I came to this post office as a last resort to get my passport. I had gone to another post office and didn't know passport hours ended early. Here you can apply for your passport as long as you are in line by 6pm. It was very unorganized as I was told I would need a number but unclear how to get said number. Upon asking there was much confusion and attitude from the staff. Eventually a worker came out and gave people numbers. I had to wait about an hour with 4 people in front of me which wasn't bad because they have seating. This is what made the numbers process confusing because the seating does not have an ordered set up to know who was there first. This post office was convenient and I'd go back if necessary. I've learned that almost all NYC post offices SUCK. read more

There's a post office open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in NYC. This is it. I went there last Sunday to drop off a Netflix dvd, just for the novelty of sending mail on a Sunday. It doesn't get to the Netflix shipping center any faster than anything I ship out of Brooklyn on a Monday morning. In fact, sometimes my Monday morning shipments get there faster, so no five star review. But it's convenient if you're in midtown. It's VERY convenient if you're about to leave from Penn Station and realize you have a bill to mail in your bag. This station is beautiful. So much so that for a while, there was talk of co-opting it to become the new Penn Station, since the current Penn Station is a hot mess of ugly. Bonus points for providing me with safe haven from an aggro crackhead who followed me from 36th St to 31st St. (I like to walk in the mornings, which unfortunately is when derelicts' drugs have worn off, but before their dealers wake. Its no secret that I LOVE post offices. Some of my earlier memories are going to the post office in Amsterdam or Paris and getting stamps with my grandmother, an avid collector. Back then there were a lot of collectors and the European Post Offices were part of the process. She would get mail from friends all over, back in those days people still sent snail mail, and we would carefully remove stamps so as not to ruin return address etc. Then each stamp carefully put into the correct book or envelope. I inherited that collection, as well as the love of stamps and as a result visit post offices wherever I am. It is with great sadness I see them closing all over, not just in the US, but worldwide. This is one of my favorites. I used to come here at 2 am just because I could. It was open 24 hours a day until very recently. They also had a philatelic window that was staffed and fully supplied I found. That window was only open during business hours though. Now this location is still the main location in NYC and still open more than any other, but no longer 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. But that's ok. Its still open late and early. The building is fantastic. The lines can get long, but it wont matter because the building has so much to look at. read more

Finally made it in after schlepping my luggage up the stairs in front Asked where to drop my packages and the staff was pretty rude in telling me where to go. Hey. I'm to the post office. What else is there? They mail things and sell stamps. Lately they've slowed down.

Even though it's no longer open 24 hours a day, the James Farley office is (especially compared to its punier sister offices) is nothing short of epic. It's sheer size, the giant pillars, and hilly steps make for the perfect court house, let alone a post office. It's so nice that I sometimes feel underdressed but I'm just here to send a letter / package. The lines aren't so bad (except during holidays) and the window attendants are efficient and quick. If I don't feel like human interaction, there are plenty of self service stations as well. Finally with great size, comes great protection. There are always a good dozen plus cops manning the doors, strolling around the steps, probably keeping a keen eye on "packages" that come rolling through the doors. Even when its a skeleton crew of PO attendants, there is plenty of po-po around to keep things safe. The post office now closes at 10pm, which is still later than anywhere else in the city. read more

I'm a little sad. My mom works here (night shift) and Postal Workers are getting laid off little by little due to the advent of the internet. Nobody sends personal letters anymore, except maybe for Christmas/ holidays. I used a machine to send my package off. Efficient, but makes me a little sad at the same time. If there are any post office that stands out in New York, this one is it.Taking up a whole block is this iconic landmark of a post office. While the public side of the building is a tiny portion of it, it's still pretty huge to me. And it's also been a while since I'm been here, so here are some things that stood out. - There are no more stamp dispensing machines, it's been replace by a lot of Automatic Post Teller machines. These machines can weigh your letters and packages and print out stamps. - Those who like pretty stamps can go visit the Postal store on the far right end. Most stamps are "Forever" stamps now. - There is an area where they dump all their tax forms if you need it during tax season. Far right side again. - There's a "museum" in here! Next to the Postal Store on the left side. - Need a Passport? There's a passport office here. Near the middle. read more

USPS workers are the best. They are super helpful and super friendly! That just makes me happy. This USPS was extremely beautiful and really big. I'm used the measly little post offices and the architecture was fascinating here. I really enjoyed being in this post office. They really know how to manage the crowds. It's almost like being at the DMV with the numerous windows and the call numbers lighting up at a vacant window. I was glad I walked 1/2 a mile to get to this post office, it was well worth it. read more

