To be honest, I didn't think this location is that bad. I went in at around 4pm and there was hardly a line. Also, they don't really have a separate line for picking up packages - but there is a worker always on the lookout... Asking people in line if they are paying by card so they can pay at the quick service counter. Such a time saver. I use the self service kiosk to mail packages and I'm in and out with no hassle. And the AC is blasting! Thank the summertime gawds! read more

I came in here to delivery my wedding invitations and wanted to hand them to the postal worker instead of dumping them into a box. When I got to the window I told her that these were wedding invitations. She said, "Why didn't you drop them in the dropbox? There's a guy outside with a mail truck, why didn't you just give these to him?" I was dumbfounded by how rude and condescending she was. Absolutely terrible. People are forced to wait in long lines while the staff moves at a sloth like pace and chats amongst themselves. Customers are regularly abused and barked at like dogs. The rudest people ever - zero customer service - its almost as if the people who work here enjoy making a visit to the post office a misery.

TERRIBLE SERVICE. Outrageously horrific customer service. "Steve" was out of control rude and walked away from the desk after melting in a temper tantrum. He needs to be fired ASAP. **UPDATE** the employee in question (calls himself Steven S. on Yelp) has since found this Yelp review (mind you, he actually told me to leave a bad Yelp review if i was unhappy with his service and I complied) and sent me a harassing message on here today. I would give minus starts if I could. Why is the service and attitudes allowed at the post offices. There is a major problem with the moral and customer service. Every time or 90% of the time the people are so rude that work here and condescending. One worker on her phone walking around ignoring people. Ask for a pen and a rude response of " you should have brought your own". Even though it has pen locations they are all broke and let me tell you something as a taxpayer .... a pen would be the logical first step of service at a place where you ha e to fill out addresses. This is exactly why some people say private service should run govt.. not that I agree totally but when the dmv/ post office treats you like unimportant things it is super frustrating. Thank god for fed ex and people who disrupt old industries due to lack of service. Last week I witness a poor elderly women get verbally abused and yelled at by a teller named "brian" and was told her problem wasn't with her ears but her brain! Then refused to help her after that and decided to shoot the shit with the monster selling stamps in the back while the rest of us on line looked in absolute horror We all agreed to call and file a complaint but can't seem to find info anywhere! There are few words which can accurately capture the horror of this establishment; I will offer one specific interaction as a guide for the past, present and future. The irony that this location is named the Planetarium shows that perhaps we may actually be looking at a "window to another world." I arrived at the Planetarium and selected a priority flat-rate envelope. I had already printed my postage through ebay, avoiding what I thought would be the difficult portion of the trip. I then noticed that the adhesive on the envelope was not functioning, so I applied some priority (read: Priority Tape on a Priority Envelope) tape to the back of the envelope. When I arrived at the counter, barely a second had passed before I heard the words: "Get that tape off" "I'm sorry?" "You can't have tape on that envelope" Despite my best efforts to explain that I would literally be mailing an open envelope if I removed the tape, the Planetarium employee was not having any of it. "Can I have another envelope?" "No." Finally: "Alright, so where does this leave us? How do I mail this without securing the envelope?" "Take that tape off" I walked away from the counter, towards the self-drop bin, and deposited the package, tape and all, into the receptacle. I checked online 3 days later. This postal location is some sort of Sartrean hell. At all times of day there is a line at least 15 people deep, my back of the napkin calculation tells me this will be at least a 45 minute wait. Usually one or two "employees" wandering around doing something that doesn't appear to be altogether useful. Normally they inform you that you don't in fact have to wait in line for what you are trying to do. Oftentimes this is a lie. You do have to wait in the line, because there is no escape from this line. It's a ruse to get you out of the line, so that you will eventually wind up at the back of the line again. The line. Always the line. You will be lucky if there is one employee working. Sometimes a second or third window is open, but the older lady with glasses who appears to be the manager is the only one who ever actually does anything. The rest of the people at the counters are just there to find something you did slightly wrong so they can send you to the back of the line again. I've had workers yell at me before I even opened my mouth. They saw my parcel and knew there was a problem. "Fill out the Form Z, get in the back of the line". "Your customs declaration form isn't signed, back of the line", "It's my break now, back of the line". "We aren't accepting packages today, back of the line". The line itself is filled with dead eyes. Dead eyes that have long given up on actually mailing a package. You shuffle your feet forward knowing that the boulder will just roll back down the hill again. There is no progress in the line. There is no escape from the line. This post office does not serve the core function of helping you deliver or receive parcels. This post office is designed to slowly crush your spirit until you leave and throw yourself in front of one of the postal trucks parked out front. This post office is some sort of controlled experiment of the madman Fiorello H. La Guardia sometime in the 1930's. The paperwork for the experiment was lost in some great calamity and no one ever knew to shut it down. Now it will continue in perpetuity ensuring the population in the mid-80s of the UWS never gets too high. If you get the manager (I assume she is the manager) she will still yell at you, but she normally doesn't make you go to the back of the line. I assume this is to keep us coming back. Like Pavlov's dogs, we grow to be conditioned to the idea that one day we may actually retrieve our packages, or that our loved ones will actually receive the gift we want so badly to send them. This is a lie designed to get you to come back. Back to the line. I now open my mailbox with trepidation when I come home. Trepidation that the pink "failed delivery" note of doom will await me, and that this will be my final march into the maw that is the Planetarium Post office. The trip that finally sends me to my end. read more

