This is a review for selling clothing. I've sold clothes at several different locations, and I did not love my experience at Uptown Cheapskate. Unlike other buyers, the process here lacked transparency. They sorted through the clothes behind the counter, and did not provide me with a breakdown of what they purchased and for what price. Additionally, there was a long wait! About 1.5 hours. They recommended that I wait in the store as a first time seller. I thought this was super unecessary, as again, they did not include me in the process. I would absolutely recommend dropping your stuff and coming back. Lastly, there was not a great selection of clothes for purchase in that store. I will likely sell elsewhere next time! read more

This place is a gold mine. They have sooo many awesome find here I spend hours getting lost in here. They have all kinds of styles but heavier on the indie/punk than you would find at other thrift shops. But you can still find an eclectic array across most types of fashion. Overall they do an awesome job picking through what they'll put up for sale -I have way more fun here than I do a standard clothing store like Macy's. Update 7/26/19 - went to sell some clothes at uptown and they didn't take much, which I actually found understandable as they curate a lot of what they well. Consistently my go-to consignment store in Austin. Sure, there are many, but none of them have the prices of UC or the customer service that this spot offer. The whole selection is impressive. They've just added a vintage section for men, which is great, because men's clothes are the hardest to get second hand. I typically shop in the women's section, though and the amount of time you can spend here is endless. They have racks on racks of unique clothing ranging from high-end to homemade. The shoe selection is also nice, because they sort by size unlike a lot of other stores. Plus they only take shoes that are in great condition, so you're going to find something almost everytime you go. You can also sell your clothing and they aren't nearly as picky as some other stores in town. They won't take everything, but I've earned a nice amount of in-store credit & cash which I pretty much use exclusively to shop more. It's a way to finance my expensive clothing habit. I will say their accessories are priced weirdly high, but I get it's hard to get good jewelry and when you do, it'll sell for a premium. It's a business. read more

1. Amanda, who handled my clothes, was extremely rude by basically trying to get me to leave the store for having a big box of clothes supposedly because they stop buying clothes at 7pm. The store closes at 9pm and nowhere does it say that they do that. Also it was 6:50pm when I entered the store. She was telling me -repeatedly- what time they supposedly stop buying and that she needed to get home...as if that's my problem. 2. She went through the clothes extremely quickly and out of a huge box only bought 3 items of clothing all of which I was given a total of $7.25 in cash. Mind you those were big brand names and I know they were worth more... I've had good experience with Uptown Cheapskate before but Amanda's customer service was one of the worst I've ever seen before. Her attitude is unacceptable! Update: I appreciate the owner contacting me to remedy the situation and I have in fact received a check for more clothes that he bought. This review is probably long overdue but I like to give credit where credit is due so here it goes: I first came here shortly after the store's grand opening in an effort to find a potential alternative to what was, at the time, the only other store in town where one could get an immediate cash payout for clothing. I won't say the name of the store I was seeking to replace, but it rhymes with Smuffalo Smexchange, and I was tired of their incredibly inconsistent buyers... I resell thrifted clothing for a living (both vintage and contemporary labels) and often need to purge some of my inventory. The fact that Uptown also buys vintage is a huge selling point for me, too... I tend to utilize resale shops a LOT, and can get overly familiar with their quirks, so to speak. Unfortunately, stores like these tend to have a high turnover rate, and that typically means an undertrained buying staff and an incredibly variable seller experience. I won't speak for my experiences with any of their former employees, but I will say this: the only reason I continue to come here is because of one of their buyers, Ayla. She's been working there for years and makes the entire process not only livable but enjoyable. She's incredibly knowledgeable about both current labels AND vintage, and she's the only buyer that seems to be consistent in what she buys in. There have been other great buyers over the years, but they're gone. She's still there being awesome. I sell clothing there at least three or four times a month, sometimes as often as once a week, but I'm sorry to say, if and when she is no longer an employee there, I'll almost certainly go a lot less. Five stars, and every star is for Ayla. If you stop in to sell clothing and the buy counter is run by a girl with brightly-colored hair, you've chosen the right day! (I wrote this review strictly in reference to my experiences as a seller. It is worth mentioning that their other staff is also very helpful and I have nothing bad to say about my experiences shopping there, as their inventory is top notch stuff sold at rock bottom prices... they have an especially low-priced vintage section that's worth checking out, both for men and women, and I consistently see current designer clothing that retails for hundreds of dollars at less than fifty bucks. It is a great store all in all, it's just that one employee in particular is the only reason I PERSONALLY enjoy coming here.) read more

ISO: Places to resell vintage clothing. NOT Uptown Cheapskate. My impression of the staff is that they are unhelpful, pretentious, and unfriendly. I called and had questions about items to sell, the person on the phone did answer my questions, however, ended the conversation with: "You can find that stuff on the web page!". If I wanted to read a webpage, I wouldn't have called directly for assistance. When I showed up with my items to sell, in person, they told me a different policy then what I have been told on the phone. The staff came off indifferent, unhelpful, and as if they didn't want me there. When I suggested that I go somewhere else to sell, their response was "I'm sorry." I've been shopping at uptown since it opened and while I still enjoy stopping in occasionally, the selection is not what it used to be. Obscure designer finds have been replaced with Free People and Forever 21, overall quality has decreased while prices are confusing on certain items (a visibly worn Vince sweater is $42.99 while I'm buying like-new Rachel Comey flats for $24.99). The girls and guys who work the floor are always nice, and usually helpful when they can be. Alice (previous manager) was incredible, Christine who works here now is awesome. They're all usually too backed up with buy counter and straightening the racks to be super attentive, but I work retail as well so I know how that goes. Better atmosphere and prices compared to Buffalo Exchange. read more

