Navajo scared ground. Hence our mandatory guide Rick who was so knowledgeable, warm, engaging and fun. This in my humble opinion is and has become the top, must visit and see destination in Arizona. Let me try and explain why it surpasses the Grand Canyon. These gorgeous canyons were naturally carved over thousands of years by the combined forces of the eroding water via flash floods and the strong winds interacting with the sandstone. Hence behold these spectacular smooth natural flowing, swirling and narrow rock formations as our stellar guide and the others educated us via words, music and lyrics. The 70 minute tour in the afternoon( & earlier one around 10 am) is timed perfectly to coincide with the proper angles and intensity of the sun's rays as we made our way down to this wonderland. It was a lovely and breezy 80 degrees and maybe 70 ish when we got to the bottom. Please wear comfy sneakers. This beauty is in Page, Arizona just 271 miles north of Phoenix. After spending the night in Canyon De Chelly we decided to stop here on our way to Page, Arizona and the of May was a great time to tour these Red Sandstone walls carved by water that in time ended up shaping these incredible and picturesque formations in Navajo Nation. Our tour guide was a Navajo older and very friendly lady that did an excellent job, she not only gave a good explanation on the history of the Canyon and took some great pictures of us but also gave me a lecture on photography. It was a 10 minute ride from the place where you buy the tickets to where you meet your guide and from there the whole adventure is under a mile at an elevation of about 4K feet. Natural wonder not to be missed when in the area. Tickets were 55 per person and the whole tour took about 90 minutes. Definitely worth visiting, but your experience will vary based on a number of factors: -Time of year- Apparently there is a good and bad time to go. When it's good, you get the crazy awesome light you see in every photo. When it's bad, that's much harder to come by and parts are very dark. I believe late spring/summer/late summer is best. We JUST missed late summer, so we didn't get that crazy light, though we definitely got some good views. -Tour- Our tour (Tse) was fine. Our guide was much more interested in photography and all of our phone settings than the history of the canyon, so I ended up listening to other guides for most of that information. -Price- This also depends on the time of year, I guess. Bottom line, it's definitely not cheap in any season. Definitely worth going, but be aware of the above when you plan your visit. read more

Loose Canyon Slot canyon that's comprised of Navajo Sandstone that makes for some of the most spectacular rock formations on earth. The area is in Navajo Nation, and the only way to visit the canyon in person is to book a tour through one of the approved Navajo-owned and operated tour companies. The Good: *The canyon really is quite spectacular and definitely worth the money (if you can afford it, of course). *Our tour guide (I forget her name) was from Antelope Canyon Tours, and she was really nice and helpful with camera tips. It also turns out she was a San José native at one time! #SmallWorld *The trail (if you can call it that) thru the canyon is very short and flat, so feel free to bring your old, young, and achy--they should all be fine. The Meh: *The ride out there and back is dusty and bumpy and really not that fun. *Pricing is a bit obscene for what it is; at the time of our visit (Oct '19), it was ±$60** (including taxes, fees, etc.) but looking right now the price has jumped almost 45% to a whopping $90/per. *Make sure you make a reservation. Do not show up a few minutes before a tour and assume they'll have room for you. There is a slight off chance someone might no show, but don't count on it. The Ugly: *BE AWARE OF THE TIME TO ARRIVE. This seems simple enough, but you must remember that depending on the time of year and where you're coming from, you could be an hour off one way or another. While the state of AZ doesn't adhere to DST (Daylight Savings Time)--Navajo Nation DOES! But the tours run on ***AZ time*** and ***not*** Navajo Nation time, so you can't really rely on your phone for time. Your head spinning yet?? 0_o The easy fix is to switch your phone off automatic time zone and change your location to Phoenix, and you should be all good. The canyon itself, in all its natural, mysterious phenomena is breathtaking. I could stand for hours and marvel at its beauty, but unfortunately, you're on a tour and time is limited and hurried. You cannot prance into this place willynilly. It is on Navajo land and access is only granted via an official, licensed Navajo guide or touring company. I'll save my thoughts about that for the company review and focus solely on this canyon. Unlike the Lower Canyon, the Upper Canyon required no steps to access it (although there are steps outside when returning to the touring van/jeep). Be sure to follow your guide's tips for getting the best photos. It was cooler in the canyon but not cool enough to need a jacket. The ground can be muddy so wear shoes accordingly. The canyon is really a quick run through. You could probably run through the entire thing in under a minute, but stoping to look up and around in admiration is what we came for, and that takes time. Again, the only downside is that your time is hurried because you're in a group and they're trying to move along because groups are right in front and behind you (they pack them so close together!). read more

