I recently wrote a review, on 1/25/17 about a horrible experience I had at UP SPORTS and George. Within a day, the new owner, Eric, contacted me by email wanting to discuss the situation and make amends; apparently the business was in transition while I was purchasing the boards, ect. I spoke with him by phone, and he was very sympathetic, and said all the right things. He expressed his willingness to take care of the boards for me and even offered to pay my insurance deductible; all of this despite it not being his responsibility or issue as it came from the past owner. I dropped the boards off for repair yesterday, and he wrote me a deductible check immediately. I thanked him and let him know that I not only appreciate his taking the time to talk to me about the matter, listen to me and look at the defective strap, but I really appreciated his fixing the boards and the check. He essentially said it was a no-brainer, and should never have been questioned. THANK YOU ERIC! You have restored my faith in humanity and make me proud to support small businesses!! I wanted to check in sooner with Erick (new ownership) at Upsports. A few months ago my custom board was stolen down at the harbor. I looked everywhere for my board. I stopped into the surf shop which overlooks the harbor to tell my story and look at the their selection of stand up paddle boards specific to surfing the quality waves of the harbor. Erick showed me the line of VESL Paddle boards. I followed up with a call to Michael Roberts of VESL. He returned my call right away, and we spoke several times. Speaking with Erick, reviewing the board, and VESL's response made the deal. Erick personally picked up my board from Huntington Beach or thereabouts. Erick gave me an incredible deal on the board, leash, and bag. I was set to go. One more change was coming.... I wound up in cardiac care. Two months later, twenty pounds lighter, I surfed for the first time. Offshore harbor day, new board, and my wife on the beach. So blessed with my wife, health, and ocean. Eric is a great manager and knows how to work a shop and i love and promise to contently come to this shop and no other. i drive from deep riverside and only go when lucky due to the fact i have a daughter with medical needs that require me 24/7 with her g tube and her feeds and venting im not really ever out.... Hermite crabs but the first time in years i went to surf and now i know these boards are good and reliable and at dirt cheap day time prices! love this shop im going to come back in to get that board very very very soon! OH and i was out side the shop at 8 when they open at 9 and they took care of me anger free and absolutely respect this shop to the core (corp) lol they are amazing people at this shop dont you dare pass it up! read more

When was the last time you repaired anything for $10....including parts AND labor? George took time on a busy Sunday to repair my Yak for me. He made clear he does run a repair shop, but could clearly see I was at a loss how to do it myself. He had the parts, and the good manners to take care of the repair for me. Thanks George! This is a really nice Water Sports/Surf Shop that is close to Oceanside Harbor and Pier. The shop has everything as you can see on the the site upsports.com . I was visiting from New Jersey and the airline would not take my stand up paddle board. This shop has their own brand "UP" The boards are really nice. I rented one and the design worked great. The day I used it the waves were really big and choppy out. The board was very stable and I had a lot of good rides. I eventually went over the falls on an overhead wave and landed on the fin. By doing so I damaged the fin box. The owner at the shop did not charge me for the damage. I highly recommend this shop if you are in the Oceanside area. read more

George has always treated me well. I can see how folks say he's a little pushy and a little blunt but at the end of the day I walk out with what I came in for and feel good about the prices. His SUPs (The UP brand) are high quality production boards that compare to the quality of any of the name brands. My best experience was when he helped me install my Thule racks. Im a pretty mechanical guy but it would have taken me over an hour (or more) to get these things installed by myself. He did it in about 15 minutes. read more

