There has to be a better way for a name change. I recently went to the SS office to get a replacement card with my married name when I had a free afternoon. I arrived around 12:15pm, and the place was packed. I am guessing a lot of people try to go on their lunch breaks. First off, the parking lot is a nightmare, and did not have enough parking to accommodate the number of people that visit this place. I was able to parallel park to the side. When I walked in, there were so many people. They have kiosks to check in and get a number. I was Z364. When I looked at the screen, they were on Z250. What???? There was also a loudspeaker where you could hear a muffled voice calling numbers if you were lucky enough to hear it. I followed the signs to the social security card area, and that room was packed too! I left to get lunch. When I came back they had made it to Z290. What? Then there was a turn of events. There was a lady who came out and started calling people in increments of 10. I guess a lot of people get tired and leave at that point in the day. It was around 1:45. Everything moved quickly. The lady who helped me was friendly and efficient, and in about 5 minutes, I was on my way....to the DMV, but that is another story. 2 stars for service, but they should allow you to check in ahead of time online so that you don't have to wait so long. read more

"Oh, you're going to the social security office? Tell me how you hate your life." That was the response I got from EVERYONE when I mentioned I had to trek my ass out to order a replacement card. But this place is maybe the cleanest, nicest, best staffed government agency I have EVER been to. I was pretty terrified when I printed out my number (which was in the 70s) and realized they were only in the teens. I glanced wistfully at my phone, and shed a silent tear that I only had 20% left, and wondered what the hell I was going to do without Ninja Fishing for the next 17 hours I would be stuck there. Then, a highly efficient guy with a walkie talkie came in and started rattling off numbers like an auctioneer, sending people this way and that, and even smiling and cracking jokes. Wait, you don't hate your job? You're not hellbent on making everyone stuck in this room wish they were on the business end of a shotgun? Am I in the twilight zone? I arrived at 1:15pm, and was out the door with a smile on my face and a spring in my step by 1:40 flat. I don't know what the do here, but whatever it is, let's share it with the DPS. What can one say about a Social Security office? The place didn't smell of dead bodies. The carpet seemed clean enough. There were clear signs pointing everyone to the right direction. The security guards did a great job at securing. They had two holding pens for us humans which was nice. This must be what "free range" chickens feel like. I went there to get my name changed and my birthday changed since apparently, I have been 10 days older than I actually am in the federal government's eyes. Talk about premature aging. We got our number. We waited. We heard babies cry and watched as one helpless ssa staffer made the mistake of stepping out into the floor, open to be swarmed by jittery, anxious, ss card seekers. Those people will do anything for a card. Our number was called. We had an Asian lady who quickly worked on all of our changes and just like that, we were out the door and into our car in just under an hour. Thank you for a great time, SSA. I had a great experience. I went in around 12:15 p.m. on a Friday. I signed in (to change my name since I recently got married) and waited about ten minutes before I was called back. In and out in half an hour. Just make sure you are prepared with everything you need and its a painless experience. I get everyone has crappy experiences every once in a while, but the woman who helped me was very sweet and took her him to make sure everything was correct. I appreciated the system and would go back anytime. Its just a fact of life and "suffering" for half an hour is worth having a new last name! read more

Just got married. Came for a name change. Waited 30mins. Once I was called it no more than 10 mins. Customer service was great! I wish I had ask for the persons name that helped me. He was great! Everyone was so kind there. I recommend this place 100%! read more