The state of Utah need to make some changes soon because coming from a place where they have learned to live with the existence of Covid, it's quite frustrating to find a lot still closed in April 2021. Not only that, Utah is also very dog unfriendly while I have a hypo allergenic little dog. Colorado and Nevada is so different in that. A lot of driving to find places like this closed and if they are open not dog friendly. I think they just want influencers here. read more

They were well organized, be sure to pay attention to the rules of what you can't bring and have your confirmations in hand when you go for your tour and, be careful of the time. A true natural wonder. It is 20-25 mins drive from Page, AZ. And the only way to visit this is by the tour. It is protected by tribes (Navajo) and diff group of Navajo people operates tours. Book your tour in advance. I went there in Feb and it was a bit chilly weather. Drive to spot was covered in snow and our vehicle was kinda slipping. Tour operator said, wear layers cause it gonna be 15 degrees less here. She was right. It was very cold inside the rocks. Upper and Lower Antelope Canyons, just outside Page, Arizona, are the most visited of many narrow slot canyons carved into hard American Southwest sandstone by years of drought/flood cycles. Upper Antelope Canyon is more popular for two reasons. First, its entrance and entire length are at ground level, requiring no climbing. Second, beams or shafts of direct sunlight radiating down from openings at the top of the canyon are much more common in Upper than in Lower. I think Lower Antelope's quieter environment is more conducive to creative photography. But it's Upper Antelope Canyon, with its laser-like beams of sunlight that seem shot from heaven, that draws the crowds--hundreds and hundreds of tourists and photographers each day, jammed tightly into this twisting, narrow 1/8 mile corridor. Due to flowing water, the soft red rock has eroded over millions of years to form narrow and deep canyons. Fall colors at the Canyon in late November Still beautiful with the dark colors coming off the picturesque rock formations, the canyons are beautiful to visit any time of the year. Canyon colors this time of year are purples, oranges, mauves, blacks, and browns. This is a walking tour inside one of two canyons. We were able to tour the Lower Antelope a little over two years ago. THE BASICS: * Book your tour ahead of time because it does fill up. They are open year round. * You cannot enter Antelope Canyon without a native Navajo guide. That is why it is recommended you book a tour. You can do this online. * Arrive as instructed... 1-1/2 hours early to check in -- arrive late and you miss your tour. No refunds. (I witnessed this during our visit. They were offered another open time slot in the day but they had to pay for another entrance fee). If all tour slots are booked that day you're out of luck. * We weren't able to bring anything inside the tour except water bottle and cell phone. Everything else (including purses) stays in the car. There is a concern that backpacks can damage the canyon walls. * No selfie sticks permitted. No video recording allowed. * Your Antelope Canyon Admission includes: a 4x4 Pick-up truck from the ticket exchange point to Upper Antelope Canyon entrance and Navajo tour guide. Bring cash to cover Navajo Nation Permit Fee, $8/Person and the Ticket exchanging service fee, $2/person. They recommend tipping the tour guide $5 per guest. * If visiting during off season, cold months, wear warm clothes. It is cold and windy at the canyon. Watch out for Jack Frost! THE TOUR: The tour was about 60-90 mins long. This is shorter than the Lower Antelope. Lori was our tour guide. She gave us instructions on what the tour entails. There is only one way in and we exit the same way. So as we toured inside we took this opportunity to take our photos as our guide pointed to us some worthy shots of the canyon. You have to kinda use your imagination as we saw formations of canyon "ribs," a feather, a heart, two presidents: Abe Lincoln and George Washington, an eagle... and I can't remember the rest. Lori also gave us photo tips and the best setting to use for our phones to get the best shots. She took photos of us so that hubby and I have shots together (and not just headshots LoL!). Once we reached the end of the canyon (this lead us outside on the other end) we hung out for like 5 minutes before it was time to head back. I have heard from many of my friends about Antelope Canyon and wanna to go there so many time when I'm in Vegas! Finally I have the chance to went to the Upper Antelope Canyon last week. I'm so excited before and after! Antelope Canyon have the upper and the lower two locations. I think I heard they're going to open more sites due to the overwhelming number of people that are visiting Antelope Canyon everyday! I'm at the Upper Antelope Canyon this time! It took little over 4 1/2 hours one way from Las Vegas to Antelope Canyon if no traffics and no stop for restrooms or gasoline. The best sunlights for the best pictures is between 10am to 12pm in April to September. So you now understand how early you will have to hit on the road! My tour started on 5am because we have to make one more stop at Horseshoe Bend before Antelope Canyon. I'm about to die when I hear that! Lol! We're at the Upper Antelope Canyon parking lot at about 11:40am. Changed to the shuttle from the parking lot to the entrance took about 15 minutes on a road without pavement. So we're entering the canyon on noontime. Hundreds of the tourists have already there wait to go inside or just finished the walking tour on the way returning to their shuttle. We been told always keep walking on the right side of the canyon. Some sections are very narrow just wide enough for one person. Every tourist have to follow the local tour guide and each tour is 14 persons. We have to follow our tour guide all the time and she has pointed out the best spots for pictures and teaches everyone the best setting of our iPhones or Android phones. Many fantastical pictures show up in my phone after I finished the tour in the canyon. I'll come back for the Lower Antelope Canyon next time! Two thumbs up! read more

