I own an older modified 1996 Jeep. I love my Jeep but dread the maintenance and repairs required. And if it's a transmission repair, my mechanic feels the same way. I can't begin to say how awesome this place is! I came in because my transmission light came on and off and of course I was scared because it was the first time since replacing my TCM for a wires few years ago. They did a diagnostic and determined it was the TCM again. What surprised me was the cost (and price included a warranty) compared to the last time. I have a mercury mountaineer 2008 and what you don't want happening did. My transmission blew and needed to have it rebuilt. Sals transmissions was the closest place I manages to drive it to. They where very professional and explained everything that was wrong with the car. Fixed everything that was wrong with the mountaineer and its running great. I'd recommend them to anyone. February 2015, Car was towed in for clutch repair. Was provided an acceptable lead-time (2-3 days) for completion. The replacement clutch did not fit correctly, so needed more time to obtain the correct size from his "clutch guy". No problem, things happen, we wait another few days to finally receive the car back. . Total (1/2) Repair: $1,550 / Rental Car: $175 / Time: 7 days December 2015, follow up to this repair, in less than one year, the clutch starts slipping. Keep in mind that for almost (2) months since the clutch replacement, the car was in Sals possession for another repair. See review 2/2. January 2016, took the car in and presented a car with a slipping clutch. He tells me that he cannot account for how I drive which is was the root of the problem for the clutch slipping. Sal provided a quote for the repair which was more than what he originally charged. At this point, I was offended since I have been only been driving manual well over 15 years. At this point, in addition to other repair issues (see other post), I have decided to walk away and have the car repaired at another shop. The other shop looked at the clutch and found out that there was a LEAK IN THE REAR MAIN SEAL which coated the disc and caused it to die prematurely.. (Not Sals) Total Cost: Less than $1,000 Rental Car: $0 / Time: 2 days) REVIEW 2/2 - This is the 2nd one, this service was completed with the notion that we were happy with the 1st clutch repair service. April 6, 2015, Car was taken in for rough idle and intermittent stalling when coming to a stop. Took a full week for them to finally diagnose the problem: Faulty intake/exhaust valves. Was provided 1.5~2-week lead-time. + 2 weeks - Car not repaired, Can't recount the many possible reasons that were causing the delay with the repair. "The car will be put back together and ready for a test drive tomorrow" seems to be a common phrase that I heard. + 1 week - Car still not repaired, now they can't figure out why it was causing an issue. With constant phone calls back and forth about when I can pick up the car, they found out after completing the pressure test that the valves were not machined within tolerance by their "engine guy". Since they required to obtain a separate head altogether, it would take another week to have it all finished. + 1 week - Engine is still not completely in. No other comment... May 14 2015, Alas, the car is finally completed. My hands were tied this whole time and finally I get the car. Sal Jr. and I both saw eye to eye since not all of the complications were caused by their shop. In good faith, he offered a free follow-up oil change and I accepted. The car drives great. Repair: $1,450 / Rental Car: $1,100 / Time: 38 days A. This is where it starts to get a little dicey. Within a week later, the car started to overheat. The idle started to get worse and stalling still occurs while the A/C didn't work. One Saturday evening, the car started to smoke, on the freeway, we get off and pull into a gas station, and the radiator spewing hot water out. We get the car towed to the shop and have parked in front of the shop for Monday morning. B. Sal found the problem and fixed the issue in a couple days no questions asked. I'm trying to move on with my life and drove off. C. +1 week - The A/C is not operating on a hot day and the car is experiencing some electrical problems. The headlights along with cigarette lighter is not operating properly so I take it in to Sal once again. At this point when we are looking at the engine bay, i point out that the car doesn't even have an intake duct. The car is left with him and later that day, Sal admitted that one of his mechanics hid the fact that he had broken it earlier. Sal took responsibility and had ordered the replacement part. To close this review up, the car was finally returned to us running, electrical good, A/C cold. I will leave out the other repairsI needed to complete post Sal's repair, since it is only arguable related to their service. I commend Sal Jr. for sticking it through and doing the right thing. Sal was cordial, honest, and understanding of the situation, but this review is based on the shops professional ability to reliably repair a vehicle in a timely manner which they have clearly failed to do so. Needed a new gas tank installed. Called to have them look at the tank I purchased to make sure it was the correct one. Lucky for me they checked and it was the right one. They told me to bring it in the next day because they had no lifts available that day. Returned the next day and they had it ready in 2 hours. They were really nice and they refilled the new tank. Let me first say, I waited for the one month follow up for my GMC Yukon, that Mike the manager scheduled for me to bring and have checked to write this review. On June 16, 2017 I took my 2013 GMC Yukon XL to Sal's Transmission to get a second opinion after going to one of their competitors, who by the way also came with high ratings, but quoted me a price strictly from my verbal complaint, and did not so much as look at my truck, or even test drive it. When I arrived at Sal's, I went in, and was approached by one of the techs. I told him that I was here to get my truck's tranny checked out. He asked me was the problem. I explained the issue, and he said they would take it for a test drive, and let me know what's going on. After the test drive, I was called into the office by Mike the manager, who was very friendly. He told me that my tranny needed to be rebuilt. He explained the process, and then introduced me to Sal Jr. Sal told me that he recognized that I have TLC plates, and said he knows that I need my truck for work. I said yes I'm an Uber driver. He then said he understood my situation. I felt relieved that he understood my plight. I asked him how much, and how long will it take to get my truck back on the road. He said he'll need it for a couple of days, and before I left it, he wanted to make a call to a supplier to see if he could get a part to complete the rebuild. After a quick phone call, he told me that the part was back ordered and should be at his shop in about a day or so, and told me he would call me as soon as the part came in. He mentioned that there may be a computer issue hat would cost me an additional $1000. But when he did some further diagnosis on my truck, he realized I wouldn't need that repair. He also said that I should be fine for a couple of days driving my truck while we waited for the part to come in. So I left, and about an hour after, I get a phone call from Sal telling me they were able to locate the part needed to rebuild the tranny, and I should bring I truck in asap. I dropped it off on Thursday, expecting not seeing it by Monday for the earliest. I got a phone call from Sal the next day on Friday telling me that my truck was ready. I must say, I was pleasantly surprised that it was ready so soon. I went there, he took me on a test drive to show that the tranny was in fact repaired. I paid him, went back to work that day. I went back today(30 days later), did the follow up check on the tranny, and got the all clear. Sal and his crew were very professional, and extremely helpful. There is so much more I can say about their service. But I felt this review was already long winded. All I have to say is, if you have an issue with your transmission you just need to go, and experience for yourself what I and all of the other reviewers experienced at Sal's transmission, excellent service. read more

