This is another US post office that will have one person behind the counter and 15 people in line. I honestly feel bad for that person, she's not responble for there only being one person and she has to deal with 15 angry people who have every right to be angry. The postal service raises the prices on everything, has a terrible service now and then complains that they're not getting support or that they're on their way out of business. Well, just walk into a one of their locations like this. You see why people hate going to the post office. On the plus side the lady was very nice and again, not her fault. I never thought I would write a Yelp review about a post office, but here we are. I used to be a big fan of USPS. I even worked in the mail room in college and got pleasure out of making sure mail went to the right person. A little over two years ago, I moved into my current apartment. I noticed pretty quickly that the letter carrier would make frequent mistakes, often delivering mail meant for a neighboring building or even a different street. They also delivered mail for former tenants. I couldn't fault them for not knowing who has or has not moved away, so I tried putting a post-it with a note on my building's mail box. That did not help. I even tried circling the name of one mail recipient and specifically noted that he had died (which I learned from a simple Google search). Incredibly, the letter carrier ignored that as well. I have finally started Googling the companies that are sending this mail and calling them to let them know that the people they are trying to reach no longer live here (and may have passed away). One would think that after multiple requests followed by a series of complaints, USPS would find capable employees, but that has not happened: the deceased former tenant still receives mail here. Recently, a package that was sent to me was scanned as delivered, but it was not in my mailbox or on my doorstep. I strongly suspected it was delivered to the wrong building. After I made a complaint to USPS, they located the package and brought it here - a week later. Thankfully, it was neither perishable nor anything I needed urgently. Last month, I got home from work one day and opened my mail box to find mail that was wet and dirty. It had not rained that day; the mail must have been dropped in a puddle, and rather than drying it off, the letter carrier delivered it as is. Perhaps the most troubling instance, though, is from a year ago, when USPS failed to deliver my ballot for the general election. I had to vote in person on election day (which I was thankfully able to do). No one answers the phone at this USPS location, and when I visit in person to bring them all the misdelivered mail, I am told that they will talk to the letter carrier. It has become evident that they are just not interested in taking responsibility for their mistakes. The sheer incompetence of this USPS office is mind-boggling. It is remarkable how little attention to detail the postal employees at this office pay. How is this tolerated by USPS? read more

I placed a hold on my mail and was notified that my package was picked up. I did not pick the package up yet. When I got to the post office to retrieve my mail they just gave my package away to someone and never even checked their ID The gentleman with red glasses said that they would contact me upon an investigation. I'm here right now and the one person at the counter is trying to resolve a customers issue and just went to the back and has been back there for over 10 minutes. Had to mail a letter, and visited this office. I was 2nd in line. When it was my turn the clerk says " this woman is next" as a lady enters the lobby. It's her friend. They begin talking about work, as the new arrival places a documents box on the counter, and takes out about 75 legal envelopes. this is the most worthless place I've ever been to. they're always closed in the middle of the weekdays. you guys don't need a whole hour to be closed for lunch. there should be at least 2 people working at a time to alternate lunch breaks which is how it's supposed to be in every other business in existence. I finally make it over to the post office on my day off only for them to be closed. every single time. doesn't matter if its wednesday at 1pm or Thursday at 3:30pm its always different times between 12-4pm during the week when I try to get something mailed and they're always closed somehow. make it make sense. read more

Updated this review to make it better because they hired more people! Now there's usually two people at the counter, so even when there's a line (which there usually is because this is a pretty busy post office), the wait is not nearly as long as it used to be. One of the new staffers is just the bees knees! She's friendly just like the previous-existing staff but she's especially on top of her game, so fast, upbeat, and efficient. Go to one of the other Berkeley POs. The two on Solano are particularly good. The lady at the counter here rather rudely tried to tell me it would cost $15.00 to send a birthday card to Australia. Went to the Solano PO and it was $5.45. Not sure if they're shady here or just incompetent. read more

