So far, I have had good experiences with this location. I needed to get a PO Box, and this location works best for me. With the exception of one worker, the rest are all very kind and helpful. With that being said, I have not seen that ONE worker since... He was VERY RUDE AND UNHELPFUL. Parking sucks. There is no lot. I try to go early morning to find a street spot. So far so good. The bullet proof enclosure of the workers was a bit frightening at first, but I TOTALLY GET IT! It's OAKLAND (sadly) speaking as a victim of crime/theft at my home. Went to the post office to ship a package and mail some letters. I arrived a little after 11:30 and the line was out the door. It took about 15 minutes before I was served. Maybe 10-10:30 is the golden hour. It would be nice if there was a dedicated parking lot, but I have a feeling the majority of patrons are walk-ups. I appreciate their constant cleanliness, knowledgeable employees, and their constant stock of domestic and international stamps. read more

The Fruitvale community post office is like that spot on your back that you never shave because you can't reach it. Wait, did I just admit that? 3 M I N U S E S - INSIDE: STANKY It's a beater post office, like a neglected and uninspiring outpost on the edge of the frontier. The janitor who mops the old green floor might do the same at a public middle school, because the level of maintenance is on par. - AMENITIES: JANKY There's no stamp machine, often no pens -- just the strings -- and there are random strips of old tape here and there. - PARKING: BLANKY Lack of parking is the main annoyance, but folks often park illegally because most have probably never gotten in trouble for it. I usually give up on this post office when all the illegal spots are taken too. 2 S T A R S * STAFF: NOT CRANKY... The clerks are 'lifers' and pleasant for the most part, resigned to their jobs behind tall plexiglass. You can find all the local denizens of the community lined up, at least three deep, upon every visit. * SERVICE: WELL, THANKY! If I could give it Zero stars I would. Today I faced an I counter dropping off my mail. I was in line and another customer that was behind me was yelling things to my 1 year old daughter I told the employee and he did nothing just stared at me and continue my purchase. As I was putting my mail in the box the lady continued to yell racist comments about immigrants talking about me being an immigrant I'm not offended just hurt me to see people in the community and even employees just being bystanders of such circumstances. The only reason I'm reviewing this is because I was looking for the nearest post office in my neighborhood (Fruitvale) and it wasn't listed on Yelp. Now it is. I'm just trying to do my part to spare others the pain of leaving Yelp to look in the Yellow Pages, internet, etc. This is a lovely post office located right across from the St. Elizabeth church and school. I recently went in on a weekday afternoon (because I was "working from home") and mailed some cds (Sean Hayes to my aunt, Bobby Baby to some friends) to New York, Seattle, and France. All together it only cost me about seven bucks. Why don't I send stuff to my friends more often? P.S. - it seems that most post offices I've been to lately - in Emeryville, the Haight, Piedmont Ave, etc. - are excruciatingly slow no matter what time of day you visit (and that goes a billion times for the Emeryville office). The Fruitvale office is never too crowded and I'm usually in and out in five minutes. read more

So the location is a bit sketch, especially considering the workers are enclosed by BULLET PROOF GLASS. Yes, you read that correctly BULLET PROOF GLASS. I am an online seller, so I need to utilize the post office frequently and this is the closest Post office to my new home. So I risk my life on a daily basis to save about 30 minutes each day. What can I say? I am all about convenience. So far, I haven't been shot at or anything, so I'd say the reward outweighs the risk here. The workers are fairly friendly, and helpful so that also influences my decision to use this post office as well. There's nothing worse than dealing with a rude, sour faced Sally as your first human encounter on a MONDAY morning. I've noticed that the packages I take here show tracking the same day, Usually within a couple of hours. That's much faster faster than they shown movement or updated tracking have in the past when I was living to San Leandro and taking my packages to the post office there. So I think it's safe to assume that the workers scan in packages quickly here; That's another plus for me. There is no parking lot here, but I have been lucky enough to get VIP street parking right in front every time I have come here. Also, there is never a ridiculous line or wait. Typically when I arrive, there are only one or two people in front of me. A couple of times there has been no line at all. All in all, I like this post office. I'm deeply offended by postal worker Sylvia from this branch. I was mailing a package and I only asked for tape she gets attitude and has nerve to ask me do it myself. I am injured and have cast on my left arm how the hell I'm I going to tape stupid paper on package lady!!!! Does not apologize but did do her job I hope they get training or get fired no wonder fedex and ups are kill this backward government institution thus it is not my fault there wages are crap! This is the best post office ever! (: I was here today with my sister to send a bunch of care packages to my brother-in-law who's serving in Iraq. It was quite busy today. (due to it being the week before Christmas...) But, this kind employee took time off his lunch break to come help me and my sister finish putting together the packages. He provided us with large flat rate boxes and even bigger boxes to stuff more items in. He also brought tape to us, and even assembled (taped) the boxes himself! Very on top of his job (even though he was on his lunch break!). He was of great assistance to many other customers in the lobby (not in line). And he has a great sense of humor. I was a little