Another rare occasion for me to give a five-star rating to a post office....I hadn't been to this one for many years and I was very glad to return. For one thing, it is *the* most gorgeous post office in NYC. Also, it was nicely decorated for the holiday season. Although there were a lot of people, the line moved at a steady pace and I didn't feel the waiting time was onerous. The clerk at the window I went to was *very* friendly and she had a great sense of humor. The clerk at the adjacent window seemed really friendly, too. Also; a very nice young man (in a red vest for greater visibility) roved around the post office, answering questions and helping people. A manager walked around at various points and he was also friendly & helpful. VERY impressive! (Update on 7/26/15): We went there today because it was the only post office open on Sundays and we were in the neighborhood. The (friendly) guards allowed people to enter the lobby well before the (11:00 a.m. on Sundays) opening time and there were even some benches. It was also a relief to sit in an air-conditioned building instead of standing outside in the already-torrid heat. The clerk at the window I went to was as friendly as when I was there previously. read more

Silly rabbits, NYC is not the only city in the US of A that has a 24-hr post office! (There's in every metropolitan area.) It's just that we are lucky that ours is extreeemmeeely easy to get to. I LOVE THIS POST OFFICE. I live in Brooklyn, and even if I just have a piece of mail to drop off, I'll go take the A/C and drop it off at this post office because I know I can. Ha! The people there are also surprisingly delightful. I went the other night and there was this guy named Anthony who made sure he talked to everyone who was waiting in line for service to make sure that they are not lining up when they don't have to. Anthony: "Ok, who haven't I talked to... you, what do you need?" Person A holding a bunch of manila env: "I need postage on all these and I don't know how much to put on because of the size." Anthony: "Ok, you see down that way, there's a scale on that table and you press a button, first-class, priority etc.., it'll tell you how much postage you need regardless of size." Then he came up to me and ask me. I told him I am also lining up for stamps, to see if they still sold the cloud ones. He laughed and wonders why everyone wants those fancy stamps. It was my turn and I went to the next window. I asked the lady for those cloud stamps. She told me they are gone but gladly went ahead and showed me a bunch of other new fancy sheets I can buy. She was soo pleasant! So remember, the 24-hour post office isn't just for tax slackers, or when you had to postmark your college application at the last minute. This is only one of my favorite post offices because it is open later than pretty much any other one. Also, you can get there and drop off your mail anytime pretty much before 7:15 pm (general area) and it will still carry the post date for that day. THIS IS THE MAIN POST OFFICE for NYC and I guess the most famous. It is huge you can see it at 32nd street from the side I most come from. Yes, there are some really long lines in most cases, but if you really need that money order to go out at 6:15 pm on a saturday night, go here and send it through. -Quick tip In the summertime it is really cool to sit out on the steps of the place and people watch, just enjoy eating lunch or something. It is also open 7 days a week, sunday though the mail does not go out unless express mail or overnight only ( i believe). read more

I came in here on Thursday to mail a greeting card. I knew it would weigh more than the cost of one stamp. This post office used to have machines that took cash. They no longer do. But the machine that takes cards wants you to spend a minimum of $1. I'm like are you kidding me? Why have a machine that takes cards only but wants you to spend a minimum amount of money. SO I went in the line. It took 25 minutes. If there was one line for the whole thing fine. But there were a few lines with a few windows open so why the hell does it take this long? Because people are idiots. You had people who didn't fill out this form or that form when they initially went to a window to mail a package. Of course a form needs to be filled out. But then those same people are asked to just come back to that same cashier, no matter how many people are waiting in a line. I was overcharged by the postal office when I was going to mail a letter by regular mail to Spain. My envelope has only three pages and the postal machine charged me $2.16 Dollars by mistake.These machines are not working properly or they are created to charge people much more money than the normal price.. The correct price is $1.15 Dollars. It's terrible the way that they behave. Don't use those machines. The retail postal store at 380 West 33rd Street around the corner has limited hours and is smaller, but it is here where I was able to attain my highly coveted postal stamps as a avid Philatelic. James A. Farley was the United States Postmaster General who served under President Franklin D. Roosevelt 1933-1940. This James A. Farley postal station is HUGE in commercial retail space of 393,000 square feet occupying one block of physical space and open late hours during the business week. This massive building is impossible to be missed during one's travels. I wish I still have a pen pal or relative who has the time to write letters (paper and envelope). Since childhood I have always been fascinated with postal stations by the interior structure, the age, postal stamps, mail volume handled daily, sending parcels, the history and its establishment in 1775 by the Second Continental Congress with Benjamin Franklin as its first postmaster general, Owney, the Postal Dog, and the overall excitement of sending/receiving letters. The old days when the U.S. economy was booming successful for this location to open 24/7 are long gone. They do open late until 10 PM Mondays to Fridays unlike smaller locations in the NYC boroughs. OK, I get the need for security since 9/11, but seriously the multiple duplication of documentation for overseas packages leaves LAX security in the shade. However, despite the long queues, and the need to learn how the USPS system operates I found the staff helpful. I also love the scale of this building; it's beautiful. I have mixed feelings about this post office. On the one hand, it is so grand. People go there just to take pictures of the inside. The huge steps in the front are so magical. BUT things are a little more different when you actually need service. Just don't be in a rush when you go in and need to mail something. The line can snake around the dividers into oblivion. And seems like the longer the line, the fewer the workers are on hand. Tons of customers, 2 workers. Nobody in line, 7 windows open. A mess! A post office in the middle of Manhattan.. will it be the most efficient post office that ever lived? Or will it be the more horrendous? Even when I lived in NYC 10+ years ago, this post office was pretty swank. It's a huge building that most wouldn't even think of as a post office, but indeed it is. You'll likely not spend more than 5-10 minutes in there.. depending on what time you go. If you avoid rush times, then I found all employees to be quite helpful and actually quite friendly. Because of the amount of people they have to serve, I figure that efficiency is key and they need a good surplus of employees to get people on the go. read more