The folks working the counter are nice and helpful. But the folks running it are as dumb as they come. Every December for the last 10 years they run out of stamps. Every year. 9am today with 50 people lined up for service, 1 person working the counter. Middle-aged Asian male manager walking back and forth behind the counter doing nothing. This is my 2nd time at this post office and both times they had their window shut during business hours with no sign up anywhere as to why- only after calling out and knocking on the device window did some one come out saying they were having "computer issues". I think this is their way of getting rid and of customers who they don't want to deal with. This will be my last trip to this branch and I hope for everyone else's sake this branch closes (or gets new management)- so many headaches and frustrated customers I see on other reviews. On my past two visits, a counter person there before lunch has been the friendliest, kindest, most efficient USPS worker I've ever encountered. Great Post Office! They have a parking lot in the back and given that parking is in high demand in that area, it's SUPER CONVENIENT. The staff is EXCELLENT. The place is always bustling and unlike other post offices, this location usually has 2 or more clerks working at a time. Another GREAT feature is not having to wait in the regular line for packages. You can ring a bell and a different staff person helps retrieve packages. read more

Horrible service and the workers don't know what they're doing. Long lines and they have one person working the desk. They run out of stamps and honestly everything else. This is as worse as it gets. I got helped by a Black lady who was far right on the counter and she had no idea what she was talking about. I try not to go to the post office but, unfortunately on the 8th I had to return a package. When I got there, there was a long line. I got there at 2:35pm. The wasn't the post offices fault. But, their communication with customers was very poor. And I didn't get out of there by at least 4: 15. The cashier was not happy, understandably but, I am not responsible for her issues or her bad attitude. When I got to the register i greeted her and she just looked at me and said nothing and also said I could have put in some box but my package didn't fit in any mail box so I don't know what she thought she was talking about. The customers were of course not social distancing. Even tho their was signage everywhere. One woman kept getting directly in my space and then when I asked for my space. She rudely and stupidly replied that I wasn't social distancing, but she was the literal reason I couldn't properly distance myself. because she kept getting way too close and not just to me, she wasn't giving anyone space. I made my feelings towards people not distancing themselves very obvious so I'm not sure why she kept getting riding my ass. On top of that, there was a creepy old white man in the line ahead of me that kept looking back at me and staring multiple times. He even put his sunglasses on and continued to stare as if I could tell he was looking at me I ended up staring him down as he was doing to me, smiled and waved and asked what his problem was obviously irritated. Him and another old white man thought it was funny. And of course didn't have the balls the to give me an answer and just turned and laughed. It was gross as the majority of them are already. He was even looking the girl in front of me up and down and I wanted to throw up. read more

I needed a post office for a quick birthday drop off. This was in my path but I was leery of the awful reviews. Apparently so was everyone else because there was NO line. When does that ever happen? I did wait a moment just because Alma behind the counter was so helpful to the woman ahead of me. She suggested that she repack was she was sending in the smaller size box to save $. She offered the customer packing tape and scissors which the woman already had but it was a kind gesture that doesn't always happen in most post offices. When it was my turn Alma was quick and efficient and I was out in less than five minutes. I was even able to get a decent and reasonably priced greeting card. This is a pretty good place, as far as I'm concerned. Taking into account that there have been massive cuts in staff, with most of the senior staff being bought out, the lines are a bit long sometimes, but they move. Package was delivered by the USPS from the 2111 San Pablo Ave, Berkeley P.O. Found it tossed over my fence breaking flowers, rather than entering through the gate a little way to the right. Wanted to complain and was told to call them when they opened at 9 a.m. The phone number listed for them on their website has been disconnected, so no way to contact them!!! The worst. My package was meant to be delivered on a Tuesday so I stayed home from work but the mailman failed to turn up on the day in question. When I checked the online tracking the status had been updated to 'alert: missing delivery scan'. So I called the 800 number and they said to go to 8th Street, that I would be able to find my package there. I hopped off the phone and down to 8th Street, but it quickly becomes apparent, from the 15ft wall and barbed wire, that 8th street iz the distribution center, so of course they don't let me in. I manage to wave down the guard and he tells me I need to call a number speak to his supervisor. But he won't give me the number, and he won't go fetch the supervisor. For the facility that's right in front of me. I Google the distribution center and try calling but the number is disconnected. So I head back into town, to an actual post office and show them the tracking number and information and they tell.me to call the number of the distribution center. I tell them it's disconnected and they give me another number but this one is permanently engaged. I try it multiple times over the course of the next couple of days, never getting through. I can't help but think it's off the hook completely. There is no answer phone just the busy tone.. Anyway, after a couple of days I go back to the post office and tell them I can't get through and suggest that they could give it a try, perhaps they have an internal number they could call from here?. I get a laugh out of the horrid old woman behind the counter: " If you can't find the package it's your problem. You should have brought the pink slip" "It hasn't been delivered. There was no delivery attempt so no slip, see it just says alert-" "Not my problem." "What should I do? Is there anything I can do??" "File a complaint if you're not happy" And she hands me an off-center, blurry, photocopy of a handwritten number. It's the 800 number again. So, anyway, it may well be that the distribution center still has my package but I will never be able to find out.. another one lost to the void of USPS. read more

