I recently moved, and wanted to keep my new address private to the extent possible…read more Prior to officially updating my address with the United States Postal Service, I checked their policy on their website regarding the sharing of address information. From the USPS site: 'We do not sell customer or mailing lists to outside parties, including marketers. We protect your information under the Privacy Act. We only share your information in the following limited situations: to a congressional office on your behalf; to financial entities regarding financial transaction issues; to a USPS auditor; to entities, including law enforcement, as required by law or in legal proceedings; to customs agencies relating to outgoing international mail; to contractors and other entities to fulfill your product or service; or with your consent.' I came to find out too late that these assurances are completely false and misleading. Immediately after my change of address was processed, I started getting flooded with various solicitation mailers at my new address. I then found out through further research that when you change your address with USPS, they sell your new address to literally hundreds of entities. Please read the July 2013 Forbes article titled 'How The Post Office Sells Your Address Update To Anyone Who Pays (And The Little-Known Loophole To Opt Out)' for a more complete picture of the disturbing reality of the situation. From the referenced article: 'The Postal Service set up its current National Change of Address program, sometimes abbreviated as NCOA, in 1986. Until 2002, the USPS licensed to just 22 companies. After complaints about privacy violations, they reformatted the data to assure only those with the former address could obtain the new information, according to spokesman Roy Betts. That change allowed the postal service to distribute the address changes more widely. Today they license to about 500 companies.' 'USPS justifies the program on the grounds that they don't 'sell' the list but license its use. That is a subterfuge. Supposedly, you only get a new address if you have the old address already. Because data brokers have every household in America in their files, the information goes from NCOA to the data brokers, who flag every change and resell lists of new movers to anyone.' Disgraceful. This is a federal agency funded by citizens' tax dollars, and this is the amount of reverence they treat our most sacred personal information with. Whenever I move in the future, I will never again submit a change of address to USPS. The better course of action is to update your address only with essential organizations you personally do business with, and use a PO Box for a mailing address wherever possible. Live and learn, but we shouldn't have to utilize such work-arounds to gain a basic modicum of privacy. And for the record, I am well aware there is virtually no data privacy anymore, but the government should certainly not be perpetuating the problem - and getting paid for it. There are people, including domestic violence survivors, for whom the consequences can be absolutely dire if their residential information is not kept private. I looked into this further as well, and supposedly there is a program through the state you can apply to in order to keep your address private, but even if you're 'approved', there are no teeth in the rules, and private businesses are not required to honor the request. This must change. I had mailed several of these envelopes at other Oakland post offices this month and I've never been asked to fill the forms out myself. There was no one else in the room other than my husband and me, so it wasn't like they were busy. But okay, fine, I went over the table she indicated and didn't know which forms I was supposed to choose, and I didn't have my glasses, so I picked out two and filled them in. Went back to the window, and she said sharply, "NO! the xyz form!" I didn't know what on earth she meant, so I said, "fine, I'll just go somewhere else." Realizing that I didn't have time to drive to another post office, I went back inside. By now, there was a line. My husband went up to her window and asked which forms I needed, and she barked at him, too. Then she started yelling at me, and I yelled back, and it was a totally awful scene, I've never lost my temper in public in my life, but here I was, this crazy 78-YO lady shouting across the room in the post office. I know I could have handled it better, but for some reason, her unwillingness to do her job just really got to me

I waited for at least an hour until I see this guy named Chris and I asked if he's the supervisor and he said no and I asked him if he can help me find my package in the back and he said he will try and he did find it! Thanks to Chris. He's a great employee and worked so fast. He also found someone else's packages that was in the back too and the ladies turned her away saying the same that they couldn't find hers. The rest of the clerks there need customer service training as they are so rude/dismissive and need to not be lazy looking for packages. They should learn from Chris. 5 stars for Chris. 0 stars for those two older lady employees there. If your package is there, be persistent and talk to their manager or supervisor or Chris. It sits right on one of the main retail streets in Alameda, Webster Street. Parking is metered out front and rarely available. There are a zillion businesses nearby that compete for those spaces. I usually end up parking on Central Avenue, which is 1 block away. Or just going residential in the streets to the south.

I received an empty box with a sticker that said 94615, which is the zip code for this particular post office. I contacted the shipper. They have strict packing guidelines and assured me that they'd never send out an empty box. This isn't the first time that something has been stolen from this post office. Avoid this place if you can!

And it was a NICE pen too! Before you remind me that I go every single year and how did I not remember that I fill out the money order, just hush. My receipt was printed at exactly 5:00p sharp so my transaction was completed by closing time. Instead of simply helping me, Larry kept going back and forth with me about how I was inconveniencing him by arriving so close to closing. He even said he still had to walk me out and unlock the door, as if that was somehow my fault. I'm leaving this review so management is aware of how customers are being treated. You also need a number, which I recommend picking up right when the post office opens at 8:30. Got there at 8am and was third in line. Get there any later and you're likely waiting all day. The people who run the passport office are nice and friendly. I just can't believe this is the process to get a passport in 2016. My advice: the earlier you get there, the better. Good luck!
