    Two Urban Alchemy helpers

Urban Alchemy is always there to help. This morning these guys sprang into action to help a cyclist who wiped out in busy traffic on Market Street. Urban Alchemy makes our community stronger, safer, kinder, and more compassionate. Look for the helpers and you'll find Urban Alchemy!

I never thought I'd see this corridor clean!

Wow - the neighborhood is totally transformed! I saw friendly Urban Alchemy guides everywhere today and no drugs or unsanitary behavior. The 7th street area around the Civic Center Bart station felt safe and clean. Amazing! It gives me hope for other parts of the city.

Music, dancing and fun on Thursday nights at 6th and Stevenson.

Yelp isn't your personal grievance diary and taking a public swing at a longtime employee says more about you than it does about her. If you genuinely felt wronged, the adult move is to address it with management directly. As a person of color myself, tossing around accusations like racism in a review without substance isn't advocacy--what it is, is lazy, flippant and overreach. As for the store itself: Salvation Army Thrift Store continues to do what it's always done--support people who actually need it. Yes, prices may be up slightly (I only thrift clothes and shoes so increase is between $1-$5 across the levels), but they're still well below most local thrift competitors, and the mission behind the register matters. As a side note, the new rewards program is a great new added incentive! The Valencia team shows up, works hard, and treats people with respect. If that's not enough, no one's forcing you to shop here--feel free to take your expectations (and attitude) elsewhere.

We were not aware they did not accept shoes back, which is totally fine, but before knowing that, my friend had went to the register first asking for the return and the employee said their manager could help with that. A younger woman, who was the manager had came and helped her with the process, giving back $30 in store credit, so we still had no idea they had this "no shoe-return policy." I went next with a different cashier asking for a return as well and once they had saw I was returning boots, they had told me they do not take back shoes. I was confused and stated that my friend just gave theirs back a second ago and they still said no. The manager from earlier had came back overhearing the conversation, and realized she made a mistake. She was behind the 2 girls telling me the policy and tried to mouth she did not know and made a slashing motion to maybe have me deny my friend had gotten the store credit back from HER mistake. I wasn't sure what she wanted me to say, so I stated again, my friend just gave her shoes back. The manager then went on to RAISE her voice at me from behind the ladies, saying "Why would you do that" very rudely, and that I saw her saying she did not know. She said we were both somehow in hot water and placed a blame on me. I do not know if her goal was to embarrass me and my friends or have me be in the wrong, but that definitely caught me off guard. Mind you, I did not point to her or single her out saying she was the one who helped my friend, I was genuinely just confused. If this is how they train their management to respond to mistakes or events they should have been fully accountable for regarding a mistake THEY made, I will not be returning. Employees--especially managers--should have a clear understanding of company policies and communicate clearly and professionally. Speaking to young women in a public and such disrespectful manner is unacceptable and ruined our entire experience.

How hard could that be to find? Er, really hard. I resorted to GPS which dead-ended me at the Post Office loading dock. Finally, I thought to call them and the recording sent me upstairs between Walgreens & Safeway. Who knew?! Absolutely zero signage. Mystery staircase, walkway, boarded up windows- hark, a faded logo on a locked door. I almost left, but then noticed a black garbage can with a clipboard on top. Leave your email & they'll send you a receipt. Sigh. I wanted to know if they also take shampoo, took a chance & left it along with a warm down jacket. Like I said, the jacket has a small hole, & nobody I spoke to wanted it, so it was either find a cold street person or hope the jacket will go to a good home. So, I give these angels 4 stars for the good work they do- assuming it's everything listed on their website. Minus 1 star for zero visibility from the street level. A sign or two would certainly bring them much more donations.