We bought our cobra tandem kayak from the owner, George at up sports, I had three pages of prices and reviews and comparisons. He gave us a package with all the best stuff!!! his seats (he designed) are by far the best made! We have the lifetime warenty (cant get that on craigs list) the used prices were not really a good deal for something 5 to 6 years old and we got exactly what we wanted! So a month ago I was told about this store from a friend of mine. I needed a wetsuit to start free diving in Cali water... went to the store and met George. Had a O'Neil wetsuit for a price. Now i needed a board. George was extremely helpful and got me fitted for my first ever longboard!!! Just picked up a couple of 10'6" Brusurf paddle boards with all the fixins' (Bags, leash, rack pads, tie downs, and carbon fiber paddle) for 1.9K. George saved us from buying a rack system we didn't need. All in all a good deal at fair price and pleasant experience. I like George. Some may not. If not, go somewhere else. Went in to check out the prices on a rash guard for my daughter and possibly a wetsuit. Asked the owner if he had more rash guards other than the ones up front and he ignored me and walked away. Upon looking around, I found more rash guards towards the back of the store but not in the size that my daughter was looking for so I asked if they had more in storage. He told me "no." I highly doubt that as this shop specializes in carrying this stuff year around. After a bit, we "settled" on a higher priced rash guard than we planned on buying and proceeded to check out. Upon asking what the prices of the different waxes was for our surf board, the owner proceeded to ask me "you know what sex wax is for right?" Of which I half laughed (I really wasn't humored by the way he said it). And then he commented further by saying "you 're not going to cheap out on me now are you?" What the heck? That ticked me off a bit and if I weren't on my way to meet up with some friends at the beach, I would have left my stuff on the counter and took my business elsewhere. It's been a few years since I have shopped at this store and after this experience, I will be taking my business elsewhere. You just don't talk to customers like that. I had a great experience at this store and found everything I needed for my kayak. I found the staff to be very helpful and the store had a large selection of products to check out. I went in for roof rack straps and ended up picking the wrong size on my own. The owner asked the right questions at check out and guided me towards the right selection, I longer set of straps that have made loading my kayak much easier. Avoid. Avoid. Avoid. How does a place like this stay in business when they verbally abuse their customers in such a vulgar manner? My husband purchased a paddle board from here a few months ago. It has been used twice by my husband and a few times by my 14 year old son. The board had some nicks on it and the paint started to blister on the side so my husband brought it in to him. The owner got extremely defensive about nicks on the board and said it was "clearly misuse from hitting the board with the paddle" which my husband accepted. Then my husband asked him about the paint blistering and explained he bought it because George told him how his boards were "the best" and "much more durable than anything else out there." My husband then said "What are you willing to do about the paint?" George writes down a number for a repair shop and shoves it at my husband and says "What do you think we are? An automobile repair shop? You expect someone to blend your paint for you?" My husband reminded him how he promised his boards to be so durable. This is George lost it. The owner immediately started SWEARING and SCREAMING (literally yelling in his face) at my husband telling him telling him his boards were the best and how dare he bad mouth his product. My husband asked him to stop swearing in front of our 14 year old son, which he did not. My husband picked up his board and told my son to follow him and they left the store. The owner, George, FOLLOWED HIM OUT OF THE STORE still screaming at him. Now he is yelling things like "I don't want your business. I know you are going to bad mouth my product online." (uh....ya think??) He literally went whacko. George, you are a lucky man that mama bear wasn't there to protect her son's virgin ears from a lunatic "adult". It is one thing to display your lack of couth in front of an impressionable 14 year old boy. It's another to continue it when his father asks you to stop. Here's another business tip for you. That 14 year old boy is a jr lifeguard at the beach DIRECTLY BEHIND YOU. The entire time you were screaming at my husband to not post a bad review? You should have been politely asking my son not to tell anyone about his experience with you. I now feel it is his duty, as well as mine, to let all of his friends and his friends parents know. Oh, and the tourists that are about to infiltrate our town (bonus for you!!! We are local!!), when they ask him where to get his SUP, he will be sure to tell them where to NOT go. read more

The owner is the rudest man I have ever encountered. My husband was parking his truck in front of the store with his tire barely on the line and the owner immediately comes out screaming at us and calling my husband all sorts of names and saying he was gonna call his command and what not. All we wanted to do was look at paddle boards and get a haircut.. We will never be returning and I certainly would never recommend up sports to anyone. read more

I originally went into this store to check out the kayaks. I came back a few weeks later on a Sunday to pick one up. I spoke to the owner who offered me $100 off and offered to throw in the seat and a paddle and a scotty mount. At the time they didn't have any kayaks available but they were supposed to get them in the following Tuesday. So I pre-purchased one and was told that at any point if I don't like it or have any issues, that I can bring it back no problem. He told me to come back Tuesday to pick it up. I explained to the owner that I got off work around 4 and would be in by 4:30 to pick it up and the owner said that was fine they were open until 6. So Tuesday comes around and I get there at 4:15 to pick up the kayak and they were closed. Called on Wednesday and the shipment still wasn't in. Called Thursday and the shipment is finally in. I go in to pick it up. There was only 1 color to pick from which wasn't bad. But then I noticed that the seat, paddle and scotty mount was missing. I told the owner about it missing. So the owner went and got a seat and paddle and then I told him the scotty mount was still missing. The owner says "Oh you noticed that? Well it comes with what you see." I then proceeds to tell him "No, you told me it came with everything." So then the owner went and got the cheapest scotty mount and handed it to me and said "You have to buy your own bolts and mount it yourself". So with this, I was frustrated but liked the kayak and continued on. I have only used this 2 times and it is extremely unstable and the dry wells leak. It has only been 2 weeks since I have received it. I called today to take it back and the owner denied ever saying that I could bring it back. So now I am stuck with this kayak all because the owner is an ass and doesn't stick to his word. DO NOT GO TO THIS PLACE. IT IS SHADY AND STEALS MONEY FROM YOU. DO NOT DEAL WITH A MAN WHO SAYS HE IS THE OWNER AND HIS NAME IS "WILL CALL". read more