They even paid for the tow from my house to the shop which was great even tho I have AAA and would of used them anyway. They were great in communicating with me exactly what was going to happen & how long it was going to take. Since it was close to my job it was VERY convenient for me. This place used to be great. I brought my car here in October 2014 for a new transmission and they were wonderful. Came back to have it checked after 30 days, no problem. Had a slight leak, brought it back they took me right in, fixed it (bad washer) and I was on my way. Now to today. I drive to Sal's only to find that they are no longer at the old location. They're now located about a mile and half away. Ok, no biggie. So get to the new location at 8:25 and tell them I need to have it checked again because there's more leaking. The owner takes it for a ride, tells me it feels ok but wants to check it. Ok great, give me a few minutes he says. It's now 10:27am and I'm STILL sitting here waiting for my car to be looked at. I don't know if it's because the younger owner isn't in today but this is awful. Once the warranty is up here, I'll be happy to not have to deal with this again. read more

I went to Sal's for the first time because of a referral from a friend. In 2014 I needed to repair my water pump. I was at PepBoys when I called Sal desperate, because PB wanted to charge me $800 for the repair, which I thought it was outrageous. Sal not only took care of my car that time, for almost half the price of that. The staff is friendly and treats you like family. After bringing my car with an obvious transmission problem to another place a friend told me about Sal's Transmission and the positive experience he has had with them, as opposed to the other transmission shops that have a national presence or those that market aggressively locally (including the one where I was a having a fairly bad experience with). I had one breakdown immediately after the other place fixed my transmission. After they got it running again I noticed fluid leaking from under my car the next morning. So I decided to call Sal's. I explained the situation to Sal and he suggested I bring the car right over. He put it on the lift, looked it over, and immediately diagnosed the problems and offered to fix the shoddy repair for a very reasonable price. It's a family run shop and I have had many great experiences with Sal Jr. He is a real car guy at heart, loves to talk shop while working and really puts his passion into the work. I definitely recommend seeing him for your needs. I once realized I was losing a lot of turbo boost pressure while driving (especially over 25 mph). Sal Jr, did the right thing and figured out that the piping from the charge pipe to the intercooler had popped off and simply reinstalled it. Definitely an honest mechanic. read more

Very bad service , from the minute I walked in they told me transmission is bad , he charged me for diagnostic fee 100$ . The mechanic told me I need to pay 2,200 for new transmission plus fix my Chrysler computer another 2,000 total of 4,000$. I took my car somewhere else he added new transmission oil , new air filter and fixed my check engine for 450$. No thank you don't recommend ! read more

