All I can say, is I have only written 11 reviews in my life. I really love Austin, and especially care about supporting our local economy. That being said, when an injustice occurs, it should not be ignored, it should be addressed and known. Especially when it happens to a Young Woman whom has had mold in her house for a month and was just trying to sell her Marc Jacobs Purse. I left a bag full of clothing on a Sunday to be appraised because the store was closing. One of the items was a one of a kind Marc by Marc Jacobs purse in deep purple with gorgeous red straps from Burgdorf Goodman in Pebble Leather. I was tired of looking at the purse in my closet and was considering selling it. Much to my dismay, the purse went missing while in the possession of UPTOWN CHEAPSKATE. I was told the owner would call me. He didn't. I went to the store a week later and told the Manager at the front that I was very dissatisfied and needed to speak to the owner. He waited two days before texting me, no call. Then said he needed time to look over the security tapes. Then passed me off to another manager because he was on vacation. Again, much to my dismay he was unable to find anything and said that my purse was probably donated to charity. I do not UNDERSTAND how this is possible. If the world is created of good and bad then the owner of Uptown Cheap needs to look in the mirror and join the light and be a nice human being. I simply wanted $40 dollars for the inconvenience. I love uptown! One of my favorite thrift stores/secondhand shops in town. Always a great selection with new items put out regularly. I've found so many good quality brand name items here that get so many compliments! The people who work here are also always super friendly and helpful! I went to Uptown Cheapskate for a closed event where we had the store to ourselves, so this might not be the same experience when they are open to the public, but something says that they are always great! I have been to my fare share of thrift stores and this one is really nice! It is deceptively large when you walk in. They seemed to have a little bit of everything for everyone. There was a good sized men's area in the front of the store. This is something to note. Usually, when I walk into thrift stores it is all the women's clothes everywhere and there is a small, tucked away, hidden section for the men. I loved that they had sections in both the men's and women's area of actual retro items. They also had a large array of lines: from really expensive brands to your Forever 21 items. The sales associates went above and beyond! They were super friendly and helpful. My husband and I decided to have fun trying on items we chose for each other. One of the associates took my husband around the store and helped him find things that might look good on me and could fit me, when my husband would be completely in the dark. There was an associate in the dressing room area to help you with whatever you might need. She helped me zip my dress that I couldn't reach. And she was there to give me an extra eye. She was very positive and knowledgeable about the items I was trying on. I think they price the items very well. My husband found some shoes that were originally over $100 and still looked like in great shape for $40. They were even having a sale while we were there. I found several Free People items for under $10. I will definitely be back soon! read more

I've shopped here a few times and it's always a good experience. They have a huge selection, great prices, and the employees are nice and helpful. There's a wide variety of clothing from funky and vintage to contemporary and brand name. The store can get a little crowded but it helps that someone always pops up to take your armful of clothing for you! Definitely recommend. read more

The ambience is super loud music, cement floors and young staff that didn't seem to be too interested in customers. What got me in the door was seeing a review where one girl claimed her "one of a kind" lmaoooo "pebbled" designer bag was lost and the multi paragraph response [from the company] that followed. The responses to the few one star reviews are pure gold. Like whoever is the customer service responder needs to check out a career in law. I am telling you-litigator in the making. So being that I'm traveling around America lately, I thought it would be easier to buy more clothes then leave my hotel to find a coin laundry-plus I wanted to get away from the downtown area. Well what a nice store! In real life I exclusively buy my clothes online, so it's very weird to go, like, into a store to get actual clothes. I felt like I was in the 90's and it was great. There's lots of selection and clothes are basically almost free with how low the prices are. I got this fly $6 shirt this says 'all you need is love and gangsta rap' and that about sums up my life, except I don't listen to rap, but my spirit animal probably does. All in all, it was a pretty okay haul, they did have an extensive selection, some things were pretty pricey, nice but pricey, hey you get what you pay for right? Cool COOL threads n great prices. My fave! I'm not too keen on specifics because I wanna see my favorite pieces there when I need them, but Uptown's got my favorite cool and chic brands and TONS of pants. They could, however, do better with the small men's selection. This city really does not do very well to offer too many items for those more sleek men (S, XS) sizes and more cool choices within those sizes. However Uptown does better than most. I always find something I like/LOVE there. Because I won't buy it unless I LOVE it! They could get better hats (bigger selection) though. But their shoes are AWESOME and threads are TOP! If you like shopping for one-of-a-kind items that just so happen to reduce your carbon footprint, kind, knowledgable employees, at an establishment that gives back to the community, this is the store for you! This place is an absolute gem. I find such unique, beautiful things here. And, to boot, their employees are so helpful and friendly. Yesterday I was there and had the most wonderful experience with Elijah, Jamie, and Hannah S. I was having a difficult day and not in the best mood when I walked in. When I walked out, I felt completely different thanks to them. Plus I had several awesome finds. I called today to let the manager, Jason, know, and he said he was going to take them out to lunch. This is the kind of store this is! It makes me want to shop there all the more, knowing they really care about their employees, in addition to their customers. I also love that they donate the items that they can't sell and that the customer consents to them donating to an organization that turns it in usable materials. They don't just throw it away and dump it in a landfill. So you can feel good about the items you can't sell, too. It's a win-win-win! I hope Elijah, Jamie, Hannah, and Jason had a wonderful lunch today, and, as usual, I can't wait to make my way back to Uptown Cheapskate! read more

