Our experience with Uptown Eye Specialists was extremely disappointing. My partner was referred for cataract surgery, and what should have been a straightforward process turned into four separate appointments before finally receiving a surgery date. Because his eyesight had deteriorated significantly, I had to take time off work to drive him to each appointment, resulting in four half-days of lost work. Every visit involved long waits, overcrowded waiting rooms packed with patients, and what felt like a factory-style operation. Patients were shuffled from station to station, and we never felt that individualized care was a priority. More concerning was that every appointment seemed to focus heavily on upselling premium lenses and additional options. By the time we finally received a surgery date, we felt exhausted and frustrated by the process. The experience left us questioning why so many appointments were necessary when much of the discussion centered on additional costs rather than the surgery itself. My partner felt more like a customer being sold products than a patient receiving medical care. Ultimately, despite finally receiving a surgery date, we lost confidence in the process and decided to have the surgery performed at Herzig Eye Institute instead. The difference was night and day. It felt like going from a third-world clinic where patients were herded through like sheep to a boutique clinic where patients are treated like royalty. The care was professional, efficient, personalized, and respectful. The cost was comparable, yet the overall experience was vastly superior. read more

RUN from Uptown Eye Specialists. Scammers! I am beyond disappointed and angry with the experience we had there. From the moment we walked in, the waiting rooms were packed and the entire process felt more like a sales operation than patient care. My partner went in for cataract surgery consultations covered by OHIP. After the first round of testing, we were moved into another room where an employee barely explained anything medically and instead focused almost entirely on upselling expensive out-of-pocket lenses for astigmatism. We were told he had "moderate to severe" astigmatism and that special lenses were strongly recommended. I asked for a quote to send to our insurance company. We were told we had to come back at the NEXT appointment. So we returned. More testing. Still no real explanation of the surgery or tests - just more upselling. Again, we asked for an estimate. Again, we were told we had to come back for measurements. We returned AGAIN. More testing. More upselling. Still no estimate. Finally, they told us they would only provide the estimate AFTER booking the surgery date. So we booked the surgery just to finally get the paperwork for insurance. Then came the final straw. After already being told twice that measurements were being done, they tried to make us come back AGAIN for measurements because they had not done any! At that point, I refused. I said we were not wasting another day of work and that this entire process felt like nothing but a constant push to sell upgraded lenses, and I EXPECTED the measurements to be done that day. They reluctantly agreed. It was not a pleasant situation. Something didn't sit right with me, so before submitting the insurance claim, I called my partner's optometrist to ask why they had never mentioned his astigmatism before. The answer shocked us. His optometrist said the astigmatism was so minor it was barely worth mentioning -- around 0.25 and 0.5. Meanwhile, Uptown was claiming it was 2.0 and 3.0 and pushing expensive specialty lenses because of it. We immediately cancelled the surgery because we no longer trusted them. We went to another very reputable clinic instead, and the difference was night and day. Everything was professional, transparent, explained properly, and completed in only TWO appointments. No pressure. No games. Patients deserve honesty, transparency, and proper medical explanations -- not endless appointments and constant upselling. read more

My pharmacy faxed a prescription change request (as meds on back order) a week ago. Zero reply. Disappointed as eye drops are required daily for my condition as stressed by my doctor. So I'm a week off them and noticing a difference. Not very happy that I can't speak to anyone on the phone at this office about the status. read more

I don't know if they have a new phone system but it is literally impossible to get through to the office now. When you call, you get a message that gives you 3 options, none of which enable you to talk to someone or leave a message. If you call the other line to enquire about your appointment, you get a message saying they're experiencing a high volume of calls and to call back later and you get hung up on!! I called at 10pm when they're closed and 7am when they're not open and still got the same recording!!! read more

Dr. Chui is the most irresponsible doctor I have ever met in Toronto. She was in charge of my dad's cataract surgery for both eyes. First, she rescheduled the original surgery date to fit her own schedule, and we complied. During the surgery process, she showed little care for the patient. For the post-surgery visit, she did not show up at all, leaving the nurse to conduct a very brief examination and simply declare everything was fine. However, my dad has experienced discomfort after the surgery. From our experience, she seems to be more driven by money than by medical ethics. I do not recommend her at all. read more

