I stopped into Urban Grind Coffee House on the Tuesday morning after Labor Day and was greeted with lights out and locked doors. Another woman on the patio told me they weren't open yet even though the times listed online said they would be. There was a sign posted on the door that said, during Labor Day Weekend they would open at 9 AM. So I wasn't too unsettled, even though it was the day after Labor Day Weekend. A woman went into the building around 8:40, greeted us, and locked the door back behind her while we waited for the place to open. When we were let in a little after 9 AM it seemed like the two people behind the counter were still trying to get everything together. I found a corner to work for the morning and noticed a lot of the furniture was run down. I went up to order. The service was friendly. I decided on a large french press. I gear towards more black coffee than flavored lattes. Their selection of flavors was impressive but not what I was there for. The coffee wasn't anything to write home about. I don't think my french press was made with the best equipment because too many grounds were floating at the top. The creamer also seemed to be old cause it was floating instead of dissolving. The vibe did seem to pick up as people came into work and created a warm atmosphere. I would like to try this place out again in the future but I'd explore the rest of the Atlanta coffee scene first. read more

Super cute coffee shop! It's like thrift store meets coffee shop. The ambiance was really nice. It had jazz music playing. It was loud enough to enjoy but not overbearing. I was able to read and chill while deciding my next move. They have most of the basic coffee options, select pastries and a lunch menu! They also have a printer, wifi and outlets scattered throughout the store. I'd recommend this place especially if you want a relaxing setting where you can be alone. read more

Sunny and beautiful out today but yet cool. Cool enough for some hot tea. Urban Grind was on my list just for that. This is my first time here, and I'm digging the retro vintage 70's vibe they got going on. Not to mention while sipping on your tea, coffee or enjoying a smoothie...NAH!!! Better yet eating on a hot pesto/chicken or veggie burger all while listening to the soothing sounds of 70's-90's music over head. Urban Grind Coffee House interior is a grungie retro 70's vibe. All with the Goodwill maybe found on the side of the road furniture ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. Which ever way I love it!!!!!!!!? I had the peach/ginger tea today and it was really good. They serve loose tea herbal teas. This is a spot you can come and read a good book, newspaper paper or plug up your laptop and get some work done. Or just hang around with friends and conversate. What's not to like about Urban Grind? Comfortable interior, solid wifi speed and connectivity, and very pleasant employees. I only got a regular coffee and a breakfast burrito, but their coffee was as good as any coffee place I've been to in Atlanta and the burrito was pretty good for coffee shop breakfast. Seems to be plenty of outlets and surge strips connected to them. Selection of tables and chairs for work stations, and comfy chairs and couches for socializing. Great location behind GA Tech. A bit of a pain to get to, but that might have just been because of where I started from. Seems like I'll enjoy spending my day here working. read more

Very cozy inside. The baristas are fast and friendly. Great shop to use as a third place for those looking remote workers for a change in scenery. This spot has been on my list of coffee shops to try but whenever I've been in the area it's slipped my mind. Finally I intentionally made the trip and while I'd love to give this spot 5 starts (because my oatmilk vanilla chai latte was sooo good, I have to deduct 2 because the inside didn't appear as tidy as I expected and someone had their dog with them on the inside of the shop, which was also a turnoff. Finally tried this place! I had been wanting to come here for a while because I heard their bagel sandwiches are really good. Unfortunately, I saw on their yelp menu that they stop serving them at 11:30 (I got there after that time), but it was all good because they had some sandwiches that looked good to me. I ended up ordering a pesto chicken panini and a chai latte. I must say, the panini was very bland. But the chai latte was very sweet! I couldn't finish it because it was a little too sweet for my liking, but it was good. The girls who worked that day were very pleasant. The service was good. The vibes were cool. They alternated between playing 90s RnB, and really mellow type music. Overall, it was a cool visit. Their machine was down for Espresso and Hot Chocolate, but I was able to substitute what I really wanted with the Chai Tea Latte. That thing was so good I had to sip it at first twice not once. The attendant was very kind and accommodate, and I also purchased one of their carrot cake desserts which was fresh and had just arrived. There is ample parking on the street with easy access. The ambiance is vintage-style, neighborhood coffee shop. It's quiet, peaceful, and many are there working on their computers and chatting peacefully with friends. It was a terrific off-day afternoon delight, and what adds the proverbial sugar to the pot is it is Black-owned and -operated. Love it! Black owned coffee shop!!!! I love this place! The staff is social and funny, and the chai tea latte is literally BURSTING with flavor. I have frequented this place for various events, such as an open mic night and a dialogue on race. I've also been here to study and meet a friend, so the place does it all. The customers that here are always nice, I've had the chance to have a few conversations with people here and there and there are outlets spread everywhere so you can definitely bring a laptop to get work done. The decor/ furniture is a bit gaudy, but it honestly works with the whole vibe of the place. They have small deserts and a pretty good coffee/ tea election. My husband and I are regulars at Urban Grind. We get the same drink every visit--a chai tea latte, sometimes dirty. It's typically delicious and we know what to expect, but ever since they started hiring new employees, our drinks aren't made consistently. It's almost like they didn't train these new hires on how to craft the drink recipes properly. It's been hit or miss for the past 10ish visits, which is unfortunate because we drive from another part of town to get our drinks. It's disappointing when they aren't good! We've had them remade or simply take them back sometimes, but it's becoming a burden. It also doesn't help that the coffee shop will switch up their hours sporadically--sometimes not opening on time, or closing early without fair warning (outside of a sign posted on the door.) read more

