I went to the post office with my son to renew his passport. There was a long delay, so be prepared to wait at least 1-2 hours. However, the worker, Penny/Jenny, was very kind, respectful, and helpful. She apologized for the long wait and communicated with us throughout the process. She appeared to be the only one working, but she still handled everything with patience and professionalism. Overall, I had a pleasant experience because of her kindness and great customer service. read more

This used to be my go to Post Office when it was once 24hrs, back in the day. This is still a solid choice when in need of a Post Office that has flexible, extended hours. During my visit on a Saturday afternoon, my wait was 45 minutes. Which was fine, had plenty to occupy my time. Despite paying higher price's for shipping packages. My package which was going local to Queen's took over 2 weeks to arrive. If I am mailing off packages to the Southern part of the Country, it takes a week or so. The service left a lot to be desired, but that did not stop me from being thrilled to have my packages mailed out. The architecture of this majestic post office is on another level. The Corinthian colonnades, and the Imperial Coat of Arms of Prussia. This specific design is carved into a decorative, hexagonal ceiling panel, which is commonly found in historic government buildings, palaces, or university halls constructed during the Prussian era or German Empire. read more

Procrastination usually doesn't win out, but thank goodness for a USPS office open until 7pm on Sundays, even during the holiday season! In fact, the only station in the city open on Sundays and a lifesaver for those who started writing holiday cards on the Friday before Christmas. Peering into the "envelopes" mail slot, thousands of pieces of mail were visibly overflowing the sacks, requiring some gingerly wedging of my small booklet-worth of correspondence in between others. Fingers crossed all made it out ok! Shoutout to one of two staff working the two open counters at 5pm on Sunday December 21, you were friendly, prompt and helpful and put your best foot forward for terrific customer service. Only 2 counters were open and the line was about a dozen people long, steadily moving. For service--a solid 5 stars. Facilities are as expected a bit on the older side, being built in 1912 as part of the original Penn Station complex, though the modern conveniences of tap-to-pay technology and self-service weigh/postage stations are available. Waiting in line, the details on the ceiling caught my attention. Maybe because the darker evening outside accentuated the brighter interior, the simultaneously ornamental, scrolling flourishes fitted in repeating geometric patterns stood out in ways I hadn't noticed before. Come to find after some googling the ceiling is decorated with the country seals of 11 countries including the US, the countries part of the universal postal union at the time of construction, an administrative body now under the purview of the United Nations that handles international shipping policies. Not very fun facts: designated a national historic landmark in 1973 and re-named after James Farley, 53rd U.S. Postmaster General in 1982. Previously generically named the General Post Office. Slightly more fun fact: atop the facade along 8th Avenue the inscription reads, "Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds." Some may confuse this to be the creed of the U.S. Postal Service, but it's actually not. Rather, it's tied to the tribute that building architect William Mitchell Kendall paid to major historical figures credited with postal advancements. The majestic main hall of the James A Farley customer post office that has been Manhattan's main post office, formerly with access 24 hours a day with Automated Postal and window service 7 days a week, has had a real decline in services. As someone who has regularly used this post office for years given its easy availability, including with a P.O. Box there, it amazes me what has developed, especially since the building now also includes Penn Station's Moynihan Hall. Yes, they do have window service every day, but 98% of the time they're slow as molasses long lines because less than optimal staffing levels. Hey, USPS, this is the city that never sleeps, yet P.O. Boxes and self-serve Automatic Centers are now closed off to the public at night!!! Why? (Note - This is despite the faster than inflation, year-after-year increase in this location's P.O. 3.5 I think I've only been here once-- it wasn't exactly how I wanted to spend the first football Sunday of 2022, however, I had a 12PM passport appointment for my daughter. Again, as it was a Sunday, there were not many people, but there also were not much staff present, either. I saw two employee windows open, and one was for passports, which is what I needed. The appointments are in 15 minute intervals-- we arrived late, due to unforeseen train issues and while I thought it wouldn't be a big deal. (They have a list and I would suggest you make it on time because I think if there were more people, we would have been told we needed to book a new appointment). We had all of our paperwork and documents, but the process took a little longer than I anticipated. Also, they charged .50 cents per page to copy our documents, which I found to be a rip-off. The employee was friendly, which is sometimes hard to find at the post office, but thought the process could have gone by a little quicker. Also, I had a check to pay since credit card isn't allowed, however, he insisted I used my debit card, which would force me to buy their postal money order, to pay the state for my the passport. Overall, I had a decent experience here, In all actuality, it was a more pleasurable experience than when I got my first passport at the Downtown Brooklyn Post Office at Cadman Plaza and my renewal passport, which I did, last year, at the Rockefeller Center Post Office. I am writing about this post office simply to say it is there. I often wonder about train stations and airports, is there a post office there or not. It used to be easier to find these locations, but perhaps I have simply become old enough to be nostalgic for the past, as grumpy folks do (I'm 57 now). This is upstairs from the new train hall, the level where you would catch the train. From what I can see, having used it twice, it is not heavily trafficked. That is good, in terms of whether you will need to wait. In my neighborhood in Queens, the two options there always have lined and not enough clerks at the windows. So I am willing to lug a box into the city, to send before I take Amtrak. The space is actually cavernous relative to the number of people there. The building is worth wandering around in, take in the design, if you are into architecture at all. Other than that, this is a post office like other post offices. read more