This place is great, and you should def stop by if you are concerned with the amount of waste caused by the fashion industry! I popped in and got 4 pieces of clothing for $45. I've also recently sold a bag of clothing and although I didn't get very much, I felt good that some of my clothes were going to get a second chance. The process to get my clothes evaluated took maybe 20 mins, and I didn't have to make an appointment. You just go up to the front desk, sign in and shop while you wait. The owner of this store has now not only stalked me on Yelp but has called me a liar. He was not there in the store when I went in to sell my hat and only has listened to his very unprofessional rude staff. When he texted me I sent him pictures of all angles of this hat and what his staff told him and the truth were 2 different things. Pictures do not lie. He had the audacity to think I would just drop the hat off at the store so he could take a look at it without me being present and maybe he could give me 17.00. I told him I already sold it on Mercari for a price that is fair. I never expected to receive full retail price but I did expect a fair offer. If the owner continues to harass me I will be forced to have my attorney send him a letter to stop. First he replies that I would not let his clerks explain why they low balled me, Then he changes his story and says I grabbed it out of there hands. That is not what happened, When they lowballed I had to ask them 3 times to give me my hat. I did not have to listen to these clerks as to why they low balled me. He was not even in the store to witness any of this and has become defensive and turned it around to say that I was the rude person. Unbelievable, I have all the texts he sent to me and facts and pictures do not lie!!!!! On top of that he says that the pictures I sent him of the hat were not the hat I brought into the store. I see I am not the only person who has been treated very poorly in this store and when they gave a review he stalked them. Its very obvious that he is unable to take constructive criticism and gets defensive and turns it around to make it the customers look like there at fault instead of taking a good hard look at his staff. I came in the store to sell 3 bags of clothes. There was a wait so I made an appointment on their kiosk. The store was only open for another hour. They quoted me 45 minutes to wait and said to shop around or come back in 40-ish minutes to check back in so I didn't lose my spot in line. They said they would call me before starting to look through my items in case the wait became shorter. I wasn't interested in browsing while I waited, so instead I sat in my car out front. Waited for 40 minutes as instructed. When I came back, the lady who told me she'd call me was already halfway through my stuff. I was really annoyed that she had started pricing out my items without me there to agree to the pricing. If I don't think I'm getting a good deal, I don't sell. So I asked if she could tell me the pricing of the items they had already decided to keep before I came back in. She was so rude, acted like it was a huge hassle for her to look back on the computer. She said some brand new Sam Edelman heels I brought in were tagged at $12 and a NWT Johnny Was dress was tagged at $18. I said I wanted them back. She scoffed at me and said, "No, you should have been here, your items are already tagged and being put out on the floor to sell." What?? I grabbed my remaining items from her and had to ask her 3 times before getting the heels, dress, and all my other stuff she had tagged back. So unfair, unfriendly and unprofessional. I left with all my stuff and went to Buffalo Exchange instead where I had a much better experience. What a waste of time! Don't sell here. read more

I have been a vendor seller to uptown for quite a while now. I sell online and bring some of my overstock, vintage, and random accessories by here when I get buried underneath too many things. Ayla is literally the BEST human being on this planet. She's an amazing buyer and she is always great conversation. We have really similar tastes and she always helps me leave way lighter than when I came in. I know there are other places around, especially to sell vintage, but I enjoy selling with her. The employees are always friendly and help with the extra bags and usually buy things that I sell to them. I've even had a few employees wear stuff I've sold to them and tell me how they love the stuff. From a buying standpoint I always find something when I'm browsing and at least usually leave with one item. I recently purchased a free people jumpsuit that retails for $128 for around $25. They also have super cute vintage from other sellers that is perfect for anyone's closet. You can find super cute stuff here and they always have sales or discounts going on. I came in here to check out their selection during tax-free weekend. There was a lot of different items to include high end (Jimmy Choo shoes) all the way down to the lower end (think forever 21). I didn't purchase anything but would consider coming back in the future to check out more of their selections. All I can say, is I have only written 11 reviews in my life. I really love Austin, and especially care about supporting our local economy. That being said, when an injustice occurs, it should not be ignored, it should be addressed and known. Especially when it happens to a Young Woman whom has had mold in her house for a month and was just trying to sell her Marc Jacobs Purse. I left a bag full of clothing on a Sunday to be appraised because the store was closing. One of the items was a one of a kind Marc by Marc Jacobs purse in deep purple with gorgeous red straps from Burgdorf Goodman in Pebble Leather. I was tired of looking at the purse in my closet and was considering selling it. Much to my dismay, the purse went missing while in the possession of UPTOWN CHEAPSKATE. I was told the owner would call me. He didn't. I went to the store a week later and told the Manager at the front that I was very dissatisfied and needed to speak to the owner. He waited two days before texting me, no call. Then said he needed time to look over the security tapes. Then passed me off to another manager because he was on vacation. Again, much to my dismay he was unable to find anything and said that my purse was probably donated to charity. I do not UNDERSTAND how this is possible. If the world is created of good and bad then the owner of Uptown Cheap needs to look in the mirror and join the light and be a nice human being. I simply wanted $40 dollars for the inconvenience.
