I set up a casting lesson for my wife in I in anticipation of a fishing trip to Montana in several weeks. Jon (the founder) gives an incredible lesson. My wife has never even held a rod before, and within minutes her casting was on point. I haven't cast in 20 years, and he had me going in just a few minutes as well. We feel confident and fully prepared for our upcoming days of fishing. Jon is thorough, and breaks down all of the equipment, mechanics, and physics in a few minutes so you understand the cast, rather than just learn a single way of doing it, and gives a fun lesson on how to cast, with more than enough practice time. Also.... Jon is a really great guy. Nice person to spend some time with, friendly and personable. The lesson was worth every penny and we will be loyal customers of his shop going forward. I even recommended him to a coworker this morning for him and his son and a bone fishing trip they want to go on. read more

I walked 10 blocks to go check out this place. I pressed the buzzer when I got there and someone let me in. Then when I went upstairs, I literally couldn't figure out how to get in. I then tried the elevator and couldn't get to the second floor without a key. Super confusing business model - I finally gave up and left. Urban Angler is the place to go if you're a fly-fisherman or fly-fisherwoman in exile in NYC. Located on the west side of Madison Square Park, UA is Manhattan's local fly shop. The first time I walked in I was new to the fishing scene here and was in dire need of information, not necessarily gear. The guys in the store were super cool and very willing to share some of their secrets, for example where to fish. (In the interest of full disclosure, I am still waiting to catch my first striped bass, or striper, on a fly, having spent countless hours and making thousands of casts). The shop occupies a second-floor space with wood floors overlooking Fifth Avenue. When you're getting ready to go fishing, UA can set you up with flies or materials for tying your own, as well as lines and tippets. The store also stocks a nice selection of rods and reels along with waders, jackets, shoes and clothing. In fact, it's one of the only places in NYC where you can find gear made by Cloudveil, the Jackson Hole-based outdoor apparel company. Unlike other fly shops around the country, located on the banks of streams in Montana or Colorado or Oregon, Urban Anglers is set in the urban jungle. But it does a very honorable job of keeping the spirit alive for both diehards and newbies. read more

Great fly fishing store right near shake shack! This place has quite a bit more of a selection versus "the other fishing shop in the city" That said, the staff is really knowledgeable, and if you let them know where you are headed they'll check and see what's hatching in the area and set you up with a good box of flies for your adventure. And their rod selection seemed to be well composed with Sage, Loomis, and a few other noteable makers, although only the higher end offering from each maker was in stock on the shelf. ($350-$750ish) Cons: as would be expected the prices are higher that what you would see at say Fur Fin and Feather up north, but hey its the city, and everything costs more here, why would this be any different... Personally, I wouldn't go here to outfit myself with a full rig, but to just grab some flies or last minute additions needed for a quick fishing trip its great. read more

I managed to squeeze this place into my last day in NYC and I'm glad I did. I procured some mighty useful information on the local fishing. Come to find out, there's quite a bit of excellent saltwater and freshwater fishing in relatively close proximity to Gotham. If I hadn't gotten some great insider info, I'd have never found this place. It's pretty easy to miss things in Manhattan. Anyway, The gear looked pretty solid. Abel and Tibor reels. Sage and G. Loomis rods. Fishpond and Simms clothing and paraphenalia. There's more on offer but you get the point if you already know anything about fly fishing gear. SInce i just started Yelping i figured i would give "Props" (for lack of a better word) to the guys at Urban Angler. This review is over 17yrs in the making. I first walked into UA in 1995. As a novice fly fisherman one could imagine i had plenty of questions. The guys at UA where always very informative and super friendly. They outfitted me for my first trip to Patagonia. Although i haven't seen David in a few years i always see Edwin and Tonys friendly faces when come into the shop. Bare none, you guys are the best. I walked in here today and experienced the worst customer service in a long while. The two dudes working were talking to each other at the far end of the shop and didn't even make an attempt to help me with what I was looking for. I just wish the atmosphere was a little friendlier. Aside from that, the store carries a ton of high-end product that is unattainable elsewhere in the city. read more

Recently bought a Sage fly rod and after my second time noticed the tip was broken. Brought it back to them and the person said I had to pay $75 to get it fixed even though it was only a month old. The guy was totally unhelpful and really didn't seem to care. I told him it should be under warranty and that they should call Sage and have them take it in to fix for free. He said it's Sage's policy to charge $75 no matter what to fix something even if it was a defective product. Guess what, I called Sage and got a totally different response from them! I've bought a few other fly rods, all from Orvis. When my Helios 2 was damaged, the Orvis employee was helpful and went out of his way to make sure that they fixed the damaged rod. Don't waste your time or money at this store. If I'm paying top money for a premium product, I expect great customer service not a useless employee who acts like he can't be bothered! read more

Had a great buying experience here just now. The guys were all super friendly and casual. I'm new to fly fishing and it was very much apparent from the second I walked in I'm sure, but they made me feel right at home! It is a little tricky at first figuring out how to get to the actual store because there is no store front and you have to be buzzed in. That also kind of made the whole experience that much sweeter though! Good vibes, very good vibes. read more

Worst customer service ever. I always thought Orvis was somewhat high end and sometimes full of snobs, but after visiting Urban Angler, Orvis has the more friendly staff. The two people behind the counter at Urban Angler on a random weekday afternoon were complete jerks. They either ignored me or snickered when I asked questions. I am relatively new to fly fishing and they offered zero help and one just surfed the internet the entire time. I was ready to spend $1,000+ on new setup of rods, reel, bags... But I ended up spending $15 and getting out of there. I couldn't tell if they hated jobs or the two individuals were just generally rude and slimeballs on a personal level. I can't even say they were snobby. Maybe I was interrupting their pornography time, but why would they work in a fly fishing store with no interest in fly fishing? Why work in retail with no interest in consumer service? I will never visit this store again. read more

These people have a condescending and dismissive attitude. I have visited Urban Angler two times in the past month looking for presents and information about NYC area fishing. Once, I was alone and once I was with a fisherman friend. It was as though we were in their way; they answered our questions either dismissively or sarcastically. With the store being on the second floor, and already a challenge to get to, I was expecting the positive experience described in the earlier reviews. Maybe they have a new staff since several people wrote that they were "informative and super friendly." The staff we encountered was rude, sarcastic, and just looked utterly bored. Do not go here unless you want to leave feeling abused and irritated. read more

The worst "service" ever! Don't bother wasting your time there. I went there today to buy a fishing license for fly-fishing in NY state. I walked into the store, there was 1 guy helping a couple of tourists, 1 guy standing around, and 2 others putting rods in a display case. I waited at the front checkout/service desk. No one bothered to come over and help. Finally I had to ask for help. When I explained I wanted to pick up a license the small guy with an accent said I'd have to wait until they were done with the other customes (all 2 of them for 4 staff to handle), and that they didn't make any money on the licenses. All I wanted was a license so I can go fly-fishing, and perhaps would even buy something in their store. They couldn't be bothered to help me. One guy who I've got a license from there previously even told me he doesn't handle the licenses, an absolute lie. I left in complete and utter disgust from a shop that should be all too happy to help a fellow fly-fisher get a license and continue to support the sport that they owe their business to. I will never, ever spend another $ there, and will now buy my licenses and whatever else I need from Orvis. read more
