Update: Passport office hours are 7:30am to 3:30pm M-F, 7:00am to 12:00pm Saturday, closed Sunday. Arrived at 7:45am on a Saturday on received ticket 60 out of 75 for the day. Tickets are one per party. Individuals who come together don't need separate tickets. The information posted on the lobby window states the office opens at 8:00am, as does the USPS website. We were surprised to find the office open and a room full of people before the listed open time. Lowering my rating a star for the hours not published accurately. read more

I never thought I'd give a post office a yelp review... or a 5-star one at that! I came to mail my taxes at 7pm on tax day, and after waiting for over an hour and a half at a different post office earlier in the day, I was shocked at how fast these folks moved through the line! The line was out the door, but the efficiency and operations they had here was astounding! It was like watching a military operation go off without a hitch. To top it off, the person helping me, Judy had the best attitude and was so friendly despite the insane line of folks. When I mentioned how great their system was, she credited it all to the supervisor. Mad kudos to the supervisor, when your employees are giving you props to customers, you know you're doing everything right. read more

Probably the most inefficient branch of the federal government. This is literally the definition of inefficiency. The roads to get here are horrible and the entrance to get into the facilities have huge bumps so be careful with your car. If you're going to the passport center, they only accept cash, check, or money order. Even though it says they accept cards on the website, they don't. read more

Not for the first time, the carrier has rolled a magazine into a cylinder and shoved it into the mailbox, on top of other mail. In this instance, the Netflix DVD was ruined. Magazines should go into the bin below the boxes if they won't easily fit into the letter box. I took pictures of the destroyed mail, walked down to the Clayton Street Post Office and waited in the always present line. When it was my turn, I showed the clerk the picture and he said: "We have nothing to do with the carriers. You'll have to speak to the Post Master, call this number (and he wrote 550-5159)" END OF CONVERSATION - next in line please! I called the number assuming it was a 415-number and guess what? NO ANSWER - not even an answering machine! So I thought to myself - well maybe it's an 800-number. WRONG! That is "One-Eight Hundred-Free Sex" I can't help but find some irony in the whole thing. -sigh- I've put the picture below the mailboxes and instructed the carrier, in future, to put my magazines in the bin so this damage won't happen again. So, when I came home this afternoon, the note was still hanging below the mailboxes and guess what was in my mailbox? TWO magazines. I finally got an answer at the number I was given and the woman who answered (after 25 rings) said I should go to my local post office! I said I had and they told me to call the number she answered. So she gave a different number. By then it was to late. to call. I called the new number and it was immediately answered by a very nice woman in the Past Master's office. She explained that mailboxes than can be accessed from the street are considered unsecure so the carrier would get in trouble for leaving magazines in the bin below the mailboxes because they might be stolen. She suggested I remove the picture and put instructions on my mailbox where it can be easily seen. That will relieve the postal employee from liability, should one of my magazines end up stolen. I was so nervous about coming here because of all the reviews about long lines and everything. Today is Wednesday and I arrived by 8:30am. Walked into the post office and already felt pretty good about it because the waiting area was pretty empty. Went to grab a number and I was #17, which wasn't bad at all because they were on #13 already. If you have all your documents and everything ready it should be quick and efficient. I filled out forms online and made photo copies before arrival. However, they can help you do photos and copies there (with a mini fee i think). They only accept cash or check as well, so I had cash and they helped me with the money order. Also, I've had very bad experiences previously trying to get my passport done, but everyone was really nice. I was out in 30 minutes! Daughter's Passport Renewal The drive out to this location was well worth it, as we ended up experiencing the best postal employee service, ever! We used their Saturday walk-in hours and hoped for the best, and that's what we got. Unfortunately, we didn't receive the employees name, but the receipt shows clerk 08. 08 facilitated us with getting in and out within 15 minutes, which included a photo taken. 08 was friendly, professional and funny. Drop-in passport update - We've gone twice now and did not get a passport taken care of. We were 5th in the drop line and were told that those on the first page of the waitlist would be seen. 7 hours later, we were never called due to appointments and also a surprising "priority list" for those that dropped in two weeks ago and couldn't get their passport renewal taken care of. Poor management of resources by the USPS at this location. There was one dedicated agent doing renewals and a second agent who could do renewals but also helped with normal front counter work (stamps, mailing) even though they already had two agents fully staffed for it. Why would you have your one useful passport agent doing unnecessary work? Never coming back here again. read more

