he has a plethora of experience and years of the trade under his belt he was happy to get me into exactly what I needed! He showed that he cared. I told him exactly what I was looking for and he did not try to sell me something different. It was like he took me under his wing and treated me like his own son! For a big guy I've been really embarrassed to shop for kayaks cuz I don't fit in most, but this Cobra Fish n Dive handles me perfect and gives me a stable ride. George also understood that I was very big at 6'2 and over 300 lbs. He guided me in the right direction. Gave me a great deal on a big man's fisherman seat for the yak and I can't be any happier. See I've already taken this kayak out for a test spin with all my gear. The 2XL kayak vest fit good enough to use right away although I still need to drop some weight, but now that I can kayak I will lose it. Bottom line, George had the patience to go over everything with me the day before. All the gear that came with the kayak as part of the package deal and even checked to make sure he had all the other stuff I was gonna need like the vest and kayak cart and what not. He told me he was gonna take good care of me and I drove 160 miles and dog gonit I got that service! I am utterly pleased with the whole experience. I feel like I have a second dad in George! After being in the market for a year for Race/Touring Stand Up Paddle Board, and accepting the fact that I was going to have to spend $1100-$1600 for a good used board, I stopped by UP Sports to see what they had. I too was looking for a standard surf SUP, but the price had to be right to buy both in a single day. Immediately George, the owner, asked me what I was looking for and he went right into the quality of his products plus his rock bottom prices. It took me a while to see if this guy was bullshitting me...however I stuck around for an hour because I was intrigued. He shared with me his business model, where his boards are manufactured, how they are manufactured, the differences between his board and other brands such as Bark, Starboard, Kings, and even Jimmy Styks. When I asked him who he respected in the SUP world, he said Starboard - everyone else is an overpriced brand. Knowing what I know about SUP, I knew I couldn't go wrong. Here is what happened: George set me up with 2 boards - a race SUP and a sick standard SUP, 2 carbon paddles (usually $300 ea), deck pads and even soft racks for a price that is equivalent to what I was expecting to spend on a single race SUP board (yes, without the paddles, deck pads). Get down to this shop before you make your SUP decision. You WILL NOT find better prices on even with used boards on Craigslist. And most importantly, the product is quality. read more

I bought 3 stand up paddle boards from them. In my opinion their prices for the quality can not be matched. I got the 12/6 bord race board. i found it to be faster than many of the more expensive race boards. I have a 70 pound dog and he goes on it with me. The owner George is a long time designer of hang gliders and wind surfers. I found he applied his airfoil knowledge to a new surf SUP. I bought an 11/6 as i wanted the control and long glide for the waves I surf. This board went way beyond my expectations! the concave design makes it plain effortlessly. next I wanted a stable touring board so i could paddle long distance with my dog. George came out with another board based on the surf design but built for cruising. It is a 12 foot bruSurf. Once again it exceeded my expectations. I had demo'ed many far more expensive cruising boards and none match the ease and stability of this board! the dog can move his 70 pound mass around freely and we don't even begin to tip. have been a Pilot, Sailor, and surfer for over 40 years. A couple of years I purchased two standup boards,paddles,bags and a rack for my car and the owner was awesome .I just purchased a new car and I wasn't sure if my rack would fit on top of it. George the owner told me to come on in. When I got there he came out to my car put both of my racks on for me knowing I wasn't there to make a purchase . When I got the boards a couple of years ago he was nothing but helpful in finding the right boards from my wife and I. He put together a great package deal for us. I will be buying a new board from George at Up sports as soon as I sell my old one which I outgrew. I have to laugh at some of the reviews I read one of them which stands out in which a guy had $500 and wanted George to Sell him $900 kayak. He couldn't do it so the guy puts a negative comment and blasts George and his business. Obviously this guy has no idea what it's like to be a small business owner. It's probably the same guy who goes into the grocery store picks out $100 worth of food takes it up to the register and tells the cashier he's only got $50. Give me a break!!! This is my first review for yelp ever. I got so inspired after going to Up Sports in Oceanside. The owner, George, is an absolute old school gem. He cares, he is massively knowledgable, he wants to give you what you need, he asks the right questions, and he genuinely loves serving customers in a good way. I looked all over San Diego for a stand-up paddle board. I'm an intermediate level paddler, and knew enough to know when I was being offered poor quality boards at other outlets - both online and elsewhere. It was such a disappointment to keep getting contradictory advice from various vendors. By the way, stay far away from discount priced paddle boards. George was clear, thoughtful, and really explained the details of what a quality product is, what to look for, and what to avoid. The boards he carries are excellent. I have used some of the cheapest and some of the most expensive boards out there, and I would recommend his boards most highly in terms of price, performance and quality. The key is to get the right size for your needs and ability level. Bottom line - George is as sincere and knowledgable as they come for water sports. read more

