Muir Skate used to be located in Muir College at UCSD before it moved out to PB, which means my allegiance to it is pretty automatic purely based on that fact (i have a high sense of muir pride and loyalty!) plus i used to walk by and see Scott showing people how to use their skateboard and I'd always be tempted to go buy one. The downside is that the new location is not super easy to find because there isn't a big sign, but if your looking for it you will find it. Scott is chill and I've heard good things about all things skateboard related, but being a non skater I just go there to buy rainbows. Scott seems to have the best price on them unless you want to go to San Clemente and the people that work there are chill and friendly. All in all Muir skate is cool in my book. read more

Not a happy camper Let me preface this by saying that out of any shop around, Muirskate is by far the best one to go to. They have a solid selection and there shipping is fast. While I'm a huge advocate of their online store, their walk in shop however, is another thing.. Experience #1 The first complete set up I got, I came to the store in person to get it assembled and pick it up. As I walked in, I saw numerous employees either assembling boards or loading up packages for shipment. Cool, they were in the middle of something, but I'm happy to wait my turn. I stood at the front waiting to be helped or at least greeted, but was completely ignored. Tired of waiting, I spoke up and said "Hello, I'm here because I wanted to get a board set up." Without looking up, a man with a passive aggressive tone replied, "well am I setting up anything or are you going to tell me what it is?" Sheesh. I told him what I needed and he set it up no problem. I paid and walked out of the store. I went outside to test my sweet new ride. As I carved out a turn in the parking lot, I noticed he tightened the trucks SO much, that it was impossible to go other than straight. No big deal, I had a skate tool, but I have no idea why he had such a problem with me. Experience #2 I drove out to the store to pick up a fresh set of wheels. When I got to the store, it was pretty busy with other customers. though I certainly didn't mind. It's cool being in an atmosphere with other skaters present. I picked up a set of Butterballs and waited in line, which took about 15 minutes or so. When I got to the checkout, he scanned the wheels and I was about to pay. As I was paying, cash in hand, he suddenly took the wheels back from me and said he couldn't sell them to me. Why? It turns out that was the LAST set in stock, and as I handed him my money, someone bought them out from under me online at the VERY last second. I asked him why he couldn't cancel the online order? Knowing that I drove out all the way for these specific wheels, waited in line, cash in hand, everything. He refused to help me, and told me to go find some other wheels instead. My beloved wheels then slipped away out of sight behind the counter. I walked out the store empty handed. Maybe it's just bad luck, maybe someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed, but I can't help but get a sour taste in my mouth every time I think about going back in there. I'm not a Karen, I'm a really easy going guy, but that was enough to make even me upset. I love their online store, and will always advocate it, but the guys at Muirskate really need to learn a lesson or two in a thing called manners. TL;DR The online store is a fantastic resource for skate parts and accessories but their in person shop etiquette needs work. I'm a pretty rare yelp reviewer, but this place was so awesome that I had to make this review. As a beginner to longboards, I was pretty unsure about the build I should go for, but emailing Scott via the email on the Muir Skates website, I was able to get some incredible insight and recommendations. Scott was super awesome at handling my concerns about choosing a new board and was willing to really help out in building my board. Honestly, it might have been the best customer service I've ever had in my life. The boards themselves are also pretty awesome, they have a warehouse full of stuff in the back and are even willing to assemble for you when purchasing. One thing to note is that pick-up also works Mondays and Tuesdays (the site says they are closed, but they seem to allow pick-ups). I would definitely recommend this to anyone on the edge; especially if you are someone who needs some advise on choosing your parts. read more

I just ended up going down to the store and I'm glad I did, Scott spent at least 30 minutes with me to find exactly what I was looking for. I only ever get my skate equipment at Muir Skate. Scott opened the joint when I was a sophomore at UCSD and he quickly blew up. Everyone on campus knew him as the awesome Muir Skate dude who would let you try out any board before choosing which to buy. I've purchased three boards from him and adore two. The other one, he actually cautioned I might not like but I was stubborn and got it anyways. Ever since then, I ask him what would be a good board for what I want to do and he gives me a good honest recommendation. And its always right. The lady who helped me out was super helpful. She let me know that the wheels and bearing decisions I had in mind are just a waste of money. I appreciate when a business doesn't try to rip you off. I'm not going to name what brands we discussed, but just ask the people there if you aren't too sure. The warehouse entrance is around the back. Just park in that parking lot in front and you can walk around the back. There is no Muir Skate sign, but you can tell when you walk into the back and they just have stacks of wheels and boards and buckets of longboarding things. I didn't get a chance to look at everything, but they pretty much have everything - from wheel spacers to a whole lot of different wheels to slide gloves. And of course, they have a wide selection of boards. They don't list prices up front though, but it's basically the prices they have online. The lady that helped me hooked me up with free spacers - which I didn't even know I needed - with my bearings. I just installed them (Magic Bearings) and the standard carving bushings, and they are smooth and silent. read more

