Came here today around noon. The store looks clean and has a really good variety of fish -- some are even rare, which was nice to see. I got an Oto and a pea puffer, and the prices seemed fair compared to other places. Unfortunately, the experience didn't go as well afterward. The employee didn't ask if I wanted to choose the fish myself (maybe because the tanks were high up), so I just trusted their pick. Tonight, I found a visible parasite hanging from my Oto, which was really upsetting. I was also given an adult pea puffer -- not sure how old -- and now I'm having to quarantine him to see if he's just old or sick. I really wanted to love this store because of the selection, but I wish they paid more attention to the health and handling of their fish. read more

This place is amazing! I got it freshwater aquarium earlier this year and have been going here regularly for plants fish and advise! The staff is very knowledgeable and friendly. They've given me a lot of advice of what fishing plants to add to my fish tank. I also had some issues with algae which they really gave me great advice to address. They also have other reptiles including snakes and geckos. They also have salt water fish and coral. This is a great place for any aquarium needs! read more

Came into the store about 1-2 o'clock in the afternoon on a Tuesday. I have a freshwater aquarium, and I came in specifically with the intent to purchase plants and community fish like tetras. After spending about 1520 minutes, browsing the freshwater tanks, I noticed that there was two people helping customers in the area. One of them seem to disappear while the other one continued to work with a customer that she had already been helping. There were only a couple of other people browsing so I didn't think much of it. When I went up to the front counter and asked who do I speak to about being next in line, they pointed to the woman that was already helping a guest. I walked over and waited behind the person that she was helping. Another Woman, much older a guest came over squeezed past me, said, excuse me and stood in front of me. I asked her what she was doing because she clearly felt that she was next in line. She said that she was waiting on the other side of the tank and was next. I did not see her nor did. I know that she was even in the store. The associate said that other people will be with us, and when I questioned who, she started calling out names, but no one came. The customer looked at me, said that I dressed pleasantly and looked calm, but now in her opinion, I was aggressive. I told her that I don't take judgments from people feel entitled. She called me an a-hole. At that point, a manager seem to miraculously appear, asked me my situation, and after disclosing that the customer was behaving unruly she did nothing to remove the customer or ask them to leave the store. I mentioned how much money I had intended to spend and asked if I could get some assistance. Nothing was done so I left. I'm not going back. Suggested resolution: train your associates on how to kindly step aside from their current task of helping a guest to ask for assistance when they can clearly see a queue forming. Make sure breaks are covered by a manager or another associate so no one feels that they're not worth their time or money. Review these points daily to make sure your team knows how to handle unruly behavior. read more

Good variety of fish and prices are almost the same as your regular pet store ( Petco or PetSmart). Not enough staff members though I was tempted to get a fish but I didn't see anyone so it was good and it was bad in some point . I used to love this store but quality has dropped significantly the last 2 years. I was there this week and the aquatic plants for sale are covered in algae and deteriorating. The tanks were completely covered in diatoms. Why would anyone want to buy a plant that would destroy the equallibrium of their tanks? The last time I bought a plant from them it introduced BBA and snails, both of which were a nightmare to get rid of. The show tanks are gorgeous but they clearly dont prioritize what they sell as it was really run down. Reptile section looked to be in better shape but I dont suggest buying anything from their aquatics section until they clean it up. Real shame because this used to be the best store in San Diego. read more

Pretty sure this bearded dragon was dead in the first picture, it wasn't breathing , also that's not the proper food or lighting for a healthy dragon and there was worms and crickets just roaming around the cage. I come here to buy dubia roaches for my dragon and the staff is always friendly but it hurts me seeing these animals in such bad conditions.. read more

I've been coming to the store for about 30 years. They have a really good reptile selection but the African cichlids have really dropped off as far as availability and quality. Most likely due to the fact that Ron no longer works there. ( I used to buy fish out of his garage in IB) Part of the experience in buying and keeping fish is having conversations about the different species with experienced personnel. I was conversing with Tom Yost and realized I sold his father an 180 glass aquarium sometime around 1980. If you don't talk to people there's no connection if there's no connection you won't get people introduced into a hobby where you're guaranteed repeat customers. Online fish vendors will put places like this out of business eventually. read more

Did y'all get new management or something? I typically buy live food here, and have even purchased my beardie from pet kingdom. But lately they've been slipping. The beardie tanks were unkept with old poop, employees were playing terrible music that was loud even for me. So I can't imagine how the animals deal with it. Also, I witnessed the ginger gym rat blow his nose and immediately touch all the paper work on the desk and proceeded to bag up my live food. I'm not really looking forward to coming back but I'm willing to try ONE MORE TIME. read more