Judy! We dropped off a package late tonight and simply wanted stamps. But noooo Judy takes it to the extra mile and gives you a good time showing us all of the various stamps for sale. There were textured ones, scratch and sniff and much more...we were happy to take anything with her fantastic enthusiasm. But the last set was of John Lennon...we were sold at that point. What a delightful person even at the end of her shift. Id literally go out of my way to see her again. I've never felt that way about a post office or anyone in them. *FOR PASSPORT RENEWAL* 5 stars for customer service and my experience. I was reading all the other reviews and it really helped prepare for my experience here. I had to renew my passport and this location had the earliest appointment time for me. According to their website Mon-Fri it's by appointments but Saturdays they accept Walk-Ins. It can be a little tricky when you first arrive for passport but once you enter to the main area, it's the post office first and then for passport it's in another room on your right. Because I made an appointment, I didn't have any wait time, turned in my documents and paid for the fees and it took less than 10 minutes. The staff member was helpful in answering questions and had an overall good attitude. read more

United States Postal Service San Francisco Main Office maybe located in a neighborhood not a lot of people would venture out to. People are saying this area is dangerous which is true! However, the views surrounding BayView Hunter's Point and Naval Shipyard facility - gorgeous. Bodies of water can be seen from a distance so I like the view. For safety concerns, this area is not the spot to venture out to at night. Okay, returning to the main point: They are open until 8:30 pm during weekdays and the indoor lobby drop box area is open 24 hours. Parking lot is available here? Props to this amenity and this is indeed a convenience for postal customers. BayView Plaza Shopping Center is within a distance from here. Overall, the USPS San Francisco Headquarter is good. The location is dangerous especially when it gets dark and throughout the night. This facility would probably attract more people to come and take care of their postal transactions if this area is more safer. It will probably be even better if we can see police officers patrolling the area. PARKING: This USPS facility has a private parking lot exclusively for its customers. MUNI: 19 POLK & 44 O'SHAUGHNESSY passes by this post office 8/30/2012 This post office facility has the drive-thru mailbox amenity available just like the USPS facility near the Daly City DMV field office. Came on a Friday around 1:30pm, the entire process took maybe 15 minutes - wait time, application review, photo, and payment (they take debit/credit). The gentleman who assisted me was super helpful and friendly. I paid for standard processing time (4-6 weeks) but he told me it could only take 2-3 weeks (expedited processing time). This is the place you have to come to get a passport. BE WARNED THERE ARE NO RESTROOMS. There are people here with newborn babies and children, and elderly people and pregnant women waiting hours with no restroom. Wear a Depends or bring a cup to pee into in the parking lot. Parking is available in a fairly large lot in front of the post office. As others noted, once you enter the post office, ignore the ticket counter on the left and beeline to the door on the right just past the ticket counter. Make sure to go directly to the counter in the room and take a number (and don't lose it). I needed to get my infant daughter her first passport. We came here on a Saturday around 7:30 a.m. The room already 53 people in it. Each person takes about 15 to 20 minute turnaround time, depending on whether they have their paperwork ready. So we went home. We came again around 7:40 a.m. on a weekday. SO much better. We were out within 45 minutes and were about 4th in line. There were two employees processing people. I don't think I've seen more than 3 processing people at any given time. The post office could definitely improve the process by increasing the number of employees processing passports, especially on Saturdays. This 5 star just for Judy, the very nice and efficient asian lady who kills the line at the passport application faster than my honda civic goes from 0 to 60 mph. Came here at 3pm, the number counter says 80, and i got number 11 (or number 111, because it have to go to 100 before it goes back to 0 ).. and it took 2.5 hrs to reach 91.. as soon as Judy shows up, my number called within 15 minutes!!! That's 20 customer served within 15 minutes!!! She might get a speeding ticket since this location is next to school!!! Where have you been all this time Judy, you ROCK!!! I'm glad my tax dollar goes to her, you glorious speedy worker!! Aside from her, i would give 1 star for overall slow, no smile services and NO bathroom!! I had an outstanding walk-in passport application experience on Saturday, 10/14/23. We came to apply for passports for our two kids on a Saturday morning at 7:45 AM without an appointment and were second in line. There were two USPS employees processing passport applications and we were helped within 10 minutes. The employee helping us was really kind and thorough. We hadn't brought photocopies of our documents and our passport photos didn't quite meet all the criteria, but that was fine because she took photos of our kids for $15 each and photocopied our documents for us. Even though we'd filled out and printed the forms at home, the process still took ~45 minutes because there's a lot of paperwork that the employees have to do. Still, we were in and out within an hour. Efficiency isn't their strong suit because there are only two employees on Saturday mornings and they prioritize thoroughness over efficiency, but once you are helped, you'll be well taken care of. I'm really glad we came here and have nothing but good things to say about the experience. I definitely recommend getting here early to avoid waiting, though. read more