Due to impending snowstorm on Feb 13, I tried to cancel my appointment for that date. I gave over 48 hr notice ..messaged them, as no human connection available. Message sent at 9:45 AM ..They emailed me back there would be a $55 cancellation fee because I didn't give 2 FULL business days notice. Weather no excuse!.. looks like a $$$ driven business. .not patient friendly. Reluctantly, I kept my appointment. Best part..at noon on the day of my appt, I was called by Uptown wanting to cancel my appt because the were closing early!!!!! I demanded they keep my appt. ..or would expect $55 for my troubles.. Appt was rushed ..guess they wanted to leave...an more test$ were ordered.. In all, I will need 4 separate appts, minimum .and duplicate tests done had been performed at my regular eye appt with my Eye Doctor...why not ask for my records? It seems like an opportunity to keep billing OHIP.. why not coordinate tests and the doctor consult in same visit?. ..My family eye doctor has results available from tests during examination. Final 3 tests required..2 covered by OHIP, other was a $155 charge and I HAD to have all 3..was told the ONLY treatment for Glaucoma was laser treatment.. I can imagine the cost of that! I went to my first cataract surgery appointment at their Brampton clinic last week and was not impressed. As expected it was "assembly line medicine", but they seem to have corrected some of the booking problems noted by others. The waiting room was full but I was seen on time and the whole visit took just over 30 minutes as promised. (I did notice that people who were waiting when I got there looked annoyed when I was seen ahead of them, but I assume they were there for different reasons.) First I was called in to have my eyes "tested". The technician was not wearing a name tag, she did not introduce herself. She did not explain the test she was going to do. When asked, she gave minimal information and was clearly annoyed that I had asked what the test was for. I was then sent back to the waiting room. Again I was called into another room by a woman who did not have a name tag and did not introduce herself. When I asked who she was, she told me she was the "coordinator", but did not give me her name. She gave me basic information and a very detailed cataract information booklet. When I asked questions, she also appeared annoyed. She did not/could not give me the detailed information I was looking for (e.g. specific risks, side effects); she was unable to answer some questions (e.g. regarding specific medications used) and told me to ask them at my next appointment. I was sent back to the waiting room. The next person to call me in was Jorge (? George). He immediately introduced himself, explained in detail what he was going to do and the rationale for the test. He then asked for "permission" to instill eye drops. He explained the results of the test, made recommendations and even gave me written instructions when I asked for clarification. He had an accent so I had some difficulty understanding him, but he happily repeated himself when asked. He even walked me out. I was very impressed with his professionalism and his friendly manner. This visit ended on a high note, but overall I was not given a good first impression of this organization. My eyesight is precious to me and I need complete confidence in all of the people caring for me. My next visit is with the physician, so I won't make any decisions until then. read more

My mom experienced complications following left eye cataract surgery this summer and after a 3 month follow up where we waited 3 hours to see the surgeon was told her eye was dry and to continue using eye drops. We will be cancelling the surgery for the right eye as we don't want the surgeon touching the other eye. And we will be seeking a second opinion regarding the left eye. This clearly overbooks patients and expects them to wait up to 3 hours to be seen. Complete disrespect for the patient population which mostly consists of seniors. I do not recommend you use this clinic for your cataract surgery. read more

I've had my surgeries BUT It is quite frustrating that with so many people working at the Brampton office you are unable to talk to a live person. They want you to email them and then you get an automatic reply saying they'll get back to you in 24 to 48 hours. It would be nice to able to call and speak to a real person, or perhaps they could get back to you at least the same day as it's important if you need a prescription refill. It's a noreply, so can't ask any questions I have prior to going. the phone number listed goes into a voicemail/messaging mess which is designed to deflect having to actually talk to patients. I wish I had read the reviews before going here. Mom is diabetic, fam doc recommended her to get eyes checked out. We went twice for some pre tests. First appointment was good, was done in one hour and was informed about the process. Got the second appointment, in which the cataract surgery was planned. Spent around 3 hours with multiple tests, just to be be informed that they can't do the surgery because my mom is diabetic and she needs a letter from the fam doc prior to the surgery. What a waste of time, they knew before hand she was diabetic, made us go through the whole process just to tell us at the end that they wont do it. read more

This place is run purely as a business. Zero and I do mean zero concerns for patients. I had an 8 AM appointment and when I arrived at 5 to 8, there was already 15 people in the waiting room and I didn't see Dr. Maini until 845. When I told him I wasn't interested in surgery, he instantly moved away from me and did not talk to me again. The surgery he was suggesting was to pad his pocket and was not necessary at all. I had a partial cornea transplant performed by Dr. Raj Mahini. He doesn't answer any question, very arrogant and rude You are kept waiting for hour. Surgery was a nightmare, I could feel and see what he was doing, it was torture. He damaged my eye so badly I eventually lost complete vision in that eye. I had to go to see Dr Rootman at Western Hospital for a complete cornea transplant, I could see now how eye surgery was supposed to have been performed. Unlike the first horrible experience that I was made to pay for, I was taken care by a far superior surgeon as in Dr. Rootman and was not charged for this service. Do NOT go to Dr Mahini at any cost, you will be very sorry If you do. read more

