This tiny post office is one of the gems of the US postal service. It's visually a throwback to another era. I don't think anything has been changed in there for generations. Even for those of us who love cities, I think many of us still search for some sign of old world civility and small town charm amidst the hustle and bustle. The staff at this two-window old-timey seeming post office is friendly and personable. If you're a regular, they get to know you by name. They're patient too, especially with folks like me who want to see all the new stamps before deciding on which ones I'm going to buy. They get it that wanting a cool stamp isn't necessarily a frivoulous thing. Those envelopes have to look interesting, don't they? They're also nice enough to have tape dispensers on the counters for packages if you need it a little extra. While my hometown post office in Hingham is also friendly and accommodating, this Beacon Hill branch has the added charm of it's architecture and history. And frankly, it's just so darn cute! The venerable U.S. Post Office struggling. Stop in this branch, buy some stamps, mail someone you know a card or a gift and have a neighborly chat with the nice people who work these counters. [Update] Confirmed with main Boston USPS distribution center, where I was finally able to get my package shipped, that Kelli is making up rules, likely because she did not want to type up a packing slip for my international packet. There is no rule that an international package has to arrive within 30 minutes of closing, or that multiple clerks need to be present to process it. It took the clerk at the other location under ten minutes to fully process my package for mailing. I was also given a customer service number to lodge a complaint against Kelli. Original post: This review is directed to the employee named "Kelli," who refused to serve me, lied multiple times about why when I visited today, and is mentioned in at least one other review. I arrived shortly after 5:00PM tonight to mail an international package. When i got there, she informed me that she could not mail the package for me because multiple people are needed to process international packages. This baffled me. I have mailed international packages to family abroad many times - including at this location - and not once has it been processed by more than one employee. I asked her about this and she changed her tune and said I had come "too late" for her to process the package. I told her we had nearly half an hour for her to type up a simple shipping label. She told me because the store had a 2 person limit she could not serve me now because if someone else came they would not be able to mail their package given the "two person limit" for the location, and she could not let someone wait outside while she served me. I have waited outside to mail items before, and so have others. This is ROUTINE for this location during COVID. During this conversation, one employee and one customer - who she served - walked in. I pointed this out to her. And then she changed her tune and said "two customer limit." She continued to insist on a "rule" is that international packages cannot be sent after 5:00PM. I asked to see this rule and where I could find it. She called it a spoken rule. She also told me she is new and doesn't know how to process international packages quickly or where the rules are. I just searched reviews for this location and there is another 1 star review written about Kelli from almost 6 years ago! USPS - plenty of qualified candidates willing to do a good job in this pandemic. I didn't pay tax dollars for her to sit at the counter doing nothing and making up "rules" about why she won't work. Also, take a look at other reviews about this location that talk about "unreliable" hours (opening/closing later or earlier than posted times, "temporarily closed" signs put up at random hours during the day, or the "2 hour lunch breaks"). Frankly, you are probably losing money on an employee with SIX YEARS of experience who needs half an hour or multiple hands to process one international package. This is not the way I expect USPS to be functioning even though I want to support a government agency. If you don't fix this, we will start using alternatives like FedEx and UPS more. read more

I love this little post office! Each employee I've emmet has been pleasant and abundantly helpful! Occasionally the CC machine is down, but they try hard to make it known before you wait in line, while still attending to current customers. read more

Slow, unpleasant and they open after posted hours and close before noon- for a 2 hour mid-day break. Door has been locked during posted open hours- even before COVID. On 2 occasions when trying to mail a package at 11:00 am on Saturday they were closed. Unreliable business hours- something I've never seen at any other post office. At least post the correct daily hours on the door and website so you don't waste our time. And maybe the district manager can confirm the office should be closed for a 2 hour lunch break... read more

I went to USPS office to drop a prepaid package and get a receipt. I waited in line for a few minutes and when the customer ahead of me at the desk was done, I stepped up to the desk. The USPS employee at the desk named "Kelli" said to me in an extremely rude tone "next time wait over there before I call you" pointing to the spot I was standing at before. When I remarked that she was being rude, she gave my package back to me and said "go to him" pointing to a colleague to her left, who was already busy with a customer. As a result, I had to wait further. The customer service at this location is consistently terrible, other than this employee there is a man who is terribly rude. I went in this morning to mail out two prepaid packages with shipping labels already attached. I was pleasantly surprised by the lack of line (they are usually dreadfully slow). That's where the pleasantries ended. The woman working at the desk informed me that I couldn't send packages with opaque tape anymore. She said that they would place tape over mine and mail the packages, but that I would need to buy their tape in the future. I mentioned that was ridiculous and noted to her that I would probably be going across the street (to another shipping company) for my future business. She then refused to tape over my opaque tape and told me that if I did not buy their rolls of tape (which she denied were more expensive than other places--something I know is a lie), she would not ship my packages. She was incredibly off-putting and rude in this encounter, and I will not be visiting this location again. I would rather walk the extra distance to go to a less convenient location so that I do not have to deal with this employee again. Looks like I'll be buying stamps at CVS from now on. read more

