We have been going to Uptown Blanco since it first opened. I'm sorry to say that they have lost their chef that made it what it was along with their manager. With their limited menu, every dish needs to be the best possible. The pork chop was one of the best with a dipping sauce that complimented it perfectly. The BLt salad was average with a small ramekin of thick honey mustard dressing that was not adequate for the amount of salad. Extra dressing is now an extra charge. Hopefully, with time, they will be able to do better than they did tonight. read more

This restaurant has reopened. The review was difficult to score, server was great, service was great, my friends enjoyed their meal, I had portabella mushroom sandwich. Well, I had a perfect sandwich long ago and every one since then has been judged by that one. This one fell way short. Great big mushroom on toasted bread, leaf lettuce and red onions, I asked for the pesto on the side. My perfect sandwich has melted jack cheese and sautéed onions, so this was a disappointing meal. Dessert will save the day...no...we all ordered something different so we could try all three. Creame Brulee was served cold. I was told after I wanted to send back, Chef informed us through server that was the proper way. Hmmm, I still disagree. Bread pudding was warm and tasty, brownie or chocolate cake left something to be desired. Will I try again...yes...just something different! read more

We made it to this restaurant during the heavy rainstorm and flooding going on the night of May 3. As we laughed walking in, half soaked thinking we would be the only people there, we noticed that there was a good number of people there and still coming in later during crummy weather. Food was excellent for a small town restaurant and similar to a number of big city upscale restaurants. Salads were very fresh and veggies sides were very good. I had the salmon with cream sauce. It needed a few more minutes under their broiler to get it a little more on the well done side as I prefer it. My plate came back looking perfect with the salmon just right. Staff were all friendly and we all took time to talk a little more than usual reflecting on the crazy storm. Will definitely frequent this restaurant. It is a hidden gem that is easy to miss. They need to get some signage up to give it better visibility. read more

What a lovely brunch! It's really easy to mess up Eggs Benedict, but these were perfect! My husband's omelette had an abundance of spinach (this is a GOOD thing - so many restaurants really skimp on this when you ask for it in an omelette!) Fruit was fresh, potatoes were nicely seasoned and had the touch of crispy that feels like a home skillet. Lovely ambience... actually, a little quieter than normal... it took us a minute to realize there was no music! Not sure if this was an oversight, but we also appreciated not having to shout over it, which is much more usual. Very sweet and attentive staff, and a casually elegant atmosphere. A pleasant and delicious surprise! I was staying in Blanco for a few days and had zero expectation of finding anything vegetarian at a restaurant, let alone anything this good. My dinner, wild mushroom ravioli, was very flavorful and filling. My husband's choice of vegetable linguine was ok. The blue cheese vinaigrette on the wedge salad (without bacon) was very good and had us debating the ingredients. Loved the Texas Riesling they serve. We also went there for breakfast and had the migas. Migas aren't really my favorite and these seemed more like a migas inspired omelette, but we both rated them as ok. Service was great both days we ate there- friendly, but not fake. The restaurant is a little fancy and I worried about our traveling attire, but I shouldn't have even given it a thought. Plenty of people came in wearing old t-shirts and shorts, making us look dressed-up. The building has been restored and is beautiful if a little perfect. Very clean and spotless. Went with a group of 6 total--the best part of the meal was the company I had. The service was good and eager to please, though a little slow to start. We were only in Blanco for one night and went at the suggestion of the front desk person at our hotel. The decor was elegant and the ceiling details were very pretty with white table cloths and white napkins on the tables. We had calamari with marinara sauce as an appetizer -- it was delicious! Definitely get it if you go! The "famous brown bread" was very tasty, especially with the soft butter that it is served with. And... that's all of the good details. The main entrees were mediocre and not really worth the high prices. The special for the night was an all-you-can-eat catfish prepared fried, blackened, or lemon-peppered. All five of my dinner peers had this. They each also had a side salad and two sides. My husband chose twice-cooked potatoes and another side that was completely forgettable. The twice cooked potatoes were really good: slightly cheesy, buttery, with bits of bacon. Just plain goodness. The blackened and lemon-pepper preparations of the catfish were misnomers. The blackened catfish was dusted with a tasteless red and slightly peppery-looking seasoning. The lemon-pepper catfish was dusted with a yellow and peppery-looking seasoning. Neither tasted like their namesake. The fried catfish was the best of the three: crispy, very hot, had some flavor to the light breading. Add a dash of lemon and tartar sauce--best entree of the night, but in the grand scheme of eatingness, nothing to write home about. (Yes, eatingness is a word.) I had the petite chicken fried steak with white gravy, green beans, and corn. The best thing on the plate was the side of green beans: crisply al dente with light oil and hints if salt & pepper. The corn was crisp, but nothing memorable. The chicken fried steak was a real let down. It was just bland. The gravy as well. Their famous dessert was the zango, a crazy dessert that starts with cheesecake that's wrapped with a crispy dough, baked, then topped with chocolate and caramel sauce, dusted with cinnamon and then served with ice cream. It was a wild jumble of flavors. Just mayhem on a plate. The best dessert at the table was not on the menu. The chef made it because one of the ladies asked for chocolate: chocolate-dipped strawberries. Another person had creme brûlée which I assume was good since he devoured it. He said the custard was just slightly sweet and perfect with the caramelized sugary top the way brulee should be. read more