I'm not sure I've ever seen anything reviewed so poorly on Yelp. And after spending 30 minutes in here, I can see why. This place was like a post office in a fourth world country. The Fourth World refers to: 1. sub-populations socially excluded from global society; 2. hunter-gatherer, nomadic, pastoral and some subsistence farming peoples living beyond the modern industrial norm; and 3. fourth world can also refer to sub populations, existing in a first world country, with the living standards of those of the third world, or developing countries. Having lived in many different cities and a number of neighborhoods within NYC, I can safely say this is the worst post office I have ever had to experience. The following is just one example (from today) of why this place is particularly awful. Earlier this afternoon, I went to the post office to pick up a package (see #1 below as to why I had to pick up the package in first place). I waited in line for 10-15 minutes before realizing that no one was working at the retail windows. I counted 4+ post office employees pacing back and forth beyond the retail windows, but all of the retail windows were closed! With 25+ customers in line, it wasn't until people got angry did did the employees (begrudgingly) come up to the window to take a customer. Ridiculous. After waiting in line for what seemed like eternity, I finally picked up my package and went home. This location is poorly managed. Other problems I have encountered in the last 2.5 years are as follows: 1. I have had a number of packages which were never delivered to my apartment. The delivery man changes the tracking status to "delivered" and then stows the package away at this post office location unbeknownst to me. Since he doesn't leave a notice outside my apartment building, it is up to me to figure out that my package is missing and go pick it up. This has happened at least five or six times and they have never been able to tell me why. 2. I have seen a number of arguments/fights at this location. I've seen several verbal yelling matches inside, and one physical altercation just outside on the sidewalk (not sure what instigated it). This is not the norm for this neighborhood. This location is poorly managed, and I guess there is a lot of frustration among customers who frequent here. 3. A post office worker (who I believe was the manager) yelled at me for taking a few moments to read a sign before dropping my package in the mail bin. I was minding my own business. Very bizarre. 4. There were 2 instances where the automated postal machines took my payment and then failed to dispense postage. The manager (same person that is mentioned in #3) told me that this happens sometimes, and they "fix" it by pounding on it for several minutes until the postage pops out. And the list goes on. I now make it a point to get all my packages delivered via UPS when I can. When I need to send something, I either use the location at Columbus & 95th, or the one on Columbus & 68th St.. Those locations are *much* better and the employees are much more considerate. read more