I found Muir Skate online while I was looking for a longboard for a gift. After some research, I saw that Muir had the best prices, and a great selection of boards. I was just about to order online when I noticed that they were just a half hour from where I live. I was in contact with them via email about the particular board I wanted, and the specs I was looking for - and they were quick to reply, very helpful, and answered all my questions. Just got my first board from Muirskate today and it was an awesome experience. I've been to this place multiple times getting board parts here and there and fine tuning my little cruiser it seems like every other day. I first gave them a call and Scott assured that they were in their busiest time of the year this week so I wouldn't be able to ask questions or anything but thats probably just since the load is pressuring him a bunch so he was not that helpful today but however his workers, Derrick I believe?(sorry forgot) built my board for me and got me the perfect parts for what I intended to do. Now I'm the type of person that needs friends with the things I do so I attempt to get a few people here and there to join long boarding and for sure I will recommend them all to Muirskate! From the boards you dreamed about from pictures online, you can now see in person and some can be rented or demo'd. Boards aren't the only things they keep in stock as they offer an impressive selection of trucks, wheels, bushings, and parts. It's also quite surprising that their prices are equivalent to competitive online prices and their new location is in PB and you would of thought they'd jack the prices up! Scott called me about my order because he was concerned with a couple of factors: 1. The shipping: Since I am an impatient little girl, I opted for 2-day shipping, planning to pay about $25 extra. Little did I know, Scott explained that (FREE) ground shipping from SoCal to NorCal actually does take 2 days! 2. My board setup, specifically, the bushings. However, he stood corrected as he reviewed the parts I selected and said I was all set. A day later, I decided to change my whole order to a completely new deck and set of wheels. I thought it might have been such an inconvenience for them-- thankfully it wasn't! (I'm assuming they didn't assemble it yet, so I caught them just in time.) Although like every shop their goal is to sell you something, I always went away with the opinion that at the very least I was making a very informed decision (ie little regrets when buying). First time buying a skate parts online and i was very impressed with their customer service by how fast they responded with small problems and were always there to help out. They replied to emails rather quickly even though it was really late into the afternoon like maybe even past 7:00 PM. I received my parts in about 2 days which again is pretty quick. I only had one problem with the spacers and quickly emailed them again. They responded just as quick saying that they would send in another pack of spacers as early as tomorrow. Awesome shop. I considered driving down to get my board and buy a set up but decided to call first. I didn't catch the name of the guy who called but I'm guessing it's Alan I think? I called asking about a set up I had in mind and asked for his opinion on the trucks and about their store brand wheels. He assured me the Caliber trucks I wanted were great and that their wheels would be perfectly suited for the cruising I'd be doing. I decided to pull the trigger since I really needed to get a better set up for going around. I knew it'd get here quick. I ordered Thursday, It got here Friday(I'm in Burbank) Came home today to find it all packaged up. Packaging works since I'm going to be tearing this board up anyway with the way I ride. It rides SO smooth. Couldn't believe how the set-up was with my Caliber 50 degree trucks and their wheels and Bones Red bearings. Its smoother than any other board I've put together. The trucks turn amazing. At this point I was already sold on buying from them from now on and plan on going down to SD just to check their store out since this hobby is a lot cheaper than shooting. On top of that, since I called, they installed some Venom DH 90a bushings and flat washes that I've been wanting to try. I couldn't believe they did that! The whole point of this purchase really was to try out new brands and parts I never have before since I've always stuck to Sector 9, Independent, Gravity parts. Not anymore, I'm going to keep coming back here, calling up and asking their opinion when I'm getting a new set up since I can't seem to find any good local longboard shops. They're awesome!
