I've been going to Urban for several years now and have always appreciated my experience with them. Dr. Millsap is attentive, seems to remember me each year even though we have a single interaction a year, and thoroughly explains everything to me. His support staff are also very friendly and helpful, especially around choosing new glasses. I've been coming here for almost 10 years. Do NOT bring a fully crated and secure hypoallergenic sleeping puppy, because they will refuse to see you and waste your time. Dr. Chad is good at what he does, but this really killed it for me. I lost my 17 year old dog last month and I cannot leave this new puppy alone and I've been out of contacts. The lack of compassion for my circumstance plus "loyalty" to him despite me living an hour away -- I will be finding a new eye doctor after all of these years. Edit: I had just left an exam at my Primary Care Physician. She actually wanted to cuddle and hold my puppy. It didn't even dawn on me that this guy would have been this upset. Friendly and competent staff, but confirm if you actually want the photo alternative to dilation before agreeing to it. Dilation was covered by my insurance, the photo alternative that checked for similar things was not. I might have opted to spend more to avoid the dilation hassle, but the way it was presented to me made me think neither was covered by my insurance and this alternative method was better. Thinking back on the language that was used like "I'm sure you would be happier without having your eyes dilated today" made me feel like they were just trying to upsell me unnecessarily and they didn't want to go through the hassle of doing the eye dilation. Overall care and experience was fine as far as I could tell, but I ended up spending 4x what I needed to because I didn't understand how to opt for the method that was covered by my insurance. read more

I moved to the suburbs six years ago and yet I still travel into the city to this clinic for my frames and contact lenses. The doctors are great and so professional, even with COVID precautions things were moving like a well oiled machine at my last visit. The lady up front (I believe her name is Farrah ) was so great about helping me find cool glasses that fit my lens thickness and my face shape. I love Urban Eyecare! I am picky about my frames and think Angela makes some of the best selections in Chicago. I'm always impressed that I can find something edgier while my husband can pick something more classic all in the same shop that takes my insurance. Really appreciate that they carry a wide variety of brands from less known designers too and occasionally have trunk shows with even more variety. Dr. Millsap, as noted in other reviews, is a great doctor and very personable. I also appreciate that they offer the retinal photo scan option instead of a dilation... worth any amount to me to never get my pupils dilated again! read more

I went here back in 2018 for an exam and contacts. The eye doctor was great (which is why I gave 1 star) and overall had a great experience. Was supposed to go earlier this year but Covid happened so I reached out last week to order contacts. The receptionist, I believe her name was Angela was the RUDEST person I've talked to at a business in a long time. To make a long story short, I wanted to order the same contacts as last time. Last time Insurance covered 100% and I got a year worth of contacts. Angela tells me I'm going to have to pay since insurance only covers a certain amount. I explained last time I didn't pay anything. She cuts me off and says she will see what I got last time and see if I could get at least 9 months worth and send me an email receipt but 12 months I would have to pay extra. A short time later I get an emailed receipt for 6 months worth of contacts. I call her back questioning why I only get 6 months when last time my insurance covered a year worth of contacts...By the way, my insurance hasn't changed since the last time I got my contacts at this place. She then tells me that I was charged for a different brand of contacts that was fully covered by my insurance and I didn't have to pay anything extra and pretty much said I benefited from their mistake because I got a better contact and didn't have to pay extra for it. She said someone else charge me incorrectly last time but when I looked at the receipt from 2018, her name was on it . I told her I never pay for contacts and usually my insurance cover 100% for 12 months and that I didn't want the 6 months supply that she charged me for, she then proceeded to say she will cancel it and send my RX for contacts via email. She rudely told me any place I take it to won't take an expired RX. Listen, I will gladly start all over at a new place than to deal with this unprofessional lady over the phone. Edit: After reading older reviews it seems like I'm not the only one who has something to say about the receptionist. How unfortunate because I really liked the eye doctor. But when you're cold and rude over the phone and I literally met you once, you're done in my book. read more

