There are no words I can think of that can accurately portray the seething hatred I have for this place right now. With a rather large, rather heavy box, I ran as fast as I could the almost half-mile of distance between my apartment and this post office Arriving at 5pm on the dot, sweating, panting, and with my body and legs about to collapse from exhaustion, I was greeted with an employee telling me they are now closed. Now having walked back to my apartment with said box, my feet are literally numb, my body soaked, and my brain furious. If anything good came out of this experience, it is that I finally had the motivation to sign up for a yelp account. Thank you for making nightmares come true. As a small business owner and full time employee I have to visit this station often. Please anyone visiting this post office, PLEASE for the sake of humanity read my review so people dont kill you in their mind three times before you leave the window. First of all, there should be a damn rule that at 9am people such as retired people, housewives, etc who have all damn day to go to the post office have their own line and people who need to get to work yet have a package to pick up should have another line. NOTHING is worse than being on probation at work for being 5 minutes late and standing on that line behind someone who has the whole damn day to go there digging through their bag as they stand at the window. SRSLY! Please have all your crap together before you reach the window. That means.. orange card in hand, ID out OR package ready to be sent and wallet out ot pay for it to be sent. Please also dont stand there at the window when there is an out the door line behind you an two tellers trying to shoot the crap with the teller. WOOLSEY STATION please keep the flat rate priority boxes stocked. I swear I get there at 9 and it looks like the post office has been open all day right before xmas. Stock it up! This place is terrible. A few weeks ago I was waiting for a package and they did not even try to see if I was home, and they just put a note on my mail box to let me go to pick the package at the post office. Then, I went there and they told me "I am so sorry, I think we lost your package". In addition, they never deliver any packages how they are supposed to do... they do not even knock the door and just put a small pink note in the mailbox, forcing you to pick up the package the NEXT DAY. read more

I have had consistently bad experiences here. Today, around 3:45pm, the self check out for packages was not accepting cards, so I had to wait in the line, which threw off my timing and I was running the risk of being late to work. I already had a flat rate box packed and didn't have time to bring it home rather than wait in line. When I got to a window, I apparently did not set my package down on the scale to the attendants liking, and she chided me rudely for 'throwing' it. When I said I was just in a hurry and was sorry, she continued to berate me over the package. I said I was in a hurry again and I would just like to continue, and she responded that she couldn't deal with my attitude and refused to help me. She closed the window and walked off, ignoring me like it was a preschool playground, while other people were still waiting in line. When I persisted, she said the other teller could help me, who was already helping the person in line behind me. No manager in site to speak to, and she also was making fun of me visibly to her coworkers. I find this behaviour unacceptable. There are long lines at this office. This location obviously cannot handle the flow. But clearly some of the people behind the counter work much faster than others. There used to be the nicest mailman on my street for years, but sadly, that is no longer the case. Now most of the personnel appears frustrated, almost hostile. Letters are frequently mis-delivered, I often receive personal letters or packages of neighbors on my street. The mailman will not deliver my packages: electronic re-delivery service requests are ignored. It is impossible to complain, this office is unreachable by phone, when I went to complain in person a rude clerk raised her voice to me and told me "it is not their area". Well, I had to jump on this bandwagon of opinions; In 1994, I was injured at work, so of course there were legal documents which needed attention... Unfortunately, Woolsey station P.O. lost my legal docs even thought I paid for certified mail. I filed a report with the woolsey station manager at that time, then needed to redo my legal documents ... including rush to meet a deadline because they "lost" my docs. Fast forward two years, they found my documents covered in dirt and dust. That was "94. Every time I go to this place I wonder if these postal people are whipped and starved in the back by their supervisors. They are so miserable. Just this last October 2012, I and others were standing ON LINE when we heard the letter carriers behind the wall making ready their days deliveries,. as well, someone was filling the P.O. boxes... their conversation was loud and one guy with a spanish American street accent cursed, so I said out loud "we can hear you out here", he said "oh in that case, I had my g"dam mutha F"n paperwork all F"d up". Which goes to show that woolsey station just does not have to care about their work and our mail. There's no accountability. Our civil servants are neither "civil" nor have a "service" attitude. However.... One woman was very helpful although was very curt and harsh about it. I think that our postal service need to assess how they treat their employees. Terrible service. I only wanted a PO Box and completed most of the process (even payment) online. Went over to finalize it and was greeted with "oh noOooOo" as soon as I handed over the (already completed) form. After complaining a couple more times, the employee went and got someone else to just tell me that my form of ID looked "altered" and that I needed a new one. I had no option but to leave. Our packages regularly go missing. Especially when they are for our toddler son. It's disgusting that a government entity like this is so comfortable in failure. They are never any help and you can't reach them by phone. When Amazon and others start using drones to deliver all of our packages, this service will no longer be needed, and it will be completely their own fault. read more