If you're also here for a passport don't make the same mistake I made, avoid waiting in the front line, go straight into the small room to the right. I walked in that room and before I even went to grab a number some guy came up and helped me immediately. Gave him the 4 required documents: 1. Proof of citizenship (Naturalization certificate, they made a photocopy for me, but they also kept the original which will be returned after the process) 2. Self photo (from Costco) 3. Passport application (He had me rewrite it because sloppy writing haha, no problem only 3 minutes) 4. Check (NO NEED TO WRITE A CHECK! THEY CAN TAKE CARE OF THE PAYMENT HERE, just bring a debit card) I made the mistake of getting a cashier's check, which the bank charged me $10 for, oh well. Came to get my 'first' passport. I had a previous passport that expired in '94. (Over 15 years old, issued before I was 16). Did tons of research, read all the instructions on the federal website, read all the Yelp reviews. I came with the following documentation: -My original expired passport -Pre-filled application from the website -Color copy of the front and back of my ID (and original) -Black and white copy of my birth certificate (and original) -Social Security Card (but they didn't ask for it) -Pre-filled check for the fee ($110 for standard (6-8 week processing), $170 for expedited (2-3 week processing), you can tack on an extra $15 for overnight shipping instead of standard 3-4 days) My advice is come with all the documentation you can, you'll have it all there should they need it. Better safe than sorry. I arrived at 7:15am on a Tuesday and took a number. There were 5 people were ahead of me. I got called just before 8am. Was done by 8:10. Agent was friendly and easy-going. Still unclear on when the office actually opens, I've read 7:30 in photos/reviews, but also read they sometimes open early. Yelp says office opens at 7. I think if you get there at 7 you should be positioned for a fairly reasonable wait. In general, painless experience if you're prepared. read more

I came in on June 22nd at around 6:45am for an expedited passport for my July 9 departure. They open the passport office at 7:30am and I was in and out in 15 minutes total- I was also the first one through the door. There is a line for the post office services which is roped off, but the passports are taken care of in a separate room on the right side of that floor. Be sure to stand in front of that door to establish that you're in line. The lady that came in after me felt she was at liberty to walk into the passport room before me, as soon as it opened, and took the first ticket- although she had walked into the building after me and was very well aware of it. I figured it was okay since I took the second ticket, but employees take their time trickling in, she didn't have any of her shit ready like I did, and I'm a working woman so I was on a tight schedule! After you're done in the passport office, you come back outside to the main post office line to pay for the delivery fees. Credit/debit cards accepted for this part. Both processes took the 15 minutes total. Definitely worth the wait and plenty of parking. Just do everyone a favor and have all documents ready! It should also be noted that they do not process the blue forms that need to be mailed in, which they provide on site, only the brown forms! But they don't inform you of this until after you've taken a number inside the passport office. I had a slight panic attack since mine was technically a renewal and I waited damn near an hour in line. However, it was all groovy, I brought in my old passport which expired in 2011 (issued before I was 15 so the brown form was okay to use), 1 original photo is all they need, my check for $185.45, and my license, which they make a copy of there. No need for birth certificate if they take your old passport for renewal. Stay informed! Happy travels!! read more