Terrible Terrible and Terrible. I was like walking into a corp. business. I was in line for 30 mins to check in. Then it was have a seat and your number will be called. Finally get in - a 3 hr. appointment, and the doctor says that they can not do the procedure anymore because it is not funded. The idiot told be to google it for help in Quebec or the US. In 50 years, I've never received this lack of service. FYI - they do do this in Ontario - perhaps you've heard of Bochner or Herzig eye solutions. Just awful that they are billing this terrible service. Reception does not exist...you will never get through to them. Instead they send you on a goose chase. Got here half hour early and still had to wait for a while. It's been 40 mins now. And was just told I now have to wait an hour more. The place is packed. They schedule appointments all over the time frame. Unable to call as they insist on emails. Not a lot of seniors have email. They get back to you in two days after the email. The line up for check in is long. Everyone yelling personal informations. All the different areas yelling peoples names. They keep wanting you to come back. First appointment is testing. Second appointment they dilate the eyes and you see the doc. 3rd appointment is surgery. Like who has time for this. They said their system is down this morning, but it's actually slow. But they should still be able to accommodate people for their appointed time. They waiting for IT department to fix the computer. They say. Because they tell you to make 3 hr time frame when you book the appointment and I knew it. Didn't know that when you make an appointment it doesn't mean you will be seen at said time! I told them to call people and tell them not to show up for their appointments today, because this is ridiculous. One guy just walked in. They took him in and an hour later he came out of procedure and registered his OHIP. I'm told there are lots of On call patients today!! Never heard of that before. read more

They pack you in like sardines and make you wait hours for each visit. I don't get why they book appointments they cannot fulfill? If this was any other business - we would be demanding refunds. We've been here four times and have had to wait well over an hour each time. An hour AFTER our appointment, we are typically told we have 2-4 patients ahead of us. My visit to the Brampton uptown Eye Specialists was very good. The Reception that I dealt with was very pleasant, and I was treated with respect. Ruby the Surgery Coordinator was very professional and in the same breath very pleasant. She was very knowledgeable and informed me of all the procedures that would take place. She answered all my questions and I never felt like I was a problem. Dr. Somani was very professional and informed me on my 1st visit, what the procedures would be like. His calm nature allowed me to be comfortable in all of the 3 surgeries that was done. My follow-up visits with the other Doctors was very good and my questions were all answered. All the technicians that I interacted with were all professional. My criticism would be if they have a new way of calling the patient, sometimes its very difficult to know which room to enter. read more

After a 3 hr wait, one of the Doctors saw me for 5 mins, peered in to my eye for 30 secs, said I'd need to have surgery/laser treatment done on my eyes, but before that I'd have to pay out of pocket for a test to confirm. I was not given any explanations, or discussions, or options or even how serious the condition was. There were a lot of people, the waiting room was packed and it seemed like they were subjecting everyone for these tests at $155 each. In fact, that was the first piece of information handed to me. It was an assembly line and they tried to get me in the following week, but I said I wasn't comfortable and that I needed time to consider, digest and get a second opinion. And guess what? Dr. Somani was recommended to me as one of the best in the business by my opthamologist and he was right. My first surgery on the right eye went off without a hitch but there was a glitch in the second operation the following year but Dr. Somani did a great job in rectifying it. The employees at the facility in Brampton are all terrific, pleasant and very professional. But would I ever go back? No. You don't book two people for appointments at the same time and keep them hanging around for up to three hours. That's a joke. And the price for one eye to another the following a year saw a whopping increase. I nearly fell off my chair. If you are covered it's fine, but I wasn't. My Wife went for an eye surgery at the this clinic with Dr. Raj Maini and he is one of the worst doctors ever. She had a blocked tears duct and the surgery was supposed to help here cry normally again. We know that the chances were very small, but our problem wasn't with the outcome of the operation. 1- First, as said in previous reviews the staff are very rude and unprofessional. They don't respect patients or care for their feelings, especially ahead of a surgery and they show zero sympathy. 2- The doctor didn't explain the proceedings of the surgery and therefore my wife passed out when she saw a surgical scissor in the hand of the doctor, despite being under local anesthesia. 3- My wife almost chocked and couldn't breath because of the mask and the doctor's only concern was about removing the mask. 4- The doctor panicked during the surgery and caused lots of pain to my wife because he didn't apply the anesthesia properly. 5- Finally, he told us that there is no need for a follow-up appointment and that our business with him is completed. I know that you can't sue a doctor in Canada as they are very well protected. But we've got to find a way to protect ourselves from these practices. The healthcare in Canada sucks and its reputation is really deceiving with long waiting periods, inexperienced doctors, wrong diagnosis, unprofessional and untrained staff. read more