Here is what happened to me in this branch today: 1. After carrying a 30 pound box 8 blocks to the station and paying over $100 to mail it priority to Sweden, the box was delivered back to me at the return address. I had to walk the box back to the Planetarium Station to start the process over again. 2. The woman who is endlessly walking around the branch being of no use to anyone essentially told me the mistake was my fault. Interesting, since it was her clerk who filled out all the paperwork and entered it into their own computer. 3. When I finally got to a window (20 minute wait?) the clerk asked me if I wanted to insure the package. I pointed out I had already paid for all of this and just needed it re-shipped. She started to argue with me and then shut her window and said she was going to lunch and I could find someone else to deal with. Back to the line. 4. I got everything squared away with a woman who constantly spoke to a clerk at the next window, but when she would address me she would not change the volume or tone of her voice, so since I really couldn't hear her behind the bullet proof glass (which was wisely installed given the way they make their customers feel), I had no idea when she was asking me a question or simply continuing to prattle on about nonsense to her co-worker. That got me yelled at again. 5. I left and then realized 30 seconds later I had forgotten to pick up something at the window. As I walked back to the window I had just left, there is the loud floor walker woman standing in front of the glass, loudly making fun of me. I waited until she realized the clerk had a look of horror on her face because I was standing right behind the loud one, and when she turned around to see me standing there, I told her I didn't want to interrupt, that it sounded like a fascinating story and please do continue. She walked away muttering. Does any of this sound like an acceptable experience to ANYONE? I will never go back to this branch. read more

If you are on here looking for a post office recommendation, this is the last place you want to go. They're understaffed, and the staff that is there is slow and lackadaisical. It's usually dirty and full of tense, angry people too. You really are better off going elsewhere or doing as much as you can on your own- the help you'd get here is far from actual help. This is the inner circle of hell. I am stuck going to this USPS if I have to return an item from USPS. Here are the following horrible experiences: 1) Wait for an hour to drop off a box that is pre-packaged, pre-paid and pre-labelled. All i needed to do was leave it behind the counter, but they made me wait for an hour. 2) Nasty and rude employees. Isn't this a recession? They bark at you before you have a chance to even speak. 3) No assistance, no help, no pens to fill out forms. GO anywhere else if you can. This am I'm there at 7:35 am - theres a line already and two people working. Fine. Typical post office. Mean while others are just hanging around dong nothing. Wearing headphones. The African American Short haired woman there actually had her breakfast delivered to her at the window while everyone was waiting and she was just sitting there not doing nothing. Felt so bad for another girl there - she was trying to pick up a package and had the receipt. She came yesterday and was told they didn't have it. They then left another pick up receipt in her mailbox so she came back again and this time they can't find it. She got the typical "Ill have to let my supervisor ( who's not there) know and we'l contact you. if the US Govt wants to know why USPS seems to be losing money -- come here. The laziness you will witness will make you understand why its easier to go to Fed Ex or UPS and pay more then deal with this. read more

HORIBLE SERVICE!!! Everytime I try to get something done at this branch there's always an issue. You name it and it's happened....either they cannot find my package, my scheduled redeliveries never come when they are suppose to. My favorite is when I wait in a line for 45 minutes and then they tell me I did something wrong and need to fix it and get back in line. Or better yet when I get in line and wait forever only to find out there was a separate line I was suppose to be waiting in. They are incredibly rude, this last visit they wouldn't give me my package because I my dog with me. They wouldn't make an exception as I wasn't aware of this rule. In NYC it is my understanding dogs are allowed anywhere they do not serve or sell food so this was news to me. Avoid this place at all costs, on top of all the issues the employees are flat out rude. It kills me that a single cent of my tax dollars go to fund this joke of an establishment. I've written this place off and will never step foot in there again. I have to find a way to ensure that packages are shipped via ups instead of usps. read more

