I love this place and my dog does too. I used to make my dog food at home but this business and their expertise has made me have one less thing to do every week or so and it's so nutritious for my dog and it makes me feel proactive for my dogs over all health and wellness. The staff here are so nice, kind, caring and knowledgeable and I appreciate them so much for the love and intention they pour into their dog food. On 10/23 I was also there around 4:30 and this woman walked in and immediately insulted the smell of the place (you're in a raw dog food shop) by saying 'it smells bad in here' and proceeded to stand there and look around while I was being checked out and also going over the reward system and the points I accumulated. We both looked at her kind of in shock, and I was helped out with the rest of my order. She then proceeds to reach over to right in front of me to take dog treats (that are made with love in house btw) and leave. There was no questions about what the place is about or inquiries about what the purpose of the shop was. Just a really rude comments and then proceeds to take free stuff and leave. I (being a human with eyes), reacts and says 'that was so incredibly rude', not weird, RUDE. BECAUSE IT WAS. as a customer and an objective person, I have a right to point out and speak about how incredibly rude and entitled that was. and we both were shocked that someone would walk into an establishment, complain about how it smells and then take free stuff and leave. The review down below giving this place a one star is not surprising given the interaction I witnessed but I just want to say is not at all my experience going here. These people are so caring and thoughtful and passionate. If raw dog food isn't your thing, that's fine but don't insult a passionate company and then complain like they did something to you. You came in with an attitude and then took it to the internet. Honestly crazy. Anyway, if you want your dog to love eating and be lean and healthy and have energy and support two passionate people who care about canine health and wellness, I 1000% recommend these wonderful people. I will never regret making the investment for my dogs health. I walked in with my dog on today 10/23/25 at 4:30 pm. I could not have been met with a more rude associate and client at the desk. I wanted to shop around, see what was sold there today in the case I was interested in making a purchase or getting involved with products for my pet. I noted it smelled bad like fish, my dog was very interested in the scent and the employee rolled her eyes at me saying yeah fish was just made. For a pet business, I've never seen someone so mean to my dog who sat well behaved and looked at the older woman working. You would think she would inform us about fresh products.. especially as I am a neighborhood local. After a minute of looking around, I noticed a treat sample bowl and took one to leave with my dog. On the way out, the employee and client both made a very loud remark stating "how weird was that, wow and then taking a treat?" That I had walked in wanting to shop around, taking a sample treat next to a clipboard advertising them. Extremely poorly managed storefront having disgruntled employees speak that way/gossip about prospective customers. I'll never give my money to this business for anything here. read more

The health of my dog is really important for me. Our 11 year old hound has been on Maxota Raw food for the past 6 months and she has been more active. She plays more than she use to, she runs faster and she sleeps way less. Her poo (I know, it's gross) is always solid, no diarrea and no weird smells. Initially it felt weird to feed her a raw diet, I was concerned about germs and spoiled meat. Going to Urban Wolf and checking their kitchen changed my mind. Everything was clean and safe. On top of the meal plan (in my case only Venison, my dog is allergic to poultry), I also buy their goat milk frozen yogurt. It helps to fight the heat of the San Diego summer and it's a healthy treat. Urban Wolf also sells few other things that I (or better, my hound) haven't tried yet. I'll update this review in a couple of weeks. I wanna see if the salmon oil can make my dog's coat shinier. While their food isn't cheap, its cost is outweighed by better health (and therefore less in vet bills) for your puppy. I believe it's worth it. read more

