Great selection of salads, soups and sandwiches. I couldn't decide on what sandwich so the server suggested half of one and half of another. Excellent idea. Great cuban as well as their version of a Philly cheesesteak. Nice, relaxed and comfortable environment. You do order at counter but staff will bring food to table.

This location recently catered a luncheon for me for my school. I wanted a healthier option since we were celebrating American Heart Month. Urban Cookhouse was one of the 1st businesses I thought about. It's local (this location is where it all started), and it's delicious, so it was a great choice. My coworkers raved about how good the food was, especially the smoked turkey. The food was delivered on time and everything was flawless. Thanks for another great meal, Urban Cookhouse!

It's crazy that I haven't been to Urban Cookhouse in FIVE years! Boy , am I glad I popped in recently for dinner. I appreciated the dedicated customer parking in the rear of the restaurant. Street parking is also an option. This location is really clean and decorated nicely. They highlight local farmers, etc. it's great!! The staff presented themselves in a helpful and friendly manner. For my meal, I ordered lime marinated steak with rice; it comes with a garden salad and a delicious orange roll. I always enjoyed this healthier option meal in the past. I did have to add a little salt to liven up that beef a bit but otherwise this was a tasty meal with generous portions. I have to visit UC more because they are serving up DELICIOUS farm to fire to table food. Tip: they have a drive thru at this location

A perfect spot for a quick, affordable lunch or dinner in downtown Homewood! Urban Cookhouse locally sources lots of its produce- way to support local farmers! Their menu features sandwiches, wraps, plates, salads, and soups. There's something on the menu for everyone here. Several of the menu items have a Southern flair, containing items like chicken salad, broccoli salad, orange rolls, mac and cheese, and a variety of smoked meats. I ordered the half Turkey Crunch sandwich with the half Berry Good salad. I love it when restaurants have a "pick two" option, allowing me to try more items off of the menu! The Turkey Crunch was delicious and the salad was very fresh. It was the perfect portion for lunch. There's plenty of seating inside, it's always clean, the workers are friendly, prices are reasonable, and the food comes out fairly quickly. I've eaten at Urban Cookhouse a few times before and I will gladly keep returning.

Food is always great. Sometimes when I order takeout the portion sizes are smaller but still delicious.

Go to lunch spot! Perfect for a drive through healthy option or easy sit down meal. My go to is half/half with pepper patch and buffalo chicken wrap. The only negative is an orange roll doesn't come with my meal!! The staff is always so nice.

I always enjoy Urban Cookhouse. I recently met up with some friends for lunch and it did not disappoint. The parking lot can get a little crowded. So my lunch group met around 11:30 and I was able to find parking in the parking lot on the backside of the building by the drive thru. Service was great and it took less than 10 minutes for my food to come out after ordering, even though it started to get a bit crowded. I had the line marinated steak plate with salad, rice and orange roll. It was delicious and the steak was tender. I also like that they are really careful about my shellfish allergy, since they do have some seafood items. Urban Cookhouse is a regular place that is in rotation for lunch.

Super great food options and the servers are all great here. They are kind when you're deciding your order at the counter and they're helpful too. Then they serve your order quickly and the food is super yummy too. The layout of this place is really nice too and the seats are comfortable too. It is nice and clean in here too.

I tried this chain when visiting Tuscaloosa. Since then this is where I like to eat when visiting Alabama for work. I kept seeing reviews about these orange rolls..I bought one and ate it on my drive back to the hotel like a savage. I was so close to turning around and getting 4 more..when I visited this location, I made sure to get a basket of them...I know...I will never lose my Lil gut eating these things. That berry Salad is a must! Ingredients are always so fresh and the dressing is amazing! The grilled chicken sandwich is simple goodness at its best. Great go to for a fresh, fulfilling meal.

Urban Cookhouse is connected to the Farm Fresh juice bar in downtown Homewood. There's plenty of free street parking in front of the restaurant, with a private lot behind the restaurant. I dined there with my family for an early dinner and we explored the menu at the counter and ordered at the counter with a friendly employee. My partner and I both ordered the Down Home Plate ($10), including ham and chicken, and two sides and a roll. We also ordered a glass of house wine for $6/each. The plate portions are pretty small, so I would recommend ordering an extra plate so you have enough food and can always take home leftovers if needed. Everything tasted very fresh and I highly recommend giving it a shot if you're in the area!

