I will unabashedly profess that Uwajimaya is a spiritual place for me. My first memories of Uwajimaya are from my childhood. It felt like an epic journey when my family and I would drive two hours from Concrete to Seattle. My grandmother relied on Uwajimaya for a great deal of her cooking. Much like how she spoke, her style of cuisine was a mix of her Okinawan roots and her new American life. She and my aunt would load multiple grocery carts at a time, reading labels to me and explaining the ingredients within. Every trip we managed to miraculously squeeze their loot into the Four Runner. It was not uncommon for me to share my seat with a bag of rice for the trek home. Being part of the day-long experience of Uwajimaya as a child made my meals taste that much more delicious at home. Many years and moves later, my partner and I found ourselves living in North Everett last year. He was commuting to Bellevue for work and we quickly discovered the Uwajimaya--conveniently located next door to Total Wine. I hadn't visited the Seattle store in years and I'd never been to the Bellevue location, but I was convinced my memory served me well. At first, I roped him into visiting out of nostalgia. As soon as we walked in, we knew it would become a regular spot. We were in the very early stages of rolling our own sushi at that time. We had only experimented with the frozen tuna and salmon from Whole Foods, but the visit to Uwajimaya seriously upped our game. They offer several kinds of sashimi-grade fish, octopus, scallops and more. They had every possible kind of seaweed, furikake, tools, rice and miso fixings we could desire. They even have an excellent beer and wine selection for our sake-bomb needs (which is mandatory for our Saturday sushi nights). Uwajimaya is a gem. Not every part of the country has such fantastic resources for Asian cuisine. As recent transplants to the South, my partner and I miss it every time we have a craving for sushi (which is at least weekly). I have also been to H Mart in other states and I'm aware there's one in Lynnwood, but Uwajimaya will always have a special place in my heart. It was my first Asian market. It was where I fell in love with cooking. And it was one of the first places I truly appreciated my family's ties to Okinawa and Japanese cuisine. read more

This location is so much better than the one in Renton. I find that it's laid out perfectly and very easy to find what you need. All the sections are grouped together with like products. The store is quite clean and has no definable stench like most Asian stores. There are also ample parking stalls but the spaces aren't very wide. I can't complain as I just park further away where it's more open and does not have many cars. The vegetables are fresh and so are the meats and seafood. There is also a hot and fresh food counter. I can't comment on that since I have never purchased any hot food items. I would have given this place 5 stars but their prices seem to be unusually higher. That still won't stop me from shopping here. I also enjoy that Ellenos Greek Yogurt has a location inside the store. My fave! read more

Our whole family has been loyal customers at Uwajimaya for the past 20 years since we moved to Seattle. We shopped there on weekly basis for its high quality at higher price compared with the rest of stores in China Town. I would say the experiences were positive and pleasant till our first return of the cracked cooking pot bought less than 3 weeks ago. The store manger and the cashier made the return harder than it should be, especially during this pandemic time. They do not care if you are loyal customers. Farewell Uwajimaya! read more

Cool! I finally popped in to see the Eastside Uwaji. I actually like this one more than the Seattle location! It feels brighter, cleaner, and better organized. Unlike the Seattle location though, there aren't a lot of other shipping options. No bookstore attached, and the home goods section is a fraction of the size of the one in Seattle. But what I loved here was the deli section and the tremendous amount of take-home, ready to eat items. I'm not sure if it was where everything was located or how the store was laid out, but the Seattle Uwaji doesn't seem to be quite this extensive in this regard. Nevertheless, I love both locations and can never walk out without a treat or two. Oh! And produce is always great at both locations. Excellent Chinese grocery store on the eastside. Produce are always fresh, large selection of items, located near downtown with easy access and a big parking lot. I love coming here to purchase meat and seafood because they are fresh and reasonably priced. The produce can cost a little bit more than say Asian Family Market, but is usually of better quality. read more

I've spent quite a bit of time at this store recently, and I like it. Really like it. Why? - They accept AmEx. Not a HUGE reason to like them, but one day I forgot my debit card at home and only had my AmEx, and I was very happy that they accepted it (because I was hungry). - The hot & sour soup in the hot food area is pretty good. A big cup is about $3. - The single red bean "cakes" or whatever that are next to the hot food section. So good. I usually get the green one. I guess they could be mochi, but... I'm not sure. Either way, they're wonder little treats. - The sushi is alright. I think it's improved because they seemed to have more "previously frozen" fish before (that tasted like nothing). When I'm craving sushi/seafood here, I usually get some sashimi or uni from the fish section on the other side of the store. The package of uni is about $16 and delicious. Haven't really explored many other areas in this store, but now you know about some of my favorite things... :) read more

I love Uwajimaya. They have a ton of Asian groceries (not just Japanese goods) at reasonable prices. I like their selection of frozen desserts especially. I could just browse it all day. They also have lots of snacks like Pocky, etc. They did have some fruit flies on their fruit though. I've never really bought much produce at Uwajimaya, mostly dry snacks, so I can't comment too much on the produce. read more

