Literally some of the rudest people I've ever met. I never write reviews but there have been multiple cases at this location where I have literally been belittled for no reason. This last time I was dropping off a package and I went up to the lady behind the counter before being called (my mistake). She rudely tells me that I need to wait to be called so I went back in line and when she called me up I wasn't able to hear her because of the glass she was behind. When I heard her and walked towards the counter she tells me "first you come up here without being called and then when I call you you don't want to come up, you're real intelligent" like....wow. Confusing hours. I arrived at 8:30am on a Monday after looking up the hours that showed it opening at 6am. No employees were present for several minutes. A man came to the Information window. I asked about the hours and he informed me that I need to use the official post office's website. The lobby/self service opens at 6am. The full service opens at 10am. Imagine hearing this at 8:45am. He instructed me to use the self service machine but I never do that without assistance because some aspects are confusing. To his credit, he tried to assist from the window but even he was confused about which printed labels matched which envelopes. So honestly, I don't know whether my mail will arrive at its destination. That aside, the place is just disgusting. A maskless lady came in sneezing. The employee said nothing to her about wearing a mask (the sign is still up). A homeless man waiting for information on his P.O. Box was harmless but very chatty with a lady waiting in line. I asked about renewing my passport in the past and was rudely told I have to do that on my own. Years ago, a lady was there with a service dog and security yelled at her. During the pandemic and before vaccines in Dec. 2020, the lines were dense with no social distancing until you got to the part with floor markers. Today there were huge flies and the place is just old and filthy - overdue for an upgrade. If the main place doesn't open until 10am, fine. But have someone available on request at 6am to help with questions in the lobby. Employees were there in the back. read more