This is amazing trip that I took some time ago and decided to pass on my experience. Among all the canyons trip I took, this one is one of my favorite. Since the canyon is located at Navajo reservation, the only way to get access is to joint the tour. The canyon locate at south of Page, Arizona. The registration and pick up for the tour is at Page. Our reservation was done about 3 months earlier to ensure a spot at noon time beam light tour. This is the best time to visit. Since the canyon is located at the desert, so prepare some sand block to eyes may be helpful. The canyon is a slot canyon and we are the last group before the photography group. As result we have plenty of time to enjoy our tour. Only close to noon time the sun beam rain down straight to the floor of canyon. This marvelous time is spectacular for the light show. Other time slot may not be as beautiful as noon time beam. The color of the slot wall is extremely radian in color. What a contrast when the beam light shine. At the middle of the canyon floor and wall, when you look up, some of the opening shape like the heart. When the sand was thrown against the cascade of wall, it flow like a sand river. A tour must be booked in order to visit the Upper Antelope Canyon. My tour was at 10:30 am. The time of day of the tour really matters because of the sun beams. Due to the nature of the sun beam, the same location will always look different. There are multiple tour groups inside the canyon so it gets crowded. I was surprised it was so packed inside when all the pictures I've seen are so calm and quiet. It now makes sense why all the pictures I've seen are aimed up to crop people out. Upper Antelope Canyon is a photography nature heaven. The canyon is just mesmerizing. Since it's crowded, it's difficult to get a solo shot without another tourist in the background. You must always be with your tour group. Tips: - Set your camera settings on the phone to "chrome". This will bring out the red color. - Wear closed toe shoes. The ground is all sand - Wear a hat if you don't want your hair to get messed up from the sand falling down - Use restrooms in advance. After finding out that I'm part Native American from 23andMe, I've been wanting to learn more about the land. It makes sense now as to why I've always been attracted to the desert and need to go every year or I'd feel empty. It's home to me and knowing this place is in my birth state makes it even more worth it. I saw both Upper and Lower Antelope Canyon and I prefer Upper. It's beautiful and it's shaped more like a lab beaker, big on the bottom and narrow on the top. The colors, the marks, the smell and even the vibe in here is just beautiful. The lights that bounces off these walls are miraculous and we even got to see the light beam that lasted for only 5 minutes. I love this Canyon, maybe even more than the Grand Canyon. read more

