I went in here a little while ago with a lot of clothes to sell that fit the aesthetic and clothes they sold at the store and left feeling very insulted. The lady at the front told me they didn't accept clothes in trash bags but said they would look through them this one time. I walked around the store waiting for them to look through my bags and they called me over 5 minutes later and said they didn't find anything to keep. However I noticed they hadn't even opened my bags. A lot of the clothes were new with tags and some were free people and brands they had at the store. I felt very judged and insecure and the lady was very condescending. read more

I pick which days I come to uptown depending on who is working. I agree with the previous reviews - the owner is judgy and not welcoming at all. However, most of the other staff are great and super attentive. Selection is good and it's why I keep coming back. Prices are higher than I think they should be but still decent prices for the brands you can get. read more

I recently picked up unwanted items and asked for a few back, same day. One employee gave me a dirty look and sort of tossed the items on the counter. Customers shouldn't leave feeling judged and disrespected. Very nice! Like Plato's Closet but much cleaner and more organized. I'm not a 'brand' person but whomever does the buying for this shop has great taste. I found a lot of clothes for myself and my daughter that were very stylish and affordable. Next trip, we're bringing the guys. They had a nice sized men's department too. It's always great service given here and the clothes I find here have always been amazing. Lululemon treasures are here once and while but definitely worth the pay. I really like the standards they keep here when purchasing clothes from customers. The owner is really nice and I always enjoy how she treats her employees. That is one of the reasons I come. First time seller here and the vibe was terrible. The older blonde woman who I am assuming is the owner didn't greet me or look up from her conversation for a few minutes as I brought in a basket of clothes all folded nicely, ready to sell and stood there waiting. She took 3 pairs of name brand jeans (Levi's,BDG, Carhartt) with no flaws hardly worn for $18 and then didn't even show me what she took? I asked which items were selected and she still didn't show me which was weird, hoping she didn't take more when I wasn't looking? Weird off putting vibe. They also are selling knock off uggs and other random things so to be so snobby and unreasonable about buying was shocking. Won't be returning, seems many others have similar experiences. Thrifty threads, buffalo exchange and many other places are way kinder and offer better deals!!!! read more

Just had a phenomenal first time experience and I just want to thank everyone working here for being so kind and so helpful !! They took 27 out of my 30 items and I was able to donate the rest ! Had to option for $200 in store credit or $160 in cash ! How amazing is that? I ended up finding agolde shorts NWT and grlfrnd Jeans that look brand new Fitting rooms are OPEN ! Thank god. And they sanitize before and after every person (just Incase you're worried but if you are just stay home :)) LOVE THIS PLACE 10/10 recommend Hospitality & customer service 100% I'm experienced selling everywhere / have 6 years of experience being a 'buyer' at other trade stores and this place just does it right ! The shop is always clean and I can usually always find one or more things that I can add to my wardrobe. Every time my daughter is in town it's always a stop on her itinerary. Inaccurate wait times and some staff members seem annoyed when helping other customers. The selection clothes of clothes were questionable, it seemed like they favor clothes that were popular 5 years ago. I would not donate any clothes to this location considering they'll probably use it as a tax write off. It is better to donate your clothes yourself. Waste of time. read more

I came into Uptown Cheapskate a couple months ago seeking to re-sell two full bins worth of clothes and only two items were taken. I was extremely disappointed, with probably 40 items in good conditions and only two taken. They said my clothes were not in season and some were worn too much. I find this hard to believe because there were also business/work clothes, sweatshirts, and other items that were bought and worn once. Their other reason was they were brands they don't sell. However, the brands in the box were wild & fable (which I saw on their sales rakes), Banana Republic, Levi jeans, and others. It really just seemed like an excuse to not buy the clothes. I understand they can't take everything but when the reason of their store is to help recycle clothes and I have pieces that could help a low-income mom could wear for an interview, it truly did disappoint me. Also on top of this, the women who went through my clothes and served me was rude and I left feeling sad. This was my last time in uptown cheapskates. From my experience it was the end for my friends, mom, and sister as well. read more

If you're looking for a thrift store that's catered towards low class this is not for you. There's high end brands here like Zara and Lululemon but I would not consider it your typical thrift store. Shirts aren't 2-5 dollars here. The clothes do feel clean, organized, and good quality. XS is very limited. I am not the target audience for this store and would leave a better review if they had more variety! read more

