Uptown Pilates has whipped me into shape! ... But whipped in a pleasant way. I've never been one for crazy boot camp-style workouts, but for the longest time, I thought that was the only way to get in shape. When I started complaining to a friend of mine that all of my high-impact workouts were starting to take a toll on my knees, she dragged me to Uptown Pilates on Madison. I rolled my eyes and went along with it. But I was thinking, "Really? Pilates?? Is that really a workout?" Answer: YES. IT IS. After my first session, I knew that this place was something special. It definitely worked my muscles. I certainly felt taller and less compressed. And my knees felt so much better! After just a few sessions, the discomfort in my knees went away completely. Also, my muscles have changed. I was in decent shape to begin with, but working with the instructors here has actually changed my muscles, and now they're longer and leaner. I'm pretty sure I weigh the same as when I started, and yet clothes fit differently. I'll never go back to what I was doing. I recently ventured to Uptown Pilates for the first time , I have been doing Pilates for years and was looking for a new studio that is more convenient to my home. I am always hesitant to try new studios but after seeing that they have won best of Citysearch something like 4 years in a row I figured it was worth a shot. From the beginning the experience was different than any other studio. Not only was the front desk so sweet they were super knowledgeable about Pilates and about their instructors. They asked me about my injuries and what my goals were with Pilates while I was booking my first session. At first I was annoyed that the call was taking longer than expected since I was answering these questions but the manager was so sweet is was impossible to be too annoyed. Then when I came in for my first session I realized why she had asked me these questions, my instructor had been chosen for me based off of my history and who she thought I would connect with best and they already knew about all of my injuries and goals and had prepared accordingly! It made my experience feel truly personalized to ME and made me feel so special! All in all an amazing experience! read more

I started going to Uptown a few months ago because I wanted to get a strong workout, but didn't want to join a gym. I loved my pilates studio in Seattle, and was looking for a very classical studio near my apartment. Uptown Pilates totally fits the bill. I've been taking both mat classes and the tower classes and certainly have my favorites. I love Suzanne's classes, in particular. She's a tough teacher. A friend joined me and was not into her style of teaching, but I loved it! She's like an old school ballet teacher. I like to imagine her as Debbie Allen from Fame, stick and all. It's a more intense workout, because she doesn't let you get away with poor form. I think my friend was expecting a more holistic, yoga-type approach to pilates, and there are certainly teachers with that soothing style. But pilates is about discipline and core strength, so I prefer the more intense teachers. Pilates is perfect for helping me living in NY. I get to stretch out, breathe deeply, and work my body. I heart Uptown Pilates!! These gals know exactly what to do to make you sore. And it's a good kind of sore. It's really fun! I had three classes with Kelly, one class with Victoria and two classes with Yael. All of them were tough but sooo enjoyable in their own teaching styles and personalities. The instructors are super knowledgeable and correct your form when doing the exercises so you get the maximum benefit from the moves. Heck! I was sore DURING my first session in the class! Plus, with the late/no-show fee, it motivates you to get to class and on time. I love the friendliness of the people, the small class sizes, and the comfortableness of the environment. I don't feel out-of-place at all. There aren't many men, but I don't think that should discourage males from trying this out. This is very comparable to weight training. The workouts are fun and they usually go by fast, even though it's about an hour long. The space is also gorgeous. I would recommend Uptown Pilates to everyone! read more

At first I was pretty intimidated by this studio! Everyone seemed to really know what they were doing and it was a little pricey for me. The money is worth it, though, trust me! I was shocked to find that by my second visit I was already getting the hang of classical Pilates and enjoying myself as well. The front desk staff really helped me not to be nervous about starting a new form of exercise and were really helpful with my questions about Pilates. I just switched from private lessons to group classes and I love them, too! The group atmosphere and the amazing a motivating teachers are just what I needed. Love love LOVE THIS STUDIO!!!! I came in looking for a change from my normal work out routine and boy did I get one! My private session was catered to my specific goals and the instructor was able to work around my shoulder injury, it was love at first work out! After a few sessions my posture improved, my back and shoulder pain were gone, and I was starting to see some real muscle definition. Now I come in twice a week for one private session and one group class to keep myself in tip top shape, I have never looked and felt better! Thank you Uptown Pilates!!! read more

I'm pretty happy with my experience at uptown pilates. I came in for a mat class and really enjoined working with the instructor. The class was pretty small (which i heard is normal for this time of year) and i got lots of corrections and I understood the cues that were given. Since i didnt have a whole lot of experience in pilates i was happy that it was within my abilities but still challenging. a little expensive but i suppose thats nyc and judging by how many happy people were there it must not usually be an issue. Whoa, too bad the last person to review had such a bad experience her first time. I'm glad they found someone who worked for them, because in my opinion, Uptown Pilates really is the best. I've never experience anything less than stellar instruction here. I've taken from several instructors at both their UES and UWS location, and they've all been wonderful! I always learn something new and I always get a good workout. Not to mention, its a very pleasant environment. Always clean, and everyone is always friendly. Love it! read more

Uptown Pilates is my home away from home. I have been coming to Uptown Pilates for the past three years now and I can honestly say I don't know what I would do without this place. NYC is a hectic and stressful place to live and it is such a relief to have a wonderful haven to come to at the end of the day three days a week to work on myself. I have been coming to Uptown Pilates on Madison for almost a year and just started coming to the Westside location. I love how airy the studio is, how bright the front staff is (smart and friendly!) and how knowledgeable and passionate the instructors are. Uptown Pilates has two locations. One on the UES and one on the UWS. I go to both studios once a week because I am on the WS on Tuesdays for work and then the ES on Thursdays for school. I have been going to these two studios for about two months now and I have noticed a difference already. I have sciatica and Pilates has relieved the pain tremendously. I also have much better posture and toned arms, legs and stomach. Oh! and my butt has become more "lifted" which is a major plus too :) read more

My husband and I both have been loyal Uptown Pilates clients for the past 2 years. This summer the owner, Mika, opened her third studio in Sag Harbor! We are thrilled that she decided to expand Uptown Pilates to include the Hamptons! Wow, Im still on an endorphin high from my class at Uptown pilates today! I came in and was greeted by a a sweet young lady (Jess I think?) and shown around the studio. very nice facility/machines! This is the best place to get a FANTASIC pilates work out!!!! The studio is Immaculate and the instructors are top rate. I love going there after a hard work day. They really treat you well!!!!! Love this place for a tough workout. The space is really clean and the staff is super friendly. I started by going to one Pilates class once a week and I'm so addicted to this place I've upped my workout to 3 x a week!
