Huge post office conveniently located on Lexington Ave, steps away from Grand Central. I've passed this spot several times on my way to and from the office, however I try to avoid going to the post office as much as possible so I have rarely been inside. Nevertheless, there are times where I need to visit one, and in those cases this is super convenient. For me, the biggest plus this post office has going for it is their operating hours. They're open from 7:30am to 7pm Monday to Saturday which is way longer than a typical branch. This makes it easy if you need to visit before or after work. This is also a huge location - tons of PO boxes and multiple self-serve kiosk stands in case you don't need to wait on the line for your service. Speaking of the line, it's there - as per usual. Despite having multiple tellers and a long queue area, I've only seen two to three people working them - even at peak times. As such, there's always a line - so just be prepared. Overall, this US Post Office is fine. I will use the self-serve kiosks as much as possible, and their expanded operating hours will make me a repeat patron. read more

Came by to drop off some Christmas cards and buy some stamps, have to say I was impressed by the size and facilities they have at this location. A lot of the smaller locations only have a few customer service windows and limited self-service. Here there are over two dozen windows (though not all of them are staffed). As with many post offices the lines could prob move faster but overall it felt reasonable (a dozen odd people in line) on a Friday evening around 5pm. The overall space appeared to be generally clean and decently maintained. Nice touch to add some sculptures and artwork since mailboxes aren't very intriguing to look at. I think sometimes it's easy to judge post office clerks by their covers, they have to deal with such a wide variety of people so they've seen it all. No use being impatient as there's unfortunately not much motivation to speed things up (so many things are broken systematically in the USPS as an organization ...but that's another discussion) and it'll probably just rub on nerves for all parties. In the meantime better to just plan ahead and account for some extra time when getting in line at the post office. One of the nice things about this location is it's open late weekdays until 7pm, convenient when you don't have time before work or during the day to stop by a post office. read more

Friday afternoon, few windows are opened but line moves very quickly. M-F open till 9pm.... It's right next to Grand Central Station. E 44th st by Lex across from bath & body work. It might hard to find it since there're under the construction and no flag sings out...... The entrance door is pretty heavy. Solid - no lines at 8:30a in the morning, up the stairs into the floor, they have a large area for writing on a solid stone (marble?) elevated table, lots of package supplies sitting out for you to grab, automated stations, and staffed stations. Service was quick, they had the stamps in stock that I wanted, and the package arrived on time as predicted! Nice and simple. Many times I come to this post office and it closed before it's time. I travel on the bus to get there for my gopost. It states 1:00 pm closed 12:15 doors are locked. Some people pay for their P.O. Box and get to it so how you think they feel. I met a few out front. Open and close on time that's all the people asking. read more

They are open 6days a week, there is alot of open space. You will not feel crowded upon entering. The lines where not long when I visited. I can see why this place has low ratings. I went on a Monday around my lunch time as I had to mail out a package. The post office wasn't too bad, but there was still a long line. I did use the self-service check out by the line. When people saw me use it, they were like I didn't know there was a self-service line for people to use. Maybe there should be workers directing them to go there instead of the long line. The long line wasn't managed well since only one window was servicing them. I would probably go back since this is the closest to where I work. read more

Not to be confused with the US Boast Office, which is where they'll tell you America is the most free country in the world and by far the best. Oh wait that's the whole damn country, never mind then. In terms of service and wait time, this can be a somewhat typical post office, sometimes a little bit better than others and sometimes not as good. just on a much bigger scale. But in terms of uniqueness, this is one of the most beautiful post offices in the whole world. It feels like you're entering a spectacular museum, and it is certainly a tourist landmark for the whole city and indeed for the whole world. I'm very surprised that anyone would not give it five stars when taking into account how spectacular it is, and it always feels like totally my pleasure to be entering such a structure when I just really want to mail some letters. read more

I hadn't visited this post office in many years, and it appears unchanged. The location is convenient. My purpose for coming was to submit a passport application. Upon arrival, staff member was not there but a sign did mention in an interview. The process was quick once they were available to assist us. I did appreciate her level of patiences as the whole form needed to be written again due to one section being crossed out. I'd like to point out that there is currently no seating available, and it would be beneficial to have that implemented for the convenience of customers. Norma is notoriously, horrendously rude and when I reported it the station manager told me to please file an online report. Please someone should do something. I know it's a government job but she shouldn't have a license to abuse people on a regular basis. I work in this building and I can't tell you how many times I've come by to drop off mail and someone said oh no you have Norma, she's so mean. Not a fan. I've been here twice as it's the closest post office to me and the people are always rude. I don't understand it. The ones I've dealt with are not helpful and have zero customer service. As in, you ask them questions and they don't respond or barely respond, as if it's a chore to help you. I'm sure it's a difficult job with a lot of nasty people, but I see no reason to be rude to nice, polite customers just trying to get their errands done. I'm an anxious mailer, even with digital returns, QR codes, etc, so this makes the experience less pleasant than usual. I have hit or miss experiences at this location. It's the closest one to my work so I'm often running errands here on my lunch. The lines can be pretty long, although there are a few lines depending on what you need to do. If you have a preprinted label that just needs scanning, you can go to the kiosk right before the line and they'll scan it and even give you a receipt, then you can drop it in the bin behind the self service area. The main line is for your general postal needs. They have another line that I think is for money orders but I could be wrong, and also another line for passport services. The general line can be long a lot of the times. Depending on the day, the amount of postal workers at the registers seems to vary. One saving grace is this location is open late! I had no idea. I assumed it closed at 5 and that was that, but no, they are open until 9pm! Of course the after 5pm drop offs aren't sent out until the next day but at least you have the option to drop it off in the evening. This is pretty rare in my experience with most post offices. Since lunch time is a busy time for the post office, I may move to evening drop offs from now on. It seems like it's a lot less stressful. read more