I've bought and sold here, and I've had good experiences on both sides. Everyone is so nice! They have a great and affordable and eclectic selection - my style tends toward the 40s/50s/60s and I have yet to walk out of here empty-handed. On the selling side, I'm going through a major destash and they were super psyched to get all my vintage-inspired dresses and boots. VERY glad to finally find a home for them! That other store (er, the one up by UT) caters to 19 year olds and usually isn't interested. Pro tip: read the vendor instructions on their site before you go. You can totally just drop stuff off and they'll call you when your buy is processed (awesome), but if you stay in the store you get priority. I got there right when they opened on a Saturday and was in and out in an hour. Awesome. Many friends recommended this place to me and I'm so glad they did! read more

This place reeks like cheap perfume. Not a subtle bit in the background, but an overpowering, smell-it-outside kind of punch in the face. This store is filled with off brands, tired clothing, and cheapy, plastic jewelry, all crunched in together so tightly that you can't move the hangers around. When I didn't have 5 seasonal items for Moss, they sent me down here, and I honestly cannot figure out why. It's on par with a downscale Plato's Closet and several steps down from Buffalo Exchange, where you're much more likely to catch a mid-range designer brand here and there. I think Austin is really lacking a consignment store that is careful about what it accepts and is in between super high end and really shitty. I would classify this place as a thrift store, as far as what you can expect quality-wise, and it's not even all that inexpensive considering. read more

I actually like this place. It's definitely a step up from Savers. I'm not saying anything bad about Savers because it's one of my favorite thrift stores to go to in Austin. If I want to find something more high end on the thrift store ranks this would be it. Uptown would be on the same line as Buffalo Exchange. I like the selection they have and I ended up buying a bunch of nice clothes for work. I found 2 St. Johns blouses for just $25 each. First experience selling my clothes to resale shop today. I had one bag of dresses and tops and another with shoes. I went in early afternoon and it was not too busy-just one person with a bag of clothes to evaluate before mine. I was told it would be about 45 minutes and since it was my first time they recommended I wait in the store. The store has PLENTY of merchandise and it appears well organized. Primarily women's apparel but there is a men's section. (All apparel thoough, no home goods or anything). Price point was a bit higher than I expected but the quality was pretty good. I got bored wandering around after 5 minutes (I actually hate clothes shopping), wish they had some seating area if they prefer people stay. After a bit over an hour they called my name and called my number (glad they reached out once they were done, unlike other places) UC offered $25 cash (or ~$36 store credit) for about 4 brand new dresses and one pair of strappy heels. I was expecting slightly more, and they didnt actually explain how they arrived at their pricing or even why they picked certain items. So I'm not really sure why they wanted me to stay in the store (to entice me to shop, maybe)? Anyway, this place was okay as a seller. I took the rejected clothes back (left the shoes to donate) and will try another business for the rest. read more

Best re-sale shop I've ever been to. They have a wide selection of women's clothing. From designer Gucci, to Forever 21, to vintage you are bound to find something you like. They carry a good section of men's clothing and shoes. The customer service is exceptional, everyone there seems to love what they are doing and want to help you find something great. As far as trade-ins they will purchase items in good condition. If you take store credit vs cash you get 25% more back. Oh another great thing about Uptown Cheapskate is the location. Recently brought three large bags full of mixed clothing (designer and basic) for sell. I was previously informed that dropping off first thing in the AM would prove beneficial in expediting the buying process. I arrived at opening (11:37AM on a Sunday), and was informed that they had been slammed (within the first 5 minutes of opening). Ok - totally understandable - I am not the only person trying to sell items on a Sunday. Informed it would be an hour. Ok, no problem... Went home, and waited to receive a call upon completion. After many hours, I had to contact them (around 5:30PM - store closes earlier on Sunday's). At that time, I was told I could come in by close (6PM, I believe), and the buy would be completed. I arrived about 5 minutes before closing; was informed that the buy hadn't even been looked at; and will not be until the following day. Again, understandable...They had been slammed - totally get it. I received a notification the following day that I was being offered $4.00 for my items. Four bucks. I dropped off at least 100 items of clothing - nearly half being designer items (not exaggerating). Now, I understand the buying process, and all of the factors that are considered when items are purchased from a seller. I've sold to Uptown before... Far less items, and received a much larger buyout (i.e. one bag of clothing and offered upwards of $75.00). But this go around was almost like a slap in the face. I would have been better off just donating to Goodwill. Let's be real - I'm certainly not looking to get rich off of these transactions. I simply wanted to share my experience with interested readers. After reading a few management responses, I noticed a definite tone through the owner - one that is not typical of most Austin business owners. By all means, stake your ground... but remember, you are in the business of customer service and retail. All in all, I was floored at some of the owners responses - but that is aside the point. I am not looking for management to respond, nor address my concerns... I'm over it. Lesson learned - It may be best to simply donate to Goodwill down the street. You may not receive any cash money for your donations, but at least you know it's going to a good place. Overall, Uptown is cool. You should check them out for yourself. The staff is usually friendly, and they are typically pretty fair with sells. I suppose I was just disappointed in the owner's approach to customer concerns. It's all about supporting local business. But it should be a business you believe in, and want to support. I would never bash Uptown, but I am not sure I'll ever return. read more