Took 30 mins only to hear that the only way to get a letter overnight guaranteed to downtown Brooklyn would be to get out of line, find an Express envelope somewhere (now re-termed Priority Mail Express, as if it weren't confusing enough already), then get back in line. Saved from 1 star only by the excellent pre-line guy who said I could pay for my pre-filled out mailing at the Store desk. Construction until 2018 for the new Moynihan station makes the lobby so dusty that I thought there was a fire with smoke. Turns out, it's just dust from the serious excavation directly underneath the lobby. If you can buy postage elsewhere or usps.com, do it. read more

Went there to apply for four passports on a Sunday, with two kids under 2 (just think about how much fun that was). We got there close to 12, and there was already a decent group of people waiting. Unfortunately (and this is why I remove the 1 star), there were no instructions for us to follow. I had to ask a lady sitting down what exactly I was supposed to do, and she kindly explained that someone would be out to hand tickets in a bit, so I just had to wait. Sure enough, a few minutes later an Asian gentleman (didn't get his name) comes out and tells us to get in line to receive our tickets. He also asks if anyone needs pictures, and asks those who do to wait for him. All four of us needed pictures, and even though my 5-month-old was not cooperating, the gentleman was very friendly and patient. He even told us that based on our number, it would be another hour minimum, so we should go out and get something to eat while we wait. We came back about an hour later and there were still 11 numbers in front of us. Some people left and they opened about 2 more windows, which allowed things to move faster, but it was still about another hour before we were seen. At the window, the same Asian gentleman helped us out. It took about 45 minutes to go through all the paperwork, and remake some copies, all the while he spoke with us about everyday things. We left at 3 when they stop giving out tickets, and they still had a group of people to see. Overall, the workers were great, and I appreciate all the amenities (they take pictures, and make copies for a fee). Things moved pretty slowly (we were there for 3 hours!), but I wasn't expecting anything else. If you're going with kids, there is an open space where most parents let their kids play with cars and other toys, so bring those, snacks, and youtube kids, cus you're gonna need them. Also, there weren't a lot of seats, so be prepared to stand, or sit on the floor. Good thing we don't have to do this for another five years, but I'll definitely be back when the time comes. read more

