When I first moved to California in August 2015, I brought a lot of things with me that I did not know if I would need. Where I was living, on Spruce Street, was close to this US Post Office in North Berkeley, so if I needed to ship anything back to Washington State - this is where I came. We would get flat rate boxes, and then I would fill and ship them as needed. Traveling past on foot a number of times, I saw the lines could be very long. So, I would think through what I really wanted to send back (introspection and prioritization) to reduce the number of times I needed to come and ship belongings to Washington State. Attempted to mail a box however, the post office was all alone with a note that stated will be back at 4:00pm, I check three different times starting at 1:00pm and no one was there. It must be nice to take a 3 hour lunch on taxpayer money pay. read more

the doors were opened so one can access the p.o. boxes. the service windows had no lines, didn't see any associates working. no closed signs seen. didn't check the hours. luckily, didn't need to send a parcel. the blue mail boxes outside are enough to satisfy my letters. read more

At the other post offices in downtown Berkeley and San Pablo, you just place it in the counter for pre paid packages. I've had them stolen before and they never started tracking! You make the experience for normal customers a pain to visit your business. This is a prime example of locations that should shut down. I do not recommend sending anything from here. I haven't been able to contact my post office in Berkeley, California, by telephone after reviewing a suspicious electronic mail (mail, the communication, rather than male, a gendered human) that indicated my PO Box for which I had paid through to next year, was up for renewal. I am in Southern California, unable to travel personally to the location to discuss the instance of Mail and Wire Fraud with them, and the security of my account. I was also unable to access my account after inputting all of my personal information, including security questions. The last screen with the submit button, indicated it was loading, but then caused the newly opened account to disappear, indicating a possible phishing scam. read more

Terrible service. I needed help to return my mail and the woman who works there had a terrible attitude. She didn't want to help me and scolded me. When I asked her whether one of the boxes could be used to return, she said "can't you see, it's too small" I had asked for her help and this is what I got. They don't care. read more

I'm writing this review b/c I lost $380 thanks to the incompetent and lazy employees here. Yes, I've had negative experiences with the tall man who works full time at this post office, who likes to condescend to customers as though they've never mailed a letter before... but this time around I am out of pocket $380!! I was shipping a package to China, and it was my first time doing so. Clerk advised me to send it 1st class, without checking with me what type of service might be best. I didn't say anything about needing the cheapest option, but she said "1st class international, good" and sped through the transaction. I paid. I asked for the tracking number on the receipt. "Oh" she said "No tracking 1st class international." I thought, I really need tracking b/c things can get lost overseas. 1st class domestic has tracking. So I asked to change to a trackable service and she said "Too late!" Wow, thanks for not asking any questions regarding my shipping needs. I left hoping everything would be fine. Guess what? Never got delivered. It was a jacket I had sold online and the package ended up lost or stolen en route. I had to refund the buyer in full. I have since learned that a competent employee will ask if signature is needed, tracking, insurance, etc...I've had excellent transactions since at the main hub in Oakland on 7th. Why can't customers expect that in Berkeley, CA 94709 for folks sake!?! Right next door to Chez Panisse and numerous therapists, no less! haha I hope all of the clerks here RETIRE EARLY! Some advice if you use the Shattuck Ave Berkeley station: Know exactly what you need in advance. Be prepared for moody, unhelpful staff who want you to kiss a$$ for some sad reason. read more

Ever since the complete change of staff a couple years ago, this PO has been the best. Service is efficient and helpful. One of the clerks is a Vikings fan, but I guess that's OK. Additionally we need to mail many packages and the USPS does a better job for us than UPS or FedEx. read more

This post office is rad. Because of work I have to go to it about 3 times a week shipping small items and documents. They're really efficient compared a lot of other post offices I had to go to in the past. They have the same 3 employees since I've been going there, and they don't make you fill out needless paperwork like the main post office downtown. They used to have numbers, so if you came in you didn't have to wait in a line, you could just sit down at a bench. But I think it's actually faster now cause not everyone is always ready when their number is called. There's no Saturday window service and they close at 5 pm. They don't have one of those self service machine (it got moved to the downtown post office cause not enough people were using it). If you're shipping large items, like some huge box I would use UPS or Fedex, but if you're shipping small parcels, books, documents, or things in tubes, then the USPS is awesome for that. Take advantage of those Flat Rate Priority mail boxes when you have to ship crazy heavy items quickly. read more

This is the post office nearest to my place, but it's probably the one I visit the least for some reason. Probably because I usually try to combine my post office trips with other errands that require me downtown. Small office, but it's usually not too busy and I treat myself to cheeseboard afterwards, so maybe that has just cause me to create a positive association with this place. Rude, condescending employees. I had to mail a box of books internationally, and they seemed to be particularly annoyed when I asked them about the best way to do that. Isn't that what you're here for? To answer questions? The box came back to me this week for lack of postage and incomplete customs form. How is this possible? Wow! Who ever thought that customer service from a post office could be so good? Miles above the service at the downtown Berkeley branch. The staff here have always been courteous and efficient. They take time to answer questions, and though to some their ability to quote from regulations standard replies, they do know their stuff and are really trying to help you. When they installed the DIY automated postage scale, they even had an employee in the lobby, out from behind the glassed-in cage, to offer to assist customers with using it. In my case, when I explained I had multiple packages with various weights and I wanted to use media mail (which the automated machine didn't offer as an option), she walked me through step-by-step with a workaround so that not only did I avoid the line that day, since that time I've been able to use it and avoid lines at other times. (Actually, she must have taught a lot of customers... lines are much rarer occurences at this branch during lunch hour (when I typically go). read more

