I don't get it. How is Valhalla coffee so much better than anything else I've had? We've been buying pounds of the Viking Blend from Metropolitan Market for awhile and finally decided to stop into Valhalla's actual store and get a latte made at the source! And it was ah. may. ZING. I've been spending thousands at Starbucks for years thinking it doesn't get better than that. Well wasn't I terribly, sadly mistaken. On our last trip, we picked up a pound of Ethiopian Harrar and while not as strong as the Viking Blend, the flavor is so interesting. We're actually excited to get up in the morning to drink some more, and never am I excited to get out of bed. While Valhalla doesn't have the convenience factor of a Starbucks drive thru, their beans make such good drip coffee that I'm actually saving money by making coffee at home instead of wasting time every morning waiting in a line of cars for a mediocre Americano. As good as or better than any coffee I've ever had. Some of the best coffee in Tacoma. The baristas know exactly what they're doing. They are skilled coffee roasters, and generally nice people. These guys know what they're doing and have an amazing knack for roasting and preparing. I love buying beans here, and once in a while I'll get a drink too and that's always been great. The service is not friendly. That said, I've never found it unfriendly either. It's a little bit like being served by coffee monks--they've all but taken a vow of silence. They are too busy contemplating the mysteries of the coffee god to converse with the laity. So I dropped the grandsons off at Point Defiance Zoo with all their cousins. This Dad needs a little down time before I confront the CRAZY Memorial Day traffic home on the Tacoma-Portland I-5 run. Valhalla Coffee Co. popped up on my little phone search. The first thing marking it as different is the fact Valhalla is also their own custom roaster. As a roaster myself, I always like to visit my people. The shop is small and quite trendy in a hipster sort of way. Not a lot of space, but enough to get by if you're looking for a place to drop your tablet or notebook for some free Wifi. Immediately you'll notice Valhalla has a large clientele of regulars. Many are known by first name, and as soon as the mini rushes are over, they love to chat with you (if you want). Their coffee is excellent. Today I have a large French Press of Ethiopian Harrar (known for blueberry fruitiness. (It is great though I think the 2013 harvest is less fruity than last years). As mentioned by others, amazing roaster....my husband is a fan of the Ethiopian Harrar ($15 bag). I am your basic wanna be Euro trash of the 80's, so I love my espresso drinks. And I appreciate that Valhalla doesn't do fluffy drinks...this is for the serious coffee drinker, people. They have french press and a synesso thingy. I am not even going to pretend to have the erudition to understand. I love that they show up at the local farmer's markets to promote and share and educate. Why get a scalded latte at a chain when you could come here and get true craftsmanship for the same price, people? First, let me say that I don't like coffee. I drink a lot of it, but I don't like it. I don't like Starbucks, or coffee from any other place, but I order it and drink it. It's warm, it has caffeine, and this is the Northwest. One day a few months ago, my son offered to pick me up a coffee. I had no idea where he was going, but I asked for a plain latte. For me, it's either cappuccino or latte, always unflavored. He got home, gave me the coffee, and I took a sip. "Is THIS from C***?" I asked? He raised his hipster eyebrow at me, as if to say he'd never frequent such an establishment. It was from Valhalla, and it was the best damn latte I'd ever had. Best coffee you can get in Tacoma. Growing up here, I always thought Starbucks was soooo cool, but when I moved up to UW for college, I discovered the many local spots to grab a latte. As always, I gave Valhalla's latte a try. Pricier than some good cafes I've been to in Seattle, but it was a delicious latte. 1. Props for roasting their own beans on location. 2. I do a lot of studying/work at cafes but unfortunately this isn't an ideal spot to get work done. It's a small cafe plus most of the tables are small and have cushioned bar stools. 3. When I first started coming here I wasn't sure about the coffee. It was good mind you. It was just a bit different than other roasters and vastly different than that chain based in Seattle. I find myself craving that difference and missing it when I'm forced elsewhere. I come nearly every day now. I'm hooked, almost addicted actually. They roast their own coffee and when they're roasting stopping by is a must. The smell is incredible. Admittedly I'm a bit of a coffee snob now because I've been spoiled here so. But the smell is pretty cool. The service is done well. The staff is friendly, efficient, and they know their customers. They are half the reason their very loyal customers keep coming. There is no drive through and you can't get breakfast or anything to eat for that matter. At times the line can be a bit long. But they're long for a reason folks. It's very good. I'm reviewing this strictly from a coffee perspective - if you want ambience and friendly chatter, there are lots of places to choose from (although I personally don't mind the atmosphere here at all). This is hands down the best coffee overall in Tacoma - it's reliably good, no matter what your preference (other than if you want crushed oreos mixed with ice and caramel sauce - consider taking thyself to Dairy Queen). It's such a treasure that it's one of my favorite places to take people who are new to the area. It's fair to warn people that the prices are a bit steep (I don't bring my kiddo here for hot cocoa!) but considering that you can pay $4.25 for a mere mediocre cup of joe these days, it's a treat I savor. read more

2nd best independent coffee roaster in Washington. Easily the best coffee south of Seattle. Their Sumatra is slightly richer than Stumptown's Holler Mountain, but just as drinkable either fresh or cold. Equally important, every barista there knows how to pull a good shot. No food, you just have to come for the coffee and that's plenty of reason to stop by. read more

