I would love to rate this USPS location higher, unfortunately they have a problem in maintaining their equipment. One of the several persistent problems is the USPS Dropbox that they manage inside of Fox Plaza foyer. The single Letters Mail drop box is wholly missing the catch basin. This deficiency plainly shows the person who might drop mail there that the location's single letter drop is completely insecure. However, directly next to the single letter drop is a mail bundle drop bin. The mail bundle drop location still has the bin underneath it to receive mail. And labels for the bin show days and times of the week that mail is collected. But that bin has a cover plate that is partially loose. This allows anyone with a slim enough arm to reach inside the bin and take mail that does not belong to them out of the USPS mailbox. I've seen no posted notifications on the USPS site about this mail drop being decommissioned and longer being an available USPS Dropbox location. And there are new posted notices on the location from the USPS either about any decommissioning. The remaining label on the bin with days and times for collection also signify that this location appears to be still active. The security guards in the foyer of Fox Plaza still think that it is an active USPS mail drop location. And they even indicated that mail drop is available for use. On the usps.com website, a search shows the USPS still considers this drop location named as "USPS COLLECTION BOX" at 1390 Market Street, San Francisco, California, 94102 to be active. I've lived in 6 states and this is the worst post office I've been to in my entire life, by a mile. Always tremendously busy and half the time can't accomplish what I need them to. The amount of time I've lost having to come here makes me tear up to think about. If you have a choice, go anywhere else, and if you don't have a choice, good chance this place won't be able to help you either. read more

I understand Postal workers don't always see the best side of people, but in the case of Leah, she spits out nothing but vinegar and thinks loudly arguing and talking smack is the way to treat customers. Went somewhere else because I don't need her lack of self-esteem in my world. When I attempted to speak with management at this location, they were never available. How convenient! You need to get your house in order USPS, otherwise you'll be as relevant Blockbuster. I don't think my negative review will change this location's attitude, but I'm writing this to advise others to go to Fed Ex or UPS down the street so you don't have to put up with misplaced anger. I don't usually write reviews but my experience was so awful I feel I don't have a choice. CHOOSE ANOTHER POST OFFICE IF YOU CAN. Waited over 50 minutes while only one guy worked the desk. Two older women in line had to sit on the ground because there were no chairs or even a crappy bench. When I finally got up there, the ONE employee didn't accept my university ID verification for my PO Box even though the website said it would work. He was not at all sympathetic to the fact that, again, I had waited over 50 minutes- I arrived at 1:58 and didn't leave until 2:55- only to leave empty handed. I cried out of anger and frustration outside the post office. I don't expect wait time to bend rules but I do expect some kind of customer service, or at least human sympathy. USPS needs to hire more people at this location. This was unacceptable. read more

They are notorious for overcharging and including extra services you don't need and when you ask them to remove it they respond by saying it's required or else you pay more. It's a post office, not a luxury resort. Adjust your expectations accordingly. I've been here several times. When I lived in the TL, the nearest post office was on Golden Gate and was basically a hub for human feces and crack addicts, which isn't much of a surprise, but that post office doesn't sell postage. What? The lady said that I had to have prepaid postage. There is another post office in the basement of the court house, but that requires going through a metal detector, and there is still a line at times. So, out of those three, this one wins. There is an automated postage machine (which will not print you a stamp worth less than $1, by the way) that is rarely occupied, but there is usually a long line to mail something out at the counter. I came in last Thursday to send a package and there was no line at all. Strange. I asked the employees about it and they told me that Thursdays and rainy days are the least busy. It was a rainy Thursday morning. Just something to keep in mind in case you're nearby with a package to mail on a Thursday or rainy day. read more