I wanted to get my name changed after getting married. I arrived at the Social Security Administration at 8:45 on Wednesday morning. There were already about 50 people in line and I thought it would take hours. I walked out of there at 9:05 after getting my name changed (I had the proper form filled out already and I had the required documents in hand)! Painless experience! I got married a few weeks ago and was dreading having to go to the Social Security Office to get my name changed. I read review after review....I asked friends and co-workers where I should go...to try to find the office and path of least resistance...and against all advice I went to this SSA office off Hwy 75 in Dallas. I recently got married and was dreading name change process. This SSA office was my first stop in the process and the experience was awesome. I arrived 20 minutes before they opened and immediately saw 2 lines of people already formed outside of the building. I went to the left line and realized I was in the wrong line about 10 min later (go to the right if you need a name change). Right at 9 they opened the doors and lead us to the SS card room. A nice employee was giving us our ticket numbers. I was about 15th in line and waited for about 5 minutes before my number was called. I left at 9:13. My experience at this Social Security would have an unmitigated nightmare without the 2 security guards that worked there, they were so pleasant and helpful. The process of getting a number and being served was so confusing, but the guards were answering questions for everyone. Hats off to these wonderful gentlemen. The social security employee I dealt with, trying to get advice for my mentally ill sister, was the definition of unhelpful, if she said it once, she said it a 30 times, "go online". I went there for help because my sister's situation is complex, and it was a pure waste of my morning , and the room was so cold, everyone was shivering. I heard all the horror stories. Everyone said get there early because there's always a line well doors open at nine and I was there at 7:30 lucky for me there was very little people five ahead of me. By 810 the line had formed into the parking lot. what everyone should know is that they form two lines one for benefits and one for replacement cards or new SS cards it makes it easier. I was there to get a replacement Social Security card so once the doors open at 9:00 and we were guided to the area we should be in I was out by 9:07 with my receipt for a replacement. read more

So far, my experiences with SSA have been abysmal, both in terms of online application and in-person visits to a local office. I had problems with applying online because I kept getting stuck with this one question about a childhood friend. At 68, I can name a lot of childhood friends, butfor some reason, none of the people I named were the right answer. I got frustrated and decided to go in person to an office. I got a ticket and waited more than an hour for to be told I needed to make an appointment which will be no later than June 19th and I will have to take yet another day off from work. The office opens at 9 am but when I got there at 8:22 there was a long line! I only had to get a new card after getting married. After they opened the doors and have me a ticket, I was out of there at 9:09!!! I can't speak to the wait times of you're there for anything other than a replacement card but I am really happy with this office's efficiency today. read more

I guess this is expected at a Social security office but my experience here was horrific. I got in around 11:00 and out around 12:30 not too bad. However when they call your number on the intercom it's so difficult to hear some of the staff members who have heavy accents or who may be soft spoken. My number was called but I heard Window L so I went to that window and the lady at the window with the rudest tone tells me "I didn't call you" and so I went to another window asking did someone call Z154 and she tells me you will be window O and when I get there the doors are shut and no one is there. It was ridiculous but luckily one of the nicer staff member helps me out and took care of me. If it wasn't for that one staff member I'm terrified to think that I could have sat around for another hour and a half for my new number to be called. I hope that I never have to come here again. read more

What a freaking nightmare! They open at 9am. I got there at 8:30 thinking I would be the first person there! HA! There were over 600 people lined outside around the building. They take forever, it's always noisy therefore you can't hear them over the intercom, it's freezing cold, the seats are ridiculously uncomfortable, and there's never anywhere to park... They should look into building a bigger more efficient running office in the near future! read more

Trying to get a new SS card. It didn't really take that long if you consider a single trip in and of itself. Maybe an hour. But given that the woman in the window who hates her life and anyone in it could not be bothered to actually listen to me either time that I've told her repeatedly that I have attempted to update my address, my new card has apparently been sent to God knows where and I have to go back for a THIRD TIME now. I get that mistakes happen, truly, but honestly, this woman has talked over me, snapped at me, and then asked if I was going to "let her finish trying to do her job" the entire time I have attempted to explain my situation. I barely got two words in edgewise. Be sure not to get upset in any visible way or she will point to the sign on the wall letting you know it is a violation of law to "abuse" the clerk. Wow. Okay, I wouldn't dare but fine. I won't cry here lady, you win. I love being patronized and gaslit by holier than thou Government Workers. If you get the woman who wears a black cardigan with (a totally apropos) spider embroidered on the front, be ready to die inside. I know that job has to suck, but come on - let's both get on with our lives here, lady. read more

Considering The amount of time I had to wait, an hour and a half, and without an appointment, my experience was excellent. The man who helped us, Mr. J. Cardona, was very helpful, professional, and pleasant. He answered all of my questions as well as those of my spouse.