Why I love this post office: - It's huge - Long hours - They have someone walking around when the line gets long to help direct traffic - As someone who prints their postage on PayPal (discounted commercial rate), I only come here to drop off packages. Sometimes someone walks with a scanner or directs me to a window. I am in and out within minutes. Despite the holiday rush. FYI, my favorite is First Class Mail (PayPal prints up to 16 oz) and using the Priority Mail padded flat rate envelopes (they don't always have them in the post office, I order in bulk) And really, if you ever had to deal with the old E 14th St post office, you should be grateful that this one is so competent. read more

As a long time avid Philatelic, I always yearn to see what is in the market for postal stamps either to utilize or to collect. With this prominent location adjacent to Grand Central Terminal it resonate an extremely busy atmosphere for long haul bread lines at window services. Postal machines are cranking busy as well. Postal clerks at the window service are callous and robotic to dispel a rude scowl attitude as I inquired what stock is available for postal stamps. "Go to that glass encasement to see what we have!!" Why should I study a glass encasement which stock levels always fluctuate for product and merchandise?? Five years working in retail which merchandise inventory always deplete like water gone within minutes. Apparently these postal clerks do not know their inventory at all as I selected the Lunar New Year which was sold out. It's a post office, so unless you've been living under a rock, you won't be surprised that exceptional, efficient customer service isn't the norm. However, it's not awful. I've purchased stamps from machines here and they are efficient. I went to renew my passport and after waiting for a half hour, the one passport person (there were five people in line) explained what we needed to do and I did that and was on my way in five minutes. I just wish the one postal employee who was standing there doing nothing other than telling people what line to get into could have explained the same information and saved me a half hour of needless waiting. I had to send some stuff express mail and the clerk who helped me was actually charming, helpful, professional and overall a real delight to interact with. This Post office setup confuses me sometimes, b/c right when you walk in, there is a line for passports that you can mistake for the main line. Awful. I went to submit my passport application there on 12/17/2014. Got cursed by the clerk serving me at window 1 when I politely asked her to double-check the spelling of my name after I saw she had made a mistake in the form. Seems like profanities is her preferred form of communication as I heard a trail of accusations in my address. The saddest part was, the supervisor didn't mind it at all. The clerk did not have her name tag on, so when she refused to tell me what her name was, I went to the supervisor and requested that he looked into the matter, made her apologize for the poor service she provided, including all the curses and profanities, and processed my application. NOTHING was done. He actually refused to tell me her name. After I told him I would file a complaint against him as well and penciled down his name, he got extremely defensive. I ended up calling the police as the "madam incognito" tried to tear my certificate of naturalization out of my hands when she saw I took pictures of her to include in the complaint I filed - by the way, the photos are enclosed for your pleasurable review (the clerk's facial expression speaks for itself - anger and violence galore, professionalism in question). Needless to say, neither the "madam incognito" nor the supervisor processed my passport application, and I had to go to another post office on the Upper West to get it done (refreshingly nice people there). I filed an official complaint with USPS - no follow ups. One of their representatives called me the following day to personally apologize for the obnoxious treatment I received, but the Grand Central Station management have not at any point apologized. Shame on the clerk, shame on the supervisor, and shame on the people who hired them and let them keep the jobs they don't deserve -- unless they are being paid for abusing customers. There are several complaints about her service here on Yelp and seems like nothing is being done to put her in her place. SHAME! P.S. Need to renew passport for my child. Was exited to learn what post office open late on Wednesday. It's not easy to coordinate with my son's school and my husband work. We are got to the post office around 7.00 pm with 2 people in front, in the line. Lady ( picture included) was really not in the rush to help people in line. There will always be a line no matter what time of day you show up, so come prepared (especially if you visit during your lunch break). The best way to mail a package is to have pre-paid boxes because you can drop them or walk away. There are tons of kiosks to help you get labels, stamps, etc., so make sure you don't have to be in the dreaded line if you don't have to be. WoW, this is why the post office is going bankrupt. I just had the worst service with the laziest clerk ever. She did NOT want to help me. I had two packages: a box and an envelope. I had a label for the box and she wouldn't accept it and was complaining about the use of scotch tape. 30+ years of using the post and I've NEVER had an issue with scotch tape.