5-star bump! Mommy, I broke my glasses. How many times have you heard that?!? Oh, probably only once, when your little brother broke his glasses jumping a dirt bike over a few of the neighbor kids when you were 10. After I broke my glasses, I felt like a 10-year old, walking into Urban Eyecare with my jacked up frames, asking for forgiveness. The UE employees swiped up the frames from my hand, and didn't bat a four-eye! The glasses were under warranty, they asked my name, and didn't even ask for my phone number. I came in for an eye exam and a new pair of glasses yesterday. I haven't gotten glasses in six years because I always have to use my insurance coverage to opt for contacts, so it was a special occasion for me. I wanted to choose a shop somewhere in the middle of the road that had fashionable, independently branded frames without costing an arm and a leg - and Urban Eyecare was just what I was looking for! I was pleasantly surprised by how reasonably priced everything was while still being completely on-trend. I showed up really early for my appointment anticipating to wander around looking at frames, but the doctor was able to take me right away. Dr. Millsap was funny, friendly, and answered all of my questions about my eye health. The only reason I'm not giving Urban Eyecare five stars is that I felt rushed by the optician to pick a frame and get out of there. Glasses change your face and are a big investment, so I tried not to feel bad taking my time to decide and ask for her opinion. I also felt like my questions regarding insurance coverage were brushed off so she could get to the next patient. All in all, it was a good experience but I'm not sure I'll be making this place my go-to eye doctor. UPDATE: Angela reached out to me shortly after my posting this review to apologize if I felt rushed, and offered to put my order on hold if I needed more time to shop or talk about my insurance plan. This place is terrific! I used to live in wicker park and moved to the far northern suburbs near Lake Zurich. I tried a few places up around Lake Zurich which were very good but definitely no match for Urban Eyecare! It is definitely worth my commute to go to Urban Eyecare. Dr millsap does an excellent job with the exam. I also really like that the office stays up with new technology. Sarah and Angela both do a superb job in helping find the perfect glasses for you! They are both attentive and give excellent suggestions what is right for you! Finally the selection of frames this office has I have seen nowhere else! It is great! I've been coming here for a few years. I love dr Todd milsap. He helped me a few years ago when I had severely scratched corneas. I decided to come back yesterday for the glasses exam needed to get new glasses. I told them this when I called to schedule my appointment as well. I also was 20 minutes late to my appointment due to traffic and they honored my appointment which I really appreciated as well. Yesterday I saw dr. Stacie Lynn instead of Todd milsap. She did the normal eye exam which I believe is needed for an eye glasses prescription. Then she started asking me about my contact lense usage which was strange to me (since contact lenses were not the reason for my appointment) but I figured maybe she trying to get more eye history from me. She also gave me contact lenses to try out. My issues is as I went to "checkout" and pay for my visit not only was I charged for An eye glasses exams but I was charged for a contact lenses exam. I had no need for a contact lense exam as I do not need to order contacts. so, I had to pay $50 dollars for something I did not need and did not ask for. UPDATE: I was contacted by Angela the office manager once this review was received and read by their office. She was very sympathetic and understanding of the issue I had. She said I received and was charged for a contact lenses exam due to a miscommunication and made it right by refunding that portion back to me. I am very impressed by their customer service and how much they care to make issues right. read more

Before visiting Urban Eyecare, I went to Minute Clinic to get an antibiotic. After a few days, the antibiotic didn't seem to work at all. I visited Urban Eyecare, and Dr. Millsap told me that I had been prescribed the wrong medication. After a quick exam, he answered all of my questions and gave me a script for the correct meds. He was also super personable and easy to talk to. With NO insurance on my part, this visit was 1/3 the price of a Minute Clinic appointment, and I actually got what I needed. I've been a patient here for a few years and have not had a bad experience until yesterday. I went in for an eye exam, everything went well, but as I was checking out the front desk clerk was being super pushy about purchasing contacts. It was an uncomfortable and avoidable interaction. The clerk asked where I wanted my contacts shipped and I told her I didn't know I was ordering contacts? She then tells me "well if you don't want to use the free money that your insurance company offers that's up to you." She then went on to say "they just keep the $120, do you want them to do that, because that's what they do?" All very odd. I told her I have an out-of-network benefit and go through my fiance's mother who is an ophthalmologist... then she said "well I doubt she can get you $20 contacts." I asked how they suddenly became $20 and she said it was a 6 months supply ($140) with the $120 benefit, as opposed to the 12 month supply she was pushing earlier. This went on for at least 5 minutes as she was processing my exam payment. There were some other gems in there, too. She would absolutely not let me leave until I bought contacts through her. The punchline is this: I don't want to pay $70 for a box of contacts when I can get them cheaper elsewhere. I'm a consumer, that's my right. I know how my vision benefits work. They got paid for my eye exam and contact lens fitting. They are not entitled to my money, though that was the tenor of the exchange. There are a few other options in WP, so I might try to find another provider. This behavior does not belong in a professional office setting. read more