My husband and I stopped here for lunch on Saturday while driving through Blanco, and were so impressed! The interior was so beautiful and inviting. The staff was wonderful, and the food was AMAZING! I had the "special" - shrimp alfredo. It was perfect! Usually I have to add seasoning (salt/pepper/cheese) to alfredo sauce, but the sauce was perfect! It was a very generous portion for the price $9, and came with a side. My husband had fish and sweet potato fries, and his meal was excellent as well! I just wish we saved room for dessert because they looked amazing! We will definitely go back to Uptown! We might even make the hour drive out there for lunch one day! read more

A hidden gem. Literally. No signage to let you know there's a great restaurant with great atmosphere right on the Blanco square. Breakfast is outstanding, period. Probably the best crab cake Benedict I've ever had anywhere, and I'm a former restauranteur in San Francisco. Hats off to the chef. The atmosphere inside is also very nice. Update on our opinion of this place. This last visit, service and food were just great and everyone is friendly. The previous visit with the poorly trained staff must have been an anomaly. We have moved from the area and revisited after a fundraiser in Luckenbach. Many times they seat us in the window seats which I like because they seem private -not much sidewalk traffic in Blanco. This was a Saturday visit. To have something like this in Blanco is a real treat and very needed. Having left Texas, I got the chicken fried chicken for old times sake since it is not available near San Francisco. Wonderful and I am so glad I got the petite. If I'd gotten full portion i would not have had the temerity to order dessert on top of the large portions. I made it through all of it though, no harm. Yum. So, my 5-29-13 review is no longer accurate. Visit this place and be happy. read more

What a find this restaurant was! Lovely interior, superior staff, delicious selections! We can hardly wait to go back and try more items on the menu. For dinner, we started with a Garden Salad and Wedge Salad - both excellent. I ordered the Shrimp and Lobster Grits with Real Ale Demi Sauce as an entree with a side of sauted spinach (cooked to perfection) - hubby ordered the Panko Fried Quail with a side of fresh green beans with the idea of sharing. We didn't share because we wouldn't give up our own selections! Ok, we did allow a taste of each others. :-) The food was arranged on the place to be pretty enough for picture and almost too pretty to eat. The flavors of all were amazing from the dressings to the side dishes. We went for lunch and had another excellent meal. The menu is smaller than the dinner one, but offers a nice array of soups, salads, and sanwiches, plus some entrees. Definitely a restaurant that we will return to often! read more