This is Black Owned and I love it!! I'm so glad I finally got a chance to support the owner and meet her. She was so and helpful. I will definitely be back to support her and spread the word! It has a chill and cozy vibe to it. There are places to sit inside and even outside to enjoy the scenery. They have free wifi and great customer service. I had a Iced Caramel Macchiato and was very delicious. So many are other options you can choose from tea, frappe, coffee, espresso, latte and even food options. Never have I wanted to like a place so much and been so disappointed. First the good stuff... The place has a wonderful, warm, eclectic and inviting atmosphere. I had read reviews about the music, and I was anxious it was going to be too loud, but it was perfect. Now for the disappointment... The coffee was horrible. I love espresso so I ordered a double espresso shot and it was undrinkable. We sat for a while and enjoyed the ambience and conversation. We didn't drink our drinks and we threw them away as we left. The wonderful thing about great espresso is that it can pull more sweetness and richness from coffee beans than one would think possible. This espresso had nothing pleasant about it and seemed to have only extracted the awful parts of the coffee. My wife ordered a cafe au lait. Often milk can hide the flaws of poorly made coffee, but not in this case. The only thing I can figure is that the young man who was making coffee was new. It sounded like he had to ask another employee how to make my wife's drink. He was also slow, really slow. There are so many wonderful reviews, I have to assume that someone in this place is normally capable of making coffee. It had the right amount of milk, the right amount of sugar, & the right amount of just about everything ... topped with Cinnamon :) Their price points are really good as well, a lot cheaper than most of the other coffee lounges in West Midtown. I have a soft heart for Black Owned Businesses; especially a Black Woman so I kept an open mind when entering here the first time. Ready for anything! First glance reaction: couches, different. Book stand, I like it. High tables, oooo! Bar like seating, cool! Music that cuts off with bad weather, manageable! Since then I need more than 2 hands to count the times I've visited this coffee house. The turkey/swiss sandwich is my go-to and any of the cold drinks are delicious! I like to read and do homework here. It has free parking (3 on side, lot about 200ft away) but if you want to park in front it costs. A little pricey if you're on a college budget like me but it's usually worth it! read more

