Stopped here yesterday while visiting from California. My daughter ordered a hot chocolate and I asked the barista to recommend something hot and not too sweet (I favor flat whites etc). He suggested a Honey Latte. It was wonderful! I'd never consider putting honey and coffee together - but the drink worked! Meh. Decent coffee. Looooooooong wait for it. There were three staff members working and for some reason, only one was preparing drinks. Customers sitting around waiting for their drinks to be ready. In the meantime, when an order for beans was handed out, the staff member would lean over the open customer cups that were lined up in wait. I was tempted to leave, with or without a refund, thinking about what could fall into my cup. There must be a better system that doesn't risk contamination of beverages. So 5-stars on the coffee. We buy a pound of Espresso roast every other week and make our espresso at home. The employees are always helpful and I'm a fan of supporting this local business because it is the best coffee I've ever tried. I actually miss it when we go on vacation. Now if you are just picking up a drink from the store you might need to pack your patience as it is very high quality, not-drive thru coffee quality, it does take a while to get your drinks made. I've been in the store during busier times to pick up my beans and the wait can be 15+ minutes if there are drinks ahead of your order. So it is very worth it, if you aren't in a hurry to get out the door. read more

Pretty decent coffee - nothing remarkable but decent. Barista was pretty unfriendly. I am not looking for ass kissing but a little banter would be nice when I am paying nearly 5.00 for a cup of joe. Store has a definite "dark hipster" vibe and they appear to be fairly open about their political stance on a few things...not my cup of tea....which is fine...it is their business and they can do that. Staff is knowledgeable and extremely friendly. I'm a coffee snob. I try to patronize small business before chosing a chain. So when I passed by and there was parking in front... I figured it was meant to be. Cute little spot with some seating inside. Cool roaster. Staffs has an answer for all coffee related questions and they offer good suggestions. Like drinking smooth chocolate. at a cafe. in Paris. Went to Valhalla while waiting for a restaurant to open up. Heard good things about this place so it was good timing both places were close to each other. The staff was very friendly and explained the different types of beans and provided solid recommendations. She suggested we try the Mocha so went with it while also getting a pound of their Viking Blend. Once we got the drinks, taking that first sip was like "Damn! Am I drinking coffee or whipped chocolate!?" It was that damned smooth. It reminded me of drinking cappuccino at a cafe when I lived in Germany or while visiting Paris. The coffee wasn't too hot or cold and was just right. My wife loved it so much (she's not a mocha fan) that she was trying to take my cup (I don't think so!). The staff was also kind enough to make my Mocha with Soy after I forgot to ask-and they didn't even charge me, even after offering to pay extra. Wow, their espresso blend roast is phenomenal! Ordered soy latte and pretty much chugged it down--it was that delicious! Their coffee is definitely my new favorite in T-Town and prefer it over Metronome. Their espresso blend is well rounded and has a hint of chocolate with soy milk. The roast is strong and dark yet not acidic and goes down smoothly. We were passing through on our way back to Seattle and decided to give it a try. I'm glad we did because we discovered another gem. I was about to drive away but turned around to buy a bag of the espresso blend roast for pour over coffee at home. Had the pour over yesterday morning and it was delicious as anticipated! The roast has a natural hit of chocolate taste to it and it speaks all sorts of beautiful notes on my palate. This is definitely a new pour over favorite. I like it better than Zoka's espresso blend roast! I wish they open later at night because 7pm is a bit on the early side. Also, it a small space. Hopefully their customer base gets bigger and is able to expand their facility. One thing for sure, you had me at first sip and will continue to support your business and exceptional coffee! I finally got a chance to stop by this coffee shop on 6th ave. I know they serve Valhalla coffee at several restaurants in Tacoma. I could smell the fresh roasted coffee before even entering the little shop and the coffee definitely did not disappoint. I opted for a soy mocha and it was creamy and delicious! We came at 10:20 AM on a Monday and didn't get our drink until 10:50 AM since there was only 2 people working. Wouldn't mind the wait normally but it was raining and we couldn't find any street parking in front of the place so we were pretty wet when we finally got our drinks since we had to wait outside. On the rare occasion when I also need a cuppa (like when I enter the store and smell that delightful aroma), that has never disappointed either. I was excited to find "my coffee place" and frequent 4-5 days a week these past two months. Really great espresso and a loyal following. Customer service starts with often having a long line to order while standing in the doorway. The plastic hanging shield over the register prevents easy communication. The tall guy who occasionally works the front is nice. The cashier/order taker -Audra- is generally very irritable and short tempered. (Is she from Seattle??? She often gave off a Seattle-chill vibe every time I have made the point to drive across town to Valhalla.) However, yesterday she was especially rude. She raised her voice and made sneering remarks to me that embarrassed me in front of the other customers. Then as I stepped away, she became super syrupy sweet to the following customers in a loud exaggerated way knowing I could hear her. I know it is extremely hard to find people to come to work with covid 19. Plus I know keeping any low wage employee happy and willing to come to work is difficult right now. I just long for the days I could have made this place my favorite coffee place not only for their delicious coffee but for their welcoming, warm and friendly service. Haven't been in a long time but my first review was truth some years back. My experience back then was quite different. It's not as good as I made it out to be now that I've had a moment to stay. Downgrade a star Someone said they had a comfy couch to sit on...no..they do not. Very uncomfortable stools you can't move. If you have a bad back, you can't move them closer to the wall to lean so you are using your back to support yourself upright. The wifi was aweful. I had to say something since Verizon service in the area is horrible and the comcastwifi is just as poor. The staff reset the router which helped. So overall with other places to compare, this place is just so so. Its really closer to 3 stars. Coffee is still good though. I'm back on regular blend and not decaf. read more