Uptown Blanco Restaurant... a bright star in a wonderful part of Texas... with few really outstanding restaurants.. We have a weekend place not far from Blanco.. and I must say, that Uptown Blanco is a great place; excellent service and a high quality menu.. great wines and super food. The building has been renovated and it is a lovely spot to while away a Friday or Saturday evening. I say, "go for it"...!!!!!!!!!!! So fancy I used my flatware. This location is beautifully redone, and they have preserved the older feel through the tin ceiling, and framing original signs on the stucco (cement?) wall. High ceilings and wood give the space a formal feel, which is balanced out by food and service. We ended up here for breakfast on a Saturday morning, and though it was not packed, service was friendly but slow. The first time I walked in no one was at the hostess station, so I took a menu to peruse for almost 10 minutes before someone appeared. After we were seated, It was at almost 15 minutes before someone came to our table, even though we were seated right next to the servers station. We opted not to go with the breakfast buffet, as we weren't interested in spending $13 apiece for breakfast. The buffet did look well-stocked, and was attended by a chef. Everything we tried was pretty standard fare - bacon, pancakes, eggs, potatoes, etc. The eggs seemed more like the mix purchased from Sysco, and were overdone and rubbery. The potatoes were crunchy and well-seasoned, probably the best thing we had. I've had better, and I've had worse. There aren't too many options in town, especially since Sunset Station closed. read more

Went here on two different occasions and both were just okay. First go around had NY Strip which was not very good...poor grade of beef and not seasoned very well. Wait staff was inexperienced and did not spend time with us after serving or we would have sent the steaks back. Second time around tried the Chicken Fried Steak, it was a good presentation but the breading was so salty we could barely eat it. Again the wait staff would just get passing grades. We loved this place. It was our first time and we were celebrating a family birthday -- ages ranged from 59 to 3. We all thoroughly enjoyed it! The service was fantastic and our waiter very responsive and personable (but not in a cheesy way). The food was excellent and varied. And one member of our party was avoiding gluten. Came to Blanco TX looking for a quick bite after my son's baseball game and we ended up with a great a delicious surprise. This place is a hidden gem and with some of the best upscale food and reasonable prices. We are glad we stumbled into it. Spending my honeymoon with FOOD POISONING... My husband and I chose the restaurant for brunch the morning after our Wedding. We knew going in it would be pricey but we wanted something special and boy was the restaurant beautiful. My husband got the quiche which was soggy and was given the choice of bacon or sausage Niether of which he received with his meal. I was excited for the crepes until they arrived and while they looked beautiful, the filling tasted like a very rich, runny cream cheese icing. I ate about half my meal before scrapping most of the filling out. We went to Uptown last night and had a great time! There were 7 of us, we were immediately seated and the waitstaff was professional and very knowledgeable about their food items. We had some gluten free guests and the chef came out and provided input regarding their gluten free options, which was a wide range of items. The atmosphere is great and the decor was beautiful. What a beautiful place. I had someting called a Migas. I liked it. When I see Avocado as an ingredient, it usually sways me to try it. The whole combination was delicious. The courteous staff kept filling my coffee cup. This is simply one of the places you must try for the whole experience of decent food in a charming setting in the rolling hills of central Texas where you can see the horizon and the air is clean. read more

Had dinner here Saturday night. Granted my reference point is mostly restaurants in New York City, so I was greatly impressed with the cost being about 1/3 for the same quality one would find in NYC. However, I had a steak that was as good as any at one of the top NYC steakhouses, and I have been to many of the top ones. Also I had a plate of FRESH delicious vegetables to accompany the steak with a beautiful bed of lettuce and tomato. Everything was fresh and beautifully prepared and plated in a very pleasing manor. The waitress was responsive and went back to the kitchen several times to get answers from the chef, or as it turned out his staff. There was one question she did not answer when I asked the waitress where the chef had studied, because clearly there was a trained hand behind the meal. Unfortunately, the chef was taking the night off, which meant he was also a talented kitchen manager, so therefore our waitress did not know where the chef had studied. It is also worth mentioning that the little town of Blanco is obviously trying hard to make it an attractive destination. Uptown Blanco Restaurant is a big part of making Blanco a nice place to visit and eat! read more