Still the absolute worst Post Office branch in the entire United States, without a doubt. Horrendous. Rude. Mean. Incompetent. No AC or fans--stifling heat--between 95-100 F inside the lobby. Today took 75 minutes to mail one single overseas package. Clerk told me my service had tracking when it didn't--that was the customs #. Machine to print the label broke. No communication whatsoever. No social distancing coordination. Wrong information given. No one ever answers the phone, and on the rare chance someone does, they either put you on hold right away and never come back, or they just hang up. Employees standing around having social conversations when there is a long line of customers. One or two clerks maximum at the windows with 30 people in line. Regularly lose mail. Called the national 800 customer service number and after sitting through 15 minutes of prompts I chose the callback feature. Two hours later, I received three phone calls that immediately hung up on me as soon as I said "Hello?" How is this post office allowed to function worse than a third world country post office decade after decade?! Specific to this post office and only this one, I suggest having a "How I'm Feeling Today" card for each of the employees to display in front of their window so that each customer knows what kind of service they're going to get. I was here yesterday to mail in a passport renewal application. The employee there didn't even let me finish my sentence before she said "We don't do passports here, you'll have to mail it in" (literally what I was doing if she only just listened). The ineptitude of this post office continues to surprise me. I expected a package yesterday, which never arrived. When I tracked the package, I found that they tried to "deliver" it during a time when I was home. Not only did they not ring the bell, they didn't leave a slip in the mailbox. Today I went to the post office because the tracking information said the non-existent slip would include more information. I waited 30 minutes while the lone attendant on a Saturday (who was exceedingly nice) worked through a silly long line, only to discover the package wasn't at the post office, and she didn't know where it was. Later in the day when I checked my mail, I found 2 packages, a bunch of letters and catalogs, and a "Sorry we missed you..." slip. Someone had been home to answer the door the entire day, but no one bothered to ring the bell. I'm not sure why no one wanted to try and deliver my package. A mail carrier was in my building delivering other packages, but never tried to deliver this one. Now I need to take time off work to go to the post office and retrieve it. Dirty, cramped, poorly laid out, and slow, the 42nd St Times Square Post Office is unfortunately a model of poorly utilized tax dollars. I'll agree that this station is overworked and understaffed. It takes an unreasonable amount of time to get through the line, and the nose-wrinkling interior doesn't make the wait seem shorter. I also feel that this post office has more than its fair share of loud complainers in line. Even the staff appear tired and down trodden. Especially considering its proximity to the bus terminal that resembles the Mos Eisley cantina, the Times Square Station of the U.S. Postal Service is a refreshingly efficient and friendly outpost. Most of the time, there isn't much of a line. The employees have been cordial, helpful and professional, just like they aren't in so many other post offices throughout the city. (I'm looking at you, Brooklyn.) There are at least three working automated postal machines, as well, and within a block, you can catch a bus out of town, a donut at a national chain, coffee at a Canadian-owned franchise or a bite to eat after mailing your entry to the Publishers Clearing House Sweepstakes. I want to shoot myself to keep from going in here. I feel held hostage when they say they attempt to deliver packages, but don't. Then I have to go up to this wrecked place to try and get my mail which is like walking through hell covered in gasoline. Actually, that would be a much better alternative than dealing with these rude people. My post person has the worst attitude of anyone I've ever met. Just quit your job already, we get you hate it. When I'm out of town I come back to my mail just trashed - shoved down and crushed in my box. So rude. Oh, and when you complain, they wait a few days then deliver the mail they've held all at once so they can totally off on shoving all that mail down into your box. Why do these people work there if they hate it so much? Is that hard? I mean, you're not saving lives, you're delivering pieces of paper. Why does it seem so hard for them? She's also kept things I've ordered and had them sent back without even trying to deliver them. When I went to this post office to complain absolutely NOTHING was done. I've also caught her delivering mail and asked about all the problems and she acted like she was off everyone of those days. She must not have a job then. One lady at the Times Square branch is LOVELY, and super friendly, super-helpful....the rest...ugh!!! This total bitch today, older woman, gray hair, refused to scan my pre-paid Priority Mail item because it was dated two days ago. I printed the label on a Saturday, when they are CLOSED, took it to the post office Monday morning (ie. FIRST OPPORTUNITY!)...and she point blank refused to scan it. Now, I MAY be wrong, maybe it's just some absurd rule of theirs, but I'm 99% sure she was just being a cow. I've taken packages there before dated a day or two earlier than actual shipping day, and nobody has batted an eyelid. If you can, try to get served by Evelyn (I think that's her name...usually sits 2nd from the left!) and you'll leave with a smile on your face. Do NOT go to the miserable cow on the far left, nor the "older woman" if you can possibly help it! So, thanks unhelpful bitch. Thanks to you I've had an anxious day/evening praying that my priority mail package, containing irreplaceable items belonging to a client, and about ten hours worth of my work, would eventually get scanned "out the back". I've lived on this street for 10 years. This is the worst, saddest excuse of a post office. It looks like a prison and the employees treat you as a criminal. Heaven forbid you ask any questions. They are unprofessional and crass. I requested a mail forwarding and it online. It was a seamless process...or so I thought. They managed to not only stop my mail from coming to my address 2 weeks early but also have all that mail REJECTED and sent back to sender. Ms. Cofield a "manager" there has been unable to provide real assistance. Merely spewing out in a robotic/disingenuous tone that she's sorry and is looking into it. She has failed to call me back twice and I have to be the one to hunt her down, calling multiple numbers, staying on hold. If you have this experience you should file a complaint with the postmaster and the inspector general. It's time they cleaned house at this station on got some capable people working there. read more