AMAZING place! Must see in a lifetime! Slot canyon shaped like antelopes is what this place is known for! Also, Peter Lik took a photo here that sold for 6.5 million dollars which became the most expensive photograph ever sold! Ever since I saw that photo, I wanted to come here. The canyon is absolutely stunning and I've been to many countries and many places in the world and have seen nothing like this! Most tours are 1 hour to 1.5 hours, and the photo tours are 2.5 hours long. It's plenty of time to go through the canyon and take a ton of stunning photos. The canyon is very crowded when we went during the holidays and the canyon is very narrow in certain places so it's hard to squeeze through. Also, in the winter due to the direction of the sun, the canyon gets really dark even around noon time. My only complaint is that in order to get to the canyon, you have to do a tour with one of the 4 tour companies operating out of Page, AZ. The prices range from $30-$40 per person + $8 mandatory permit fee which is extremely expensive, and you really have to book in advance especially during holidays or summer peaks season, or else you will not be able to go as they sell out. This is not a national park but private Navajo land, so no self tours at all. Overall, a must see attraction, but I feel like once is good enough, no need to visit again. read more

This review is for the canyon itself... it's a wonder to see. The walls are smooth with perfect layers of colors. I sort of felt like I was entering a canyon in Mars... the sand is so red! Loved every minute of it, even if my time felt so short. The only way you can get here is through a tour company - they're the only ones permitted to lead folks into the canyon. Sadly, no self-exploration here. It's also cool how the light peaks through from above. The guides will point out certain rock formations where it looks like Abraham Lincoln, a heart, or a flame when the light reflects on it. It's hard to take proper photos, so be quick on adjusting your camera and make good judgement on what photos to take - you don't want to spend too much time trying to take a photo or else you'll miss the rest of the canyon in your short time walking through. Also - DO NOT OPEN SWAP YOUR DSLR CAMERA LENS INSIDE THE CANYON - it's so dusty that you're going to ruin your camera without a proper cleaning. Sadly when I came here, it was in the afternoon so there was no light beam - your best time of seeing it is during the 10:30 am tour. But it was still worth the visit! The canyon itself deserves 5 stars but the tour turned the canyon soulless. The Antelope canyon is owned by Navajo Nation, tour guide (permit) is required. Self tour is NOT an option. I don't mind paying the admission/entrance fee, but.... There are two tour companies and looked like they knew each other. (Monopolized). The one is located at the parking/entrance of the Upper Antelope Cyn I believe called Antelope Canyon Navajo Tour,. This one use jeep to transport tourists. (heard it could be very dusty). The one we booked was Adventurous Antelope Canyon Photo Tour, the hotel staff recommended and booked for us. ($34/each, $8 entry fee included). We went to their gathering point, which is at 302 mark on 89, 2 miles after passing Upper Antelope Cyn. You will see a gate and cars parking on the right side. Not easy to miss. They use SUV with off road tires to transport tourists. (8 people in one car with one tour guide.) The tour started pretty on time. We were lead to walk into the canyon, each tour guide kept each tour separated in a small distance.... and here's the most unbelievable thing... Our tour guide started to ask us to give him the camera/ phone so he could take the photos for us. He took my iphone6 and told me to turn on the "Chrome" filter which I didn't even know exist since I only got my phone for few days before the trip. I was so amazed that he probably knows all new technologies better than us. He showed everyone which angle to take the best photo and each name of the scene like mummy or heart. There was even one he took a pic using my phone then told me it's a million dollar photo featured on National Geography. The canyon was very packed inside and everyone was kept on the path in order not to disturb other group and to be on schedule. There's no way you can walk freely back and forth, the only way is to follow the group and stop at each spot where everyone else also take the photo. We walked out the canyon from the other side exact 5 minute ahead of schedule,. yes they really did a good job to be on top of schedule. So we got to walk around a little bit before we went back to the canyon and back to where the car was parked. (the canyon is same way in and out). I doubt whatever your tour package is (the photo tour require to have tripod, DSLR and some more expensive package let you stay longer in the canyon), everyone's pic will turn out pretty much the same. The tour guides will help you set out your tripod and tell you where to shoot. The formation of this mandatory tour made this place no difference than any other tourist spot. yeah my photos came out good but it has no spirit. Tip 1: wear boots (doesn't need to be hiking boots), it's pretty easy/flat and short (1 mile) I wish i had worn my boots so won't be so much sand in my sneakers. Tip 2: make reservation ahead. Even it was middle Nov, off peak season but still people at the booth but been told tours were sold out. Tip 3: cash only. There's no major bank in town so go get some cash back at Walmart Super center and stock for road trip. Tip 4: on Hwy 89 between Kanab.UT and Page, AZ on Utah part, watch for cops, we got a speeding ticket. (cops on both sides). good news, speeding ticket is cheaper in UT. read more