I have heard amazing things about Valhalla, so I really wanted to love it. I ordered a 12 oz hazelnut latte with oat milk and it was $6 + tip. That seemed pretty pricey to me, but whatever. I was excited to try it. It took literally over 20 minutes for me to get my drink with only a few people waiting ahead of me. I watched people come in, order, get their drink and leave before I got mine. I'm still giving Valhalla 3 stars, and will give it a second chance sometime, because my latte was pretty delicious. But overall I'm not at all impressed. read more

This little jem happens to be within walking distance of my big brother's house and one day as I was walking my brother's puggies i stumbled upon it. After the poochies were well walked i brought them back to the house and walked back for coffee. I was looking for a basic cup of drip and not really expecting to find anything awesome. However, what I found was amazing coffee....above par. They are a small roasting company and coffee shop. Limited menu, but coffee was what I was there for anyways. There's coffee in town! All the staff are super friendly and helpful. They're so willing to talk you through coffee types and better inform you about your purchase. I didn't know how fine to grind coffee for French press and they were more than happy to not only tell me but also grind the coffee for me. The coffee's always top notch and there are no bad drinks on the menu. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming. It's great to study there or just hang out. read more

Naturally I order a dbl espresso and buy a bag of whole bean VIKING - 'cuz that's how Ariel and Ookla rolls. If you want something a bit lighter, there's the Valkyrie roast. Be prepared to pay the price - I'm constantly reminded about ppl not willing to pay top dollar for top notch stuff. This is artisanal roasted coffee. Small batch. Roasted right in front of your face. Pay this man his money! If you want something to eat go down the street to MSM - call in your order while they brew up your magnificence. That tip alone is worth hundreds of pesos. I started attending the CrossFit gym next door to this place, I've always heard they have the best coffee in town so I was curious, when I got finished with my morning workout I walked in and asked a few questions and they were all answered in depth, I asked what the employees fav thing was, she made it and noticed I asked for honey so she explained they type of espresso she used and how it's a sweeter blend and it should go well with the honey, and gawt damn that was a good cup of coffee , I work in the service industry and I love when people are kind and do their job well, everyone's in a good mood when you walk in and I don't usually leave yelp reviews but felt I had too for this place, feeling like I'm gonna be a regular there now read more

We came in and ordered two lattes, and we stepped aside to wait. Three other customers came in after we had ordered, and all of them appeared to be familiar with the female barista. We watched her make all of their orders before she made our lattes. The coffee was above average, but waiting while a bunch of other people who ordered after you are served before you is just plain wrong. We won't be going back. read more

Valhalla is one of my two favorite coffee spots in Tacoma, just down the street from my other one. Valhalla gets a special bump from me, though, because it also provides the beans that I use at home. My last visit there I had a pour over of the Ethiopian Harar; it was fantastic. Valhalla uses a medium roast, and doesn't burn the beans. [Insert obligatory, PacNW snide comment about Starbucks here.] The price for a pour over is much less than what is charged elsewhere in town, and with equally high quality beans. The beans that Valhalla makes for purchase (on site and in at least two nearby groceries, Tacoma Boys and Metropolitan Market) are outstanding. I consider them to be on par with Stumptown and Intelligentsia. A pound costs between $12 and $19. read more

I just moved to Tacoma from Las Vegas, where its all about the Starbucks. That being said, I am an avid Starbucks drinker and have not really ventured out any further than that. Since moving to Washington, I've wanted to expand my tastes a little bit, but walking into smaller coffee shops and looking at their menus honestly confused me a little bit. I've tried several in this area (Metronome, Cutter's Point) and the baristas have sort of just left me to fend for myself as far as understanding the menu and ordering. I walked into Valhalla and was immediately greeted by two friendly baristas (they probably knew I was new - they greeted almost every customer by name the entire time I was in). The one barista asked me what I wanted, and when I mentioned it was my first time in and I wasn't sure where to start, she immediately asked me what my usual Starbucks order was. Yes! This is definitely something I can work with. She whipped up a hot, delicious coffee for me that was even better than my usual Starbucks drink. They are certainly "no frills" here, but if that's what you're used to, they won't let you down! read more

I love to Yelp new places to try and this place was at the top of the list. Close to work and easy enough street parking made this an easy pick. The coffee menu is incredibly limited and the customer service was not consistent with the ambiance. I got a mocha which was nothing to write home about. What I'm really writing about is their manager. I noticed that my credit card information was being mis-used and it started after using the reader at Valhalla. I expected nothing in return, but called to let them know that they might have an issue with their reader. The manager was instantly hostile and quick to blame me. I just wanted to give her a heads up on the possibility, but she instead utilized her "jump to conclusions" mat for the wrong purpose. Valhalla is the best, period. I lived in Seattle before Tacoma, and am very picky about my morning beverage. I take ground Valhalla and my Melitta with me when I travel to China, send care packages to our daughter in Connecticut, and hand out gifts to people I visit. The post office people are a kick when you mail a package, since the smell is obvious and intoxicating. They too have discovered Valhalla. After trying several blends, including the Harrar, we stick with the Viking blend. I used to go over to UPS to get my afternoon Valhalla fix, since I live only a few minutes walk from Distractions (that's what we call it). But since UPS went with Caffe Vita, I now ride my bike the one mile over to Valhalla to get the real stuff. read more