This place is awesome! Like a platos closet but a million times better. I'd say this place is fancier and definitely has way better items than platos; including designer items. I came here to sell a lot of my designer clothes that I no longer wear, that I knew would be to high end for platos closet to accept (they've denied my name brand clothes before). This place knows what style is, everything I saw was in fashion and affordable. When I leave platos closet like almost everyone they rarely take anything and I leave disappointed. This place is another story, I left very happy with quite a bit of cash in my pocket and did not feel ripped off. Customer service was fantastic. The lady that helped me was very friendly and complimented me on all the nice things I had to sell. I made the most money from my designer items like Versace and Armani. So if you have name brand clothes that just sits in your closet and you want to make money on them, this is the place to go! If you're looking to purchase clothes for your wardrobe this place has incredible deals on designer items and name brand items. They also sell shoes, handbags, and men's clothing! I LOVE this place and everything I find in here. Their store is very well organized by brands, sizes and categories and I never see anything out of place. Their jean selection is incredible with so many good name brands. It's really nice that they have a little section just for Free People. I've seen new Tory Burch bags with tags on them for $90. I love selling my own items to them because they buy more from me than places like Buffalo Exchange. The staff here is also much more kind, not just when selling but in general. It is a must when traveling to check out thrift/ consignment stores. I did some research ahead of time and read about this cool store. I was amazed at the variety they offered. They had a full rack of clothes for all season which is understandable as San Diego has nice weather almost all year long. I was greeted by staff and complimented on my dress. I picked up a couple of pieces. Everything was reasonably priced. It was hard not to go over board and spend my whole paycheck here. Lived in the area for 8 years so I've been supporting this place since they first opened in what, 2018? Didn't always love how the owner (older blonde lady) treated other customers, but always had such an amazing experience with one of the girls at the front so I kept coming back. I always had luck with selling here up until recently when said-owner completed my clothing buy. They wanted to take a few things (for the lowest they've ever offered me before, meanwhile their current price tags are at the highest they've ever been) but the owner couldn't just leave it at that. In what was probably the most condescending tone I've ever been spoken to in, she held up one of my items, literally dangled it in the air and said "we would have taken this sweater, but it's falling aparttttt...." with the snarkiest look on her face. The sweater in question was a $79 purposely-distressed cardigan, brand new from Urban Outfitters. I didn't care she didn't want to buy the sweater, it's the fact she insists on embarassing her customers day in and day out for no reason. I've watched her do unnecessary things to young girls every time I've come here and at this point it is very clear none of our business is appreciated here. While I'm here, I feel it should be acknowledged that I was here when someone stole a bunch of merchandise last year and how the owner handled it was actually more concerning than the stealing itself. I was standing by the checkout where the owner was when someone ran out the front door with stuff. One of the employees alerted the owner and she yelled at her employee "get her!!!!" The employee did run after the woman in the parking lot and when she came back she said she had been hit in the face and that the woman stealing got away. I worked retail for years and regular retail employees cannot and should not chase after shoplifters in the state of California for a multitude of legal reasons - one of them being your literal safety. Instead of taking the lead, this owner of Uptown Cheapskate put her young employee at risk and in harm's way by ordering her to chase after the person. Her employee seemed upset and frazzled when she came back and the first people to ask if she was okay were us, the customers and her coworkers - not the owner. Not knowing if shoplifters are armed, violent, etc, it is truly so baffling thinking back on how the owner handled this and how badly things could have gone (they already did go bad, she put her employee in a position to be hit in the face). I love the clothes here, the prices are reasonable for some of the more name brand items. Today was my first experience selling and it was pretty good. The young woman helping me sell my items was extremely kind and approachable. I wish I could say the same about the other workers. One in particular was extremely cold and stand-offish to the point I felt uncomfortable. She made no effort to help with customers unless spoken to. Barely made eye contact. Her demeanor with her coworkers was noticeably more friendly though. It felt like a weird high school clique situation. I rarely write reviews but her attitude compelled me to leave one today. Would do the business a lot of good to have more friendly staff or at least teach them how to be more approachable. read more

Staff is stuck up. They have you shop while they're going through your clothes so that you don't see what they take. I asked the girl what she was buying for 8$ and it was two lululemon tops They're super picky but you look around and they really don't have nice stuff and their prices are really high for what you get. Fabulous place. I read the reviews and I am glad that I tried it out for myself. After having a nightmare experience at my sisters closet, I thought I would never consign again. Thank goodness Uptown was the complete opposite. :) They staff is kind, professional, and efficient. The place doesn't smell like the other consignment shop and the store is reasonably priced, organized, and super cute. I usually don't leave reviews but I had such a negative experience I felt like I needed to share. I've sold here before, and the girls working were just gossiping about others and saying rude comments about (what seemed like) the other people who work there. This is what happened today as well. Not the best customer experience. Additionally, they have a sign posted that says they don't accept bags anymore. I came in and was instructed to fold all my clothes into a bin provided. This was fine. However, Dana literally took less time looking through all my clothes than I did folding them all. So what was the point? I had four huge bags (initially) of clothes in great condition. They bought three items and I got about $6. She spent probably 5 minutes deciding this about my HUGE selection. Trash talking workers + not giving customers the time of day = don't go to uptown cheapskate. read more

There were cute things in the store, but don't come here if you want to sell anything, it's a waste of time. I'm downsizing due to moving states, and I thought I'd bring in some of the nicer things that I'm getting rid of, try to see if I can get any extra cash. I brought in nice, in style, and clean dresses, tops, jumpsuits and overalls, and not a single item was sold. Couldn't even get a reason why other than they were packed with items. If you have an overflow, I can appreciate that, but tell me when I walk in. Not after going through all my stuff, seems dishonest. But they were oohing and aahing about a necklace someone brought in, and I heard them say it was broken. Frankly, I'm confused as to why my items were rejected when they have super cheap Zara and SHEIN items that barely classify as clothes, and were in far worse condition than what was brought in. Carlsbad beautiful beach with my son and his girlfriend visiting from Puerto Rico to get some some great items and still having some money left over for a great dinner!