Honorable, knowledgeable, skilled, accommodating and friendly. Sal Junior is every bit the gracious helpful and consummate professional as his distinguished gentleman father. It's been seven years since they let me keep my car parked in their shop for a week, while I debated whether or not it was worthwhile to completely replace the engine. I double checked the price I was quoted for the part by calling the manufacturer and they told me the exact same amount, to the dime. I decided to let them do it and I haven't had a single major problem, yet. The warranty was three years or one hundred thousand miles. I haven't come close to the hundred thousand miles yet, but again, it's been seven years without any trouble. They're still always there to help, without hesitation. Whenever I've come to them for minor things, they've walked the extra twenty seven miles to make sure I had whatever I needed. If you pass another shop within a block or two, as there are a few, keep walking or driving until you see the sign, Sal's Transmission. This is titled "Better not call Sal" In November 2013 I bought a used 2004 Honda Accord sedan. This was a great car it was powerful and yet comfortable and quiet when driving. The fact that this car was quiet had me sold but nearly two years after purchasing it I'm driving home to reverse into my spot and the car doesn't reverse. Oh the horror. I had to get out and push it into the parking spot. Being a former mechanic I realized the transmission was gone so I started looking around for a place to fix it. I don't know why I chose this place considering it's very far from my house but I did. The car had no reverse gear but it was drivable so I took it to Sa'ls Transmission. The quote to rebuild my transmission was $1750. That's a lot of money to spend so I was hoping perfection on behalf of Sal Jr and his crew. A few days later I get a call the transmission has been rebuilt but I need motor mounts according to Sal. Mind you I said this car was very quiet meaning there were no shakes or crazy noises coming from the car. When it comes to parts that require a lot of work I learned from being a former mechanic to use dealer parts that way you know they will fit and work properly and you don't have to do the work again. Also these mounts added more money to the bill. So I get to the shop and I paid him I take my car and it's shaking like a wet dog left out in the cold. I drive back to Sal Jr and tell him my car didn't run like this before his excuse is it's a hydraulic mount and it will take a week to seat itself. I listened to his advice since I've been out of the mechanic business for a while maybe things have change. In addition a check engine light came on. This never happened before. I told Sal and he cleared the code. Although this wasn't just an anomaly it was something they screwed up. Later I found out I had two bad oxygen sensors. The first month with my car back from the shop the starter just died completely. I couldn't understand this at all. It left me completely baffled I started my car time and time again without the slightest hesitation and now no start. Everyday during this week I started the car and it was shaking so I called Sal and let him know he was very nice and told me to bring it in he'll look at it. I spent about two hours there then he said he'll replace the new mount. He says it needs to seat itself again so here we go I'm driving and it shaking again. As a side note I get very irritated when any type of noise is coming from my car. So I drive it for a week and no change. Again another Saturday at Sal's they are looking at the engine and they say they are adjusting the mount and again I drive off and the engine is shaking. I can't remember how many times I brought my car there or left it overnight but this really irritated me to a point where I saw they didn't know what they were doing. So I didn't bother anymore. As mention earlier I change then oxygen sensors just in time to get an inspection sticker but the engine was still shaking. I hated my car. I hated every time I started the engine and it shook. I wanted to get rid of this car for this sole purpose. A few weeks ago I took a road trip to Maryland to visit my dad and I realize I really hate this car I wanted to get rid of it but to find a good car takes time and I still wanted to drive. So I looked online and saw the original Honda motor mounts and ordered them. At this point I didn't trust any mechanic so I grabbed the old work pants and shirt and tools and proceeded to replace my motor mounts. When working on it I noticed that one bolt that was in the center of the motor was extremely tight. This I had a hard time removing. My guess is each time I took it into the shop the tighten it more thinking this would fix it. Instead it broke the mount resulting in even worse vibrations. So finally I got the mount out and the new one in I started the car and low and behold this car is running and it's not shaking the only thing I can hear are the injectors ticking away. Inside it was a dream to no longer have the vibrating feature in my car. So Sal Transmission if I could give you zero stars I would. I paid full price. I never asked for a discount and yet you mugged me with shoddy work. Avoid this shop like the plague. Great shop, completely professional, very clean and well decorated waiting room. I went there with my car and they repaired a leak with my transmission line for a fraction of the cost most repair shops were quoting me. They do work like this everyday, regular repair shops just know how to order parts and attempt to swap out. At Sals they fixed the part on the car, made sure there were no leaks anywhere else once they were done and test drove the car to made sure all was good. There number is saved on my phone. read more

Sometimes it's not the transmission. We had an experience with our family car slipping and stalling and getting stuck. We got stranded right off the Belt Parkway and had it towed to Sal's Transmissions which was recommended by a friend. We expected the worse and a big bill. Took my daughter's car here at the recommendation of my regular mechanic. The engine light was on due to some transmission sensor. They replaced the sensor and the engine light came back on the next day. I brought the car back and they replaced the sensor again and we haven't had a problem since.