Inept at it's finest. We went to pick up a package because we missed the delivery a few days before. We showed them the receipt and he goes back to look for the boxes. ...... 20 minutes later no boxes. 20 minutes? Isn't this shit labeled? He tells us that he can't find the boxes and that we should just go home and someone will call us when they find it. Never mind my questions about someone actually executing on this promise, how the hell do you lose 8 boxes which obviously saw our front door before heading back to the post office. As soon as we bring up the fact that we need the 8 boxes of important things another staff member pipes up "Oh wait....8 boxes? It's probably those things on the floor in there" Sure enough - he walked by our stuff at least 4 times and never checked them. When we do get them - SHAMBLES. One of the packages looks like it was run over (black skid marks and a completely crushed side) and the others are torn up and barely holding together. Maybe there's some nuclear holocaust going on that I didn't know about? Did they ship these boxes through another dimension? WTF happened? Last but not least - somewhere in transit our box decided to grow an inordinate amount of mold. Like "Did we pack some cotton in here?" proportions. This lends me to believe they are the creators and distributors of all mold in the NAFTA region. Moral of the story - USPS is the most disinterested, lazy, moldy pack of humanity you can ship your packages with. read more

They lost my package - an old family photograph in the original frame. 100% irreplaceable. I put the special tracking on it like the post office I sent it from suggested for something so precious. It said it was delivered. It wasn't. It never reached my doorstep. I called this location 11 times over 3 weeks, giving them all the information I had regarding the package and they said they'd make some phone calls and would call me back. THEY NEVER CALLED ME BACK ONCE I ALWAYS HAD TO CALL THEM. My last call with them they said there's nothing they could do. They don't have the package. They don't know where it is. I never got the package back. I will NEVER send anything using USPS again. I'll FedEx or UPS things from now on. 0/5 stars. read more

Gosh I hate this post office. I wouldn't go if it wasn't so close to my house. This place just has bad juju. The tellers are so stinkin' slow and they always seem understaffed. The weirdest thing is that I went in to mail a letter and the didn't put a stamp, but one of those barcoded stickers. The next day I got the envelope back with a stamp where the postage sticker was that either read "insufficient funds" or "returned for lack of postage." I brought the envelope in the next day and spoke with the same teller from the day before. He was rude and obnoxious. Minus 4 stars for "closing" the parking at 3:30. Yet another instance of a local post office (or shall we say fiefdom) making up whatever "rule" they want. Yo, the parking lot is there for the convenience of your customers! My small business spends $30K/year with USPS, and yet they have no clue who I am and refuse to allow me to park in the taxpayer owned PARKING lot after 3:30pm. Thanks for making it so easy to be a customer...! While I generally admire the USPS's ability to deliver so many mail items to so many rural towns across America in 3 days or less, I have to say that the physical condition of most post offices has become a national embarrassment. Station A is no exception. The retail displays appear to have all been vandalized sometime in the late-1970's with no effort since to repair them. "Signage" generally consists of pieces of torn paper with handwriting taped to various walls at strange angles. The stamp machines are always out of the most common denominations. Empty bins are only available on random days and there is no formal process for requesting them. The list goes on and on... Finally, let's add back 1 star. Most of the folks that work here are generally helpful. Unfortunately, they're saddled with a debacle that Congress has created by failing to make the hard choices required to right the USPS ship. read more

The employees here are generally friendly-ish and reasonably efficient -- but there always seem to be too few of them, so lines can be long. I think the staff here try a little harder than at other post offices in Berkeley. There is a separate window for package pick-up, and that can get you faster service if all you need is to pick something up (ring the buzzer) -- but sometimes no one is around to staff it, and you have to wait in line or at least wait for one of the employees behind the counter to have time for you. read more