My husband and I enjoyed the breakfast buffet this past Memorial Day Weekend. We arrived between 10am and 11am and found the place pretty empty other than one other couple and a party going on in the back room. The buffet had plenty of food to choose from and was delicious! We held our 10 year high school reunion here and it could not have gone smoother. The manager worked with me months in advance all the way through the big day. Together, we created a limited menu to meet our price point. Much of the food on the menu is acquired locally and is in season. It was fantastic. They gave us the back dining room at no extra charge. Our 5 year old had the ck strips and green beans, our daughter had the ck marsala (the ravioli was doughy - that was the only food item that wasn't delicious), hubby had the pork chop - amazing, and I had the lobster/shrimp grits - wonderful. Decor is beautiful. Staff /Service were great! Just a small issue though...I looked up the menu on their website prior to leaving home, and liked that the dinner entrees were reasonably priced, which is one of the reasons we drove to Blanco for dinner after seeing the Christmas lights in Johnson City. However we were a little stunned that the menu was at a much higher price level than what is shown on the website. The food was worthy of those prices, we just felt a little dupped by the dramatic difference in price points. I checked again this morning, and the entrees on the dinner menu are in the $9-12 price range...Last night the lowest entree was $18...and most were over $20..that's twice what is advertised. I realize it was probably a "holiday" menu or something; however, they should let that be known on the website I'll totally recommend eating at this restaurant if you are anywhere near Blanco or visiting the Christmas lighting in Johnson City (which was nice, but not as spectacular as I expected) next year. read more

We went for Sunday brunch. We had to wait about ten minutes for a table, which didn't seem too long a wait, until we saw the restaurant wasn't very full. But I figured they may have been short staffed. Food came quickly and was so good. I had the two egg breakfast and my aunt had an omelet. We both enjoyed our food very much. I'm only giving three stars, though, because we waited 15 minutes for our check and at least 15 before we finally were able to flag someone down to actually pay. We had no one come by to check on how our meal was, or to refill water or coffee. $2 for a small cup of coffee with no refill offered was very disappointing, as well. There was never anyone close enough to flag down to ask, even. I'm hoping today's service was not a common thing, because we enjoyed our food very much but the overall experience was so disappointing and we were there much longer than we should have been, just wanting our check and to pay. read more

Went last night for our anniversary and had a great dinner. A beautiful room with beautiful finishes in a historic building. White table cloths, good china and flatware. We love that they have a corkage and you can bring your own (better) wine. We also love the inventive menu and delicious, original salad dressings. Hubster had the sundried tomato vinaigrette and I had the blue cheese vinaigrette, and then we both had salad dressing envy--both were terrific. The seared duck breast was cooked perfectly, and not the same ol' same ol'. The confetti rice and mixed veg saute served on the side were also spot on. Service was friendly and attentive. Fresh baked bread was delish. Our only complaint was the piano player who played ONLY sad, downer "My Funny Valentine" type blues. Who wants to think of jumping off a bridge when you're having a fabulous dinner?! I asked our server if he ever plays any happy songs? "Nope." Such a depressing soundtrack to such a good meal. read more

Provides excellent food in a restored building with high ceilings, palimpsests on the walls and skylights. The service is friendly, although occasionally the food is a bit slow to arrive. The Chicken artichoke (sandwich at lunch, entree at dinner) is my favorite - panfried chicken with a piccata-style sauce and artichoke hearts. Lunch salads are very good. Our parents ordered the NY Strip and were told they were out and would bring a ribeye...it was teh worst looking piece of meat. Tasted awful as well. Four of us ate here on a Thursday night. The restaurant was slow, only 3 tables. The service is good, but the food is outstanding. I had the double cut porkchop which was cooked perfectly. Excellent marinade was delicious and not too salty. The green beans were cooked properly, a little crisp, with a light yet tasty sauce. I particularly enjoyed the corn pudding which was sort of like a mixed cornbread with whole kernals and just the right amount of sweetness, not overpowering and a subtle amount of heat. Others had the prime rib, spinach salad and Alaskan salmon and equally enjoyed their meal. It was a home run. read more