nervous about going to this post office when I walked in and saw that the counter is completely protected by bullet proof glass. But I told myself to not wimp out and just get my package mailed! My wait in line was very short as the post office was not very busy. The woman that helped me was very friendly, accommodating and had a good sense of humor. I came ill-prepared and had to borrow some tape to tape up my package. She kindly put a roll of tape in the bullet proof lazy susan type of rotating case and spun it over to my side of the counter. I was not able to tear the piece of tape by my brute strength alone. She noticed me struggling and slid some small playschool type of childs' safety scissors into the little metal tray underneath the glass without my having to ask. She apologized for childs' scissors saying that they didn't allow the employees to have anything sharp. And then she cracked that they were afraid someone "might go postal" I had to laugh. The one thing that was a big inconvenience was that the debit/credit card machine was out of order during my visit. They had signs posted saying this but I failed to notice them until after my transaction was in process and she already had my package behind the counter. I had to leave and find an ATM to get cash. The nice postal worker held my package for me and was grateful when I did return to complete the transaction. read more

Man F**** this post office. First, doesn't even look like a post office; driving from one side it has some Ghetto let's stop the hate lame ass mural on one side. Post office employees are not motivated. If you are shipping with a pre-paid shipping label beware, *They do not care to scan the item. *Even if you ask they will tell you they don't have to scan it. *If it gets lost they said you never turned it in. *If you ask them to check that the postage is sufficient, they'll say "it should be ok, its prepaid for a reason" even though you don't have a scale at home. Vicky, one of the employee's there does not like to weight prepaid postage labels even if you ask her. If she sees you with one of those prepaid labels/packages, she will say "Next time leave your prepaid package there" However if the package gets returned three days later and you go back she will tell you again, to "Next time leave it there", so you have to be very patient and ask her to please check the package because it was returned and need extra postage and that next time she should listen to customers concern and ensure this will not happen again. She will also hate to add postage because she believes it is our job to ensure proper postage was bought in the first place without the tools that they have there. She just wants to move the packages left at the window and leave them for someone else to scan them. And to add to this Vicky will Deny everything, she will try to find an excuse rather than focus on what needs to be done to send that package off and ensure its delivery. This station is: *Very slow *Usually one person working and at the best will be two. *Lack shipping materials. Even the basic priority boxes. *Again every singe employee there, have an attitude of "do not care", "Customers don't know what they are asking" Yes I wrote it that way because if you ask them something, it seems that you are talking to them in another foreign language, regardless if you're speaking English. *They will not have your package even if a note was left. They will send you to the coliseum one. Then seven days later you go back to see if they found the package and they tell you that it was there the whole time and magically appeared but they forgot to call you because it is your responsibility to come check for your package, so they sent it back to sender, because you took to long. Somehow they've managed to "deliver" my packages however nothing was delivered. I waited for this one package, saw the mail person deliver my letters mail, but no packages. I immediately went to track package and sure enough it said delivered. I got nothing. I called the manager Susan at the Pardee Hub, she was always busy and after about five weeks, I talked to her, saying the package has a status of "delivered", it was like talking with a person with learning disabilities. She missed the whole point. I never got three packages. One of them was returned because mail person couldn't tell the A side from the B side of building and was refused by "me" on the other side of the building. Another one, "status not updated" never received, they don't know what happen to that package. Three packages, never received. Ridiculous. This is a very good post office in a safe area w/ no worries about nosy or shady clerks all in your mail or business. Few of the clerks have been there for awhile and will work w/ us the best they can. I had to get a p.o box there about 2 yrs ago and have had only 2 complaints w/ the same clerk. I added my nephew to the po box and specifically reminded them not to forget to add his name to the back of the box for the clerk slotting mail. Yet, after 2 months of no mail, we found out she also returned his "driver's license" which he needed for a court date & was FURIOUS! Luckily she was very apologetic & humbly owned up to the mistake or we would have blamed DMV, lol. Lastly, I admit the lines can appear very long there being it's a small p.office. Also, like someone stated below me, few x's I've observed chit chatting amongst clerks, or clerks MIA during busy hrs. I simply knock on the door next to the inside slots and request help for the clerk at the window. On the other hand, I've also observed ppl holding the clerks up w/ the dumbest questions, or have the clerks answer the same silly question 4,6 different ways..all leading to the same answer. And, knowing dang well there's a long line of ppl waiting. Regs know the busiest hrs, yet come between those x's, like I myself have done *gulp* and many do go there to mail off pkgs to Mexico being its the Fruitvale area & across from St Liz Church. All in all, the clerks there are all good, trustworthy, caring decent human beings w/ integrity who obviously enjoy working in that community. Let me just start by saying "I hate this post-office." Here is the breakdown of my experience with them over the past 5 years. Pros: 1) Its 5 minutes from my house. 