I have been a patient at Urban Eyecare off and on for many years, and had been impressed with Chad Milsap's professionalism. Until... I went in for an examination because of double vision problems. Chad didn't even examine me, but confidently stated "It's your brain" causing the problem. This sent me into a tizzy, and cause both myself and my wife a great deal of distress. After consulting with a neurologist, and receiving an MRI, I learned that it was a minor problem with a nerve, and NOT my brain. What SHOULD have happened is that Chad would have AT LEAST examined me. Then, after not finding anything wrong with me eyes (if that were to be the case), he SHOULD have said something like; "I can find nothing wrong with your eyes, perhaps it's something neurological". This is the more scientific/professional thing to do, rather than make pat and inaccurate diagnoses that have serious implications, and turn out to be WRONG!!! Sorry, but I do not trust him anymore, and will not return. read more

DON'T GO TO URBAN EYECARE!!!I had an absolutely horrible experience here! First, I had my annual eye exam here and they tried to charge me for a contact lens fitting that I didn't need and explicitly told them I didn't want. They wouldn't give me my glasses prescription until I paid them the extra $50 (on top of the $75 for the exam). Very slimy. Then, I had an online contact lens place where I order my contacts call them to verify the prescription. Urban Eyecare lied and told them I wasn't a customer! You would think that for the $550 I spent on a pair of glasses there they would treat me better. What a joke... read more

Count me in the list of very satisfied Urban Eyecare customers. Upon the recommendation of a super-stylist friend who always has great frames, I made an appointment for UE. Bonus points for the ease of online appointment scheduling as well as the reassuring reminder phone call. Rarely does an eye doctor put me at ease (I mean, come on, they are all up in your eyeball business), but Dr. Millsap was terrific. He explained each test he did, and took the time to chat with me about the "extras" I really needed for my glasses so I didn't waste money. And the gals in the front were absolute dolls in helping me pick out my new glasses. Once they got my style, they pulled only frames that I loved. In fact, I had a difficult time choosing my new set of peepers, but ended up with some seriously cute frames. The prices seemed pretty on par with any eyeglass store from which I have purchased in the past. I mean, come on, if you are planning on wearing your glasses most of the time like I do, you can justify the expense, right? They had worked out the copay issue with my insurance before I even arrived, so paying was a breeze. Less than a week later, they called me to pick up my new glasses and contacts. Hooray! I haven't been to their doctor, but I did go in to purchases eyeglasses this weekend based on yelper's recommendation and was SHOCKED that no one had mentioned that this place is OBSCENELY expensive. $400+ for frames?!?! Are you kidding me? They don't carry any of the good, non-traditional brands I had hoped to see, and the ones they did carry were very over priced. If you are one of those people who prides themselves on purchasing things from overpriced stores with 4 items per shelf -- this is the eyeglass place for you! The staff was disinterested and generally awkward. On the whole, I was very disappointed considering how many eyeglass stores are in a one block radius of this location. read more

I'm so happy to say that I don't have to pick out any frames from their fine selection. The first time I went in, I inquired about Lasik, Dr. Millsap gave me some info and told me when I was ready he's be glad to go over it in depth. I did the contacts for some time, then when I had a strange swelling of my eyelids I was advised to be out of my contacts until things cleared up. Since you have to be out of your contacts for a bit before lasik, when all was cleared up I decided to get more info. He did the pre-screening and gave me a referral to Kraft Eyecare, which he works in conjunction with. There are follow ups with lasik, which I get done at Urban all included with the cost of the procedure. Even though I'm out of lenses, and seeing just great, I still need exams so I'll continue coming here. read more