This is a really bad post office. Its only redeeming quality is that is has an APC, so if all you need to do is buy stamps or mail a simple letter or package, you can do it without having to wait in line--usually. I often have to do other things, though, so I'm often stuck in this line. The people who work here aren't rude exactly, but they aren't nice either. They all have really unique personalities, and it's kind of interesting to watch while you're in line. The line can be ridiculously long, though. It should be open on Saturdays, but it isn't. UPDATE: 5/19/08 ============== So I'm dinging this post office another star because of my experience this afternoon. I paid with a debit card and asked for $50 cash back. When I asked (direct quote), "May I have two twenties and ten ones?" the postal lady said (direct quote), "You'll get what you've got coming to you." This USPS is horrible. It's on Market yet during lunchtime they only have 1.5 workers there to get your packages and envelopes paid for to ship. When I say 1.5 this is what I mean: 1 man was there to post whatever you had whilst another woman was doing "Money Orders or Stamp Purchases Only" yet if there was no one needing either of those things then she would also take the next person with a package in line. I wish I could compare this to post offices around the city but this is the one closest to my house, and I've had to go three times in the past month. NOTE: PO Boxes open at 7:30 but the customer service window doesn't open until 9! Meh, this is not the best post office I've been to. There is typically a rather long line, with 5-10 people at all times. There are usually only two staff members at the desk helping people, and the two I've interacted with have been unpleasant at best and rude at worst. There was also another person restocking some items in the lobby area and they were yelling at people in line. As for why I'm giving this two stars, I've had two galvanizing incidents in the few times I've been in. Firstly, I went in to drop off two packages (I'm told to just leave them on the counter in the drop-off area) so I go in and drop them off. Checking the tracking 3 days later, only one of them has been updated past the "printed shipping label" phase, leading me to believe that they never scanned in the second package I brought, even though it was right next to the first one. I've tried calling them each day since I dropped it off, but the location-specific phone number (415-931-1053) has never been picked up once in the dozens of times I've called. As for the general phone number for USPS (800-275-8777) there are so many menus to go through and the operator is terrible at understanding, so I could never get through to a person. Once I finally did, the wait was over an hour. The second incident involves going in to get some flat rate padded envelopes, which used to be in the flat rate kiosk but have since moved behind the desk, or so the staff member at another post office has told me. With this in mind, I waited in line and when it was my turn, I asked for two flat rate padded envelopes. I had a couple small flat rate boxes in my hand already and I was yelled at by the attendant, who said "Tell me why you need so many boxes." This caught me off guard but I said that I ship a number of small items to customers. I was then told that the staff member wouldn't give me any flat rate envelopes and that I should order them online, a process which typically takes 2+ weeks. I said I needed to ship stuff today but was rejected. Through these two negative experiences, I would suggest staying away from this particular Post Office. Nothing I've seen so far has been worth going. read more

Just to buy a box, and ship out a simple package was like filing out a fucking small business application. They charge you for everything. Even for the 24 inches of tape I used to seal my box. My girlfriend had a very frustrating experience at the Fox Plaza post office after work today. She arrived 10 minutes before closing, quickly finished filling out her customs form for her one small package, and was the only person in line by a little after 5:20 when the clerk abruptly closed her window and announced she was going home. My girlfriend protested that it wasn't even 5:30 yet and that she needed to mail her package right away, but the woman refused. The other two clerks were both helping the only other customer, a man with 6 big boxes, and then at 5:30 they shut down their windows when he still had 2 boxes to go, telling him to bring his last 2 heavy boxes back some other time. He and my girlfriend were extremely frustrated that the clerks wouldn't even finish up with the only two remaining customers, but their protests were ignored, and they were ushered out the door with their unmailed packages. This clerk and one other are no doubt the same ones that have been repeatedly complained about on Yelp. Why doesn't the USPS reprimand these rude clerks, even if they can't fire them? There's no excuse for a governmental service treating the public this way. read more

This is the closest post office to me. It is also incredibly slow. The line is always super long, and what makes it infuriating is that you have to stand there and watch the inefficiency and rudeness at work. The first time I ever went I waited in the line before only to be brusquely told to go use the machine on the other side to mail my small package, which I had not known was there at the time. That would have been helpful to know while I waited in line. I've seen this happen to others as well. If there is a line, there is no way to ask anyone a question as to what you can mail from the automatic machine (debit/credit only), or where forms are. There is a sign next to the counter that says not to interrupt transactions, so you are forced to wait in line. The last time I was there, the line was around 20 deep, with only two attendants working. I'd give this place one star, but had a great conversation while waiting over half an hour to buy a few international postcard stamps (98 cents fyi). The second star is for that machine in the corner. As long as you always bring a debit/credit, it can be tolerable. read more

First of all, having post offices that close at 5PM doesn't give us 8-5 workers much choice but to sacrifice some of the lunch time to visit the holy grail of post office to run our errands. Not to mention the long walks and long lines, competing with the rest of the neighborhood to see who gets to send out their mail first. Jesus, is anyone else wondering WTF is happening to the US postal system? I know there is a push towards privatizing the mail system and I guess that the 'powers that be' are letting the federal system rot. I feel sorry for the staff of Fox Plaza - It's understaffed and Fox Plaza is a product of its neighborhood - the Tenderloin. These overwhelmed postal workers have to deal with huge lines, understaffed counters and whatever comes through the door from the Tenderloin/ Civic Center area. The staff is quite lovely given the environment they have to work in. Every time I go there, the staff has to try to upsell you. You can't just mail a letter today. It has to be certified, sent overnight, insured and blessed by the hand of God to make certain it arrives at it's destination. If you don't purchase these add-ons and they make it seem like they burn your letters as well as hundreds of others at the end of the day. And while they are at it, the staff tries to sell you post cards, greeting cards, tape, boxes and other assorted brick-a-brack. I wouldn't be shocked if bootleg movies started showing up at post offices. Maybe they can get postal workers to start selling stuff out the trunks of their cars. This isn't just the Fox Plaza Station, I've noticed this at postal stations across the country. They are turning postal employees into sales clerks to keep the beleaguered US postal system going. The once solidly middle class job of being a postal worker is being badly degraded. I feel sorry for these people who entered the system to make a living for themselves and their families and have been reduced to hocking wears. Go to Fox Plaza Station if you got some time to burn and don't mind the 'characters' that regularly come through the door. read more

