I recently moved, and wanted to keep my new address private to the extent possible. Prior to officially updating my address with the United States Postal Service, I checked their policy on their website regarding the sharing of address information. From the USPS site: 'We do not sell customer or mailing lists to outside parties, including marketers. We protect your information under the Privacy Act. We only share your information in the following limited situations: to a congressional office on your behalf; to financial entities regarding financial transaction issues; to a USPS auditor; to entities, including law enforcement, as required by law or in legal proceedings; to customs agencies relating to outgoing international mail; to contractors and other entities to fulfill your product or service; or with your consent.' I came to find out too late that these assurances are completely false and misleading. Immediately after my change of address was processed, I started getting flooded with various solicitation mailers at my new address. I then found out through further research that when you change your address with USPS, they sell your new address to literally hundreds of entities. Please read the July 2013 Forbes article titled 'How The Post Office Sells Your Address Update To Anyone Who Pays (And The Little-Known Loophole To Opt Out)' for a more complete picture of the disturbing reality of the situation. From the referenced article: 'The Postal Service set up its current National Change of Address program, sometimes abbreviated as NCOA, in 1986. Until 2002, the USPS licensed to just 22 companies. After complaints about privacy violations, they reformatted the data to assure only those with the former address could obtain the new information, according to spokesman Roy Betts. That change allowed the postal service to distribute the address changes more widely. Today they license to about 500 companies.' 'USPS justifies the program on the grounds that they don't 'sell' the list but license its use. That is a subterfuge. Supposedly, you only get a new address if you have the old address already. Because data brokers have every household in America in their files, the information goes from NCOA to the data brokers, who flag every change and resell lists of new movers to anyone.' Disgraceful. This is a federal agency funded by citizens' tax dollars, and this is the amount of reverence they treat our most sacred personal information with. Whenever I move in the future, I will never again submit a change of address to USPS. The better course of action is to update your address only with essential organizations you personally do business with, and use a PO Box for a mailing address wherever possible. Live and learn, but we shouldn't have to utilize such work-arounds to gain a basic modicum of privacy. And for the record, I am well aware there is virtually no data privacy anymore, but the government should certainly not be perpetuating the problem - and getting paid for it. There are people, including domestic violence survivors, for whom the consequences can be absolutely dire if their residential information is not kept private. I looked into this further as well, and supposedly there is a program through the state you can apply to in order to keep your address private, but even if you're 'approved', there are no teeth in the rules, and private businesses are not required to honor the request. They also sell quality artistic stamps. I purchased a box that includes self adhesive tape so no need for scissors and tape. You will encounter a line of at least 5 ppl when you arrive. I stopped by this post office and had a surprisingly smooth experience. I started my day later than planned and expected to run into a long line, but to my surprise (and secret relief), there was only one person ahead of me. At the counter, the clerk was friendly and helpful. When I mentioned what was inside my package, he kindly added "Fragile" stickers to the box without hesitation, which I really appreciated. I prefer this location over the one on the west end, especially because the parking situation here is much easier and more convenient. read more

The lobby is open 24/7, thank you. I made the mistake yesterday of trying to drop off letters (5 inches worth. I know, due to my travels, I have not checked my mail for a long time) and a package in 3 SL post offices. The employees here are the best (again compared to SL and Reno). Far from perfect, but at least the majority of the employees here get the job done. Do not expect friendly or efficient service from any USPS. Atmosphere - 5 stars. Huge lobby, 24/7 for both letters and mail drop off. No homeless, well at least for a long time now. Not sure if the mall security watches this location also...? Plenty of mall parking. Easy in and out. Convenient to many other mall amenities, including my favorite Starbucks (sorry I have not been there in a while). Service - 3, good enough. At minimum they have not lost any of my packages. Price - N/A, see their websites. Owner Comment - Congrats on your success since 1971 (formed in Washington DC) with your $80B in revenue. Much controversy about your profitability or lack of it. This is an "independent" agency of the executive branch of our US government. This should be a negative review, but it's not because the system works. I bought something on Ebay. Yesterday the USPS reported it delivered to my house. I looked, no package! Was it stolen? Or was it mis-delivered to the wrong house? Well, it was insured and it had tracking. So I decided to escalate the case to "lost mail delivery." As soon as I hit the ENTER key, I got an email saying the USPS has forwarded my claim to the proper office. By 9:00am I received an email from the Main Post Office in Alameda, that by case would be investigated ASAP. By 4pm, I got a phonecall from a person at the Alameda Post Office telling me my package was found. The carrier delivered it to the wrong house. He recovered it, and delivered it to my house. I had to mail a birthday card for my Mother. I walked in this gym of a place. Right off I was warmly greeted. The postal worker was so friendly. She asked was certain stamps ok? I attempted to send snacks to a friend in The Netherlands today. I didn't get her name but the African American lady working the retail counter was incredibly kind and patient with us. She showed us grace and patience with a sense of humor as we were fumbling around with boxes and bags of cookies. We ended sending only 1/3 packages due to the high shipping costs but we left with a funny story to tell and enough chips throw a party. I went to this post office branch today and there was a man in front of me attempting to pick up a package. I overheard the lady helping him tell him that he will have to come back on Monday. The man replied with "very good" and was about to be on his way but then the employee went off on him. Saying that she doesn't like when people say "very good" and that he should just reply with "thank you". I can tell that the guy was shocked and I even heard him ask "are you serious?" The lady continued to be rude and belittle the man before dismissing him. The guy left clearly confused about what just happened. This employee needs some more training on customer service, and if she doesn't enjoy her job and cannot help but be rude, then she should look for a new one. read more