I wish I could give this place zero stars. There might be just one lady here that's helpful. Every other employee is rude- as if I have personally defiled the graves of their ancestors. I wouldn't even be here so much if their carriers weren't such screw ups. I'm constantly getting delivered my neighbors mail... from several buildings over. Whoever delivers packages does not even bother ringing apartment numbers. Instead they see an empty lobby and then assume you're not here. There have been times where the carriers have checked the package as "delivered" on tracking and then end up not even showing up. Everyone who works the inquiry window just sucks. Every time I leave I want to give them a giant middle finger. Close this place down or hire service -orientated people. Currently waiting for a package to be delivered- originally was supposed to be delivered by FedEx. Until it was somehow intercepted by this god awful place. I asked a women behind the questions counter if I could borrow one and she said, "I just put four out in the basket." Mind you none of them worked. And then you try calling to talk to someone about it and it rings and rings and rings and rings with no answer! When i lived in the area I also had multiple issues I.e. Mail being "sent back to sender" when it was not even attempted to be delivered- or I'd get a slip telling me they tried and go pick it up, then I go there and they tell me it's out for delivery! The rudest women I have ever encountered work here. I had an Amazon package being delivered by USPS and received an email that they were unable to deliver the package due to an incorrect address. I double checked and everything was right, so I called Amazon who connected me with this USPS store as it's local to my office. A woman answered who over and over kept telling me the address was wrong. I told her it was not, and asked how I could get the package delivered. She said she needed the right address, I explained it was the right address. I repeated it many times for her. She asked me for the tracking number which I gave her, and she kept cutting me off, snapping at me that I was going too fast, and then mockingly repeating the numbers slowly as I said them. Finally she told there was nothing she could do by pass me off to the supervisor. I was put on hold for 10 minutes, then got dead silence and the line dropped. I called back, the same woman answered, I tried to explain that the line dropped after 10 minutes but couldn't even get the full sentence out as she started yelling "YOU NEED TO LEAVE A MESSAGE" at me. I went to say "it didn't let me leave a message" but she was already transferring me again. I waited another 5 minutes and still nothing so I hung up and called back. She answered, yelled at me again that all I could do was leave a message. She kept saying "I CAN ONLY TAKE A MESSAGE, I CAN ONLY TAKE A MESSAGE" so finally I said "great, I would love to leave a message, also what is your name" and then she hung up on me. I tried to call back and suddenly no one was answering the phones at all. I called the supervisors number again, and finally someone answered. She was just as rude as the last lady, I tried to explain to her what just happened and how rude the last woman was and she started talking over me saying "well you were probably insisting your package get delivered". I said "nope I wasn't, I was trying to get to the supervisor as she told me to and couldn't get through", but she also kept talking over me and interrupting and did not have a single care about why I was calling or what i needed help with. Then she asked "what is the address on the package?" and I told her the address and that it was correct and she said "so you have the physical package?" and I said ".... no, that's why I called" to which she replied "then you have no clue what the address on it says". So I said "then why would you ask me what was on the package?!" She just kept telling me I was wrong, I'm not sure what about when all I asked the whole time was how to get this package delivered. Finally I was transferred again to another woman who took my number, said she would track the package and then call me back. She called me back to say my package was out for delivery again... it's the next day and still no package. I have no idea what to do to get this package, I'm just assuming now that it's being held hostage by these horrible women who just want to ruin other peoples' days. The worst part is I couldn't even call back to complain, I tried and every time I ask to speak to a supervisor they immediately hang up on me. So you want your nationalized health insurance, do you? Well why don't you mull on that while you wait on the 10-20 minute line you'll encounter at this government service. There are 10 windows but only one or two will be open. A very perky employee circulates about the foyer and will ask what you're there for, directing you to queue at the lone self-serve kiosk if you're just buying stamps or mailing a small express or priority package, but if her ass was parked behind a window the line would move faster--a couple more self-serve stations wouldn't hurt either. It used to be a dump but they recently remodeled. There was a bit of a scandal, I don't recall the details, but some congressman caught some flack, though ultimately skated, for sending the contract for all NYC post offices to his businessman crony. And why does a post office need a costly wall of bullet proof glass? To protect the customers from going-postal employees? I hate having to go here and wait in line and I hate every government run service I've ever encountered excepting park rangers and some cops and fire fighters. And for the record, the mailman who delivers to my building is awesome, but when he's away there are always mix-ups. America is the most f*cked-up coountry in the world, except for everywhere else. read more

I've been here about 10 times over the past 3 months. The vast majority of these visits have been BAD experiences - usually at the parcel pickup & inquiry window - including: - Very slow service at the window. One person manning the window usually takes what seems like over 10 minutes to deal with each person's inquiry - Could not locate a package for which I missed a delivery, even though I had the exact confirmation/tracking number - Sent my held mail out for delivery even though I SPECIFICALLY requested the post office to hold the mail, and I would pick it up. The employee's response: "That happens sometimes." - After screwing up my mail hold, a USPS employee there gave me a phone number to call to direct further questions if I had any. The number he gave, (212) 502-0447 turned out to be a dud. After calling multiple times, all I got each time was a message that said "All circuits are busy. Please call again later" with no option to leave a message. Horrible service overall read more

The delivery person from this PO for my block doesn't five a flying f_ck about delivering packages and has failed to issue peach slips 6 times over the past two weeks. (Where does one file a complaint about this?) I guess life is hard and it is difficult to waste time to ring someone's doorbell in order to do her job. She also thinks her uniform is optional. It's gross. The post office itself is fine, but queues are always long, so print postage at home or use the APC. I set up a PO box last week, the process was quick (10 min.). If you're setting up a PO Box, go straight to window 6. If you don't have a peach slip from a failed home delivery, go to the automated stands and print out a tracking confirmation receipt, write your address on the back of it, then present it to the person at window 6. read more

