The lady who helped her do stretching was very thorough and showed her ways to help her do them on her own at home. PSA I believe we cut our timing close. I'm a surviving spouse. It always varies every year or so with Congress if we can be treated at the VA or not. I got to be treated here at the VA Long Beach. My office experiences were always positive. Appointments might take awhile to get and I always had to wait a bit in the waiting areas for my scheduled appointments, but the waits weren't ever too bad. It really is quite a sprawling campus and I would get lost when trying to locate a new-to-me clinic. When I would encounter staff, they were all helpful. PROTIP: The one area that actually went faster than outside of the VA was the Emergency Department. AKA The ER. Whatever service you're here for, bring your water bottle and a book. We are visiting from AZ and a problem came up with my husband. We arrived about 11 at night to the ER and received excellent care. One of the nicest group of nurses, doctors and support people. We were back in the hotel room before daylight and were kept informed all along the process. Visiting hospitals is never fun, but they certainly made it less painful! read more

Seems like a much improved VA Medical Center. They definitely have remodeled it since I came here 13 years ago. I'll be back for surgery in July. I did have lunch in the huge cafeteria that had an outdoor seating area. For all the xrays, blood work, and appointments I had that day, I never really waited long except for my initial appointment. Plenty of cell phone signal, so I kept myself busy and found an outlet to charge my phone. read more

I've been a patient at this VA medical center since I've left active duty. I have plenty of good things to say about this VA, and far better things than their counterpart in West LA. To start off, this facility is relatively new. It is obvious by both its architecture, and by how clean the facility is kept. There is just about anything that you can get seen for medically here. Most clinics are Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm, but you can get seen my a specialist on the weekend if need be by checking into the emergency department. That's open 24/7, and the processing time there is ok. The wait time in the ER depends on the staff that night. Sometimes the wait can be several hours, or it can be as little as half-an-hour, depending on the reason for checking in. I was seen in ophthalmology on a weekday afternoon, after experiencing something weird with my vision. The doctor who saw me was a resident from UCI, and he was a pretty nice guy. We talked a bit about why I was there, and also talked about the med school journey. Most docs in both VA medical centers know that I'm in the medical field myself, so we click very well. Thankfully, my vision is still at 20/10, with a minor reversible issue that has since cleared. On behalf of myself and my fellow vets, I thank the staff here for what they do for us vets. If you're a vet, and are in need of any medical attention, don't hesitate to come here if you're nearby Long Beach. read more

I messaged my primary care at the age of 41 about a lump formed on my right testicle and this was their response copied and pasted: "you can walkin this week between 1130 to 1230" Really? Not only do I lose a day of work just to get to this location, but you can't call to set up an appointment with me? You give me an hour lunch window to get someone to confirm I need a biopsy to make sure I don't have a cancerous tumor forming on my testicle? If they think it's urgent, why not let me walk in at 6am and salvage some of my work day? This healthcare is trash compared to what veterans deserve. read more

HORRIBLE! Wanted to go in to see my grandpa before he goes into surgery, but couldn't because "no kids are allowed under 18". Wtf kind of rule is that? I had my 10 year old sister with me. After; a few minutes past my sister asked to at least use the bathroom because we drove awhile to get to this hospital. They said "no" you must be 18... to use the fucking bathroom? you gotta be kidding me. Whoever supervised the lower nurse/security entrance should evaluate their decisions!! read more

I always come to this particular hospital because of the great services they provide mb. The hospital is clean and neat and constantly being upgraded. This makes for a challenging visit at times, but i know the hospital is making much needed upgrades. I get medical, dental, vision right there. They even have Psychologists and Psychiatrists there should they be needed. There are also numerous fellowship groups there. Also a Farmers Market and a great cafeteria. read more

This the best VA hospital I've been to and also by other veterans. They try to provide you with the best service as they can. There are some clinics that do lack basic compassion, however over all most of the people here are friendly. I'm sure other veterans will have strong opinion about this place, but my experience over all was good, not best, but good. This place was recently renamed after WW2 war hero who was placed in harms way but never gave up, the first Jewish medal of honor recipient who was denied of his honor until years later. I'm glad the honor him once more with naming this awesome facility after him. Hoorah! read more

My brother is a combat veteran. Went into the ER on Monday 12/5. Symptoms where nausea vomiting disorientation memory loss and mood swings. After sitting in a hallway bed for about 18 hours he was given a room. He had a CT scan that showed swelling in his brain. We were told that there could be possible brain damage and it might be permanent. They attempted to do 4 spinal taps with MRI all unsuccessful! Was promised sedation on the last and was given volume instead. After a week of being there and receiving zero preventative care or care what's so ever he left against medical advise. He did this because they planned to make him wait the entire weekend before treating him or attempting to treat again (spinal tap)! Tuesday 12/13 he was told his doctor had put in a referral for him to see a neurologist but did not sign it. The doctor would have to be paged to sign and then they could then schedule a consultation. When asked once all that had been done what would be the earliest appointment available, they said late in the new year! This is insane and unacceptable treatment for anyone let alone a combat vet. I don't think I need to rant on here about how sensitive the brain is irreplaceable it is. We need to do better by our vets! They deserve better. We are now sitting at Long Beach Memorial hoping to be helped. My brother is a family man this is not him. read more

Disorganized, bad bedside manner, inconsistent, inconsiderate staff. Operators are rude, especially if you already have a hearing disability. Front desk clerks are condescending. Parking is very limited. The hospital isn't at all outfitted to serve Veterans with disabilities. A management and administration overhaul seems to necessary. Better care can be found elsewhere. read more

Went to the July 4th 2018 event here and saw the Vets that gave all. I myself am a Marine Vet and it was moving being here among heroes. There was free food and hydration, raffles and games, great music and dancing, pinup girls and classic cars. Even an ice cream truck which was great in the heat! read more

Careless, inattentive. Could not be more upset about how much of our time they have wasted (not going into detail for sake of privacy).