Prices seem fair, neither cheap nor expensive. Staff wasn't as friendly as I was hoping. This is a huge pet store and they do have a wide variety of items and animals. My son had noticed their baby tortoise was upside and he had been watching the tortoise for a good 10 mins not sure how long he had originally fell on his back. Saw their sign saying turtles can flip themselves over, but this poor guy was already exhausted. Eyes were closed and had not moved. I know I'm no expert, but have over 15 years of experience owning my own tortoises and working for my father who owned a pet store back home. I know flipping is a part of a learning experience, but I wouldn't allow that to last longer than 15-20 mins at that age. I went to let an employee know and she brushed me off saying they need to learn muscle memory. I don't think dehydrating a baby tortoise with the heat lamps on is a good idea, but hey I tried. read more

I wish I never would have learned about this place because I can't stop coming here! This place is excellent. They've got just about every animal covered that you can legally own in the state of California. My gf and I recently got into freshwater fish and learned about this place through Yelp. When we got there, the staff was and is always super super helpful. Rain/Raine/Reign (?spelling) helped us first pick our live plants and gave us some great tips on where to get started. She was also able to test our water and let us know how are cycling process was going. When we went back, Ben was super helpful with getting us started with the various species to fill our tank. Got an assortment of shrimp, snails and fish so far in the tank and it's been going well. Lastly, the ladies behind the register are always friendly. We've gone in about every single week, sometimes days in a row, and I feel like the staff isn't sick of seeing us yet. I can't recommend this place enough! read more

I love love LOVE pet kingdom. The store is massive on the inside with super friendly staff. I bought a tokay gecko here the other day and two men helped me purchase my new aggressive little friend. I don't recall their names but both of them had beards (one of them with a beard held with rubber bands and the other with just a brushed out long beard and long hair) and were in the reptile section. They were both super friendly and funny people. I highly recommend coming here for pets that are in great health for great prices as well. read more

If so, visit this large/expansive store that also sells lizards, snakes, crickets, frogs, turtles, spiders and oh so much more. This place is big! It is designed to help you look for what you want/need ...fish on the left, reptiles on the right. In between pet food, supplies (including everything needed to care for your current or future pet) and many items that are truly hard to get such as live worms. Knowledgeable friendly staff roam the aisles offering help and answering questions. When I visited it was feeding time for the geckos and the handlers were cleaning cages. These colorful creatures were handled gently as cages were cleaned. Not to be missed is Lavender, a not for sale 23 year old albino python. What a beauty! There is a lot going on at Pet Kingdom and if you are looking for an exotic creature/pet I'm fairly certain you can find it here (think tarantulas of all sizes or the tiniest of crabs.) Prices definitely depend on what you are looking for and seem reasonable. Some aisles are narrow and hoses /buckets blocked me from getting close to some of the aquarium fish (though I'm certain I could have asked staff to move them out of the way). There were a few tanks that had dead fish and some of the snake habitats seemed way too small. The store in general could use a good clean Overall the animals appeared well taken care of. I didn't buy anything this time around but I will be back when I have space for a koi pond. read more

We've been coming to Pet Kingdom pretty frequently these days since we started a pond. Everyone here is very friendly and knowledgeable, also pretty laid back. They'll answer all your questions and will probably have anything you need supply-wise for pretty much any animal need! (Hence the name Pet Kingdom I imagine ...) They can get very busy especially on weekends so keep that in mind when you plan to go. Depending on which direction you're coming from, getting into the parking lot can be a bit challenging as well, but not impossible. Thanks guys! read more

San Diego is so lucky to have Pet Kingdom! I've been coming here ever since I was a kid, it was where I bought my gecko in middle school and all of his supplies. The staff here cares deeply about the animals, and they are well taken care of. I especially love their aquarium department. Recently purchased some frogs and they acclimated very well to my tank. You can tell how clean and well maintained the tanks in the store are. There's also a variety of plants and rarer fish. The bettas look much healthier and livelier than ones I've seen at chain pet stores, I think they must rotate them through larger tanks because I've seen bettas in their community tanks too. The older guy with a pony tail acts like you are an inconvenience based off the way he literally walks away from you as your asking him questions (also very blunt 1-2 word answers). Honestly there is really only one person I interacted with in the whole store within the multiple trips I made there that was genuinely helpful and nice. Don't know his name but is a younger guy with blonde hair. He answered all my questions about my new snake and was super helpful on all equipment I needed! The employees could work on their customer service. Otherwise, they have a decent selection of stuff, more animals than supplies in my opinion but I'd say 50/50 chance of you getting a nice employee who acts like they enjoy working there or even want to help you.
