I relocated from Massachusetts to Charlotte a little over a year ago, and I needed to find a new tattoo artist. I got a bad tattoo in MA back in 2013, and got it touched up before I moved here. However, it was still not complete. I considered getting laser treatment done to remove some blue coloring that was just wrong and interfered with the rest of the piece, but it was just WAY too expensive. So, after doing research of artists in the area, I finally decided Uptown Arts was the place for me. Mike and Scott both have very impressive portfolios similar to the work I had done on me, but I picked Scott because his portfolio had an impressive section dedicated to before and after touch up work. I brought in the artwork from the original piece plus some additional art and consulted with Scott on how he could polish what was there, cover up the blue mistake, and then add a new section to complete the piece. The original picture showed the upper torso of a female with a blue sky backdrop that was supposed to frame the female in a specific way that didn't quite work out. After one session I knew I had picked the right place to go. I now have a large piece that starts ay my ankle bone and goes up the side of my leg almost to the knee. Scott is very skilled at free hand drawing and he was able to add a lower torso that positioned perfectly with the upper torso. Also, his use of colors, and shading is perfect. Lastly, his creativity in taking the original concept I had regarding the infamous blue color and covering it up was just fantastic. The second session with Scott was to just take the upper half and polish it up. He corrected so many mistakes, and his attention to what might seem as minor details was just incredible. He was able to redo the entire face to make it look more like the portrait, and had VERY little real estate to work with. The shop itself is in a great location Uptown in the Latte Arcade, just a couple blocks from the Charlotte Knights stadium. The shop is very clean, and filled with fantastic art, including an entire corkboard with sketches from Mike/Scott that I am sure they would love to tattoo on someone. The hourly rate was VERY reasonable (a bit cheaper than I was paying in MA), and I was not charged for time spent drawing out the tattoo, just the time spent on the actual tattoo. The shop seems to specialize on doing large, creative works such as sleeves, as Mike was working on a huge sleeve project while I was there, and it was looking fantastic. I really cannot recommend the place enough. It has a great location, a great shop layout, great rates and very experienced and friendly artists. If I had to say ONE negative thing about the place, the casual chatter between everyone can get so funny you might have a tough time staying still while they work! There are many ways to describe a tattoo artist, like "great with color and technique" or some other crap that doesn't really actually say anything about what the artist can do. When I think about Mike Drossos, I think of "perceptive" in the sense that he's able to use his keen eye for detail work hand-in-hand with his ability to understand the client's need. I came to Uptown Arts after searching for an artist to do my full-sleeve and I couldn't have chosen anyone else better in Charlotte with the needs that my design required because he was able to allow the design to grow well past my limited scope and to breathe a whole new life into the art. When looking for an artist, THAT is something you should look for; some some punk who wants to alter the design to match their ability, but someone who's ability allows them to match the design to the person. Really, the man's work can speak volumes for itself--well beyond what I can articulate onto paper and therefore is worth looking into. The shop is clean and classily done so that I'm allowed the home-like feel that I wanted. I didn't feel pressured, like the shop was trying to give off a fake "air of coolness" or anything absurd like that (You know what I mean if you've been to more than one shop around Charlotte). I had the pleasure of meeting his other artist, Scott, who watched a lof the design unfold and added to the conversation for the day in a very pleasant way. I was in the shop yesterday for over nine hours and it was tiring for all of us, but never did I feel out of place, like an obligation, or anything less than potentially making some new friends. All-around, I wouldn't dare to dream to give Mike and Uptown Arts less than 5 stars because they deserve 6 for the work, the atmosphere, and over-all amazing quality that they obviously have worked hard to acquire. read more

This is by far the best tattoo shop I've been too and very convenient to uptown Charlotte. Mike was very nice from the beginning. He was able to accommodate us without an appointment (I would still recommend making one as they do get busy) on our recent trip to Charlotte. My wife described what she wanted and he was able to freehand her design with great clarity (he has more sophisticated technology that helps with finalizing after you are happy with the design). He makes sure that you are completely happy with the design before proceeding. He is a very personable guy and we felt relaxed the entire time. I was surprised that his equipment was not louder when applying the tattoo, but he uses more advanced tools that are both quieter and more efficient. He made sure everything was clean and sanitized before we started and I like seeing someone who is very organized and cares about what they do. His prices are very fair and I was happy with our price. One thing I do recommend to people is tipping your tattoo artist. It is a service industry and hard working people like that deserve a little extra when they really take care of you. We ended up needing to stay past his normal operating hours and he had no problem with that at all. He was more concerned with making sure we were happy with the final product and the overall experience. If you are in Charlotte or want a quality tattoo, look no further. read more