It's Sunday evening. I've got some work to catch up on before the Monday grind begins, and I'm in serious need of a change of surroundings. I finally settled on Octane, mostly because they were open later than Panera (8pm) and Starbucks (9pm). But when I walked up to Octane, there were people sitting OUTSIDE on their laptops... and it's 40 degrees tonight. So on to my backup - Cypress Street. As I'm driving down Howell Mill I see a coffee shop that's open, looks promising, and not that busy. I took a chance and entered into Urban Grind. Website said they closed at 10:30pm; SWEET! (They actually closed at 9:30pm, not sure why the discrepancy) The barista guy was super friendly and helped me hop onto their free wifi. I ordered a large mocha, and it shortly appeared at my coffee table (yes, in a real ceramic coffee cup) piping hot and ready to fuel me for a few hours. It was super-extra chocolatey. I let the barista know that when he asked me how it was, and he was very cool about my critique. He said next time just ask him to go light on it. Basically in the 3 hours I was there, I started to feel like a "regular" already. This place is WAY cozier than Octane and has the true coffee shop feel: complete with indy music, fresh pastries, and comfy (albeit not the most beautiful) couches. I feel like I landed right inside Central Perk. The only thing about this area is that it lands on about 2 out of 5 on the Sketchy Scale. The sidewalks surrounding Urban Grind aren't really well-lit, and some dude came into the coffee shop and asked people for bus change. But there were enough people in the coffee shop and outside walking around that I felt safe to walk by myself, but still unsafe enough to position my keys between my fingers while walking to my car. Edited to add: caffeine usually doesn't have that big of an effect on me, but I had a lot of trouble falling asleep until around 1am. So unless you're going for an all-nighter, stick with the small sizes and less caffeinated beverages. read more

Let's start this off by asking who doesn't like a good coffee to kick the day off? The only thing better is coffee with Bailey's in it. I was on here looking for something else but the black owned business tab popped up and of course I surfed on on to see what was being suggested. Low and behold I know the area but never noticed the place. Immediately upon entry I was greeted with a warm positive voice. The place is so cozy. I honestly wouldn't mind going back just to find a corner and get lost in a book or knock out some work. They had several coffee options as well as food. Someone ahead of me ordered something that smelled divine but I decided to save that for the next visit as I was pressed for time. The young lady was most helpful in answering my questions. I like to ask about house specialties that we can't get anywhere else or any favorites to try. I ended up with a caramel macchiato latte,which is whats I usually get at my regular coffee spot. So again, this next time I'm vowing to try some food and a new drink. There's also a good selection of parking granted the location. I cant wait to give this place another go round. read more

When I entered the establishment that kind stranger, Jalen was behind the counter! I ordered a large Hazelnut coffee and a croissant. Both were exactly what I wanted. This is Wonderful place to hang out with friends, lounge by yourself and grab a cup of something yummy or host an event. It's a cozy, intimate place that provides a truly hang out atmosphere. I went to a social event for bloggers and I couldn't have thought of a better place to have our first meetup. This place is good for social events and or meetings because it can fit a good amount of people without it feeling too crowded. If you need to play a video of some sort they have the set-up to accommodate that. If it's a larger crowd they will also provide a micro-phone if that's needed. I had the Salmon Burger Sandwich which was pretty good and the price was definitely easy on the pocket. Parking is scare. You have to park on the street so be sure to head out early if you're meeting up with others because you will have a long walk ahead of you. read more

Service was great, the people there were very sweet. They also strictly enforced the "under 10 people at a time" rule. The couches were cozy and they had a lot of seating options. This is my go-to for coffee if I'm not in the mood to make it myself. Octane is not even a football field away, but I go here for something a little sweeter since each place has their coffee niche that they fill. Urban Grind fills the "I want Starbucks, but I really don't want to a) drive to a Starbucks and b) pay for the Starbucks name." I've had the white raspberry truffle (cold), the turtle mocha (hot and cold), and the caramel macchiato (cold). The syrups they use are very flavorful, however, if they put even just a little too much syrup it's a little too flavor until you mix it super well (I'm looking at you raspberry). However, even if you mix it super well some of the syrup, especially the caramel, will slowly settle on the bottom of the cup so when you're getting those last few sips in, you might decide not to finish it. They're also super sugary, so don't plan on eating dessert with this or your taste buds will be overpowered. The employees are really friendly, so if they're not busy I'd recommend striking up a conversation with them. A couple of cons though is that every time I've gone, they've only had one person working, so they not only take the order but make the drink, and they tend to take one person's order and make it before taking the order of the next person in line even if there are 2-4 people waiting. Hopefully, that's just because I've gone at off hours. Parking is on the street and on the "side lot" which is still street parking because it's in the bottom of an apartment building (M Street). Oh, and they really like doing local community events such as salsa lessons on Monday nights, comedy nights on Tuesdays, and open mic poetry on Thursday nights (Fall 2014). Unless you want to partake in these events, it might be a little crowded to just grab a drink and go in less than 5 minutes. Pro tip: They have a frequent buyer card. If the cashier doesn't give it to you, you can ask (politely of course) for one. read more