There are a couple of friendly and helpful employees here, so I'm going to be nice and give a star just for them. I don't get mail for days at a time, followed by a day that my mailbox will be stuffed full. Suspicious. My job doesn't allow personal package deliveries, so when I don't get to choose the shipper, I inevitably have to come here to pick those up. They're typically not available until 3 days after I get the slips. Why not just be honest about the pick up dates? My favorite experience here was one time when I was called up to a window, then the guy turned around and walked away and... just didn't come back. I waited about ten minutes for him to return, and during this time 3-4 people that had been on line behind me were seen by the other employee. Luckily some kind soul saw my situation and let me go to the other window when it was his turn. read more

UPDATE: 12/24/2016: Yesterday, a package with a one of a kind antique I bought for my girlfriend's birthday was delivered to my address at 6PM with signature confirmation, but to who, I don't know. I was here all day playing king's quest with her, but never got a buzz, and the package never appeared. When I went to the post office to ask them about it, I was told when a package tracker says "delivered" all you can do is file a claim, and that the system doesn't show the signature of the person who signed for it. So by signature confirmation, the USPS means someone, presumably in our country, signed for a package, and that it was left somewhere. Could be anyone, anywhere, but someone signed for it, but don't expect for them to tell you who, where, or to show you the signature if requested. Have any gifts or letters for me sent by strapping them to the back of a wolf, then push something that smells like me in its face. That's gonna be like, 200% more reliable. Update: 12/08/2016: This is the second time in less than a year that a I've found a "Notice left" note on my only delivery tracking, only to discover that no notice was actually left, and I now have to wonder if some stranger got my notice and if they will be trying to pick up my package before me. Or, more likely, they didn't bother to even deliver a notice either time. YOUR ONLY JOB IS TO DELIVER MAIL. WHY ARE YOU SO BAD AT THIS? Original review: The absolute worst. There's always a crazy line, the self-service machines are always out of order, and my mail is routinely delivered to the wrong address, late, or completely lost. The USPS is like that kid in school who's pretty lazy and slubbish, and turns his papers in a few days late, if he turns them in at all, then wonders why he's failing. Media Mail - a book is not a book?! I went in to mail a book via media mail and was asked what kind of book it was. I told the post office lady it was an art book - a book of photos. I was then told that it does not qualify as media mail. Why? because it has photos in it and it should be for educational or resource purposes. I then informed the lady that it is for educational and research purposes. She would hear none of it and made some claim that she was only doing her job. I started to get angry, wanted to inform her that in fact she was not doing her job... but wished her a nice day and left. I figured I would take it to another post office and save myself the pointless argument because she evidently was not wanting to hear me. I got to the front door and decided to do as she had recommended which was to look at USPS website policy on Media Mail. The very first qualifier is "Books (at least 8 pages)." full list is below, copied straight from their website, and it does not say anything close to what the lady was trying to tell me the policy said. so i went back in, a different lady helped me. She also refused to ship this book media mail for me. She said it has to be for educational purposes. people use books like this to educate and enlighten themselves i said. she said it wasn't a book. If I could give this branch of the post office no stars, I would. I get that USPS is suffering- I really do. Yet this doesn't excuse misplacing a parcel containing $1k+ of jewelry (marked as "delivery attempted" when delivery was never attempted- my doorbell never rang, no one ever knocked), never answering phones (more phone support = less people in your post office = less covid spread), and leaving an irreplaceable print marked "awaiting delivery scan" with no other info for FIVE DAYS. Things are hard right now. It's the holidays. Don't make me ship gifts with FedEx or UPS. I want to support the USPS but that seems like a terrible idea when you guys consistently lose my packages. read more

Nastiest customer service I've ever experienced at a post office. Tried to purchase additional postage for international mail (thy I've done before) and instead of the rude teller selling me the additional postage, she tells me I need to add return addresses to the cards (my bad) and get back in line. I asked her why she couldn't just sell me the stamps and I can update the envelopes on my own and add the stamps. She said "I have to write something on them." BS. I've mailed international mail before and aside from "air mail", you're not writing anything, lady. You're just trying to make my life difficult. I really wish they would shut this place down, the people working here have no business getting paid to be as nasty, unprofessional and frustrating as they are. I have literally driven to post offices further away (although I'm a five minute walk from this one) to avoid them and will continue to do so. read more