I know people love to hate on the post office, myself included sometimes, but this location is great. Over the last 12 years or so I have regularly used 6 or maybe even 7 Post Office locations in Berkeley/Oakland and this is probably the best one. I do love the main Oakland one by Genova too, but it took like 5 years of going there a few times a week before I was ok with that place. I have never run into a single counter person here who was less than helpful or knowledgeable, which is pretty mind blowing to me considering the number of times I have had to argue over shipping methods or rates with counter people at pretty much every post office ever. Sometimes there are lines, but generally they go pretty quick and aren't any worse than any other spot. The biggest problem at any post office is the customers. People showing up with a garbage bag they want to ship, or not having the slightest clue which method they want to send something etc. are what slows down lines. This place is about as good as it gets when it comes to post offices, and while that may not be saying much in the big picture, I appreciate the courteous and fairly quick service I always receive here. Spend some time at the South Berkeley Post Office on Adeline, or the Piedmont Ave location and you will begin to realize you are living the good life when you go to this location. read more

After a few weeks, when my contact overseas did not receive it, he asked the local post office and found out the package had been opened in the US and the item stolen. The employees here are generally courteous and helpful, which I greatly appreciate. Albeit this station seems understaffed sometimes, it is not hard to notice the postal clerks are making an effort to provide good customer service. However, an organization is only limited by their leader. The "manager" of this post office is one of the worst I've seen after the one at Barnes & Noble Pleasant Hill, which had recently closed down. If it weren't for the hardworking clerks here, I would not have given this post office any credit. This woman had others (including a fedex employee) and myself wait for almost an hour for our packages, and when the fedex delivery guy tried getting the manager to ameliorate the situation, she flippantly told everybody to just wait a few more minutes and walked away laughing!! Most of the people in line were disgusted by the insult that they left. For the sake of the good postal clerks who work here, it behooves USPS to FIRE this so called "manager". I've had a box here for a few years. For the most part the service has been good but.... recently they lost a package. And they downsized the staff. No more package pickup window. The lines here can be so horrendous that it's astonishing, especially now that anyone picking up a package has to wait in the service line... I feel for the ONE person that seems to be at the counter. Sometimes there are (gasp) two postal workers on the counter if you're really lucky. Plus sides: Helpful (if a bit overworked and overwhelmed) staff. Convenient location. Negatives: The downsizing of the USPS and the shuffling of packages through different offices now causes packages to be late or even lost. For a few minutes, a second guy came, but then the girl went on break so it was back at one. Another post office run by SATAN. 666 is printed on all their receipts. I have been coming to this location for a few years now. In the beginning, Alma, the stocky, middle-aged Hispanic( clerk 33), was courteous. But then my online retail businesses started picking up which required more trips to the post office. Suddenly, the once friendly clerk turned rude! I don't know where that came from. I still treated her the same. So it wasn't something I said or did. Then on one visit, I picked up some priority shipping boxes the same size as my package which was wrapped in brown packing paper I was shipping that day. Alma asks "Is that what this is?". I told her yes. Then she proceeded to tell me I'm not supposed to use their boxes. So the next time I shipped a package like that, I requested Prority Mail which Alma processed. The next thing you know, my customer messages me saying the package( a 12"x18" print) arrived folded in half and bent on all four corners!!! Mind you, I used a black marking pen to write in BIG BOLD letters: DO NOT FOLD, DO NOT BEND. I have been shipping this type of package like this for years and never had a complaint from any of my customers before. The customer even attached a picture to show the damage! It looked like it was damaged on purpose! The exact thing I said not to do, was done! Now, who do you think did that? It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that out! Good thing I bought insurance. So my customer got her money back by filing a claim with usps. I also immediately notified the post office via their website, but all you get is their stupid automated response and nothing more! In doing business with them, I have observed that they are all average or below average in intelligence. All you need is a high school education to get a job at the u.s. post office. It's like Walmart. They will hire anyone who applies! I've also observed that Alma who was married to a Black man ( he died in HER bed)and has biracial children, gives Black patrons better service! She's way more courteous to them and tends to engage them in small talk while they're at the counter which she doesn't do with other races. I've also complained to them about THAT and only got their stupid automated response! But what can you expect from a company that apparently worships SATAN!