The only word to describe this place is majestic. I've always seen pictures of this fantasy canyon and finally made it a point to go. Our tour guide was amazing, he took the time to explain the history and formations as well as provide us photo ops of the most popular areas. It gets a bit chilly down in the canyon so I suggest bringing a jacket. It's mostly flat ground inside with the exception of climbing a few ladders here and there (def wear sneakers, I wouldn't recommend flip flops). I would go early morning as well, when it hit noon, there were loads of buses unloading tourists (at that point you're a bit rushed to move along since they dont allow people to stand around). Towards the end they bring you to the top of the canyon and you can see through a small crack at all the people walking below, seemed surreal! read more

So when you have a weekend off, a friend who comes down to visit the desert & three landmarks that are somewhat within close proximity to each other, you hit all the destinations within the weekend-Grand Canyon, Horseshoe Bend & Antelope Canyon. Out of all three of the landmarks we went to, I'm gonna say Antelope Canyon ranks number 1 in natural beauty. Deep in the reservation, you take a guided tour with a group to take a short drive to the entrance of the canyon. The dust storm that day didn't deter anyone from continuously waiting in the middle of the mini haboob. This is a heavily trafficked tourist destination with tours coming in & out but the canyon inside seemed very much untouched. What you see is what you get-no filter needed. You're walking through nature's etched walls with the sun beaming through the canyon-gorgeous. I didn't expect to be so enchanted by the lands of the desert but I had to see Antelope Canyon to get inspired by it. read more

The canyon itself is breathtaking! It's approximately a quarter mile stretch I believe, but every bit is worth the trip. The only problem is that there are tons of people who get squeezed into every tour. So while you are there, it is a constant struggle to find space and not get pushed around. Otherwise you should try your best to get the most out of your time there. If you are a camera enthusiast, then go along with a photography tour. If you are just a regular enthusiast, the regular tours will be fine to get a few nice pictures and to enjoy the scenery. I often find that so many people are wrapped up in their cameras and trying to preserve a memory these days that they fail to enjoy the moment. I think this is especially hard to do at this place because most of the tourists are all set on getting some nice pictures. Beware of high levels of selfie sticks, tripods, and getting in the way of pictures. I recommend getting those pictures, but also putting down the camera for a bit and just looking up and around 360 degrees. The astounding blend of colors will enrich your life. read more