Came here for two years because the doctor Chad is great. Last year I saw a woman who was extremely rude and made me feel embarrassed for having a hard time keeping my eye open during the glaucoma test. Then this year, I was running 5 minutes late to an exam and the receptionist told me I would need to cancel and reschedule and that even if I was a minute late they wouldn't take me. She was so rude and didn't care at all if I made another appointment or not. Customer service is extremely important especially when it comes to medical offices. It's already a nerve-wracking experience, and when someone is being rude and standoffish, it makes it that much more uncomfortable. I will not be returning. read more

You'll pay a bit more than lenscrafters, but its totally worth it. You get a discount if you don't have insurance. Like the other reviews have said: the receptionist/assistant at Urban Eyecare does a killer job of helping you pick out a great new set of frames. I like Dr. Millsap but the lens prescription he gave me felt just a little bit off. I tried for several months to get used to the new lenses but they never "took." Headaches and constant straining to focus. However, he was very good with the re-exam and I'm picking up the adjusted lenses this evening. I'll probably keep going to Urban Eyecare because I feel like they're trying hard to keep me as a patient, and concerned about my eyes. I'll update this review after I have a good sense of the adjustments made to my prescription. UPDATE: I've been wearing the adjusted prescription for a couple weeks now and everything is 100% better. Dr. Millsap followed up with a phone call to check on things, so that sealed the deal for me. Great place and great service. read more

I was excited to go since I love the unique selection. However, I was very disappointed with the whole experience. We walked in to silence, not even a hi and were were the only customers there. Was not offered help so we took to looking around and trying on frames. When I found what I liked, I asked about it and was told that she couldn't help me with pricing or anything because it was Sunday!? I wanted an estimate or general price on a complete pair, not the exact amount to the penny! She also said she didn't know about scheduling an eye exam. I asked about adjusting some frames if I purchased and she said she didn't have the tools. What did she know? Once again, we walked out and will not go back. read more

This place is an example of what all eye places should be like. Your appointment should be on time, the test should be thorough yet fairly quick, contacts should be pretty easy to order if you've used them for years, payment should be able to be made with what your insurance provides (I have VSP) and you should be able to pay same day and pick up (or delivery) your contacts. I have not had such a seamless experience going to an eye doctor in years and I was so happy to met a lovely staff, Doctor and walk away with a great experience and my contacts (arrived only 2 days later). Have you ever shopped at a glasses store where you had to ask a sales person to get out another frame for you every 3 seconds? Well, I have too. And I don't like it. I'm not helpless, so let me peruse the frames without having to battle for the sales person's attention. Because let's face it. No one picks glasses without trying on 40909 million pairs first. This is my first star for Urban Eyecare. All the frames are neatly set on shelves so you can try on, laugh in the mirror, and model any of their 200 or so frames all you want. Second star awarded to their awesome staff. The Dr. was pleasant and fast. The gals in the front are attentive, but not pushy from the second you walk in the door. Honest too. If I tried on a pair of orange cat-eyes and they looked horrid, the girls would say, "I think this shape looks better on your face- here try these." Nice, polite, and honest. They won't let you walk out with a train wreck on your face. Third star is for how well they finesse your insurance coverage. I paid a very reasonable price for a year's worth of contacts and bitchin frames. Plus, all I gave her was my SSN and she did the rest. I never saw paper work. Fourth star is for selection. Top style frames, for less than Lens Crafters or boutique prices. But, yes people, if all you want are glasses so you read a book before bed, you might want to go somewhere else (mom and pop shop or Walgreens) for cheapies. Fifth star is for consistency. The bf and I went in the other day because the paint was starting to chip off his frames. Turns out they were still under warranty- they had another pair on the way within a couple days. My company offers the VSP insurance, so that was a key factor in finding a local eye doctor. The assisstant was extremely knowledgable about the insurance plan and getting all the paperwork filled out correctly. I thought using the insurance would have been a pain, but it was really easy with them. Dr. Millsap was very objective, thoughtful, and professional. I got the works - pupils dilated and all - and was outta there in less than an hour. I felt very comfortable and confident with the exam. The frame selection was vast and exclusively trendy. read more