This place is a hit or miss. I would come early (like when it opens) to avoid any lines because other there will be a wait. I've been here quite a few times since it is very convenient for me. Out of all the times I have been here I have not had any issues with the staff except for this past time. When I first got to the window, the staff started telling me my box was taped incorrectly at the bottom. I understand that there are best practices to tape a box and she could have just said it in a nice way but I felt like I was being berated. I politely said I will tape it correctly next time. She scanned my QR code and then started reprimanding me "this label is not correct. the weight says 3oz and the package is over". I told her ebay would charge me the difference as I have previously mailed using prepaid labels from ebay and the weight was incorrect but ebay just charged me later for the weight change". She was NOT having it. She told me I was cheating the post office and that she was not even supposed to scan the label and that next time I should go weigh my item at the machine and that I would not be helped. I wasn't understanding since I know ebay will just charge me the difference in weight so i don't understand why she was getting so angry and saying I was cheating the USPS???? like really???? I feel like there could have been a better way to rectify than her getting angry. I arrived 20 minutes early for my 12:15 p.m. appointment to submit a new passport application. Upon checking in at the front desk, I was unexpectedly met with a dismissive attitude. When I calmly explained the reason for my visit, the staff member told me to "calm down," despite me already being composed. After confirming I was on the appointment list, she asked me to take a seat. At 12:10 p.m., just before my scheduled time, the staff announced they were going on a break. Twenty minutes later, they returned only to say they were running behind schedule. I wasn't called until 1:50 p.m. -- a significant delay. It's unclear why appointments are scheduled during staff lunch breaks, or why a nearly two-hour wait is acceptable for a confirmed time slot. read more

DO NOT come here to get your passport!!! From the moment I walked into the room I was met with an attitude by multiple workers. I said I had an appointment for 1:45 and the lady behind the desk says "I can not do this I need to go home. Have a seat." Not sure how that is professional whatsoever. (she ended up announcing out loud she was done for the day and left shortly after) I arrived at 1:15 (early) and waited to finally get called AT 3:40!!!! No point in making an appointment when they aren't even accurate with timing. The other worker named MS.COHEN dismissed herself while the room was FILLED with about 10 people including myself. We were left clueless as to why we're all just waiting in this room with nobody in the office helping us. She comes back an hour later with a drink in her hand and starts calling people to the back. With a DISGUSTING attitude shes telling people to reschedule because shes behind. I obviously stayed because at this point I was there for 2 hours. She called my name and gave me the worst attitude for forgetting a document. Shouldn't I be the one upset about forgetting my own document? lol.. (and also, i wasn't even mad i forgot it. i was just accepting of it.) She was just mad about her job clearly. I told her how bad her attitude was and she said "Ok, whatever have a good day." no apology for being 2 HOURS BEHIND or even for taking accountability for the unnecessary attitude. like excuse me? you left a whole room filled with people with appointments without saying anything and told almost everyone to reschedule. This is for the passport section of this post office. (to the left of the windows, in the back) Wow, I had such Good luck with USPS workers this week. Usually they can be horrific. I tried to go to "walk in hours" at another post office to apply for a passport. For some reason, they canceled walk in hours that day and were only taking people with appointments that day. But they set me up for an appointment at this post office for the next day. This post office has many appointments available per day (At least now in the summer). At the other post office, I would have needed to wait at least two weeks for the earliest appointment. I brought in everything needed based on what was listed on the website, and what I was told when I called the US passport agency for info. I brought two personal checks, but I was told on the spot to just write one check and use my credit card for the other charge. The lady who helped me was very nice, kind, and friendly. The wait to see a clerk is grossly excessive. It appears the location is understaffed and leads to overworked clerks who may be less than helpful due to the stress they are placed under. The automated postal machines are often broken and/or grossly limited in tasks they are capable of performing which results in needing to get in line to see a clerk. USPS supplies are generally available. Often, the most commonly used supplies (eg 2 day envelopes) are not in stock. That said, there is a much broader range of supplies available at this location given the increased floor space this location has to spread out the supplies. read more