We made reservations months in advance for the Upper Canyon at 12:45, and accidentally showed up an hour early due to the you're-in-daylight-savings-time, you're-not-in-daylight-savings-time switcharoo we did about 5 times that day, despite trying meticulously to figure it out. We were able to hop on a tour earlier, which was beyond perfect for us! There are signs everywhere, recommending proper behavior and attire (no bags, no hats, no tripods...) - I had known all of this previously so it wasn't an issue. I even had the cash ready for the "navajo fee" that was due to the site upon arrival. Once checked in, we were ushered to a crowd, lined up in front of 5 or so converted RVs. Our names were called off and we crowded onto the trucks. The ride was about 15 minutes of pure bumpiness (which was doubly difficult since my legs can't reach the ground to steady me...). We were warned about 10 times about following directions, taking photos only one direction, etc., and we honestly did our best to be respectful of these rules! Inside the canyon, there was a lot of screaming. A lot of yelling. Lots of people being pushed and told to wait. It was a bit of a madhouse. The canyon itself was incredible. I had never seen a slot canyon before, but the light beams were incredible. Because the canyon is somewhat dark inside - the light beams make for incredible pictures. Our "guides" showed us all sorts of shots, (mostly by taking our phones/cameras and doing it for us) but it was with the monotony of a tollbooth collector. I can't imagine how many times a day these guides take groups through, but our guide was definitely not the most enthused about the process. In reality, the canyon itself was breathtaking and completely unlike anything I've ever seen before - I highly recommend it! I'm knocking off stars for the service. I understand that probably tens of hundreds of people visit daily - they've even got the check-in and ordeal down to a science. However, I felt like cattle, being prodded along - moved like ignorant Americans through a tourist trap. I dislike that so much, I can't even describe it. read more

We took this tour at around 2pm on a Labor Day weekend. A tour truck will take you to the canyons about 3 miles away from the waiting/meeting area. Just like the lower canyons, once you get inside, it's not that hot at all. You can only take photos going. You'll take the same route to go back to where you started. Once your group is on the way back, they won't let you take any more more photos. Tour guys will actually call you out and tell you to keep walking back to the entrance (where your 4X4 truck is waiting). Aside from the great lights that pass through the canyons, I'd say that the upper canyons have more shapes to offer than the lower canyons. From Abraham Lincoln's silhouette to Clinton's nose, to the lion king and the bear, you'll have fun taking lots and lots of snaps!!!! read more

Much too crowded. Darker than Lower Antelope Canyon. Admittedly did have a couple of interesting features, particularly shafts of light that appear when sun is near noon. Quite of bit of tour is taken up as they drive you to the canyon entrance and back. Good tour guide but sometimes hard to hear him since other tour guides in the groups in front of us and behind us were talking at the same time. read more

We were in our 50 States grand tour and we came across this amazing place in July 2014. The most important part of this tour is to find out what time the Sun will bring the best light show in the caverns. We stayed an extra day because we wanted to see the best and we did. We booked for the next day for the right time where pictures are best. The tour guide will show you the best places to get the best pictures. Our tour guide was so awesome to show us and everyone else the best of the best. **When you get to the big bus truck, make sure you don't have loose items!!! Hold your hat, glasses and everything in your possession.** Would it be to much to ask not to litter and if you see someone littering please say something!! Enjoy your trip!! read more

It was beautiful, but if you only have time for one, do the lower canyon. Also, do not buy on Viator...they charged us 150% more than walk ups to the window. The walk was easy and you are driven to the entrance and back to the ticket area at the end. read more

This is the mecca of desert landscape photography opportunities. You cannot come to this area and just poke around you have to actually go through a tour guide company in the town of page. They did this due to the fact that a few years ago whenever you didn't need a tour guide people was starting to deface this amazing natural beauty. I am an absolutely terrible photographer but with the help of my tour guide I was able to take some pretty epic pictures in this place. If you're anywhere near North Arizona this place is worth the couple hours of driving to come check out. One thing to know what these tour guide companies you will definitely need to book this well in advance as I was only able to find one showing of this Canyon at 8:30 in the morning and you really want to come at 11:30 so you can see the spectacular light beams. read more

Our guide ruined the whole tour with her attitude. I got feelings that we are in prison. She started her greeting with a story how she sent back 2 people from a tour. No "hello" no "enjoy your tour" nothing. While other guides were telling stories to their groups our was repeating thousand times we have to follow the rules otherwise she will send the whole group back. My group was shocked and quiet. I've lost any desire to enjoy my tour. I understand we are guests in their house and they have rules we should follow but presenting it in this way I don't get...If you work in hospitality business you can not treat your customers as a piece of nothing. We were driving 6 hours couldn't wait to enjoy beautiful canyon, came with a good mood and instead of it I couldn't wait my tour will be done. read more