I live in Cali. So it's odd that I would even have an opinion about this post office in NY. But I do. I have a friend that lives on the UWS. She is in the middle of chemo therapy treatments. I wanted to send her a little gift. A candle from my favorite candle company, to be exact. The candle company is also located here in Cali. So I gave the candle woman my order and my friend's NY address. HOWEVER, I forgot to give her my friend's name. So the candle woman sent the candle to my friend with the correct address...all the way to the exact apt. number and zip...however, she put MY name on the package. So the package gets ALL THE WAY into my friend's HANDS in NY at her apt. door...the delivery woman put the package in her hands and began to walk away. Then she swings back around and asks my friend, "What is your name?" When my friend gave her a name other than the name on the package, the delivery woman snatched the package back out of my friend's hands and told her she couldn't have it because she wasn't me. OK, let me just say, this is utter bullshit. I called the main USPS number and the two people I spoke with there told me there is no hard and fast rule about this. It's kind of left to the delivery person to make the judgement call on whether it's OK or right to go ahead and leave packages with people who aren't named on the package. I live in an apt. and often have my packages delivered to my parent's house. The delivery person has NEVER had a problem with giving them something that has my name on it, even though I don't live there. In fact, they often just leave it on their porch. Anyway, my friend explained to her that I had told her the package was coming and it was just a mistake that my name was on it instead of hers. She also told her she's sick and I was sending it as a get well gesture. She says the deliver woman said, "Oh well! Not my problem! NEXT!" WTF? What kind of ghetto shit is that???? So then I called directly to the location and I spoke with Supervisor Coles. He was very nice. He also said that he wasn't sure why she didn't let my friend have it as there is no rule about the names on the package and all of that crap. I gave him the tracking # and he promised me the package would be delivered no later than the next day. Well, 3 weeks later and she still hasn't received it! I was trying to be patient before I called back. I just called back and now he tells me they sent it BACK to the candle woman on Friday. FABULOUS! Why the hell would it be so hard to get one small ass package with a freaking candle in it delivered???? Unbelievable. I told him that they don't do this bullshit in Cali. He just said something like, "Well it's up to the delivery person". They need to train these mofos better. And the delivery person's ghetto ass attitude is beyond comprehension. Who wants to be bothered with that bullshit?! For this reason I give them a damn 1 star. Totally worthless. read more

First, it's Planetarium Station, not "staion" folks. Honestly, is there anything worse than when a "First to Review" person misspells the businesses name? *sighs in an anal fashion* Anyway, this is the local post office, and it's named for the nearby Hayden Planetarium at The Museum of Natural History. I guess that goes to show that back in the day, Planetariums were kindof a big deal. Not so much these days. I find this post office somewhat hit or miss. The employees are either the nicest, most helpful and thoughtful people you'd ever hope to encounter, or they're dreadful uber-bitches on a mission to inflict nastiness. There really doesnt seem to be any middle ground. The lines tend to be a bit long too, which has caused me to become something of the "Master of the APC" so to speak. HOLY CRAP, BATMAN!! Someone at the post office was just super friendly!! At the post office near my house, the a-hole who usually "helps" me rolls his eyes when he sees me coming, shakes his head "no" and says, "Ugh, it's always something..." Quite frankly, that something is called mailing an envelope and I believe it falls under his job description. It is part of my life/job/routine that I need to mail several large envelopes fairly often that require stamps and SASE for return; quite a bit of stamp application required but no blood-shed needed. I brought my mailing to this post office near work today to try it out because the guy near my apartment is so mean and scary I couldn't face him today. Alas, a miracle happened just now: After I paid for my postage on the envelopes and said my thanks, my postal worker said, "My pleasure, anytime. Take care of yourself. Good luck with your endeavors!" I think I might love him. They also have an automated postage machine which seems handy; but then I would've missed out on my beautiful bonding moment! (ps: I did have to wait a super long time in line and was sweating from the sauna-like heat. Perhaps the crowds flock there beacuse it is the only station where you don't want to cry or kick ass after you send your package) read more