I've watched 3 people here already ask for supervisors to file complaints in the 10 minutes I've been here. Also none of the services are cheaper than UPS unless you're using media mail. It's beautiful, it's big, there are few employees but they always help as best they can. Just enjoy the grandeur of an atypical post office experience and get over your stamp / extra 15 min hold up. It's a privilege to have this open as many hours and days as it as, and a privilege to call such a luxurious building my "usps post office." Wow, I called this post office because I had not received a package and the tracking number said it was delivered. The lady over the phone was super rude and out of line and sounded just plain miserable. You would think she was working at some slaughter house! She started off saying that she didn't know why so many people had called that location today. Umm, I was told by a different post office. Then she got upset because I asked her for the phone number of the post office that I should be calling and her response was "10016"? I asked her to clarify and she said that everyone should know where their mail was coming from and sounded very bitter. Horrible. Bad attitudes, terrible service, no one answers the phone. They consistently misdeliver or lose packages. Useless & incompetent. Can't we figure out how to get a friggin' post office up to speed? Not to mention, it's NYC - we don't move at the speed of dead, here. I've been ringing their phone for the last TWO HOURS - no one picks up. (Oh, and their hours are so convenient: 8a-4p... so anyone who's employed out of the home, can't go. Great!) Yesterday, I called and spoke to someone after only 30 mins of calling (who knew I was actually lucky yesterday!?) who told me she'd speak to her supervisor... she took my name/#/address... yeah right. No call back today, and my package was again attempted at the wrong address. No sticker on the 1st or 2nd attempt (because they didn't deliver to me), no doorbell ring on the 1st or 2nd attempt (because they didn't deliver to me) and now I can't get anybody on the telephone to request that they hold it (which is why I left my info for a supervisor in the first place - I should've known no one would call me back). Wow, how helpful! Good thing I paid $120 for a product that will probably end up getting shipped back to sender. TOTALLY USELESS. I ABHOR that this is my local post office. If I could tell every vendor to use UPS or FedEx from now on, I would. If I could skip sending holiday cards, trust me, I would. Waste of time, space, funds, etc. Sorry - but I'm continuously proven correct on this; wish I could review differently. PS: It's been a while since I've incessantly been redialing their #... and now I'm getting a consistent busy signal. I have asked for someone higher up to complain to and they give you a number to someone who doesn't care. This post office has all the components of what's right with New York (and wrong with most post offices.) There is grand architecture (think grand central station, except with letters instead of trains) people are genuinely helpful, and they move fast. I went in with a media rate package today, and discovered that the ATM -like postage dispensers didn't have a media rate tag, so I start walking to the line (which only had a few folks in it) and a Postal Service guy stops me and says, "credit or debit?", "huh?" I say... I explained how there was no "media rate" button on the automatic machine. So he redirected me to a normal scale (to figure out the cost at media rate), and walked me through the process of printing out non-standard postage stamps. Who knew? ... all of this to save me maybe a minute or two of standing in line. Best postal experience ever! read more

33 boxes. When I moved back to California, I shipped 33 boxes from this place, a few at a time. In my many interactions with the staff of this post office, I found everyone to be friendly and helpful. As other reviewers have said, the architecture rocks, and it feels wonderful and slightly transgressive to officially mail something late at night or on a Sunday. Pro-tip: to avoid schlepping heavy stuff up the iconic stairs, go around to the 33rd street entrance for the post office-within-the-post office. There's even a ramp down, in case you want to use a dolly that you're not officially supposed to use. (My wheeled filing box was apparently passable.) It's open more limited hours than the grand hall, but far more accessible. read more

I get such good vibrations from post offices. I dunno why. The dim green lights, the echoes of everything being done. I think it has to do with the absolute sense of giving in to a system so massive. Everyone here-- mothers with wailing blobs of baby, crackheaded carpenters, perfumed models, nervous, sweaty doctors, shifty-eyed Bronx guys--none of them can control a damn thing in here. You have no clout in the Mothership. You can't beat the United States Postal Service. You wanna fuck with? Okay. Postal Police. That shit is real. A fleet of Newmans in Crown Vics waiting to nail your ass. In any case, try being nice to the workers behind the gilded bars. Sure, they're grouchy, but they're fucking postal employees. Cut them some bread and offer them butter. And once you do, you realize they can be quite sweet, and most of them enjoy idle prattle about what a dick Bloomberg is, how much parking tickets fucking suck, or how much more darling the sunflowers in their backyard are than the ones on your stamps. read more

THIS is how a post office should be run! I can't believe that the same organization that runs this momument of efficiency has anything to do with that horror show in Kingsbridge, The Bronx! EVERYTIME I have been to this Post Office has been a good experience - even one unfortunate April 15th when I forgot to mail my tax returns and had to stand on that long a&@ line - guess what? It was very crowded but the lines moved! All other times, since this place never closes, I've been able to basically get "in and out" with no difficulty - picking up stamps, mailing a parcel or certified letter, whatever. They often post staff near the lines to answer questions. How 'bout that? Real honest to goodness customer service in the post office! Yup, they have it here! Man alive, this place is terrible. No one picks up the phone and they don't acknowledge the online re-delivery. You're left with no choice but to go to the office. The James A. Farley Post Office Building is one of the last bastions of incredibly grand New York Beaux Arts public interiors. On the National Register of Historic Places, it is worth a stroll and some snaps of the architecture...even late at night, until closing around 10 p.m. (I remember when it was open all night!). You can totally imagine old-timey well-dressed gentlemen spitting tobacco in some strategically placed spittoons here, a hundred-plus years ago. You can also come here to get postage stamps and mail your stuff. I would never phone dial this place. I mean, can you hear your echo-oooooo echo-ooooo down the vast hall? Yes, that is The Big Nothing answering you. This place is two full city blocks big and houses a postal museum. Just go in person. This post office is impressive. read more

One of my favorite post offices ever. Clean, quick, efficient and the service was polite and friendly. I love the interior, albeit bland, but open. The exterior is picture worthy - but I didn't want to seem like a tourist. I'm sure this will become a summer lunch spot. read more
