great experience. when I say experience I mean the presence of the Holy Spirit was welcomed and There was a definite presence of God there.

I attended Upper Room for the first time last night for the 5PM Sunday service. I have to say, my greatest take away was the Worship. It was really lovely to see people worshipping The Lord with no boundaries and no care for what others think - just true authentic worship. With that said, there are a few things that set off alarm bells for me. 1 of them being the save seats culture here, we arrived 30 min early and people had ENTIRE rows saved. If I had been a first-time church goer, this would absolutely make me stay away from church. It was SO discouraging to see people saving seats in mass quantities, it came off very cliquey and NOT of The Lord. Church should be like a welcoming place for everyone. Secondly, the way in which tongues are spoken and encouraged felt like a huge red flag. The way tongues were being spoken - did not align with the bible in ANYWAY. I fully believe in the gifts of the spirit, but it felt like the singers were just shouting them out all willy nilly and it didn't feel genuine. It felt like it was being used as a way to draw attention to themselves. When it was time for an alter call, one of the singers encourage everyone to make sounds and speak in tongues to the Lord. This is promoting a very unhealthy practice. Not everyone has this gift and as it states in the bible - if done in public, there should be a translator. Lastly, I realize that the normal pastor was not preaching this day but the man who did preach probably gave the absolute worst sermon Ive ever hear. It was basically him ranting for an hour about how you need to keep your eyes on jesus. And while i greatly appreciated the basis of the message. there was no scripture and he was ALL OVER THE PLACE...telling stories that didnt tie back into the general message. If someone had come to church, hungry for the word of God.. they wouldnt have recieved it and that is a huge problem. Not to mention him saying that Jesus dying on the cross for our sins was not the whole gospel.... I'm sorry what? I truly believe God is moving in this place but I also believe this entire congregation is promoting a feelings-based relationship with God and that is so dangerous. read more

I really wanted to love this church due to the proximity to my house and how open-minded they seemed online. I went to service this past Sunday and there were a couple of moments that just did not sit right with me. The main one being when there was a video of a young white couple who talked about living in an "unsafe" neighborhood and how it was dangerous but they feel protected by God and know it was their purpose to bring change and keep them safe. There was more in that sentiment but what really got me was when the pastor came on the mic and said "I've been to their house and I even said 'Why do you guys live HERE'?" This was followed by how great it is that the church is in the Cedars neighborhood and how much change they are going to bring/implement. This is simply gentrification. What makes their neighborhood so dangerous? Because their neighbors don't look like them? Because it is a predominantly black and brown area? I didn't like the message that it's taking 2 young white people and their faith/church to make the Cedars a better place. I will not be returning. read more

I spent like 6 months here sleeping in there parking lot going to there prayer sets all throughout the week !!!This place has changed my life !!! I got to see what true children of God act like not perfect but true heavenly children of God and I got to see Gods presence transform me here!! This church is special and rare. If you are hoping to meet or draw closer to God, this is the place. God is there. People are free to be themselves no matter what, when they walk in the door. God's love for all of humanity can actually be felt and experienced through the people there. God is there -- and the spirit you can feel in the room + the people in the room -- are the evidence. read more

It isn't the biggest place but it will be soon! They are moving to a bigger building for a bigger audience! People travel from places like Florida and California to come to this place, that is at least from people I have actually met there! There is a line to get in because of its small capacity but man does this small community make you feel welcome. People will break down and open up with a ton of people who care around them. The whole atmosphere is welcoming and the people are always willing to stay for extra worship, prayer time, help, and anything after the service. You can worship however you want! Sing, dance, be loud! Big or small! Be to yourself if you need! I definitely think you should give it a go! read more

The Upper Room is a church in Dallas, as well as other cities whose values include prayer, purpose and people. Their primary activity involves prayer and worship - they have a ton of prayer room hours. You can literally catch a live prayer and worship set every day of the week. It's one of the only churches I've discovered that actually has an evangelist on staff. They say he carries "fire." Pastors all seem down to earth and amazing. The prayer room worship sets in Dallas are about 2 hours long - always amazing. They also stream their prayer sets on the website. read more

I witnessed the pastor irresponsibly traumatize individuals in the congregation by giving a "word from God" that the Holy Spirit wanted to heal childhood trauma. He urged us to recount our traumas and simply "let the holy spirit work". The woman in the row behind me had a mental breakdown and NO ONE came to help her. Many of us were triggered with no support. The audacity of someone to use their position in such a flippant way is horrifying. Spoiler alert: we were not healed from our trauma that day. read more

Walked in for the first time hoping it might be different than every other church that doesn't actually care. But I've never felt more invisible. I got there right at 9:15 like their website said to and still when I walked in every seat was "taken", either by people or by the things they had set down to reserve spots (4-6 at a time) for friends. So I walked around the crowded room alone for 15 minutes looking for a place to sit and finding none. With no place left to sit, I walked back out of the building without anyone acknowledging my existence, and left without anyone caring. What is the point of a "church", if it has no time or attention for new people off the street? What it its actual purpose? Apparently it is a club for its members, like every other church in America is. Never going back, wish I hadn't gone, thanks for ruining my day. read more

GOD IS MOVING IN THIS CHURCH! Let's start with the children's ministry. Whitney, a lady who is a leader in the ministry, was the absolute sweetest, most kind and polite woman! Very helpful in getting our children checked in and ready for church. Now on to worship, if you want to experience Jesus in a new, exciting way, this is your place! Everyone in the room felt the presence of God. Next, the message. OUTSTANDING! The pastor's wife preached tonight, and she did well communicating with the people in the room. Lastly, the atmosphere. Very comfy, modern, warm and welcoming. Everyone is extremely nice! The groups range from young, teenage, hipster kids to your elder, sweet, and adorable grown ups. Although we live in Fort Worth, I believe we have found our church home. By the way, we attended the 5 p.m. service on a Sunday. This is everything I've ever wanted in a church! read more

We love the upper room, visited there in June and the Holy Spirit was really moving since they are free and let him move without typical religious agenda micromanaging. We're hoping to get back there in July and spend several days more soaking in God's presence, worshipping long and free. the church is only as great and effective as it's members... i found the upper room church to be genuinely authentic and "real" to the christian faith. no false pretentiousness... no hypocrisy... and no hyperbolic farce. i have found my church to worship without any fear of judgemental snubbing or competition. come as you are... a sinner in need of the word of god and a congregation to walk the walk and talk the talk. and if you feel the good lord reaching out for you to get up and dance... so be it... you're not considered, disrespectful, insane or self gratifying... it's the power of god in the upper room and the great songs and music expressing the gentle, loving blessing that should be prevalent and acceptable in all churches that worship openly to the one god almighty. i have been truly blessed by god and the true believers that congregate there, for the love of christ and all their brothers and sisters... thank you jesus--- danny witten... the lone rider for god,... enjoying all the gifts god has so lovingly and generously granted us all...