Very nice Asian supermarket. For more Korean/Japanese, this is better than Ranch 99. However, Ranch 99 (at least the ones in California) have way more selection in their hot bar/dim sum selection. We often ate lunch/dinner at our local Ranch 99. The selection of fish here is also smaller. However, the quality seems a whole lot better and it is far better labeled with where the fish comes from. We like that as we try to buy sustainable fish. Prices seem a little expensive but that may be the area. Great selection of sushi/sashimi/poke etc. The soy sauce aisle is ridiculous. This is a big store and has the product variety to match. Decent prices on some produce as well although I didn't check it out too much. Good location off of the 405. More compact than Seattle's location and seems to have less variety--deli is much smaller. Also, no book store. Produce is about the same quality as the Seattle location as well--and not many items are on "sale". Parking nice because you aren't forced to buy something in order to park for free. read more

Bellevue, I am so jealous right now because this Uwajimaya is fantastic!! I don't go out to the east side very often for reasons unknown but I found my way towards there to check out the Peaks. Call me picky, because I certainly can be, but I buy my hair dye from Uwajimaya. Why? They carry the Japanese brand that I like at a reasonable price (definitely better than $30 on the net). Hence why I stopped by this location before hitting up Peaks. The selection on hair dye and styling products only, blew me away. Literally, I was so ecstatic I almost jumped for joy. Maybe I actually did.. After staring aimlessly in that section, I decided to browse the rest of the store. So clean and bright and organized and filled with many different selections! I found quite a few items I never see at the other locations which is neat because I hate going around various stores to get what I need. I didn't come out with anything else since I didn't really need anything but I definitely will go back to shop here soon. Parking, selection, cleanliness were on point. Not a bad grocery store. You can find a lot of Asian fruits and vegetables, as well as sauces and snack items. The parking lot is pretty much a nightmare though. The spots are so tiny for compact cars. I parked in a really tight spot and had to squeeze my way out of the car door. The shopping carts are pretty new and clean. Inside the store, everything was really organized and clean too. Don't get fooled by their deli section. I saw chicken katsu and got $6 worth. It was really un-flavorful and kind of pricy. I was so hungry that I sat in the car and ate a bite of the katsu and it had really no taste at all. It was so not good and there was a thick lawyer of the breading. I don't know if their other food items are good though. The people there were really helpful. I needed help finding a particular item and the grocer walked me over to where it was at. The food is a little on the pricier side but there is an awesome deal in the Chinook Book where it is $10 off of $50. They also offer you a free grocery bag that has a cute design if you use your Chinook Book coupon. read more

I usually go to the Uwajimaya in Renton, but this location is so much better! The freshness and selection of produce (and items in general) beats the Renton location, although it's still second to the International District location in my opinion. This location feels more cramped because all of the aisles and shelves are much closer together compared to the Renton location, so make sure you're wearing tennis shoes when you come to shop. The older Asian adults running through with their shopping carts are aggressive AF and don't care about your toes if you're in the way of whatever section they're trying to get to. I was really disappointed that they no longer sell Ellenos yogurt at this location, since that is a staple grocery item for me. read more

I was very excited when I heard that Uwajimaya Bellevue is going to take over the old Larry's Market location. I was extremely disappointed that they only less than 1/2 of old Larry's Market. The old store had started to look like one of those aging stars that you used to see on talk shows. There was still something there but it had gotten so run down it was hard to remember it's past glory. The new location is like when one of those old stars gets a new series and a makeover. Now she's ready for her closeup. It's spiffy, clean, huge and finally adequately staffed. No more having to wait for the same two slow checkers. They've added lots more take out options like bigger bento plates, more pre-made sushi, and even roast meats. The only sort of strange thing I encountered was that I generally go in around 11:30 to get food and virtually everything I've gotten out of the refrigerator cases so far has been partly frozen. Compared to all the other Asian food stores in the area, Uwajimaya is definitely my favorite! They usually have events throughout the year, and we've been to a few of them: Labor Day Weekend BBQ and the Chinese New Year Dragon Dance Celebration. This market is big, clean, well-stocked, smells good, has a food court with hot food and an area for "stuff" like bath goodies, toys, plates, cards, kitchen accessories et. al. Pretty much every "Asian" type of food or ingredient can be found here and the store itself is organized fairly well. You can also find cooking basics like flour and such as well as some "non-Asian" food items (I think I recall seeing pasta here one time). There is a huge aisle of candy -- one time I made a special trip out here because I read that Hi-Chew grape flavor is supposed to taste just like a candy from my childhood (Bonkers) and I HAD to check that out! (It is definitely similar - not exact - but it scratched that itch!) The people working here have always seemed friendly and pleasant. The produce, meat and seafood always seem fresh too. We even located a specialty meat section that has chorizo and European meats (bierwurst, etc.) in the back. All in all, I really recommend this store if you're looking for specialty items and even those "regular" items too. It'd be a great spot to stop in for a quick lunch too... or a snack of a delicious pork bun even! Yum! read more