I ask the server to take the gumbo back, as we had order that as an appetizer. In a few minutes our original server brought the gumbo back to our table. I told her we had ordered that as an appetizers, the server apologized and said it had gotten "Lost in the kitchen, keep it, I'll take care of it". About the food, wife ordered salad with chicken. The salad had 4 large fried chicken tenders on it. I order the sirloin tips over rice. Overall tasty, but gravy was a little salty. Dish included some green beans as well which were tasty. Overall experience was ok, service a little slow which I don't understand with the lower population in the dining room. When I got the check, the gumbo was still on the ticket. Not sure what "I'll take care of it " meant, not what I expected. I paid for it without saying anything else. Actually it was pretty good gumbo. Paid the bill, left a good tip, as the server seemed to be running her legs off. Going back? Probably so, but it'll be a while till I do.

One of my favorite things about The Refinery is their Monday pop-ups, which feature chefs from different local restaurants and food businesses. On my most recent visit, I had the opportunity to try Flava Yaad, a local Jamaican chef bringing authentic island flavors to the table. I ordered the Pepper Shrimp, and it was delicious -- flavorful, well-seasoned, and a great introduction to the pop-up. I love when restaurants create opportunities to showcase other local culinary talent, and this is such a fun way to experience something new. The cocktail menu is another major highlight. The Wealth Espresso Martini is, without a doubt, one of the best espresso martinis I've had. It isn't always available, which can be a little disappointing, but I can appreciate that a cocktail with a more involved preparation may not be offered every day. I also enjoy the Glass Pavilion, where the menu seems to rotate somewhat seasonally, making it another reason to return and see what's new. The regular food menu is just as impressive. My personal favorites are the Grilled Chicken Miso Sandwich and the Club Croissant, both paired with the Truffle Fries. My boyfriend has enjoyed the Smash Burger and most recently tried the Shrimp and Grits during Sunday brunch. We also like to split the Caesar Salad, which is a generous portion and works well as something to share before the meal -- although we almost always have leftovers. The staff have consistently been great. I've seen different bartenders depending on the day, but everyone I've interacted with has been friendly, attentive, and welcoming. With the rotating pop-ups, creative drinks, dependable food, and consistently good service, The Refinery is becoming the kind of place where I can stop in for a cocktail, plan a meal, or try something completely new. High ceilings and exposed brick are a few of the ways to my heart. If you've seen a post about this place, you've probably seen a picture of the crackly round, artistic dish and wondered what it was. There are dumplings on the underside of it and you break each one off of the crackly part to enjoy. We did enjoy these but I would've loved a soy sauce to dip them in. They came with chili crunch, peanuts, and green onions but I wanted an actual sauce. They were very standard tasting dumplings and there was nothing extraordinary about them unfortunately. As always, we'd looked at the menu beforehand and decided what we wanted. It does state on their website that their menus can change due to freshness and availability. But we'd both decided on an app and entree we wanted only to get there and have none of them on the menu. I do appreciate a rotating menu to accommodate local items, but I would also love for those to be updated on a regular basis. So after rerouting, we decided on the chicken skewers as another app with the dumplings. These were chargrilled, flavorful, and had a nice crust on them. I got shrimp fried rice and Julia got spicy beef noodles. It was fine but I wish the shrimp wouldn't have been cut up. It felt like they chopped them up in order to not put as many in the dish. At $25 for this, I'd like whole shrimp please. There were a few pieces of raw spinach with pepper on the top. I would've loved a sauce of some kind. I would've preferred shrimp hibachi with fried rice from a Japanese place that included vegetables and sauces. This was not *bad* there was just SO much room for improvement. We both agreed that nothing was awful, but for these prices and the hype, we expected more. Our waitress was super friendly. Bonus points because they had match boxes at the host stand! There was a paid parking lot diagonal from the restaurant, so we had to walk through an intersection to get there. There are some spots up front if you can snag one. Overall, we enjoyed our time here but won't be sprinting back.

We walked up the street with a half dozen other diners. Wooden City is definitely not in the best part of BHM. Walking to the restaurant was a little sketchy, no need for a detailed description. Although we had reservations, the hostess looked at us like we had three eyes. She found a small table for us in the far back of the restaurant. No problem, at least we were seated. Our server greeted us quickly and went over the menu. We ordered drinks, blistered Hungarian peppers and a sausage and mushroom pizza. We told him that we were going to a concert and were on a little bit of a tight schedule. By the time our server checked on our food, the second time, we went from a little bit tight to full "gotta get out of here" mode. I guess the delay in getting our food was to give the kitchen time to burn our pizza. Over half of the thick, chewy crust was inedible. The bottom of the pie didn't fare much better. The peppers, on the other hand, were amazing. (not so much so at 2 am but that's just me!) They are a do not miss. We were at least able to settle our bill quickly and made it to the concert with time to spare. Overall, would we go back? Only if in the area - those peppers were amazing. Still, I definitely would not make a special trip.