Drove by the shop yesterday morning after breakfast and with the intent to see what type of paddleboards they carried. Met George and just started talking about needs and expectations in casual conversation. George shared his background and thoughts around paddleboard design and construction that really hit home. We had a wonderful time talking and hearing about his thoughts on the various boards he carried from his design to that of other shapers he likes and stocks. We were not planning on purchasing a board at this time but couldn't resist taking one of his designs home with us. It is a beautiful 11'6" red paddleboard that will be in the water as soon as this freezing weather pattern clears out of here. If the board rides half as good as it looks, we are going to be very happy campers. George is a terrific guy and loves what he does. My husband and I went here today just to check out what they have for StandUp Paddling. My husband has found a new love for the sport and wished to price their boards. I am more into kayaking myself so I was pleased to see that they had some for me to look over. The man who helped us, George, was very enthusiastic and helpful! He also had some fun stories about his life to share so he showed that he knew EXACTLY what he was talking about when he talked to us about the quality of his product compared to other products, especially the things that my husband had found on Craigslist. Talked to George a year and a half ago and rented some paddleboards for some friends. Great quality, service, and great price. Not your typical beater boards compared to any other place. He offered to sell me one for an amazing price and I couldn't do it. AMAZINGLY, I came back yesterday and he remembered me but no longer had the rentals available to sell. Long story short, he ended up selling me a brand new surf/paddleboard worth @$1200 for almost the price he offered used rental board to me 1 1/2 years ago. Threw in a mid level paddle too!! Surfed it today and LOVE IT! Would give him a 6 star rating if I could. Guy loves the sport and showed a lot of aloha to my friends and I. If you are just starting out in paddle boarding I recommend you go see Up Sports. The price for a rental I don't think you can beat, the price for the day $35.00. The other shops I checked were hourly. Ok when it come to choosing what to ride he makes it real simple what is you level ability and where are you going. Just take his advise and have a great time. You can ride what ever you want, but if your just starting out take his advice it's paddle boarding not surfing. If your looking to buy he has some great advice and he will set you up with the right board, it may not be want you want to hear but it is the right gear. So grab a board and enjoy the ride. read more

Had a great experience at UP Sports. Was looking for a super light SUP and George set me up with the perfect board. It's light and looks super cool and goes so fast, I can keep up with my husband now. George set this board aside for me after he got a shipment of a new style board. He stayed in constant communication with us over phone and email and we ran down and grabbed one the day after they arrived. He even threw in a bag and cover for my paddle. Great guy and glad to give him my business. Might be back down for a similar board for my husband by the end of the year. read more

Curt The owner George listened to my story about needing some more time with my stand up due to old age 61, long legs and few other points. he recommended a fish 7' 6" showed me a few and one was this 7' 6" canary yellow fish with sweet rails and rocked round nose I went for this one took it out in some real crap it nosed through the break and spoke to me " hang on old timer I'll do the rest George gave great pointers and a very competitive price. This store by far exceeds all expectations and the service is great! George is fantastic always positive and helpful. Read all the reviews especially the filtered ones as will. I had to write a review for one reason only, and that's the jerks who wrote a bad review who never been in the store before who called in for a price for car racks. You bottom fishers who use yelp to get a better price need to go back under the rock you came from. As for Yelp you guys who filter the reviews do more harm then good. read more

I stopped in to look around and I was surprised they had spearfishing gear. I've always wanted to try it so I bought everything I needed and got some advice as to where I could go. The guy did warn me that the conditions were not ideal for spearfishing at the moment but I wanted to go anyway. He even showed me where to get a fishing license, 2 doors down. The guy was right, the surf was high and the water was dirty. I can't wait until the water clears up. read more

Wow!!! George has earned my bussiness forever. I bought two kayaks for Christmas. The wife and I took them out for a spin in the harbour a couple days after Christmas. One of the kayaks was listing/ heeling while the wife was paddling. We switched and I capsized quickly. We brought them back to the store to see if we were doing anything wrong. I ordered some Thule racks from George for my Nissan. When I came in to have them installed, he asked me what I planned to use them for. When he found out that they were for surfboards, he offered the wider racks than I had ordered. He installed the wider racks in no time, at no extra cost. I've never been inspired to review a business before but will take time for this one. I bought my first SUP in January and just love it. The price was right and George set me up with the board that is awsome for me. He didn't try to steer me toward a more expensive board and I appreciate that.This thing is a beast at 10.6 ft and is great in the harbor, surf or the open ocean. Have been to Up Sports a few times the last couple years, have nothing but positive things to say. The owner is extremely friendly and helpful. We rented paddle boards; they were at a very reasonable price. He let us rent them for multiple hours cheaper than other shops offered for 1 hour. Great prices, great guy, great experience!