This place makes me want to stab myself. I honestly dread going here more than I dread going to the gyno. Like the people said before me, they really need to make a special line just for the people with the orange postcards (this is what the mailman leaves at your door when they come to deliver a package but it needs your signature). It's really unfair to have to stand on line behind 7 little old ladies from Greece who dont speak a word of english and are there to send packages to all their grandchildren in other countries. It kills me that most of the people in front of me on line are not PREPARED to actually send their packages. It also kills me that there are like 2 people working, if you're lucky, and it seems like they PURPOSELY move slowly to piss you off. I'm bitter as hell, because the last time I was there, I was standing on the line for SO long that my meter expired and I got a $35 parking ticket. Why am I not surprised to see this post office has a 1 star average rating. Here's just a tiny bit of the fun I've encountered in my years going here: - There are six windows. I can say with the utmost certainty there has never been six employees working at them at the same time, not even around holidays or Tax Day or other mail-heavy periods, not even when the line is all the way out to the front door. - I used to sell on eBay and before they put in the automated machine, I had to go to the windows to mail everything. I would see the same employees almost every week for over a year and, with the exception of two very nice women, the others all acted as if they never saw me before in their life, were always surly, never said hi or anything. We don't need to make small talk but at least act pleasant when I'm doing the same and we see each other every fucking week. The last time I was at the window, I managed to have an entire transaction without either me or the guy saying one word to each other. NOT ONE WORD. I had to look at the credit card machine to find out the total because he didn't seem like he could be bothered to tell me. - Usually I'm able to escape the unpleasantness of human interaction by using the machine, except for the times where it's not working. And there are no signs posted anywhere. And yet there's still a line of people standing there to use it because only PARTS of the machine work - so you'll be trying to mail a package and then when it's your turn up, you see it says, "Sorry I can't do that right now" and it can only look up zip codes or buy books of stamps. - Some of the employees are morons. Unsurprisingly, these are the ones I don't see around for very long. Given my eBay history I'm moderately knowledgeable when it comes to shipping and postal rules and all that but you would expect a trained USPS employee would know all the same stuff and then some. However, on more than one occasion I've had to explain basic things to them like what the maximum dimensions are for different classes of mail when they tell me I can't mail something a certain way or what it means to ship something bound printed matter. Usually this follows with them asking someone else what to do, one time they even looked through a USPS guidebook to figure out if what I was saying was true [it was because why the hell would I lie, it's all information anyone could get from the USPS website]. Meanwhile the line continues to build and the longer I stand at the window, the more of an ass I feel for holding people up, but you would think knowing exactly what I wanted would be better than the people who get up to the window and go, "Duh, I want to mail something, what do I do" and then go back and forth six times to the window filling out the wrong forms. - To be fair, some of the customers of this post office are absolute morons as well. I understand the language barrier since there are usually a lot of Greek and Middle Eastern people sending things overseas. I even understand the old people who never really know what they're doing in there or probably how they even got to the post office in the first place. Even though those things still annoy me, it's things like this that make me wonder how the clerks just don't rip these people a new one: Customer: How much does it cost to mail a letter? Clerk: In the United States it would be $.44. Customer: How about to Maryland? Clerk: Uh, still $.44 since that's in the US. Customer: So is it different to Washington? Clerk: ........... Customer was an adult white woman who spoke perfect English, overheard that gem while I was in line. There there are the people who use the automated machine but stand there for 20 minutes because they have 20 manila envelopes that they have to weigh and print postage for separately and they've clearly never used the machine before and feel the need to read every last word on that screen that asks if your package contains any of the following hazardous materials all 20 times it comes up and oh my god I'm standing behind them about to strike them with a frying pan. Word to the wise: if you have a ton of packages and have never used the machine before or know you're pretty slow, then do us all a favor and go stand in the regular line because someone standing behind you just may beat the shit out of you. - When there's a problem and the clerk tells you to go knock on the door around the corner, you might as well just go home because no one's ever coming out. I've seen people knock on that door the entire time I was standing on line [15+ minutes], only to become more and more irate to the point they start screaming like lunatics for someone to help them. CONTINUAL PROBLEMS DUE TO SHEER LAZINESS OF THEIR EMPLOYEES. I rarely write reviews, but I've now had multiple issues with this post office. Their website says my package has been "Delivered" at 4:05pm, for my 'guaranteed 2-day delivery'. I got home less than 10 minutes later and found nothing. There is NO SLIP on my door noting they'll attempt redelivery tomorrow, or to have me pick it up at the post office, nothing. I went to the post office to ask about it. First, they blamed ME and said to check with my neighbors (which I had already done). Already irritating. Obviously I did that first, or why would I be here? Then they looked for the package, didn't find it, and told me I need to come back and check tomorrow. WHAT. This is ridiculous. Why would your tracking records list the package as "delivered" when it WASN'T?? And when it isn't delivered, why wouldn't you leave a slip with direction of what I need to do next?? So not only did they put false information into their records AND were too lazy to leave a pink slip, but ALSO if I hadn't shown up at the post office to ask about it, I never would have known they weren't even going to bother to redeliver it the next day!! They weren't even planning on communicating that to me! And this kind of crap has happened more than once now. This is your JOB. Do you know what would solve a lot of the confusion here? How we could avoid these mistakes altogether? By you ACTUALLY DOING YOUR JOB. Alright now listen: I work in customer service, and I know it can suck, so I'm pretty forgiving - a mistake here or there, ok, no problem, we're human. But this goes beyond human error. This post office messes things up CONSTANTLY, and the more it happens, the more it is apparent that it's due to SHEER LAZINESS. That is INEXCUSABLE. read more