USPS - Bayview - Cafeteria Open to the public, the USPS cafeteria, Fresh and Natural Charlie's Cafe, is a hidden, affordable option in an overpriced San Francisco food market. It is also a great place to kill two hours while waiting for your passport renewal. :-/ This place used to be bustling with activity 15 years ago, but since the Postal Service downsized from about 7000 employees to perhaps 2,000, there is plenty of space for non-employees to enjoy a meal or drink. Even the food is not "San-Francisco-Fresh"it is reasonably tasty (frozen burgers, pre- made burritos, and plenty of vending machines) as well as cheap and fast. The French Fries are actually pretty good for less than $2. The only items that seem to be "SF expensive" are the drinks, but they probably are their biggest sellers because of convenience for employees. (24 oz Pepsi is $1.95, small coffee is $1.75) The space is actually very roomy and well-lit, with an large outdoor patio right outside the huge windows. There is even a TV and microwave in the common area. To find the place is almost impossible to find unless you know where to look. (NOTE: A sign indicating that there is even a cafeteria within the Post Office would be a good start, since there is plenty of foot traffic from the general public.) LOCATING THE CAFETERIA: Basically, instead of entering the Main post office entrance in the front of the building, travel down the long outdoor cobblestone walkway, which runs to the LEFT of it." When you reach the end of the path, on your Right, you will enter through a set of glass doors. You will have passed the blue outdoor patio tables. Once inside the glass doors, take an immediate right into the cafeteria entrance. It is immediately before a slightly intimidating security station. You do not need to pass through security to enter the cafeteria. FINDING THE GRILL: To find the grill / food preparation area, you must walk to the back, past vending machines and tables. It is tucked/hidden behind a separating wall on your left-hand side. You would not know it was there unless you looked. Although the rest of the place is self-serve, this part of the place has been managed by an older Asian couple, Young and Charlie, for the past 11 years. Although at first they come across as skeptical/reserved to outsiders, (likely due to the depressing downturn in business), they become friendlier when you break the ice. Perhaps their mood would improve if business was better. The Cafeteria is open from probably 8am to 4pm. (Same as Post Office) read more

The only post office that does walk in passport applications for expedited and regular completion times. Great and prompt customer service from postal employees especially to Nelson, who goes beyond his ability to gel their own kababayans. He is helpful and informative, especially mentions about having both the passport book and the passport card. He says having the passport card is having a secondary ID when travelling out of state travels when your CA ID or DL hasn't been updated last February 2017. The only passport center that accepts applications for acquiring 1st time passport applications. First come and first serve basis. Be there before 8am, if you can. read more

San Francisco city requires face coverings inside businesses but USPS recommends but does not require a face covering; customers don't wear mask at Post Office not safe. I will ship FedEx or UPS as they require. Post office on Evans is not safe. I had to wait in line while a customer spent 10 minutes without a mask talking to the poor postal worker and possibly spreading infection to others in line. Shameful read more

These ladies at this office are the nicest and personable people I've ever met! They allowed me to come during COVID desperately looking to get my passport and they helped me thru the process! I did a walk-in appointment to renew my passport on a Thursday morning around 9:30am. There was no line and the process was fast and easy. The facility was clean, safe and there was lots of parking. You have to pay for your passport with a check or money order. You can also get photos taken there for the passport, which you can pay for with a credit card, cash or check. read more

This is about mail handling via this post office not the front counter. Lately I have had problems with my mail due to this post office 94188 as advised by postal tracking. We all more or less get our mail through this portal in San Francisco where it is sent on to other locations or branch post offices in other SF zip codes. I mailed a package downtown with tracking last week, it only was going to Richmond across the bay. It should have arrived in a day or two as it was a click and ship label printed at home via the web, with correct address bar codes and carrier route as per postal regulations. The guy I sold the item to did not get it, so I checkled tracking the 94188 sorting staff had sent this package to Missouri not to Richmond which added three days to the shipping time. There was no reason for this. On my incoming mail I have had several packages routed to 94188 on their way to my home or office only to find they did not arrive as expected because some clown there sent them to the wrong local post station not mine in either case. I found for some reason if the packages goes to the wrong station it takes three days to correct itself due to the way they handle the mail. Having five packages with similar problems via 94188 in this quarter of 2014 speaks volumes of how freaking clulless these people are. They are so bad they should be transfered to San Francisco City Government which is the only organization which is worse. If your mail is slow or late the above is probably why... read more