I've held off writing a bad review for this place for three years, but today was the last straw. This place is run by unorganized morons. They close windows whenever they feel like. I've often seen one of the idiots (postal worker?) idling during peak hours with a growing line. One of the taller guys thinks he is particularly smart for rattling off memorized rules off the USPS website. His tone shows that he is clearly ignored and disrespected everywhere else and uses his USPS uniform to disrespect and exercise non-existent authority over customers when he can. They may as well shut down this horrid place and replace the idiots "running it" with mechanical automatons or robots that go "anything hazardous, flammable, bla bla." There's a reason why the USPS is in debt and there's a reason why it will continue to be run by disorganized morons: you'd have to be very stupid and moronic to keep repeating "anything hazardous perishable fragile..any lithium batteries gum fish nickels puppies kippers telescopes eggs..." UGH. Pay a dollar more and go to "You Send Me" on Walnut! read more

I've had many great experiences at this post office. Good, fast, and efficient service in a great location, close to food and shops in the Gourmet Ghetto. I just wish they upgraded the facilities, because the post office looks quite worn. This post office is STELLAR, especially compared to the Berkeley main office on Allston. I almost don't want to post a review and keep this place a secret. At around 11am, I found metered parking very easily and there was no wait time. The workers were friendly, knowledgeable, and efficient. I was in and out in less than 10 minutes (I'm sure the story would have been slightly different had I gone at a peak hour, like lunchtime). In any case, I've gone to the main office at various times of day, and no matter what there is always a ridiculous wait time. And this is after I've circled around downtown Berkeley three times to find a parking spot. I'm so glad to have found an alternative! read more

Extremely rude tall man working there loudly and aggressively ordered me around from the moment I walked through the door, not giving me a chance to speak or ask questions. Finally, I managed to get through with addressing my package, repeatedly asking that they make sure it will not be delivered without a signature. I walked out and decided to come back in and just check one more time that signature will be required for delivery, because as I was checking out, the man was talking loudly at someone else, and I felt it was difficult for anyone to focus. As I walked in, the man immediately started ordering me around again, in a loud and rude manner, again without asking what I needed or giving me the chance to speak. I told him that I felt constantly interrupted and that it was really rude, and thankfully he left me alone. It was very uncomfortable and upsetting. I then asked the person who handled my package whether indeed signature would be required, like I asked for repeatedly, and she said no. Good thing I checked!! I will never set foot in that post office again, terrible, shockingly terrible customer service. read more

Hate to waste time doping this, but someone has to say it. Witnessed a condescending postal employee rudely deal with an elderly woman today, who was having trouble with filling out a form. She'd done it incorrectly, so he brusquely sent her away to correct it without telling her how to do this. She was confused, leaving a form at his window. He yelled at her to come get it, sharing with his co-worker, "Now, she's not even listening!" He never considered, she simply couldn't hear him. Finally, I left what I was filling out, went and got the form for her. When she again went to ask him how to properly fill out the form, his response was to speak more loudly and impatiently. His intimidation seemed to work, as she said she'd just leave instead. When I mentioned it might work better to merely be nice to the woman, he replied, "I don't need a lecture, Sir!" As one who's worked in customer service for 38 years, the only response I can offer is to NEVER go there again. His actions have been mirrored by the 2 other employees I have had interactions with over the years, a tall man and a short woman. They appear at times hostile, disinterested, and oblivious to the fact that there jobs are nearing an end, primarily because they are so committedly unpleasant. I had a high expectation that the workers would be bubbly to me, but I just had to get used to the personality and the environment of working at a post office. It's barely five o clock and the tall, dark and rather average-looking clerk announces that he will not take any more customers, even though I am right by the window and the only person left in the lobby. Nice. After hearing him chide the customer before me, "Lady, hope you know this ain't gonna get there by Mother's Day anyway", I felt lucky that I had time to take my business elsewhere. The kind of "barely there", "I'm doing you a favor" type of service regularly dished out at this Berkeley post office is so tiresome. Mr. Post Master, are you listening??? Why don't you put these rude, slow moving postal workers out of their misery? Why use my tax dollars for bullet proof shields to protect postal workers who seem intent on doing as little as possible, as slowly as possible. Ah, the post office, scene of everyday (and cliche) frustration. Well, if you're lucky enough to have the North Berkeley office as your local branch, you're really in for it. The clerks are inconsistent, rude, slow, and, buffered by their needless bullet-proof class partition, completely without shame when giving you a "talking-to." Among other screw-ups, they've forgotten to round stamp a click-and-ship package of mine, which resulted in its loss for a month. I had to recreate and re-ship the package, all the while waiting for my postal refund which still hasn't arrived. Today, they blasted me with a lot of b.s. about my customs form, and when I questioned them (I ship A LOT, all the time, to destinations all over the world), dear clerk, Phyllis, immediately gave me such attitude that I had to defend myself, and, well, once I got the packages back from behind the bullet-proof glass I left that place yelling at them. Having worked in retail for many years, I know how frustrating the public can be and generally have sympathy for those stuck behind a counter. But these people are mean and stupid--and that's a dangerous combination. read more