I have been to this post office multiple times and at many times during the day (and not on a lunch break) and it has always been a disaster. If you package ended up here, be prepared for the worst: (1) long lines and only one window open (and it is likely the person at that window is taking their sweet time having a conversation with someone) (2) lost packages [that aren't really lost] - I came to this post office to look for a package that was returned here. I came on 3 different occasions and stayed for over an hour each time. I left notes with the manager and no one got back to me. Luckily - on trip #3 after another hour of waiting- by some grace of gd, a higher-up came down and called the driver who had delivered the package and located it immediately. It helped that I had remembered the names of the people who had helped me the days before and had written down their information. If you try to call instead of going in, be prepared: You will be put on hold for 30+ minutes and no one is coming back to talk to you. You can leave a message with the manager but no one will call you back. One time I went in and it was only a 20 minute line and they found my package immediately - but that was the rare exception. Also - even though this place is hellish, it doesn't hurt to be extra nice to the employees. They know that everyone hates this post office and is really frustrated. The more you invest in them, probably the better your service will be. There are some gems who work her - you just need to find them :) read more

No access for wheel chair other than going through the dangerous garage, access front doors never work, supplies for mailing never available, filthy dirty facility. I honestly haven't been here in a while because it is a place I avoid at all costs, even though I live a few blocks away. The physical plant is depressing enough, but it's the attitude of the postal workers that sends me into real despair. Waiting on line, I feel the way I did when I was a young girl waiting to "confess" to the priest on Saturday mornings -- scared about some fault I didn't even commit. I apologize to any worker here who is kind and polite, and I am sure there are some, but the ones I have encountered are so brusque and unhelpful that I'd rather walk many blocks to friendlier outposts. read more

And yeah, I was standing in line for over an hour but if standing in line is the worst thing that happens to you that day you should consider yourself lucky. Food for thought: don't you think it's natural that if you take your frustration from the week out on them they're gonna crap at you? It's their (Friday) afternoon too!! I have lived on the Upper West Side for many years and utilized the services at this post office. I must say, the people at this post office are super courteous and helpful. There were times, that my mail had not forwarded and I needed immediate help--they were there. The staff actually pick-up the phone and provide personal service. In a world of automation--which is efficient and great--one still needs human interaction to resolve important issues. Here is what I typed on the USPS 'postal experience' web site, which as we all know no one reads except for comic relief. This 'experience' took place c. 10:15 - 11:00 a.m. on Monday 9th September 2019. The workers behind the bars at each station are hostile, rude, and ignorant. This has been my experience there for the past 12 years, and if you go to the YELP pages on this post office, you will see my response confirmed by many, many other customers, who write looooong accounts of their experiences. The woman who 'helped' me today 1) did not have a name badge, 2) was rude, 3) had pink finger-nails 2 inches long (one finger nail on each hand was silver), so she could not type in the Irish addresses on my packages. She typed each letter separately by hitting it with a pencil. It took FORTY-FIVE MINUTES to mail 3 books to Ireland, and that is just the time once I was served; it doesn't count the standing in line. She was Clerk number 14. Moreover, this woman was so ignorant that she spelled the names in the addresses wrong, even though I had them typed clearly, in large black letters, on the three envelopes. She told me the system would not take one of the addresses because "there was no address," but I did have the name of the business, the town, the county, and the country. I explained to her that it was a small town and no one had an address. She refused to do anymore, rudely, so I invented an address: I said, "Call it Main Road." -- So she typed "Mainn Road." -- You have employees so ignorant they can't spell the word "Main.' -- I have no faith in the USPS; you are probably laughing at this message, if indeed anyone is reading it. At this PO, rude, ignorant people hire more rude, ignorant people. My husband knows the night manager there, and the night manager just laughs at how dumb and hopeless the day people are. -- It's FedEx for me from now on.
