Oh! I can't believe I have never reviewed Valerio's Bakeshop. We cannot leave Seafood City without stopping in and getting some stuff to snack on. My mom loves to stock up on the chicken siopao here. It's one of the places she can get a perfectly flavored one that rivals the ones we used to get at Filipino bakeries when I was a child. My mom doesn't eat pork and most of the time siopao is made with BBQ pork, so she really appreciates that they make chicken here. When I first started coming to Valerio's, all the stuff was pretty basic and traditional. I absolutely love coming in now and seeing all the new and fun stuff they come up with. Like, I had never seen malunggay pan de sal. They changed the pan de coco to be more like a filled pan de sal, instead of a filled pan de leche. I might like this preparation a bit better because the pan de sal is more savory than the pan de leche so it makes the coconut pop. Ma.Sa.Rap!!!! This little shop is fairly small so it's a bit hard to maneuver around, especially if you have bags from shopping in the store but they have it fairly organized and it's easy to find what you're looking for. The people who work here are pretty apathetic but not unfriendly. They are helpful and you can ask them a lot of questions if need be. I will say that although everything is super delicious it is a bit pricey for what it is. After walking in the front doors of Seafood City, you gotta pass Red Ribbon, and go towards the checkstands, then hang a left and walk 30 more feet before you see Valerio's. (My marketing brain thinks this location isn't ideal for foot traffic for random walk-in customers, but maybe the rent is cheaper than what they charge for the Red Ribbon location, which could make sense... but WHAT IF they could have 2x-3x the daily sales if they had a location with better visibility? Just a thought.) They have fresh baked soft and buttery bibingka, kuchinta, puto ube flavored baked goods, sapin sapin, turon, and other desserts that diabetic Filipino aunties love. There's a minimum order if you use a credit card, but it's ok because they have deals on stuff. Just today I took advantage of their "Buy 5, get one Free" empanada deal. I think the fresh baked exterior of their chicken empanadas is pretty good. I like how they're warm when you buy them... however the meat inside is honestly pretty bland. I just recently went back to SoCal for a family visit and they had bought Ube pandesal from valerios. And it was divine. Now that I know this location is here, I'm stoked. During my last visit, I stocked up. Of course Ube pandesal was at the top of my list. I also purchased karioka and ensaymada. It was all delicious but the karioka was my favorite!!!!! Fried doughy balls rolled in caramelizer sugar!!! My mouth is watering now. The cashier was nice and suggested some other items, but I declined. Maybe next time. For sure I'll be back!! Valerio's has a variety of Filipino desserts that give me that comfort of being at home with my parents. I've tried a variety of the desserts. Ube Buchi is delicious, especially when it's fresh! It is a deep fried sesame ball filled with an Ube paste. It's chewy and crunchy. I could taste the Ube filling which is always a plus! Karioka is also delicious! It's 3 large mochi balls coated with brown sugar on a stick. It's also crunch and chewy! Ube Pandesal with cheese is yummy! I suggest putting it in the microwave for 10 seconds for the cheese to melt in the Ube bread. You can't really taste the Ube, but the texture of the bread and the cheese is on point. Ube Malasadas is what my fiancé and I recently had. It's a sugar deep fried donut with a an Ube cream filling. The donut itself was very good! It was soft, chewy and moist. As I bit into the Ube malasada, I could not taste the Ube filling. It tasted like a light, oily whipped cream. Overall, this place is is great if you're craving some Filipino desserts! I really love this specific Valerio's location compared to the one on Maryland Pkwy. Although I live much closer to the that one, I prefer this one much more. The items in the glass case are really delish because they are fresh. Whenever I'm in the area I make it a point to buy the ube ensaymada to eat as a snack. For .90 cents you are definitely getting a deal. Recently noticed a new item which was the "malasada" and would describe this as cross between a malasada and beignet. This was also delish and yet another great value. Lastly, the empanadas are great as well, the dough is very crisp and the filling is good. The selections are very limited at this location and a little bit different so I asked the cashier about that.