2) They sell postage stamps and the like. Cons: 1) You will always have to wait in a long and slow line. Generally, they only have one person on the register, even though you can see and hear about 3 more people walking around in the back. The person who is on the register is slow, doesn't care, and doesn't want to be at work. So you will usually have to stand there for a minute to be acknowledged. Sometimes the person who is at the register will walk off, and then eventually return while the patrons such as myself have to wait around like zombies. There are 3 registers at the window, but only one person at a time is ever on the register. Must be nice to have a government job, where you can treat people like crap, don't have to do quality work, get great pay and benefits, Sundays and all holidays off. 2) Most of the time, the customer service is poor. There is one lady there that is nice to me (I forget her name, but she speaks Spanish and she is usually the only one who can find my mail). As for the others, they don't greet you, say sorry for the wait, kiss my butt - nothing. Most of the time, it's like a "what do you want attitude." I see now why they have the bullet-proof glass up. They need it. 3) There is almost always some confusion on them finding my mail when the postal worker has left the pink slip. They tell me "Your mail isn't here - go to the one at the Coliseum, " or "we can't find it -there is no mail here for you." Even though on the pink slip it clearly has the address and the tracking number. They must have a poor filing system in the back. 4) They don't have most of the materials you need to ship stuff out front. Besides the envelopes and the boxes, you can forget it. If you need a shipping confirmation or any of the other forms, you must stand in line and wait 45+ minutes with all the other zombies. 5) shipping is insanely high - enough said. 6) they never have a variety of the forever stamps. While this is not a big deal, it is a nuisance. Sometimes I want the Christmas variety for Christmas, or Valentine's day etc. You can forget those here. 7) Place is dirty, and a complete eye sore. 8) Parking is almost impossible. This post office is right beside a school, and it is next to impossible to get close parking. You will almost always have to park illegally or walk quite a distance. Bottom line: Postal services as a whole in Oakland are poor. I can't tell you how many times the mailman just throws my stuff down in the apartment complex hallway to have it be stolen by one of my neighbors who has mistaken my package for their early Christmas present. This post office is horrible, and I wouldn't recommend using them. In fact, I wouldn't recommend using postal services at all. With the exception of the one lady that I know here, they are rude, and their customer service is poor. They lose your mail regularly. And you have to wait forever for the crappy service. My husband dropped off a UPS box there by mistake and it's been two months now and so far, that package cannot be found. They said they had a process in place where they take packages over to UPS if they are dropped off at the post office by mistake. Well, it was a zappos box with $200 worth of shoes in there so I have no choice but to think that someone stole the box of shoes instead of following their policy and dropping it off at UPS. It's very sad to me to think that it was stolen instead of returned to UPS so it could be shipped back to zappos. I won't go there again, I can't trust them. read more

My experience at this post office shows what's wrong with unmotivated and untrained low-income workers in America. The man helping me at this post office did not ship my prepaid packages because they were slightly (less than 10% heavier) than the weight specified on their prepaid labels. He told me to go home, reprint my labels and come back after waiting in line for 15 minutes. I live far away and reprinting my labels would've taken over 30 min. I had to get to work. I did not have time to do something he could easily fix on his computer in less than 5 minutes. He didn't want to help me. This Asian post office worker was faced with a slight problem and he did not have the incentive to provide customer service and instead wanted me to deal with my USPS problem elsewhere. I'm Asian so I understand why Asian immigrants may be rude and lacking in the customer service area, it's just part of their culture. Typical small, neighborhood post office. The people who work here are generally friendly (sometimes overly so, as others have observed - excessive chattiness with regulars and co-workers can happen sometimes). I'm often in and out in 5-10 minutes. The workers here know what they're doing (more so than the "not really the actual USPS" postal contractor places, like the one in the Nob Hill Grocery location just over the Fruitvale bridge in Alameda). They're also sometimes more helpful than overworked employees at the "you're just a number" huge USPS locations like in downtown Oakland. I've people at this one go out of their way to look three times for a missing package (finally found, filed under the wrong address), without me having to get grumpy about it. I rarely have a hard time parking here at all, and usually get a spot right across the street. It's also near Chase and US Bank, various restaurants, clothes shops, etc., so if you get a good spot, you can go do some other stuff, too. It's also right near Fruitvale BART and the AC Transit 1 bus. The main downside is it has more limited hours than many locations, and closes at 5pm even on weekdays. PS: Just because they made a movie about a wrongful police shooting at the BART station here doesn't mean this is some kind of terribly dangerous neighborhood. It's just not full of rich, snotty hipsters and entitled, socialistic pseudo-hippies, like much of the rest of the Bay Area is overrun with. read more