I'm not gonna make some overdone allusion to the Valhalla of myth. There isn't a need. I'm sure 100 people before me already did that. So instead I will just say that this place has got it going on, with a few things that just don't work for me. I will say I loved walking in and seeing the roaster right there. The service was just awesome and you could tell that this business cared about not only their "craft" but also about the customers that they welcomed by name as they came through the door. This reminded me of my favorite place in Reno. The cappuccino didn't speak to me as much as I would have liked. The milk was a bit too hot for my tastes. I did love that I could actually taste the coffee though it was robust and filled my palate. I was half tempted to order another and request a cooler temp...but I had another coffee place to try out. I can do 4 shots...but I cant do 6! The seating is built into the floor, so you can't easily cram extra people around a table, so if you go, don't go with more than one other friend. You wont be able to all sit together easily. Parking this weekday was easy and close and the line wasn't too bad. Not sure how it will be on the weekends. I read more

This is defo my fave coffee joint in the 253. The staff are always super welcoming and they're coffee is great! Plus they generally have a good soundtrack backdrop that I appreciate. If you're in the mood for some strong coffee this is certainly worth hitting up-- they're 16oz drinks are all quads which will have you buzzing around like a lunatic in 3 mins flat. You can also buy they're bulk beans which are a joy to have at home. That said, you can't pull an espresso at home like they do here. Valhalla is embodiment of Tacoma in a coffee shop. It's everything a Tacoma coffee shop should be. Nice employees, quirky, fun clean interior, and most importantly as perfect an espresso as there is. They even supply their beans to other top-tier coffee shops in the area including Corina. The internet here is fast and efficient--not the typical shit-tier internet speeds of most free wifi places. ***coffee snob review*** This is about as perfect a latte as I have yet to be served. Temperature is spot on perfect--not nuclear hot. The espresso is full bodied and roasty, fruity, round and complex without being bitter nor acrid. The balance of roasty without being bitter is practically perfect. Last but not least, the price of the coffees--completely reasonable. I'm used to paying well over $5 (after my standard $1 tip) in Seattle--and now evidently in downtown Tacoma...--but Valhalla's 12 oz latte was a completely reasonable $3.85. For example, head down 6th avenue to Metronome and you'll be paying Seattle prices. Valhalla gets my vote as best coffee shop in Tacoma. You'll get great espresso at a handful of places but Valhalla is the complete package. read more

This is a great coffee spot. Don't come here for food, they have none, don't come for fast coffee, they take their time, DO come here for awesome, friendly-enough people who make great coffee. I usually get a latte but have tried their pour over and americanos and they are both excellent. Some added bonus awesomeness: 1) they have crayons and coloring pages for kids 2) some outdoor bench seating 3) they have a handsome, old-timey looking coffee roaster which they use, I've only seen it in action on weekdays. It's in the store where you can see it unobstructed. Overall, a great spot for nom coffee and good vibe! 11/20/2018 update. 6 STARS!!!! The kind gentleman roasting beans took the time, at least 15 mins, to show my 11 y/o son the whole process: scooping beans out of the bags, loading them in the roaster, cooling the beans, all the good stuff.