Passport appointments were taking 30 minutes plus per person and the post office was booking them 10 minutes or closer together. No place to sit and everyone sitting on the floor. Had to come in from Brooklyn as no local appointments available. Seriously?!? Ended up waiting TWO HOURS to get seen for 5:15 pm appointment. Waited through the dinner hour and the entire family. In addition, they were going in exact order of paper appointment book so got bumped for a person with the same appointment time even though we were there 20 minutes longer. How does it take so long??? SUPER backed up. Then the ladies started giving attitude when raised the issue of time and were super rude, threatened to cancel my appointment. They expect people to be chipper regardless. Yelled at me for waiting in front of the window when it was my turn. Can the post office please, please, please, be reformed? I mean what can you say about a building this beautiful? This is the main Post Office that once was a train station and now it's turned back into the main hub for Amtrak and LIRR. The train station itself is beneath the Post Office, so when you come up the staircases on either side of the building you'll be in the main Post Office. I'm not too keen on the service that you receive from the people here but they have plenty of self service machines and you're able to get your packages out Pretty much anytime of the day. Despite being beautiful it is a full service Post Office you can get your passport here or any othere are any other services that they offer.. As an eBay seller I need to go to the post office every day. I print my postage out at home, and scan in the postal machines. Occasionally, I have a fragile or foreign shipping item that the machines won't take and reject with a "please see agent" notice. Today was my first day at the Farley Post Office (BIG MISTAKE!) and I had both a fragile item and an item being shipped to Switzerland. I waited half an hour in line. When I got to the clerk he said, "You need to do this at the machine. I can't take this. If you want to wait on line you have to pay extra." I explained that the machines say "see agent." "I don't care," came the answer. "You wait on line, you pay more." In the interests of younger viewers, I won't give my response. Hint: the second word was "YOU!" So I left the post office and walked to the post office on 10th Ave and 24th St. The clerk there (and at EVERY post office except the 8th Ave Farley) was kind, smiling, checked in the packages and I left with a "have a nice day." By far some of the nicest/ patient tellers at this NYC location, however If you want to insure your package actually ships out same day, do not go to this location. It doesn't matter if you paid to expedite your package nor if you take it to the window and get shipping confirmation, there is still a high chance that it will not ship until next business day. I recommend going to 38th street (8th & 7th Ave) location. You can even walk your package into the loading dock area Up until 6pm and it will ship that day. Jame a Farley has failed me for the last time. Very inconsistent on getting packages out same day. read more

Gone are the days of 24 hour service, which in reality is probably appropriate. The service is just like any other post office - you can interpret that however you want to. The only reason this is a 2 star review has nothing to do with USPS but more to do with the building which is beautiful. It is truly a cool piece of architecture which will not be a post office for much longer. There are the occasional homeless people hanging out on the steps outside, but then again, this is New York F* City - we have lots of homeless people everywhere! Would I actually wait in line here to deal with a postal worker that has no desire to help me? Probably not. The automated machines are much friendlier and more efficient. Unfortunately the automated machines cannot give you a change of address form and if you decide to do change your address online, the USPS has decided to charge you for it. After leaving less than glowing reviews about other USPS locations, I'm happy to say this one is bomb! I primarily come here to drop off packages from my e sales and I always have a smooth transaction. However. They lost a very expensive return that I made, since apparently it wasn't suppose to go to them. I'm almost positive that my package was stolen through out moving from this location but I'm fair and won't take that out on this location. Though I will say, NOT COOL on USPS's behalf in general. I still have yet to get a refund even w/ going through all the necessary protocols and channels. I'm extremely disappointed in how they have handled my situation and it's been a year now. Anyways, long story short, this is a very good location to drop packages off at primarily. They have bins! So you definitely don't have to wait on a long line just to drop your packages off if you don't want to. Terrible service. I waited 15 mins to get to the window. The woman who worked on window 8 on Dec. 2nd refused to scan my six prepaid packages. The reason she provided is "The label shows shipped date is 12/4/2023. I can't ship before this date." This is the biggest joke ever. The I had to use the self-scanning machine outside to get the receipts and put my packages in the mailboxes. I have never experienced this issue in any other post office. If you want me to use self checkout machine outside you can just told me, instead of giving me the stupidest reason. And if it were me, I would just scan packages for the customers, it will only take 2 mins instead of let them struggle with the broken scanning machine for half an hour.