They support and guide clients on choosing optimal meal plans and transitioning your furbabies onto their new food. I came here as a recommendation from a friend whose dog was having similar skin issues as mine. My 9 (almost 10) year old Corgi had been suffering from diffuse itching, very pink skin and hot spots which would regularly get infected. Our vet suspected the symptoms were due to food allergies. We previously fed our dog kibble. Per the vets recommendation, we switched our pup to their dermatology brand kibble. This worked temporarily, but a couple of months after switching, the same symptoms returned. I had been considering switching our pup's food to actual real food for a while, but these constant vet visits finally pushed me to look up my options. At first I considered making the food myself-but I definitely dont have the knowlege about how to make a balanced diet for my pup or where to get quality ingredients. This is where Urban Wolf helped so much! They have fresh food available as walk in or via meal plans so you can plan ahead! They are great with communicating with their clients and make it convenient for you to get their products. My dog has been transitioning onto the maxota diet and so far so good! Its too soon to see skin changes (its only been about 1.5 weeks), but I can see improvements in his energy and decrease in itching. Cant wait to see how he continues to improve! I was lucky enough to meet Gunner at the local dog park, Quartyard, and found that he was not only my neighbor, but a purveyor of raw dog food. He sat and chatted with me about proper nutritional needs for dogs and it was evident he knew his stuff. His passion for canine health made me extremely excited for the opening of his business, Urban Wolf. My two basset puppies were used to a raw food diet, but suffer from occasional digestive and skin issues. When my pup had refused to eat food, he kindly gave me a sample and it was eaten immediately (again, he was my neighbor and I ran into him in the parking lot, valued his expertise, and asked his opinion). This incident only added to my excitement for my pups to be on his Maxota dog food full time. The store could not open fast enough. Fast forward to several months later: My husband and I went to the store! It is located conveniently in a East Village and is extremely clean. We chose venison, bison, chicken thighs, and bison knuckles after Gunner listened to our dogs needs. The pricing is comparable to other high end raw dog foods, but you have the comfort of knowing the food was made locally in a professional kitchen, using all local and organic materials, by a man who lives and breaths health and wellness. I love Urban Wolf and Gunner and AJ's mission! They are making an incredible product and helping educate folks about raw food diets for our fur family members. I recently switched my two dachshunds over to a raw food diet with amazing results. My girl has slimmed down, her body odor and bad breath disappeared immediately and she's sleek and shiny and so much happier. My 15-year old boy is much peppier and not as anxious as he usually is when walking. I came to choose a raw food diet for my puppers from sad experience: my husband and I adopt older dachshunds from rescue and several of our girls ended up contracting exotic tumors that killed them within 6 months of our adopting them, even with operations and treatment. It's a pattern that alarmed me as we were feeding them cooked chicken and expensive, "premium" rated dog food (Solid Gold, Blue Buffalo, etc). I ripped my house apart and did analyses to see if there was something environmental affecting my babies. When my most recent girl, a strapping, healthy Black and Tan developed a large tumor on her chest, I was desperate. Her health really seemed to deteriorate under our care, though we were trying so hard to give her the best! I started reading about diets for dogs with tumors and learned how toxic even "premium" dog foods are. I was stunned and it explained what was happening to my girls. There were also a lot of recommendations from credible sources about a raw food diet to treat cancer and tumors in dogs and so I decided to try it. After researching and reading about proper raw diets, I took a shot at doing it on my own. My girl took to the new diet immediately and loved it and I could see improvements in the first week. So I was all in. It took me about 5 - 8 hours a week to ride around to find all the different meats (of acceptable quality) and do the prep and I was still falling short due to a lack of the right equipment. Enter Urban Wolf! I wanted to use a brand that was sourcing sustainably and carefully for how the stock animals were raised/fed; that minimized any additives or supplements (other brands add a lot of supplements; it may be okay for some dogs, but I wanted to see the effect of a simple raw diet before adding tons of supplements) and Urban Wolf offered all of that. Plus, I liked that they make the food every week and in small batches. The results were truly amazing, though maybe not so surprising when one understands how terrible kibble really is. My girl dog still has her chest tumor, but it doesn't seem to be growing and she's less swollen/puffy in general. The chronic greasy smelliness of her coat and ears has disappeared. Both dogs' teeth and breath are fresher - no matter how much we used to brush and rinse their teeth, there seemed to be no stopping the decay - and our girl isn't as whiny as she used to be; she seems satisfied. My older boy is OCD, but after starting on Urban Wolf food, he's more confident on walks and, while he used to be able to only walk 15 minutes, now he prancing along for 30 minutes. Another point in this very long review is price. As other reviews have noted, while the price tag may seem a bit steep, you might be surprised how affordable it really if the food helps lower vet bills. Teeth cleaning for dogs cost $300 - $500 PER procedure (bc of the kibble, my two dogs needed a teeth cleaning every year with extractions), treatment for cancer, skin allergies, and other illnesses caused by diet can easily cost thousands. If there right diet helps avoid all those bills, it might be worth it. I just can't say enough good things about AJ and Gunner and Urban Wolf. They've been and continue to be fantastic about sharing information. I've come to really look forward to visiting them at the store every week to pick up food and chat, and I have two much healthier / happier doggies! read more

I have personally adopted a plant-based diet. As a human being, there is no biological requirement for me to ingest animal products, therefore, I chose not to do so. BUT....my dog Izzy, an 83 pound German Shepherd, would not thrive on a vegetarian or vegan diet. Her biological nutritional requirements are based on raw animal meat, bones, and organs. We have two Schipperke puppies and an eight year old Cocker Spaniel. We were completely ignorant about our dog's nutrition and were feeding them store bought kibble. Then one day we were introduced to AJ and Gunner and Urban Wolf. We visited their store, got a tour of their amazing set up and kitchen, and were educated on the benefits of raw food. Fast forward 1.5 years and our dogs are about as healthy as they can be! One of our pups was having digestive issues so AJ patiently worked with me on several options. We moved him to a denser protein like venison and his symptoms disappeared overnight! In addition, our groomer commented that our Cocker's skin has never looked better. We were walking to the petco dog day event and stumbled across urban wolf. Our golden retriever has been eating weekly raw bone marrows to help maintain a good immune system. The place is absolutely HEAVEN for raw food lovers or those looking to boost or simply spoil your Fido a little. They range from snacks to full weekly plans and also will arrange delivery for folk not near downtown. The food is sourced fresh and prepared on site to maximize freshness. Frozen variety packs available as well as bones too. There is something for every dog. We're happy to have found them and spoiled Nala with some duck for the next few days. These guys are amazing. Yes, it's expensive, but the changes I've seen in my dog are incredible and they make it so easy to feed a raw diet as all the hard work is done for me. My dog suffered from very itchy skin and the vet wanted to put him on pricey medications. Raw diet cleared that up within 2 weeks. Friendliest and most helpful business owners I've ever met. My turning 11 in August Cockapoo, Tucker, loves mealtime! The owners and staff are super friendly. I made the switch to Maxota after Tucker had a mast cell tumor removed in February of 2016. Prior to finding out Tucker had surgery, I had always given him good food (rotating between frozen raw, freeze dried raw, and grain free kibble and always rotating proteins as well), but once that ugly C word was said at the Vet's office, I started reading as much as I could to try and prevent a reoccurrence.
