After almost 4 years of pure dental hell-so many oral surgeries, I've lost count. Over and over…read moredental implants and bone grafts that kept failing and getting infected. Tens of thousands of dollars spent. So much pain that I've cried in despair thinking it would never get better. The emotional and physical trauma of it all. I had no choice because over a lifetime of grinding my teeth so that all the nerves were painfully exposed (I couldn't even drink a sip of cold water without near screaming pain), I finally as of today have a successful full mouth of permanent dental implants that look beautiful. Tonight, for the first time in about 30 years, I ate a meal like a normal person WITHOUT pain! If you're ever considering dental implants, know that they aren't as simple as the marketing suggests. There can be complications though not always. Be prepared for what might not be so simple. All in all, despite the trauma, expense, and pain, I'm happy with the ultimate outcome. The first visit,…read morethey said i had cavities that needed filled...ok...so I got them filled the same day....and they weren't filled smoothly!! I had to come back to get the filling smoothed out because they left a ridge and it was bothering my mouth!! they also said i needed MI paste (for $30 from them when online it's ~$15)....ok...so i got that as well not knowing it was something I could get outside of the office I had to come back in for deep cleaning. When i got there however and went through the process, the "deep cleaning" didn't seem like a deep cleaning at all. The initial cleaning the first day seemed more thorough and hurt longer. They did all four quadrants in one session, no novicaine (which if you've had a deep cleaning before...it HURTS.....I needed the nitrous oxide the last time I had one.....and it hurt for multiple weeks after as well when I went before). One of my friends that also has had deep cleanings also said that they're painful and hurt for days afterwards. This one instead didn't hurt except when i was poked a few times, and i was fine to eat/etc right afterwards. While getting the deep cleaning the hygenist (because I never saw the dentist except for the fillings when in the past I saw them for deep cleanings as well) said that my mouth was much better and that she thought the pockets (the reason for the deep cleaning) were probably false pockets, that my mouth was much better than the previous month, that I probably didn't need the deep cleaning and that no antibiotic would be needed...maybe if I came in next time I would need them. So I got a deep cleaning that I may not have needed, didn't feel like a deep cleaning, and set me back $900....in about an hour (they also usually take longer) Poor experiences multiple times... oh--and never met Carl.

I knew ahead time that this visit would only be x-rays since it's been a while since I've had them done and it was in a different state. Eve was upbeat when asking me questions about my dental history and then we got to talking about my upcoming wedding. I felt very comfortable tasking with everyone that I saw today. After my screening and having photos taken of all my teeth (so cool to see) I was told that they could fit me in with a cleaning that same day. I know this isn't the norm but I was more than happy to not have to make a shirt follow up visit. As I was leaving after my cleaning, one of the receptionists noticed I didn't have an umbrella and it was getting ready to rain. She graciously asked if I wanted one because they had some extras! Such a thoughtful group of people who deserve the excellent reviews they currently have!

I'm leaving this review to document my experience at Atlas Dental Specialists (Shadyside) for two…read morefront-tooth crowns. While the office is professional on the surface, my experience overall was extremely frustrating and costly. After my permanent crowns were placed, I developed persistent sensitivity in my right front tooth (cold and hot) that did not improve over time. I also felt a noticeable ledge/step on the back side of the crown near the gumline, which made me concerned about the fit/contour. Aesthetically, the crowns also looked longer and bulkier than expected with heavier incisal edges than what I was aiming for. When I tried to address these concerns, I was advised to pay for additional diagnostics (a wax diagnostic). After I paid for it, the office later terminated the patient-provider relationship instead of completing the planned corrections. What made the situation especially difficult was the refund process: the office confirmed in writing the refund amounts, but repeatedly stated the refund would only be processed if I signed a broad "release/indemnification" agreement exactly as written. The agreement was extremely one-sided. It went far beyond acknowledging a refund and included sweeping waivers and protections for the office, along with a "non-disparagement/online statements" section that, in my view, would discourage patients from speaking openly online about their experience. I was not comfortable signing something like that just to receive an agreed refund. Overall, I'm deeply disappointed by how concerns were handled. The communication and resolution process felt dismissive and, at times, misleading - more focused on protecting the office than responsibly addressing the problem. My takeaway is that the approach felt money-driven, and I left feeling I couldn't trust the process. I would encourage anyone considering treatment here to do thorough due diligence and not rely solely on online ratings.

This man CARED about his patients!! If u had a question he would encourage u to call. He was there for his patients. He took the TIME he needed to make everyone feel COMFORTABLE. Comfortability is very big factor when it comes to dentistry. A lot of people have fears & r uncomfortable even walking in the door. So, making your patients feel comfortable is extremely important in this line of work. And Dr. Houy made u as comfortable as possible. Unfortunately Dr. Houy retired. So, I had to go w/ the other dentist. Dr. Gaga Sandu. At first I didn't get any bad vibes. Was he fast & tried to rush u out...YES! But, that was it (atp). Eventually, I had to get major dental surgery! Something that not only terrified me. But, I didn't know much about after care. I was supposed to get the surgery @ AGH & then return to Dr. Gaga Sandu after. Not only did Dr. Sandu cancel appointments w/o notifying me b4 showing up (prior to surgery). He also blatantly LIED TO ME, GASLIT me into thinking the hospitals ER offered something they didn't, & then when MISCOMMUNICATION was happening he refused to take ANY ACCOUNTABILITY & made me out to be some kinda incompetent fool!!!! I was able to get an Emergency appointment (no thanks to Dr. Sandu) & the HOSPITAL whom was ONLY SUPPOSED TO EXTRACT gave me an aftercare paper & told me to call my dentist for a follow up. Which...MADE SENSE! He is in fact my normal dentist that LITERALLY made a "plan" as far as my teeth & what needs done. So, almost a wk later they squeeze me in between appointments. This appointment was an "adjustment" & to make sure there was no infection. Which also....made sense considering it was a MAJOR DENTAL SURGERY & I needed to know the next step! I go in for my appointment & this "dentist" DR. Gaga SANDU says to me, "y r u here". I repeat what the appointment is for. ATP he is looking at me confused. Did NOTHING, told me NOTHING except "this was the hospitals responsibility but sometimes they're lazy & tell u go to the desntist". Like excuse me sir...U R THE DENTIST & this IS INFACT YOUR RESPONSIBILITY FOR AFTERCARE! Get this, I even had to ASK him how I'm even healing! lol!!!!! THIS GUY...DR. GAGA SANDU IS A JOKE!!!! And doesn't have a CARE in the world about his PATIENTS! He sees a money sign $$$ walk in the door instead of a person. He doesn't know it yet but, he has not only lost me as a patient but, MY ENTIRE FAMILY! Which is not 1 but, 6 patients! I'd recommend to anyone!! I only had two cleanings and one filling replaced before they stopped accepting my insurance. :-( Which is the ONLY reason I stopped going. Unless you've gone to school for dentistry, you really just have to trust that who you're seeing knows what they're doing. You have to ask yourself, "do I really need this procedure to be done, or is the office after some extra income". Not here!! When they said that I needed to have a filling replaced, DeBonis added a level of verification on why it needed to be replaced that I hadn't seen in other dentist offices. I could see why my own eyes the reason why. Sad to leave this practice. If they accept your insurance, you should give them a call!