I don't know why people are slamming the 340 West 42nd St post office so hard. Yes, the lines are long/slow - this is in the heart of Times Square, and the PO handles a crazy amount of volume. It helps a LOT if you go at non-peak hours. No, it doesn't smell. All the workers I've dealt are polite and knowledgeable. One in particular, a Hispanic woman is outstanding! She's the expediter for the PO - always on the floor, helping people. She's excellent, and maintains a great attitude despite being seriously overworked. Yes, there are not enough staffers working the windows, but I think that's an issue we need to take up with management, and the government in general. It's not the staffers' fault if the PO doesn't hire enough people. And it's not the PO's fault if the US Gov't doesn't give them enough money to do so. Honestly when I say this is presumably the absolute worst and most terrible place in all of New York City as a whole, i mean it. Apart from being in Times Square, these people clearly hate being employed and want to make this the worst possible experience ever for you. Living nearby.. any time I had to go to this place I had to mentally prepare myself and end up crying every time I've ever been. I have been there a large amount of times so this is not a bias opinion but me enduring 2 and a half years of this being my home base post office. The staff are a cluster of extremely rude, self entitled, over-dramatically mad over nothing always, and want nothing more from you but to feel their sorrow and suffering. I genuinely don't understand it. Even when going while barely anyone is in there it is absolutely dreadful. It forever is at minimum 85 degrees all seasons. You make appointments for the passport and they don't even have someone handling this and when they finally figure out who is going to help you the make you wait until the line is done. Rudely telling you every 5 minutes where to stand, a simple excuse me you need to wait here would have sufficed. No no no. Went here for the simplest thing ever. 10+ people in line, practically nobody behind the counter. The automated machine told me there was a $1 minimum - it forced me to buy a book of stamps AND THEN DIDN'T GIVE ME THE 70 CENT STAMP that I wanted. It took 7 minutes to print the book of stamps. Not surprisingly, the woman behind the counter completely ignored me when, after paying and waiting at the machine for SIX MINUTES, I tried to ask where the hell are my stamps? I said EXCUSE ME. Nothing. I rang the bell for service once. Nothing. Rang it again until she finally acknowledged that I existed. By yelling at me. Literally every other post office I've ever gone to is better than this one. If I had come here and found a sign on the door that said "go away" THAT would have been better. read more

Perhaps I visit at non-peak hours, but my experience has been perfectly fine. In fact, one employee in particular was so helpful, funny, and friendly, I was tempted to give them four stars. When manager is there they work fast. Otherwise they're too slow. Very slow. I've been there so many times to pick up my packages. Last time I spend 30 minutes they to look up my package from the storage where they keeps everything. Only to look up! Because they attempted 3 times and they said I wasn't home. Which it's NOT true. I was at home that moments. I saw delivery lady but she said no package for me. I'm positive sure they didn't tried to delivery my package even. I know them how much lazy they are. If it's about package they will just leave it at the post office to do not cary whole day. Unfortunately after 30 mins they said it's not at the office. If you live in a non-doorman apartment in NYC, you will find yourself at a post office. This place would be a hell hole, with 2 of the 10 windows open at any given time and a line out the door at lunch except for two things: If you don't fear tech the automated post box is a wonder and never has a line. There is a wonderful hispanic woman, who you know gets all kind of abuse, who does whatever she can to expedite matters. If you have the wrong form, she gets you the right one, if you have a question, she always finds you and answer. read more

i dont see much of a difference now and before when visiting a post office but now the lines are much shorter and the clerks seem to be a bit more civil which is why i tend to use the self service kiosk machine. stopped by on a tuesday morning to ship a few boxes of goodies to my friends in lovely chicago (non shooting area ) and i was in and out in less then 5 minutes and its wise to have the boxes sealed and labels on box for a easy smooth transaction . the self service machines are easy to use and its only plastic as machiines dont take cash . glad i dont have to deal with a postal clerk as much now and i assume they feel the same way .In the hell's kitchen section of Manhattan (42nd St) read more
