Looking at the 14' blue laird board...
    Amie B.

This surfshop is behind a home with a big board on the side as a marker. Don't let that deter you. Go into the driveway and drive along the side of the house and all the way to the back and you will see the The Perfect Wave Surfshop. This is a small shop that practically carries everything you need for paddle boarding and then some. We came by on a Sunday to take a look at some boards and spoke to Rosemary. She was quite patient with all my Sweetie's questions. She was a plethora of information! My Beau was undecided on a what type of board he wanted so Rosemary suggested he test run a couple of the boards. We scheduled some time the week after and met with Bobby at Houghton Beach. It's $50 to try out the boards, which will go back into your purchase. Just to note, he does accept credit cards at the beach. Bobby and his team put the boards out on the water and he even let my beau borrow an all-carbon fiber ZRE paddle. My beau tried out a 14' race board and their 126s planing board. Bobby even went as far as to paddle out with him and give him a few tips. I thought that was awesome! Bobby was patient and amazing with all his passion and knowledge for paddle boarding. He answered all of my beau's questions and then some! Well, my beau ended up falling in love with both boards. Oh no! He ended up with the 126s planing board and a ZRE paddle as an upgrade. (For the Seahawks fans, this is the exact same board Pete Carroll purchased. OK, I just had to throw that tidbit in there.) You can't go wrong with a paddle that weights less than a pound. It makes a humongous difference when you're paddling for quite some time. We ended up going back to the shop to meet up with Rosemary so she can assist us with the purchase. I ended up with a new ZRE paddle for myself and a new fin for my paddle board and also purchased a few additional accessories. The shop has everything! Rosemary cut my paddle to size on the spot. She also assisted my Beau in making sure the board was strapped on the car properly. I would definitely check out Bobby's shop. If you're not sure about purchasing a board just yet, check out his rental tent out in Houghton Beach Park. He's right next to the playground area. You can miss it. I highly recommend this shop!!

Awesome selection for the die-hard NW surfer. Have everything, order anything, missing nothing. Spot maps, long boards, shortboards, spongies, wetters... (got mine there.) Good people!

Surf Ballard took up the challenge and exceeded expectations. I had wanted to get 2 fin bays on the bottom replaced with larger fin bays and have one installed on top for a water bottle holder. The traction pad was really old and there had been some amateur patch work done right next to it. Also the nose and tail were pretty beat up and looked like some other amateur patch work had been done there. I had hoped they would be able to do all of this but they couldn't. They had the foresight and did due diligence by contacting the original shaper and found out that the fin bay installation would not have been supported by the internal structure. So disappointed they couldn't do it but stoked they found out before cutting in and destroying the board. They were able to take care of everything else and I heard the old traction pad was a b&tch to get off but they did a great job and for a great price. See before and after pictures.

I'm not used to having to do everything myself. What is even more disturbing is that, they do mention as part of the directions, if you have difficulty carrying it, especially if you have back problems and such, no staff member can help you. There's also no staff at the beach to help in anyway. We got there at 440 pm which is ten min later than our appointment at 430, only to be told we had to wait for our kayaks to be cleaned after we struggled to find parking. For the time it took to wait for the kayaks to be cleaned, to the transport back and forth, if you want more time on the water for the buck, go somewhere else like Moss Bay or WAC or even Greenlake. If you are late in returning it, it is $1 per minute.

Super easy to book a reservation with them online, and they send you an online waiver to fill out prior to your boarding time, which is nice so you don't have to worry about filling out forms once you're at the park. They did a wonderful job enforcing that masks be worn at the check in/check out, and they took the time to make sure each paddle, life jacket, board was sanitized before the next person used it! They also always do a great job letting you know how the wind is blowing at the time, and which direction you should head towards so that the winds don't push you too far away before you have to paddle all the way back to the marina. Lastly, they always have groupon deals during the summer, making them a VERY affordable company to paddle board with!

Their staff are friendly and generally really young. If it's your first time, they are very helpful in giving you the rundown of paddleboard basics. I suggest going online to Groupon to find deals for paddle board rentals. Once you buy the Groupon, you can go online to their website to reserve the time you wanna go paddleboarding. You can also sign your waiver online or if you forget, you can sign it when you get there. They do a variety of rentals I believe (kayaks as well?) but they do single person paddle boards as well as a big giant one that can fit like a whole family on them!

The instructor was precise and encouraging, careful to show us good form from the very start. My fellow rowers were enthusiastic, but also a little out of shape middle aged adults. We all had a great time, and often went into Redmond for drinks and munchies after classes. Everyone finished the twice a week class, which is really saying something in a busy summer. Note that you are expected to come a little early and leave later after putting the boats away. Traffic along Lake Sammamish Blvd can be pretty busy heading south in the evenings. The facilities are adequate with a lovely spot along the river that feeds into Lake Sammamish on the north end. They are fund-raising for a beautiful new facility. Until then, the parking lot is a little dark and the walk to the boathouse is a little scary to make alone. I just waited until another class member showed up and walked with them. Make sure you ALWAYS pay for parking, or buy a pass from the city of Redmond. I'm looking forward to taking "Learn to Row II" so I can join the Assoc and take out a skull by myself. Also looking forward to enrolling my kid - she has the perfect body type, and it would be nice to have some sort of hope of a sports scholarship for college. She's not very sporty otherwise.