We were down in Vista, CA for the past week visiting with some friends and family, and really wanted to paddle board while we were there. We were with a large group of people, so we needed about three boards - most of the places for the harbor were extremely expensive (compared to Utah, where it is reasonable to paddle board). We found this one, and gave George a call. It was 35$ for the day per board, let me repeat that, for THE DAY - lower rate because it was later in the afternoon (about 12PM). That is how much I pay for two hours in Utah..... uhmm thank you!! The boards were really great and a really nice quality compared to some of the other rentals, you can tell he cares about water sports just by the quality of the equipment. I also checked out the prices on the paddle boards, and for the type of boards they were very inexpensive compared to some I have checked out online and in Utah. We also spent a minute to talk to George about life, shared our bag of BBQ chips and a capri sun during our chat - he is straight forward and definitely is a unique character. He really has a passion for hang gliding, and will share stories that will make you laugh. I will definitely be coming back when I need to rent anything for the water! read more

Today was my second time back and it will be my "Go To" place for all my water sports stuff from now on. Did I mention prices? I use to think going to a big chain store would save me money.. I am a local kayaker who went in to buy some equipment for my kayak (a seat and a paddle leash), but also inquired as to whether they had any used kayaks for sale, or knew of anyone selling a used kayak for around $300-$400. I already own a Wilderness Tarpon 14', but wanted to pick up a used kayak for when friends and family visit. While I understand the salesman (owner?) wanting to sell new kayaks, it wasn't necessary for him to be so rude. He told me I could "go buy myself a leaky kayak off of Craig's List from someone who doesn't care if I drown or not." Well, I've both bought and sold from Craig's List and met many wonderful people doing so. I've yet to have a bad experience. He didn't need to bad-mouth Craig's List and try to make me look like an idiot for shopping for a used kayak in that price range. He could have just said, "No, I don't have anything and don't know anyone who does." He then proceeded to try to sell me a $700 kayak and mentioned financing it. What??? Did you not hear me? I have $300-$400 to spend, don't try to get me to borrow beyond my means. Beyond the terrible customer service (did I mention that he waited on the male customers before me, but ignored me after he had helped them? Yeah...I had to ask for assistance. I don't know, do women not kayak????), the store has little to offer in terms of kayak seats, paddles, or other equipment. A better bet is OEX Oceanside down at Coast Hwy and 78, or better yet, make the drive down to OEX Mission Bay. Those guys are great, lots of kayak and kayak fishing equipment and they'll even do your rudder install, etc. for free. Super nice folks. read more

Well, I've read some of the other reviews on here, and it seems "George" is a hit and miss kind of guy! I'm not even sure if the guy I dealt with was "George" he couldn't be bothered to help me in his completely empty store, well except the guy cleaning the floors for him, he had time to come over and give him orders while I was standing there. Anyway, I just bought a SUP and I needed to find some grip pads for it as well as some roof rack pads and possibly some tie downs (You lost out bro!!) I walked in and the guy working (George?) walked past me as I walked in and asked me what I was looking for? I asked if he carried any grip pads, he said "Yes, over there"! as he walks on by to go do whatever it was that was more important than a paying customer! Hmmm, ok "over there?" I guess I'll just wander around the shop until I find "Over there!" no problem, I'm a pretty easy going person, I don't need a even a pointing finger or anything! So I finally come across some grip pads, they are obviously for a surf board, not a SUP, I mean Im not Kelly Slater or anything, but come on, I can tell a Volkswagen bus from a semi truck!! point being, it was obvious to anyone! So, giving this guy the benefit of the doubt, I ask "aren't these for surfboards?" his response "Yeah, but they can be used on paddle boards, just don't move back as far on the board!" WTF??? Really?? Super helpful??? Not on this day! I guess Sundays are a bad day! I don't mind not being helped, I'll figure it out, I don't even mind if your a little bit of an A-Hole, but dont treat me like an idiot, tell me a bag of rocks are a bag of diamonds!! That store has been there since I was a kid growing up, not sure how its lasted if this guys at the helm! I'll certainly tell all my friends about where NOT to go to get their gear! read more

I have purchased here before and am happy with the customer service. I have always purchased with cash in my hand, and have had no issues negotiating a fair price for both myself and the business. I have purchased 2 kayaks and have never paid the advertised price because I negotiated with cash in my hand. I never found George to be anything other than a businessman who is willing to work with you on his margins if you have the means to back up your words, i.e., cash. read more

George at Up Sports is "The Man." Went to a rental place at Oceanside harbor. Guy decided not to open - at least before noon. Had seen the Up Sports business on the way in and decided to give it a try. Best move we made. Rented two SUPs. Though we're basically beginners, the boards seemed very high end compared to what we'd rented before. George even provided soft racks free of charge so we could transport the boards.