I have been coming to this location since me and my husband moved to Alameda 4 years ago! Our favorite sales representative is Kerry! Everytime we go in, he is beyond polite and jovial - recently me and my husband went in to mail a letter and we witnessed Kerry being targeted not only by his co worker who called him names (homophobic slurs) but his supervisors as well! Going to this post office is a COVID-19 superspreader event waiting to happen. There is only one self serve machine here and it's always out of service. The post office itself is understaffed and the ones that do work here are very slow and servicing customers so the lines are always out the door and down the hallway. There are also homeless sleeping in the lobby at night. I've had to step around one before just to access my PO Box. read more

If I could give them zero stars I would. Staff is incredibly disrespectful , I went in for a passport service & they told me I could only be seen by appointment. I had called the day before to ask and they said they take walk ins and even their website says they do so as well. I spoke to the person in charge MARIA they had me wait for 10 minutes just to have her speak to me. She was giving me a lot of attitude as if she was not happy with having to do her job. Look for somewhere else to work if you are that unhappy with having to deal with customers. You wasted my time, I will definitely not be going back, I am not at all surprised that you have low stars. I personally didn't have any issues with their passport services today, which was a relief considering the horrible experience I had at the Oakland usps last week for my original passport appointment, but I simply had to walk out then due to horrible service! Pro-tip: schedule TWO passport appointments at 2 different facilities just in case the first one doesn't go well or they cancel on you, which is what happened to me 2 months ago so I had to reschedule. You can always cancel the 2nd one of the 1st one goes well. I ended up booking an appt for 7/23 at Oakland as well as 7/28 at Alameda. And sure enough, my appt the 23rd went horribly so thank goodness I had a backup appt. otherwise, appointments were booked over a month out when I checked! I had an appointment this morning and while their passport attendant didn't necessarily come off as being the most friendly guy around, he certainly wasn't rude and was quick to get me in and out! Granted, I was very polite and when he brought me to the back, I had all my documents ready to go that I neatly lined up on the counter for him rather than handing him a stack of papers. I also filled my DS-11 form out online and printed it to bring with me to my appointment to save my time of having to fill it out there. As someone who has worked in customer service, retail, restaurants, etc., I can somewhat understand the frustration he probably goes through on a daily basis, especially with such a repetitive job of appointment after appointment and people not following the guidelines. Just in the 15 minutes I waited for my appointment to start, 1 couple came in asking if they could submit their passport application, though they didn't have an appointment. There are signs clearly posted at both the main entrance as well as the passport office entrance that their passport services REQUIRE appointments. There was another customer who wasn't too keen on the fact that he had to submit the original birth certificate as well as the photocopy..... I understand being weary about having to separate from your birth certificate... but on travel.state.gov, it clearly says you have to submit your *original* evidence of U.S. citizenship as well as a photocopy. It's standard protocol. Does this justify being disrespectful? No not at all, but I didn't experience any form of disrespect from him. This was my first time ever applying for a passport, but the usps website and travel website have very clear instructions of what is required for submitting a passport application. For first-time applicants, bring the following: - form DS-11 - original evidence of US Citizenship - photocopy of evidence of US Citizenship on regular white printer paper 8.5x11 BLACK AND WHITE INK ONLY, single sided - current ID - photocopy of current ID, front (and back if it has printed information) on regular white paper 8.5x11, also BLACK AND WHITE INK ONLY, single sided (other reviews say it should be in color, no. The travel.state.gov says B&W - screenshot attached) - your passport photo (or you can pay $15 for him to take it there) - fees: you can purchase a money order directly from him during your appointment. Altogether my cost was $175 for the passport book and card, + application fee, I paid my fees with $160 cash and the rest with debit card without any issues, he was able to accept both payment methods in a single transaction. I personally don't own a checkbook, but safe to know you don't have to be concerned if you don't have any personal checks! Every time I go there and request priority mail stamps, they don't have them. Today, the service representative was not helpful. She curtly said to come back the next day and her supervisor would issue them. They should have a supervisor there when they are open to handle these issues. I find it hard to believe there was no supervisor present at the time to "issue" priority mail stamps. Bless the souls that work here!! Since the pandemic I have been coming here weekly to mail out work documents since I'm now working from home nearby. Every single time I come in there's some ridiculously obnoxious customer hooting and hollering about a trivial issue (most of which are not the fault of USPS, but rather folks not paying attention to thinks like adding passport pix to passport apps or not filling out the right doc, etc.). Today I walked in to a man saying "I hope they shut this place down", surely referring to the atrocity USPS is facing. He was furious and a manager had to come- the manager (Black male, didn't catch his name tag) handled it VERY WELL, even after the angry customer tossed the package on the counter. I was right next to them, being helped by Rod who equally managed to stay calm despite the ruckus happening a foot away from us. I'm aware my last review was 1 Star and related to the passport service, but now updating because after what I've seen the past weeks these folks honestly all deserve medals for what they're forced to put up with! read more