Uptown Eye Specialists Brampton My one star rating is for the Receptionist who always calls to schedule my mom's monthly appointments. The doctors are absolutely amazing! I take my mom for monthly eye injections at Brampton Uptown Eye Specialists and the receptionist who calls to make the appointments always argues that she can't accommodate a 3 pm appointment, even though it's available, because she hasn't gotten to that time slot yet. What poor customer service!!! To top it off, she gets mouthy too!! Such poor customer service; absolutely appalling. read more

I've been coming here for few years with dad, due to his eye issues and this place is not all that great with respect to their work, they tend to keep the patient on the "keep coming back" cycle to cash in on each visit from the visit fees and he hasn't seen much improvement with his eyes. I'm not blaming this clicking for his vision or lack of treatment but what I am saying is that this place seems to be more concerned with scheduling more visits to charge the fee to the client vs curing them... just my opinion. read more

I was given a referral to this place only to have my appointment either changed or cancelled no joke a total of 5 times for numerous reasons-an no not even half of those were due to Covid. The last cancellation I had a flipped because all these times making arrangements for my newborn and work situation is such an effort and can be difficult and there is no care on their end for all the times changes are made to appointments. I'm so glad we found Dr. Lam. Many doctors have turned down my Mom because her case is so severe, Dr. Lam and her staff immediately said they would find a way to help. They made custom lenses for her and she just had her second eye done and the difference is already incredible. For the first time in her life she's not legally blind anymore! Its already made a difference, actually being able to see me and the things around her, and she's walking without a cane. I'm so grateful, I highly recommend Dr. Lam. read more

I would like to thank Jenna Cranmer for conducting a thorough eye exam on me a few days ago. I really appreciated her patience and honest opinion. I thought I needed a pair of special prism eyeglasses to help align the eye but Jenna told me I did not need them. My husband and I were relieved. We were very worried about my eyes after a dentist injected me with too much dental anesthetic (the dentist also caused me to swallow some). Not only did I experience uncontrolled movement of my right eye/eye muscle damage, I also have had very blurry vision and eye pain. I had an appointment for a specific time at the Uptown Eye Specialists in Brampton yesterday - Upon arrival, the waiting room was completely full with every seat (over 20 seats) occupied and no place to sit - When asked, the receptionist advised that the wait would be up to an hour and a half - I left of course, but I don't know what makes them think that the doctor's time is more valuable than the patient's time, but they need to stop being so greedy trying to cram in as many OHIP billings as possible, give the patient a little more respect, and focus on scheduling their appointments competently - Personally, I won't ever be back read more

Had my Dr. send over a referral for the Brampton office they called me quickly for a appointment that day I showed up and checked in then was told they have lots of people waiting so no where to sit so had to wait down stairs never called me to come up for 45 minutes then when i came up put in a room for another 35 minutes before anyone showed then was treated by probably the rudest Dr ever I had a issue with my eye always watering and redness have been treated twice by other Dr for an infection and all she said is nothing wrong come back in 4 weeks and was treated like i had the virus if you can't see people on time then shouldn't book appointments never been treated so poorly if this is there first impression on new patients I can't see why anyone goes back read more

This place is extremely unorganized place I have ever seen in terms of appointments times (10-15min past your appointment is acceptable) But an hour PLUS? Come on, that's unacceptable. The front desk have dry response and do nothing when you bring it to there attention. Create a new method or some procedure to make this more smooth. My mother went for her initial appointment for surgery (cataract removal) at Uptown Eye Specialists. Dr. Sohel Somani didn't so much as say hello on their meet, brushing off each of her very valid questions and concerns by telling her to discuss with the admin staff. He seemed very rushed and motivated to churn through the next patients as quickly as possible. He did take a second to let her know the cost of $450 which was $100 higher than she was originally led to believe the cost would be. Upon questioning...you guessed it, be brushed her out the door, and on to the admin staff again. Even the admin staff brushed off her questions, telling her to call back, and simply handed her a slip with the an appointment date. Needless to say, she left feeling very aprehensive about Dr. Somani and the clinic itself and has no intention of returning. I do not recommend them for patient management and care, as I can only imagine how the treatment would be if she required any sort of post-op care. Highly disappointed. read more