This review is based on my various experiences here. For the most part, this has been a decent post office. The only thing is the lines can get pretty long, and it may take awhile to get to the front. There's a lot of self service items so if you already have your packages ready to go, you can definitely do a lot of these things yourself. However, I must say, I have had one experience that stands out. I have always been able to get confirmation for padded envelopes throughout my years shipping. However, one time, the employee said I cannot because it is not thick enough. I communicated in a very soft tone, that I was always able to get confirmation on these. She then flipped out, basically flicked my envelopes and documents back to me and goes to say, "since you always were able to do it, why don't you fill these out". Completely unprofessional, and I just said thank you, walked out and went to another post office. Honestly, I understand it can be hard sometimes because we all have our bad days, but it was certainly uncalled for flicking the items back to me. Since then, I only come here if I need to. I'm still buying money orders here, (every 1st of the month).. and this month's trip.. was by far one of the worst lines, I've seen since they relocated (to their new location in the lobby area). I'm glad I gave myself an extra hour - to get to my Property Management company, (to pay my rent) this month; otherwise I'd have missed their closing time, (and my rent would've been late) this month. The PO Boxes for Fox Plaza Station are on Hyde and Golden Gate. The service there is the same as the service at Fox Plaza -- execrable. The number of missing checks and missing packages is beyond belief. I even did a trace on a missing check, and they said there was no sign of it. Three months later, someone accidentally "found" it. It had been in the station the entire time! There has been no sign of my missing packages, however. Why does Post Office management continue to negotiate contracts with the Postal union that does not allow management to fire "workers" who refuse to work? Now, the Post Office needs more money. Do come here if you just have something to drop off. Don't come here in a hurry. Do come here if you have excessive amounts of time to spare. Don't come here if you don't identify as being patient. Do acknowledge that they are recipients for customer service awards. Don't expect to become a customer unless you can actually make it to the counter. For being in such a prime and busy location, they are horribly understaffed. They deal as best they can while dealing with inpatient people all day long. It makes for a rather dreary experience. Coming here makes me want to gouge my eyes out. Going to the post office is like going to the dentist for a cavity: you don't want to go, but you have to, for the odd-thing that you can't do online. It's like going to the dentist, but with more incompetent people, and will probably take as long as getting a cavity filled. I wish they had a separate line for people who were going to only pay in cash -- or who are going to count all the spare change they have for whatever they are paying for. Or for the person who wants to buy 100 stamps and wants to look at all the holiday vs. non-holiday options. (This actually happened when I was in line today) PRO TIP: Buy your stamps online! I also don't know why they have 2 people working, 5 counters, and then one lady asking everyone in line if they are going to pay with a credit card and asking if they can use the Priority Mail automated machine. In my head: "No lady, I'm waiting in line because what I need can't be accomplished with the automated priority mail machine." They should just have her working behind the counter helping people instead of asking everyone in line if they need help. The only thing that would be helpful is if she helped customers and shortened the queue. As if having only 2 people working at a time is bad enough, they are slow as molasses. It's like they are in a competition to see who can be slower than the other. I was mailing things media mail - I told her I was mailing a book, and she proceeds to ask if I have anything liquid or fragile, like perfume. Unless my book was made of perfume, the answer is no. I tell her again, slowly, "I am mailing a book, one book", and she proceeds to ask me if I am mailing anything toxic. Sigh. I wish they wouldn't ask such asinine questions - it would speed up the line if they didn't waste a minute asking dumb questions. If you do have to come here, bring your best patience, expect to wait 20-30 min, and bring a book to read while you wait. Don't come if you are in a hurry. I'd try to do whatever you need to do online or somewhere else if possible. read more

I have tried to be understanding about this operation. But the level of service is abysmal And I have had a number of parcels "disappear" One employee, in particular, refused to give me my parcel.because I didnt have a yellow card that they put in boxes. I never saw that parcel.again even though they marked it as delivered. Luckily the vendor just replaced it, but this is indicative of a theft operation. I managed to get a supervisor, who said she didn't believe an employee would do that and promised to look into it. Never heard back. Today, I got a mailer which was opened and empty. Again I have to find out what this was and go thru the misery of trying to resolve this. There is obviously no managerial.oversight and no internal controls that prevent theft Additionally, they recently stopped saturday hours with out bothering to inform.box holders. So my saturday trip was a waste. I also have a more valuable parcel that was marked delivered last.week and I have not yet seen it. Now I have to go to the vendor and waste more time. Based on my first visit, only 2 people staffed at noon ask when consumers are most likely to visit when on their lunch hour. Also, while the agents are friendly they are way too chatty with customers. I overheard one making casual conversation, giving directions, etc when it's really not the time. Lots of rude regulars in line as well and you can expect to be interrupted at the counter. Understandable given the broken system that is in place with the USPS.