Very nice people! They didn't seem like the typical rude workers but the guy was a little passive aggressive. I went in to simply ask for an update because there's a deadline for me to have my packaged to be shipped otherwise, the order would cancel. I did everything right and am very glad I took a photo of my packaging being dropped off. As you can see, it's been 2 days (~60hrs) since Ive dropped off the package and it still doesn't show that it was scanned in. Of course I would be concerned. The guy that helped me kept saying to be patient. "You just gotta be patient". I absolutely understand but this is a package for a customer that paid $ for it and that it's kind of chaotic during this time. I only drove all the way to Alameda to follow up because clearly, it wasn't showing on my end that it was ever scanned. Yes just like everyone else's review says, passport renewal drop-ins are no longer available. If you're first in line and trying to do a walk-in, you might be lucky enough to get an appointment if someone is a no-show. Fortunately, I was very lucky and the attendant was nice enough to let me squeeze in before the other appointments. He was flexible as long as I had all the necessary items. I was even able to take my passport photo there for $15. The cost of a passport is $110, and the processing fee is $35. Photo copy your birth certificate and Driver's License (front and back). Money orders and personal checks only. They sell money orders at the passport counter and you can buy with a debit card. read more

Want to bond with a stranger? Just hate on your local post office and your likely to hit it off. Everybody has that in common. Been coming here for years since I live nearby. This one is not that bad for what I've personally needed it for. I've never needed anything in particular like passports but for what little I needed they treated me well. Easy parking and a great location right next to the bay. Knock out two birds with one stone and go for a walk by the water after you buy your stamps. I was at this post office this morning to send a package to France ( my first time ) and I was standing in line with my husband until the postal worker called us over. I was very polite with her and I said " Hello, how are you doing ?" She ignored me but I was ok with that , we then put the box on the counter and before we said anything , she stated yelling at my husband for no reason telling him to go to the table over there and close the box ( she could be nice and polite but she was very very RUDE ) , I did not understand why she did that with us. All customers noticed and one customer told me that she was scared to ask her for help after what she saw. We set schedule for passport a month before and try to match ours work schedule. Come to the appointment and the lady name Maria/Milah said the passport guys is call in sick and later said system down. She only can take appointments with pictures already taken. So we go get pictures taken a Walgreens and come back. She then said we have to come back tomorrow. We both work and reserved this day a months before. This is so inconvenient and time consuming for us. We did not get a solution of how this going to do and just got turn away. The supervisor Doug is the biggest snake ever . Completely knew he was in the WRONG, yet had the decency to put it back on ME when I had clear confirmation emails and receipts. FOH. I've never been so P.O. in my life. Had a package delivered to my house, but no one was home so they left a slip saying I could either reschedule for redelivery or pick up. I rescheduled for another delivery date online and got my confirmation emails. The package NEVER showed up on the day. Went in the next day to see where it is, and they had the nerve to tell me they shipped it back to the sender (Mind the fact that this was a package from Japan). I was livid because 1) they're supposed to hold my package for 5 business days regardless. Yet, they sent back the package on the 5th day's morning. That makes no SENSE 2) they never came to redeliver my package, even tho I have two confirmation emails The supervisor Doug straight up knew they messed up (judging by his expression and him going back to confirm with whoever tf works in the back) and had the decency to come back up to me and say it was my fault for not coming in earlier. I showed him all the receipts and confirmation emails I got about redelivery , but he didn't care. Also, I showed him the protocols of how to handle a package if it isn't delivered through their website and he still didn't care. He straight up implied that those protocols don't apply to the post office here. LOL. What a joke. And the fact that he knew he was wrong and still tried to make it out like it was my fault got me wanting to destroy him. I would've been fine if he just straight up owned up the mistake his office did and moved on with my life. But naw, this guys a snake and tried to pin point the issue on me when I was absolutely in the RIGHT with receipts and proof that they should've never sent that package back.