I was absolutely terrified to get my first tattoo, but as soon as I walked into Uptown Arts, I immediatly knew I had found the right place for me. There facilities are so nice and as soon as I walked in I felt like I was at home. It was very clean and comfortable. There were plenty of places to sit down and it was roomy. I was extremely nervous but as soon as I met Scott, I was glad he was going to do my tattoo. He made me feel very comfortable and took the time to draw up my own specialized tattoo on the spot. Being a newbie to getting tattoos, I was so glad to go there. Scott knew what he was doing and he had a great sense of humor. I was laughing the whole time and yelling at certain points, but hey! Getting your first tattoo hurts in certain spots! It was a great experience and I am recommending all my friends who want tattoos to go to Uptown Arts. Everything about this visit was great. The shop is small and clean and has a great laid back vibe that I really loved. The whole staff is extremely knowledgeable and skilled. I dealt with Mike and I felt like I was in great hands the whole time. I wasn't exactly sure what font I wanted for my quote and he took a lot of time going through different options and placements with me. My mom came with me and was getting her first tattoo. Mike was super patient with her and totally put her at ease. Both of our tattoos required small precise work and he did an amazing job. We couldn't be happier with how they turned out. As we were leaving he made sure to tell us that he stands by his work and to let him know if we needed touch ups or anything because they'd be on him. Walked in and spoke with Mike about a half sleeve idea.. Within 5 min I knew I had came to the right place.. When other tattoo shops told me my idea wouldn't work Mike simply said we can make that happen no problem let me get you on the schedule! Customer service is so awesome Mike texted me a week before the appointment with a finished sketch to confirm design. Even texted me couple days after first session to ensure everything was healing well! Super clean shop, great tattoos for a great price! Drove up all the way up from Atlanta just to get tattooed here! Absolutely great team and service. I'm not the strongest when it comes to enduring long sessions, but the staff here was incredibly patient with me and let me take as many breaks as I needed. Had a great experience with everyone. Justin Carpenter is an AMAZING artist; his traditional tattoos are spectacular. I recommend him to all of my friends who live in the NC area. He was very informative when it came to the healing process/tattoo care and answered all my questions to the best of his abilities. Needless to say, I will be driving up soon again for more artwork. Atlanta has a lot of great tattoo shops, but it's the service that makes the difference. He has done all of my tattoos and each and every piece is truly unique and an amazing piece of artwork. Scott takes the time to listen to all of your ideas and make them come to life on your skin. Michael Quinn is a true artist and one of Charlotte's finest at his craft - hands down. He was able to take an old tattoo of mine (over 25 years old), correct and then enhance it with a design that my husband drew; all the while making it his own by adding unique features, dimension and elegance. I got my first tattoo with Mike. He did an amazing job!!! I was very nervous. He was very patient with me and waited until I felt more comfortable to get started. We discussed budget beforehand and he wanted to make sure to stay within my budget and also get the tattoo I wanted. We stayed well below my budget and the tattoo looks great!! He sketched up something and wanted honest feedback to ensure I he was matching my vision. He also considered size and placement and gave me input on what he thought would be best. I have nothing but wonderful things to say about this shop, from the minute I walked in to consult with Mike, I felt welcomed because everyone was really friendly and laid back. Mike did an outstanding job on covering up one of my tattoos on my wrist/forearm and went above and beyond to take extra time on it; he is truly an artist that takes pride in his own work. Brian, better known as Bee, is an extremely talented artist and more so has to be one of the most patient individuals I have come across. Stopped by Uptown Arts on a trip to Charlotte on 04/07/2016. (I live in South Carolina.) Was getting my first and only tattoo and the guys there were awesome. Went with a close friend who is mostly covered in tattoos. Shop was clean and organized, and all three of the artist looked like they lived the tattoo lifestyle. Scott was awesome and was very light handed. Obviously I have nothing to compare this to, but the friend I went with said he was the gentlest artist she had ever been to. I'll be going here for touch ups in the future (or the small chance I decide to get any more tattoos. I highly recommend this place to anyone in or around Charlotte! read more

I had the best experience with Mike at Uptown Arts. This was my first tattoo and, before I went in, to say I felt like the most unusual client would be an understatement. (I'm a 45 year old female accountant.) But once I got there, and started talking to Mike, I did not feel out of place or uncomfortable at all. Just the opposite in fact, it was a fantastic experience and I'm going back next month for another! Mike is just an all around straight up great guy. So much fun to talk to but also genuinely caring.