I walked in today for grocery shopping and noticed something very familiar: it was a cartoonish drawing of miso ramen. It took me a second but then I remembered where I saw that picture. TAKOHACHI!!!! Uwajimaya was now serving ramen and they had this fairly big ass sign outside of the store promoting that they have ramen(you can see it driving by...). My wife was very reluctant when I told her I wanted to try it. I went to order the kimchi ramen and my wife said she wanted the miso ramen. After I ordered, she was like.. why in the hell did you order two?! what if its bad and nasty?!?!? this went on for a while but I told her I'd eat her share and buy McDonald's if it was really that bad. A few minutes went by and we watch as they were preparing the ramen. Hummm. I was slightly afraid. I decided to look around the desert section to get my mind off of it. "Your order is ready..." I turned around and walked back to the counter. First thing I noticed was they didn't use disposable bowls! Score! I was happy when I heard Uwajimaya was opening near Downtown Bellevue, it is nice having an Asian market so close. This store is much more organized and clean than the other Asian markets I am used to visiting, but I still wish it were a little bit cleaner. The parking lot is decent sized and I never have an issue finding parking. I like the produce section, I always end up leaving with more than I came for. Some of the items are priced a bit higher than you will find at Safeway and QFC. There are isles and Isles of specialty Asian items, some of the novelty items are priced higher than I have seen elsewhere, likely because of the one stop shopping experience available. I have gone to this market a few times when I had recipes that called for ingredients that I am not familiar with and the staff at the store is happy to help out. There is a nice bakery, deli, a food court with hot food items, sushi, sandwiches, a large selection to pick up lunch or dinner. read more

I like Uwajimaya because they have good seafood, awesome steak at the butcher. Great dry aged prime. They have Iberico pork They have a hot food area that brings in droves of people. They have ok sushi but I prefer the sushi grade meat in the back. One of my favorite things at Uwajimaya is their local fresh shiitake mushrooms. They are the same price just locally grown here. They are a superior shiitake...did I mention how awesome the steak is? They have lots of hard to find items at regular grocery stores fish sauce, oyster sauce, all kinds of gems. read more

Finally got around to checking out the new Uwajimaya in Bellevue. It's in the old Larry's Market (which I still sometimes miss). It only takes up about 1/3 of the space and there is lots of space to grow (it's available for lease). The produce and meat/seafood sections are beautiful but pricey $$$$ - to much for me - double or triple what I would pay. We did buy quit a few sale items (they have some great sales - my favorite sake was 50% off!). It was to early for the hot food and sushi but did get a couple of buns that were ok. I think the product never moves at this store and so it's super old and gross. Other than that, they had the other items on my list (soba, lotus roots). Uwajimaya might intimidate some people, but really it is just a great store. I love cooking all kinds of food, and this store has those ingredients you may not find at your typical grocer. The produce here tends to be cheaper than most chains in the area (except for those really rare specialties like scorpion peppers). They even sell things like woks, rice cookers, fancy chopsticks, and other little knick-knacks. FINALLY! I have found a real Asian market. Fresh fish of all types are affordable. Thin sliced meat cuts for Shabu Shabu and hot pot cooking. I usually enjoy this Bellevue location with the exception of Christmas Shoppers who crowd the limited parking lot and drive without courtesy towards other drivers. We waited outside for 10 minutes, limiting the number of people in the store. Items were plentiful and the produce section looked great, better than the downtown Seattle Uwajimaya. Overall, a good place to shop except when Xmas is around the corner. read more

I LOVE THIS PLACE but it's not as good as the one in Seattle with the HUGE gift shop and bookstore. This location is a bit smaller but still have a decent amount of space for the gift shop. I love everything here. The atmosphere and the environment and the stuff they sell seems so fresh and nice, the price is great too, good return policy for Asian market. Gift shop is amazing. I could go there and sit there all day, I love it. And they have free gift wrapping if you purchase over $10 worth of gifts! I love pinks ice cream and this is the closest location to me. I just really like Uwajimaya... My asian heritage + Hawaii-born culture means that most of my cabinet and fridge has stuff from here... And since this place is in Bellevue, it's definitely the nicest location by far! Good selection, lots of parking, good customer service, clean aisles and fully stocked shelves! What's more to love? I was really missing Mitsuwa from southern California and also wanted some furikake that wasn't made in China. So I visited today for the first time and I was very pleased. There is a wide range of all kinds of foods (including a satisfying selection of furikake) and I was able to satisfy my cravings for Japanese snack foods and other goodies. The aisles are a bit cramped and social distancing isn't always possible, but when I was there the other customers were being very courteous as we tried to give each other space. I also very much appreciated the woman who checked me out on the self-checkout machine and was so patient with my clutziness! There is no doubt I'll be coming back. read more