I went there yesterday after two days of food poisoning and no one treated me for it all they wanted was to see if I had covid and send me in my way. The hospital it self is fine and the facilities are amazing but the employees need to work on their customer service skills and empathy. I had been stuck home and it took all my energy to get there. The covid testing sign sent me to one place but then they had me walk all over the grounds to find it. Then once inwas helped the lady gave me attitude cause I wasn't sure what was wrong with me. read more

This review is long over due and much needed. If you are ever assigned DENISE CURRY-EDMOND, Nurse Practitioner (NP) on "EAGLE TEAM" as your primary health care provider change it immediately! DENISE CURRY-EDMOND, is by far the worst healthcare professional I have ever dealt with. She has misdiagnosed illnesses (although minor illnesses still misdiagnosed) and major injuries on myself. In 2018 I had a injury causing me to go to the ER. The ER Physicians Assistant did his job and made sure I did not have any life threatening injuries and provided the care needed at that time. When I went to follow up with DENISE CURRY-EDMOND, I explained that I still had an extreme sharp pain in my shoulder and required additional testing. DENISE CURRY-EDMOND, lacked any and all bed side manner and said, "it's only in your head". DENISE CURRY-EDMOND, was more concerned about pushing meds and getting me out of her office. I did not want pain meds I wanted and needed to know the root of the problem. I continued to ask for additional testing (MRI) and she refused. The following day I came back during the "walk in" hours with hopes I would deal with a knowledgeable doctor. That did not happen, instead I had to deal with DENISE CURRY-EDMOND. That only turned in to another horrible experience, once again she refused to allow me any additional testing and attempted to rush me out of her office. I requested to speak with her supervisor and she refused. When she refused I informed her I was not leaving the office until I spoke with a knowledgeable Doctor (M.D). She once again refused to help and refused to investigate the root of my medical issue and called the VA Police on me. When the Officer arrive I explain the situation to him and his supervisor. Both officers were very understanding, tracked down a medical doctor for me and he evaluated my case. After speaking with a medical doctor for less than 15 minutes and him doing a very easy evaluation he knew I needed an MRI. Upon having an MRI done the same day it was revealed I had a 5 inch tear in my right shoulder. I was then referred to an orthopedic surgeon. All of my dealings with the orthopedic staff have been outstanding and I only have great things to say about them. read more

Love the Va they are always on top of things I have zero complaints everyone is always so helpful when you get here as soon as you walk in you are greeted and you are taken to where you need to go there's no way to be lost they see you on time there's never a long wait they follow up when they need a follow up. Just got out of an outpatient experience at the VA General Surgery clinic having three surgeries at one time. This is a smooth operating, well oiled machine, staffed by professional, compassionate, skilled people and I felt confident in my outcome. Every one from check in, my techs, my nurses, my anesthesia team, my surgeons, and recovery room team were absolutely ( and I know this word is overused) totally awesome. And I mean it. AND to top it off they know you haven't eaten since the night before and all of a sudden I'm getting very tasty chocolate ice cream, a blueberry muffin, apple juice and a roast beef sandwich! Thank you. This is not about diet, it's about calories for replenishment of energy sources and tissue regeneration. I'm a Navy trained Hospital Corpsman starting my medical career in 1971, attending to Medical Evacuation patients from the jungle of Vietnam at USNH Agana, Guam on the Orthopedic and Neurosurgery ward. I served on two Tin Cans, USS STERETT and USS MAHAN, and the LPH USS TRIPOLI having care over a few hundred crew members at a time. The people at the Long Beach VA Medical Center are the epicenter of total patient care, and I God Bless them for doing a very demanding job, and grabbing life by the ears and wrestling it into submission and making it do what needs to be done. Had Surgery here at June 10th 2019, the surgery failed, afterwards no follow up appointment, nothing in place to get it fixed, they left me in limbo. One of the worst experiences ever, going to see a male practice attorney tomorrow. read more

Don't use the VA urgent care if you need a pharmacy prescription. they will send you back to the hospital to get it filled and the VA pharmacy will tell you they can't under it you have to go back to your doctor and get the prescription rewritten. Total waste of time just go right to your doctor. read more

Unfortunately, I was a guest of the medical center for a week, when I fell, and fractured my hip. I am so thankful that I qualified to be treated here. It's not perfect, and they are limited by budgetary constraints, but it's amazing what is possible these days, when financial profit is not the main concern. The staff are mostly great--helpful, respectful, friendly, and skilled. The volunteers are unbelievable. What great attitudes. I had one guy who was 85 pushing my wheelchair. Staff and volunteers are well-trained. The whole attitude is that you would leave in better condition than when you arrived, no matter how long that takes. I've had other outpatient visits at this facility, and have always been treated well. The doctors take the time to ask good questions, listen well, and discuss options with you. They don't hesitate to seek a second opinion. If you feel strongly about something like a particular medication, you can accept or decline it, and you can discuss it with your medical team. I know that the earlier reputation of the VA was not good, but it seems to me that they have made a lot of basic changes, and they are all for the benefit of the qualifying veteran. I have no hesitations about returning to this facility in the future, except that it's a bit further from my home, than some other available facilities. I'm highly pleased with my treatment by the VA Medical Center of Long Beach. read more