The workers at this location are probably the rudest, most unprofessional, miserable group of individuals I ever had to deal with, specifically the female staff members. whe all can agree that a visit to your local post office can be stressful and a real pain in the butt due to long lines and evil subhuman postal clerks who should be happy that they have a job that requires not much brain use. this particular post office on 31st street gives me hope as the clerks are friendly and professional with your postal needs. the lines move fast , counter area to fill out forms is clean and well stocked with supplies. i was able to ship my packages on time before christmas and the asian gal postal clerk was the total opposite of the foul digusting clerks at the 38th st post office in manhattan as she took pride in her job and care with my packages. i am giving this postal branch 4 stars and thats a bit of a shock for me as the vast majority of post offices are total sh#t holes with sh#t head workers who are as worthless as a 3 dollar bill. read more

This is seriouly the WORST post office I've ever had to deal with and i've lived in Astoria for over 5 years. I've lived in various places in Queens and the city so i have places to draw examples from and i've never had these sorts of issues at other post offices. I have Amazon suscribe and save so I expect a package or 2 every month for household items. I don't think they actually attempt to deliver packages most of the time. I work in an office during the week; but my husband works from home - we get a surprisingly high amount of orange slips for package pickups when there is usally someone home during the times they deliver packages. Re-scheduling deliveries is a joke - when I schedule one rarely do they actually re-deliver. I end up having to head to the post office on a Saturday (since its the only time during the week that i can get there) to wait in those horrendous lines to pick up a package. When i ask the tellers why or if the re-delivery service is even operational I'm just met with blank stares. Come on this is delivering mail it isnt rocket science. I have not had mail delivered on Saturday regularly in a few months. The mail arrives at all times of the day during the week. A couple of years ago, you could set your watch by when the mailman was delivering the mail. Sent emails with zero results. Have had two packages delivered to the wrong address in the past week and was lucky enough to have neighbors kind enough to deliver these heavy packages to my home. Contacted USPS by phone and through their online process and nobody has even bothered to reply to me. This is clearly a carrier/local and recently developed issue, because I have been living in the same address in Astoria for 30+ years and it is only over the past year that I noticed a drop in service and in the past few months that it has really gotten out of hand read more

It's never crowded, the workers are NICE, so much so that I feel I'm in some random small town in the middle of nowhere. I get packages sent to my mother in laws house because she's always available to receive them lately the carrier doesn't even bother and doesn't leave a slip. The latest delivery was to be made Friday from amazon, i left work early so I could be there when it came. it never did, I called Amazon on Sunday to let them know I hadn't received it. Terrible service. I'm unemployed at the moment, so am home all day. The lazy carriers don't knock or ring when carrying a package, which forces me to go 10 blocks to pick it up myself. When I tried to call, the "answer" was some awful screeching noise. In the past, they have not delivered mail carrying large checks. I only knew this because I expected this mail. I had to get the checks resent with a delivery confirmation. The missing mail has never arrived. I've filed a complaint, so they are being investigate. read more