Horrible experiencer on a rainy day. I checked on line that the post office on Charles Street in Boston was open. It was open regular hours today, Friday, May 1st 2020 according to the website. I walk down in the rain to the post office on Charles Street and as I opened the door the post woman (new to this post office) started yelling we are closed, we are closed, read the sign on the door. So the sign posted on the door (hand written) read closed 12:30 to 2:30. It was NOT 12:30 but 12 :20. She continued to yell that she was closed. Who makes this decision and why was it not posted on the website? I had walked down the hill with a large package in the rain so I decided it the US postal service was not going to be open when the said it was I went across the street to the UPS. After filing a formal complaint at the 800 number. I did receive a call from the Supervisor at Boston, who was well aware of Matt and his behavior and the details of the complaints against him. He as much as told me that "Matt owns that job - and has been removed several times for "training etc " due to complaints - but in Unions he has a "right" to that spot. Sorry state of affairs that we have to be abused by this employee and he does not get taken off the counter!!! I will keep it up and encourage others to do so. read more

I am currently looking for a job, so I stop in this post office frequently, and the staff are ALWAYS very friendly and happy to help. Each time I was there, an employee (I think his name is Matt) was extremely rude and condescending. One time that I was in there he was outright MEAN to the woman in front of me. I see that others here have written to complain about "Matt," the shockingly rude and mean-spirited postal worker at Beacon Hill's Charles Street U.S. Post Office. If you have had a problem with Matt in the recent past, then I recommend you call this number (800-ASK-USPS) immediately to lodge a formal complaint about him. I did. The process is quick and easy, and it's the only way to have Matt removed from his current position. That is, greeting postal customers. Let me back up. I have been using this post office for about two years, ever since I moved to Beacon Hill. It began as a very pleasant place to send off packages to family and friends around the country. Then, around the spring of 2013, Matt showed up. Immediately the quality of the post office plummeted. I witnessed on countless occasions Matt berating and belittling customers for asking the most innocuous and routine questions. I found myself also on the receiving end of his invective. I'm a Southerner, and I tried to stay polite. I wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt. But eventually Matt's behavior became intolerable. I finally stopped going to this location, choosing instead to walk farther to other stores or just opting for the convenience of UPS or FedEx. Then last week, after months of non-use, I went in to drop off a package that was a birthday gift for my wife's grandmother. I steeled myself when I saw that Matt was there to serve me. I asked what was the best packaging to use in order to get the gift to her two days hence. Matt cut me off and boomed in his loud but surly voice: "Select a package from the wall; then we'll talk." At that point, I lost it. In front of other customers, I complained that that was no way to treat customers, that he was completely out of line and that it was a wonder anyone continued to come into that store location at all. Matt immediately dismissed me, yelling, "Good day, sir!" He effectively kicked me out. Fuming, I crossed the street to mail my package from UPS, but I returned to the Post Office once I'd calmed down to lodge a formal complaint. After a further verbal altercation about his attitude, I had Matt get his manager on the phone. Matt pre-empted my comments by telling his manager that I had threatened him -- presumably because I mentioned that I was a veteran and knew a thing or two about the burdens of federal service -- then he handed me the phone. I made my complaint to Matt's manager right there. I wanted Matt and his female coworker, who had nothing to do with any of this, to hear my words. Then I went home and called someone at the regional office. That person told me it would be handled immediately, but he implored me to call 800-ASK-USPS to register what I had encountered more formally. I recommend you do the same. read more

US post office in the oldest historic district of Massachusetts makes for a charming and very welcoming locale. I live around the corner from this little spot and although I usually enjoy going to the post office as much as I enjoy going to the DMV, this place is an exception. I like coming to this post office, time seems to stop when I drop in, perhaps it is the "Charles Street" effect, or perhaps it is the super friendly customer service reps. Whatever it is everything about this place seems to gel. Mary and Brain are super friendly, usually strike up a quick conversation, and always look to save me some money on my shipments. Very efficient place for only having 2 registers, but go during peak hours and you are guaranteed to wait in line for a while. 5 Stars for the friendly people that work here. read more

I HATE this place!!! I have had several rude encounters - mainly with someone called Mary - she is a complete jobs worth - moaning about tape - no other post office ever has a an issue with my packaging - I also tape securely as I shop and return quite a bit of stuff. Her latest this morning was having to put my address details on a return package - which is not needed as the return label is already pre-printed by the merchant. I could also see she was asking other customers completely annoying questions - obviously doing her federal post office duties down to the letter!!! But not realizing this just makes her completely non-customer friendly and quite frankly makes me NEVER want to go this post office ever again. Which is a real shame in my own neighborhood - this person should be fired!!!! Soooooo annoying!!!! I will give my business to UPS or other USPS locations. read more

I do agree with most of the people writing about Matt. He is one different personality. I had an encounter with him twice and he just continues to be rude and unfriendly. On the other hand I went in there with a huge request to find my lost tracking number. I cannot believe people like Michelle still exist in this world. She went out of the way for me and helped me out. Now that's what I call customer friendly service. If I was the post master general I would promote her to a higher rank. This Post Office is in a convenient location but I stopped going here because one of the employees is incredibly rude. I was shocked the first time I went here because I wasn't expecting it. BTW, I don't EVER have issues with anyone because I'm a very easy going person but I am in complete shock about this man. He looks to be about 45-50. He is Caucasian and of average height. The "employees" do little here but belittle the patrons and treat them as if they are putting out these postal workers. It seems to be a game to them, but they should remember that we are the customers and without us, they have no business.
